"First Reformed (Paul Schrader, 2018)"

Saw this shit Monday afternoon right after Solo and forgot to post about it.

This shit is excellent. It's deliberately paced so it all builds to a wild conclusion.

I can't recommend this for everyone, but I loved this shit.

Cedric the Entertainer needs to do more serious roles.

Once more people see this I'd like to talk about the subtext about courrption and megachurches.

but with its own message/twist. Winter Light is about a preacher losing faith in god, this is about a preacher losing faith in humanity. The general plot is VERY similar though.

The ending sequence will go down as a classic...high suspense, very disturbing, possibly hopeful?

See this film.

it's arguably a little TOO similar to Diary and Winter Light which might annoy some film historians, but doesn't bother me because it's so well executed, modernized, and I love the topic.

Sadly, I never get to see shit like this in the theaters.

Schrader has been hit or miss for me, but I've heard good things about this one. I'll make a note to catch it when it streams...

Gonna need to ponder this one a bit, it has lots going for it from the stark restrained yet urgent imagery to Ethan Hawke giving easily one of his best performances. Not quite sure I dug the finale, and clearly the audience I was with was a bit perplexed too.
