According to Sasha Baron Cohen, the surviving members of Queen originally wanted have Mercury die at the film's halfway point, and the rest of the film be about how the rest of the band "bravely" continued on without him.
Damn shame, since apparently Mercury's only request if they did indeed make a feel about his life was "just don't make me boring."
