"The Expanse (Season 3, SyFy, 4/11)"

love this show.

i'm so far ahead in the books i honestly don't even remember where the tv show left off, but this is a great series and the adaptation to the screen has been fantastic.

way higher than the bar typically is for televised sf, but there's a lot of ish going on from a character and plot perspectives that make it enjoyable even if science fiction isn't your thing.

production values are also very high. i'm hyped for S3.

peace & blessings,

I didn't read the source material, but I thoroughly enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2. I agree, the production values are very, very high. It doesn't look cheap and I think that's one of the most important things in a sci fi show set in space.

was intense. I like how they incorporated the effects of HIgh-G in the chase. I was unsure if Aversala was going to survive to be honest. But finally, she and Bobbie meet up with the crew so they can compare notes and start to put things together.

julie mao's racing spaceship was so dope. so much better than i envisioned it in my head.

>was intense. I like how they incorporated the effects of
>HIgh-G in the chase.

love that about the books and they do a super job translating the sciencey part of the sci fi to the screen.

when you see characters in the space ships under acceleration they get injected with 'juice' which is a cocktail of chemicals that help (but don't eliminate) the effects of high g on the human body.

but even then, that shit wears on you, and the effects are cumulative. so they were running at 5g (i think) with juice, to escape the UNN ship.

avasarala is old(er) and not military or space trained, so that shit was fucking with her. bobbie saw that she was close to stroking out so she had to kill the acceleration. once they slowed down, the UNN ship licked off with the torpedoes.

I was unsure if Aversala was going to

i just love her character. love bobbie, also. and naomi and amos and fred johnson. just some really perfect casting.

really great show. i hope more people watch it. there's a helluva lot of world building and intrigue still to go.

Right! I didn't read the books, but I like how the show attempts to incorporate "real" science into the narrative. It makes the show feel more grounded in reality. Like the communications for example. There is real time, sub-space video chat like on Star Trek. They record messages that are sent across the system and take a while to reach their destination. It's a little thing, but it adds to my enjoyment.

I must say, Avasarala looks good in a body suit.

I can't believe how stupid the UN Secretary General is. Dude let's Errinwright play him like a puppet.

Those soldiers were good Bobby pick the right time to learn to talk to people, cause she would have done a number on them.

And how disappointed was Amos that he missed all the action? LOL!

But Katoa though. Yo....dude put that body on display like an episode of "Hannibal".

Noooo! Netflix BETTA get up on this.

http://deadline.com/2018/05/the-expanse-canceled-syfy-after-three-seasons-to-be-shopped-1202388026/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

‘The Expanse’ To End On Syfy With Season 3, Will Be Shopped Elsewhere By Alcon
By Nellie Andreeve

The current third season of The Expanse will be the space drama’s last one on Syfy. The cable network has decided not to pursue a fourth season of the show, with the last episode slated to air in early July. Alcon Television Group, which fully finances and produces the critically praised series, plans to shop it to other buyers.

“The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television,” President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

The Expanse was one of the first series greenlighted after the change in programming direction at Syfy when the network signaled a return to its roots of sweeping space opera series in the vein of Battlestar Galactica. The Expanse, from Alcon and the Sean Daniel Co, which was tipped as a potential successor to Battlestar Galactica, was part of a crop of Syfy series that launched in 2015, along with The Magicians, which was recently renewed for a fourth season, and 12 Monkeys, which was renewed for an upcoming fourth and final season.

The Expanse is one of the most well reviewed sci-fi series on TV, with the current third season scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (vs. 95$ for Season 2 and 76% for Season 1.)

The cancellation decision by Syfy is said to be linked to the nature of its agreement for the series, which only gives the cable network first-run linear rights in the US. That puts an extraordinary amount of emphasis on live, linear viewing which is inherently challenging for sci-fi/genre series which tend to draw the lion share of their audiences from digital/streaming.

The Expanse‘s Live+3 linear ratings started with 581K in adults 18-49 and 1.378M total viewers in Season 1. The Season 2 average was 457K in 18-49 & 1.05M total; Season 3 to date is at 400K and 1 million. That is below the performance of Syfy’s top dramas, The Magicians and Krypton, as well as comedy Happy! but in line with a number of co-productions.

“We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy,” said Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. “We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

Co-created and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men), the series is based on the bestselling book series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). The cast includes Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams and Thomas Jane.

his changes this season were pretty compelling. i've never read the books but the first couple seasons painted him as an unpredictable, loose hothead with a thirst for killing. not to mention the dead-eyed portrayal of him by Wes Chatham. but since Prax entered the mix, dude has stepped up with the empathy and genuine care for another human being. when Prax called him "his best friend in the world", the look on Amos' face was priceless. dude found a bff.

he's that mystery dude who will fuck u up through several years, who will zap out if anybody threatens kids. don't bat an eyelash about killing somebody, puppy dog loyal to naomi...

there was a novella about his upbringing on earth, in baltimore that connects all the dots. its a quick read and i recommend it. it doesn't spoil the show, just fleshes out his personality quirks, etc.

he is REALLY not here for anybody messing with kids. goes back to him having a really effed up childhood. he also doesn't like ppl getting taken advantage of in general, so back in S2 when they were on ganymede (i think) trying to hunt down clues to find Mei and the dude was charging $$ for help and he beat the shit out of him w/ the soup can -- that's how he gets down.

the show plays up even more than the book (although it was there) the attachment between amos and Prax. i think it's because amos wishes there would have been someone who loved him like Prax loves Mei when he was growing up, and he's pained by seeing a father powerlessly trying to save his baby girl. tv show really brings that dynamic home, to its credit.

in a couple of distinct (and surprising) directions, already.

the story universe is so vast that they are leaving lots of space (no pun) to fill in gaps with novellas to elaborate on shit that is only referenced in the books or on the show.

i mentioned in a reply above about Amos' backstory showing his particular character's origins, while also showing details of the people living on an earth with billions and billions of people with nothing to do but try to survive. there's another one, Butcher of Anderson Station, that i haven't read yet (but will) that gives the backstory on OG Fred Johnson, and how he went from a key and controversial role in earth's military to becoming one of the principal faction leaders in the belter resistance's Outer Planet Alliance.

as far as the continuing arcs of the novels go, some of the major plot points were pretty shocking and surprising to me, on some, y'all did THAT?

peace & blessings,

The Expanse officially saved by Amazon for season 4

Rafy/Syfy
NICK ROMANO May 26, 2018 at 10:47 AM EDT

Cancellations are no longer death sentences. Brooklyn Nine-Nine moved over to NBC after getting dumped by Fox, fan petitions helped continue Timeless and Sense8, and now The Expanse secured a Hail Mary of its own.

After Syfy dropped the sci-fi space drama, Amazon picked it back up for a fourth season amid online calls to #SaveTheExpanse. Media outlets had reported rumblings of this deal in the past few days, but Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-founders and co-CEOs of Alcon Entertainment, made the news official.

“We couldn’t be more excited that The Expanse is going to continue on Amazon Prime,” they said in a joint statement. “We are deeply grateful that Jeff Bezos, Jen Salke, and their team at Amazon have shown such faith in our show. We also want to thank Laura Lancaster, head of Alcon Television for her tireless efforts. We are fully aware that this wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the staggering outpouring of support from the most creative, hardest working sci-fi fans around the world. From reddit campaigns to airplanes, we say thank you. It worked!”

The Expanse actor Cas Anvar shared footage of the moment the cast found out from Amazon head Jeff Bezos. They had been present at the International Space Development Conference when Bezos took the stage.

“I was talking to the cast half an hour ago, right before dinner started, and I was telling them we were working hard at Amazon to save The Expanse, but it wasn’t a done deal yet,” he said. “And during dinner, 10 minutes ago, I just got word that The Expanse is saved.”

As expected, Anvar and stars like Steven Strait and Wes Chatham were over the moon.

“You guys did this. You guys made this happen,” writer Naren Shankar addressed the fans in a separate video.

“Our minds are blown,” Anvar added. “I had my suspicious that this was something spontaneous that happpened because the energy and the synergy of the universe came together. But you are getting season 4, people!”

To all #TheExpanse fans, thank you! #YouDidIt,” Chatham wrote on Twitter.

“It has been one surreal day to say the least,” the show’s writers tweeted. “Thank you so much to all the amazing fans who worked so hard & put in so much time & passion to fight for this family. Our family. The Expanse family. Thank you! Here we go! Together!”

Season 3 premiered on Syfy this past April with a story that saw “Earth, Mars and The Belt at war, with each competing entity vying for control.” Now, as a beaming Anvar said in his videos, Shankar has to “get to work” writing season 4.

That was a darned good episode. I wonder who is trying to frame Holden. Is my man who's second in command to the Behemoth part of it? He was pushing hard to destroy the Rocinate.

The first few minutes of this episode I started thinking this one might be a take your breath, slow down, build up for the final two season ender. NOPE, action picked up in second half.

If I had to find a minor complaint it is the whole Mao loser older daughter plotline. The actress isn't doing it for me and the story seems like a distraction from the main plot points

Great show, best Scifi TV since BSG. Really looking forward to, and hoping Amazon can take it up another level. And without too much delay for the next season.
That said, I will start reading books.

SPOILER ALERT: Read on only if you have already watched the season 3 finale of The Expanse.

The Ring gates have been opened. And while James Holden may have just saved civilization — again — he also has a protomolecule Miller running around in his head and just had a burst of energy shoot out at him as he traveled through the Ring. So stuff is still pretty… weird.

It was a tense and turbulent season 3 finale of The Expanse. Ashford tried to destroy the Ring to save humanity, not realizing the act would actually doom it. Holden knew the solution, but had to engineer a mutiny and storm the Behemoth to see his plan through. And when all seemed lost, Clarissa Mao of all people — the same Clarissa Mao whose mission was to destroy Holden at all costs — saved the day in the hopes that one true good act could make up for the terrible things she had done.

But so many questions about what we just saw remain, and we have even more questions for what will be coming up next when season 4 moves over to Amazon. We spoke to showrunner Naren Shankar to get all the inside scoop about making some major changes from the book series on which the TV show is based, as well as big plans for the future.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s start right at the very end: What is the meaning of that last shot where the Roci goes through the Ring, and as Holden passes through it, there is a burst of energy. What’s going on there, and what are you setting up for season 4?

NAREN SHANKAR: When Holden was in that vision with Miller, he learns the beings that built the Rings, they’re gone. So what killed them? Because he had a vision of these things, he had a vision of something destroying the Rings and shutting them down. And Miller says, “I kinda wanna know too.” And so when the Roci goes to the Ring at the end, it comes to kind of an ominous little harbinger of things to come. That there is something inside that Ring space, in places between the Ring gates, that’s gonna come into play at some point as the series goes on.

EW: We’ll talk more about what you have in store for season 4 in a bit, but let’s get into what happened this season. First off, you really sped through book 3, Abaddon’s Gate, doing the whole thing in seven episodes — much faster than the first two books. Why the accelerated pace for what is, in my opinion, one of the best books in the series?

NS: Book 3 was a challenging thing to adapt. What was tricky about Abaddon’s Gate was that it starts with an entirely new cast of characters. It kind of builds up to getting them through the Ring. It’s more philosophical than intellectual. The space where they go into, it’s sort of the most… I don’t want to use this term disparagingly at all, but sort of science-fiction-y thing we have done in the run of the show. Which tends to be sort of more like science-realistic, or at least tries to achieve that. So for a lot of reasons, we felt like we had 13 episode seasons, we were gonna finish off Caliban’s War mid-season. We took the approach that we compressed it and we launched Anna, who was the character, really kind of the focus character in Abaddon’s Gate, early in the season, which we did because she is not actually in the second book at all.

EW: Yeah, you gave her a prequel, basically.

NS: That’s right, we gave her a history, we gave her a connection to Earth and the government, and we changed her backstory, but that would enable us to get through the end of that because it was such a great season-ender. It was such a momentous thing and such a huge game-changer for the world of The Expanse. We always felt like that would be a great place to end the season. So I think it was all those factors together that led to the decision to compress that narrative into seven episodes.

EW: So in the interest of not introducing too may new characters, is that why Drummer — who has a huge role in book 7 but not in book 3 at all — took on the characteristics of Bull and Michio Pa?

NS: Yeah, we combined that into her narrative, and I think that people who know the book sort of see where we’re going with Drummer a little bit. That’s definitely her trajectory, and I think it’s just something that naturally happens. You have to make these choices as you go along, because otherwise you’re just changing the cast wholesale season to season.

EW: Cara Gee is so good in that role of Drummer, and I really thought you were going to kill her off because I know what happens with Bull in the book in that elevator shaft, and when she’s got those grenades I thought you were about to take her out!

NS: That’s exactly what we were hoping people would think. We wanted to keep Cara in the show because we just think she’s a great character. She’s really made Drummer her own, and we couldn’t be happier with how that’s playing out for us.

EW: One of the most interesting things you did on the show was your treatment of Ashford. He’s a pretty detestable character in the book, but you made him much more layered here and turned him into a guy who, while on the wrong side of things, does think what he’s doing is right and is admirable in the way he is willing to sacrifice himself for that. How did that character evolve for you?

NS: Part of it was when we got this point in the narrative, it was about Fred and Dawes and their dueling agendas. But when we got to the Behemoth, it would be kind of weird to have Fred and Dawes on this ship. And so, it led us to this idea of their lieutenants. So Drummer was a logical one to take it for Fred Johnson, and then we were like, “Who’s the guy who worked for Dawes?” Then that was the starting point for Ashford, because he doesn’t have really that backstory in the book. And we asked ourselves, what would a guy who worked for Dawes have done before?

And so we crafted that character and built a backstory around him. And then, as we understood what he was going to do, we had the opportunity to reach out to David Strathairn. He was older than we thought initially the character was going to be, but that actually allowed us to give more layers and more depth to it. And so what you saw in the final product was kind of the aggregation of all of those different things. I think that it’s one of my favorite things in season 3, honestly. He just gives a terrific performance, all over.

EW: Let’s talk about season 4. What can you say about where the story goes next?

EW: One of the things that seems pretty clear, and we set it up at the end of the episode 13 with Holden’s thing, it’s going to be another blood-soaked gold rush. That’s about to happen, because you’ve got an entire species and several societies that have defined themselves on the fact that the solar system is all they’ve got, that those resources are what they have. But suddenly that all changes. It’s like the discovery of the New World — suddenly there’s land, there’s resources, there’s the potential of making incredible fortunes right there. What’s going to happen? Well, readers of the book know that these are things that that destabilize societies, and that’s what you are going to see the beginnings of in season 4.

EW: The fourth book, Cibola Burn, takes place pretty much all on the planet Ilus, or in orbit of that planet. Will that be the same deal here? Is that going to be the battleground and the space version of expanding west?

NS: Ty and Daniel often refer to the story of Ilus and Cibola Burn as kind of a classic Western in many ways. The book Cibola takes place entirely on Ilus. We are there for one complete novel. We are going to tell that story in season 4, sure, but we’re not leaving Earth and Mars and the Belt behind. They’re part of the story, and both of fans of the books and fans of the show are going to see something really interesting and new in season 4.

And obviously the mystery of what threatened and killed this alien civilization that built the protomolecule is still going to be front and center.
Absolutely.

EW: What about some characters that don’t play a big role in the next book and what your plans may or may not be for them? Let’s start with Bobbie: Are you going to accelerate her becoming a crew-member on the Roci?

NS: Well, Bobbie is most definitely in season 4. I don’t want to give too many spoilers about what happens with her, but there are novellas that Ty and Daniel have written as well that we’ve built to the narrative. There are things that we can explore because, again, the idea that these new habitable worlds that have opened up through the Ring gate, that destabilizes Earth and the Belt as well as Mars. We’ve never been to Mars, really. We’ve never been to the planet Mars in the course of the series. I’ll leave it at that.

EW: What about Avasarala, because you know how much we all love her? Obviously she was not a big presence in the second half of season 3, and the fourth book, as you mentioned, all takes place far away from her. So can we expect to see Shohreh Aghdashloo in season 4?

NS: You are absolutely going to see Shohreh in season 4. She’s a big part of what goes on, and we’ve got a great story line for her on Earth and other places as well.

EW: What are you generally thinking for book 4 in terms of how long it will take you to get through it? Is season 4 going to be all book 4? Or is book 4 going to go into season 5? Do you have a sense of that yet?

NS: We do have a sense of it. I don’t want to tell people too much because I think it surprised people that we were able to get all the way through Abaddon at the end of the season because it didn’t fit our pattern so far. The way we approach it in the room is we try to tell the story that we want to tell over the course of the season, irrespective of where it lands at the end of the book, the middle of the book, two-thirds of the way through the book, or a whole book. We’ve often pulled materials forward from later novels and to earlier novels, building novellas into it. It changes kind of season to season. We certainly have a long-term plan of what the show is over the next several seasons, but I don’t want to give too much away to people.

EW: Finally, how does the show change now being on Amazon as opposed to Syfy?

NS: There are some things that are amazing that we don’t have to worry about: restrictions on nudity, restrictions on language, and restrictions on length to some extent. It’s like we don’t have to jam the episodes into 43-minute boxes if they’re going to spill over into a 50-minute box. There were times in season 3 where I wished that I had been able to put another four or five minutes into certain shows, it would have been great. And we certainly would have done it, and that’s the beauty of being on another platform like this, is that if the material demands it, you can make the story a little bit longer to accommodate it.

We never wrote it going, “Oh, God, it’s going to be on basic cable so we’ve got to tone this down.” I think we did some pretty drastic things when we needed to. None of that’s going to change, and I hope that as we get into it more, we’re going to find more and more opportunities to really make the platform work for us, because it’s a great way to watch the show. When you can stream this thing in 4K and it’s seamless and there are no commercial breaks — we don’t even go to blacks — it’s a different experience when you watch. It’s incredibly engaging, and every time I show it to people that way, they go, “That’s a completely different experience than watching it on basic cable.” So we’re really excited to be on Amazon.

or at least the set budget is gonna need expansion for the next story arc.

i really dug how they portrayed the ring space this season. that was not how i'd envisioned it (but pure black would have been visually boring).

it really gave you an otherworldly sense, reinforcing that they were trapped in a place where the rules of physics seemingly did not apply or at least were subjugated by some technology that was completely incomprehensible

screenwriters and screen adaptations... they made a lot of choices in this that were different from the books but which kept to the overall spirit of the books and punched up the drama.

i think they ran through 2 books this season. the pacing threw me off but it was good.

spoilers...

- it's about to get real now that the rings are open.

- that was new, having clarissa mao kinda save the day (her character is important a few books later)

- one part they deviated from the book was that holden was only able to talk to miller, who is a projection of the protomolecule, when he was on the rocsi, or on the station / hub. in the books it was explained that this was because there was some contamination on the ship, which served as a conduit. they didn't explain it on the show but if the protomolecule can communicate with itself over intrastellar distances, no reason to believe it shouldn't be able to talk to holden without having a smidgen of it on whatever ship he's on. still, they took time to show us a little piece of the protomolecule still on the rocsci a couple eps back.

Read book 8 in a week, and it’s still fire. Not great literature or even in the pantheon of great space sci-fi, but so damn solid, especially considering the amount of books and scope. There were a couple of not so great books in middle, not sure which ones but 8 is one of the better ones.

Can’t wait for the finale next year. Also excited to see season 4 of the show. Any word when that is?

not having much to show for it. (c) mad
