Not sure if you can read anything into that, but Overlord was, like, a Top 3 most frequent test screening invite over the last couple years. I know it was rumored to be the next Cloverfield-- maybe they were testing a Cloverfield connection to see if it'd play?
Anyhow. Mad I didn't see it now. Shit looks pretty fun.

I think it was just bad timing.
I don't think anyone ever really expected this to be the sleeper hit. A lot of the recent successful horror movies had some special angle to it, something that made folks go "I don't normally go see horror movies but I went to see this cause ___."
I haven't seen it yet but everything I've read/heard about it pretty much has said that Overlord is a fun but relatively basic horror movie. I doubt it was ever going to get the attention of, say, Hereditary, Get Out or Halloween.
That said, I still want to see it, although I probably won't get to catch it in the theater.
