whoever's in charge of the music, get him/her a raise

Hearthrob Henry out here living his best life, what's up with the center? what's the plan for him?

I fully expect Paige to be murking people by ep 4, meanwhile Henry got his fan club on deck

Liz is going so hard she's bound to burn out and make the one stupid mistake that's gonna get the Jennigs jammed up

That was one of the only times I ain't believe a kill on the show. General had the drop on her. No way she escapes that and also gets the upper hand.

She also doing too much: training Paige, dealing Philip, pretending to be a care taker, working on the summit, and Death Hand. How She ain't cracked

i guess part of it is Liz's maternal protective instinct and part of it is that she knows Paige was raised as a soft American, while Liz was raised hard as fuck.

She's still appealing to Paige's passion for social justice but scared to throw her in the deep end and hit her with the real about how how mom has to fuck and kill people on a regular basis.

I bought that she handled the general since I just took it as he has no idea she has skills like that. He probably hasn't seen action since Korea which would have been 35 years ago.

That 3 years has really separated Phil and Liz. I remember when the show started thinking that Phil being open to American values was a misdirect, and it would ultimately be her that caves while he remained down for the cause. But the same pattern has remained throughout the series. Liz is becoming less and less likable. Mainly because she's ramped up the using and killing people thing. Keri Russell is absolutely killing it though

Lol Stan trying to be gentle with his girl's aspirations

I'd hate to have Phil as a boss. That pop quiz shit is so annoying lol

it just seems weird that she'd wait three years to drop "I think i want to become an FBI agent". If she was some kind of plant, at this point she's gotta be aware she's too old. Maybe it's her way of looking obviously oblivious, and he'll start sharing info with her out of pity? I'm just spitballing lol.

Dude's drowning in debt but...kenwood pullout, son!

You can tell the whole office cant stand him

I mean they were both right in their arguments in that neither one of them know what people back home are thinking. they're both just projecting what they want to believe.

I was crying at how she said "the washington post??" (#faknews)

i can't speak on informant girl and her husband. i don't remember alot from last season, but it seems like it's not gonna go well.

I didn't love the last season finale, but one of the things it did well was establish (without words) that Elizabeth was starting to get attached to the U.S. and all of its trappings, and that maybe leaving it all wouldn't be as easy as she's been acting like it would since the beginning of the season.

And now... they've tossed it all out. I guess they can write it off as a function that three years have passed, and she just doesn't feel that way anymore. But it just ads to the wheel-spinning that was so much of the last season.

Which is kind of why I don't love the three-year jump in general, other than it gets them to the point where the end of the cold war seems like a possibility.

Liz got 6 bodies in four epsidoes, it's a lil OD

they didn't earn that "heartfelt moment" with Phil and Henry either... i'm getting worried about this really ending weakly.

And I wished I had guessed incorrectly that this would end with Phil v Liz, but it def feels that's where it's headed. I hope I'm wrong

I also think every one dies: Paige, Oleg, Liz, Phil, old annoying center women, er'body, 'cept heartthrob Henry

..that Phil vs Liz will really be full blown thing. His situation might be the push that's needed to bring him back around. And I don't know if it will be in the show but there was a huge stock market crash in 87. Given vacations is the first thing ppl will cut back, and given that he's already struggling, it could easily sink his biz.

Also I've always been under the assumption that there would eventually have to be a hank/Heisenberg moment with Phil and Stan but I'm no longer convinced it will happen, or needs to.

I know he's out of the game (officially, unofficially, whatever)
but they can't leave an illegal who knows where the bodies are buried (literally) out there like that
they're just gonna let him go broke and lose his (and his wife's) cover business?

"We want to keep your kid in his private school! Just come back to work!"

They also might just not micromanage their personal finances like this, so maybe they just don't know the extent that the business is struggling. But either way, they'll know soon enough, and Phil is definitely gonna be left with shit on his shoe.

They keep talking about Gorbachev and the opening of Russia to remind us that Liz's game is a losing one. We know she won't win-- at least not in the way she wants. And she's pretty clearly looking to get killed, whether she realizes it or not-- the martyr complex is real.

I wouldn't be surprised if Liz's "victory" would be to get killed, motivating Paige to play the dirty long game as a sleeper in the government.

I think back to as early as season 3 of "if thats what it takes"

The biggest piece for me is that this is a losing game, its like watching someone give everything they have for a seat on the Titanic knowing its going to sink.

How did you read that?

He seemed to be sick of Paige assuming he's a pussy, but it also tied in with him sleeping with Jailbait who is the same age as Paige, and knowing Paige is now sleeping with people for the cause. Along with Liz finally giving him some, and immediately after asking for something

This seems to be the breaking point episode for Phil. he's done and now complete against Liz

40 min in i was thinking 'hey she hasn't killed anyone ye.. oh damn'. I was legit wondering if she'd snuff out the kid

she's gonna make a tiny little mistake and the whole thing will unravel behind it once Stan starts putting 2 and 2 together on some Hank vs Walt shit

The bar fight might get the ball rolling
It's not every day a 100 lb girl takes out 2 dudes. People will talk
Not "college gossip reaches the FBI" talk but just setting the wheels in motion for her to start getting a rep

Liz would have murked the kid if he turned around and saw her
She's been gone, could break at any moment (likely over Paige)

So now that Phil fucked up the Jailbait op in Greece, what will Liz do?

I didn't think about at the time, but definitely.

Also a couple weeks ago I thought Stan's girl could be clean, but now I'm leaning the other way. Still, assuming background checks and everything that goes into working there it seems like such a long way in, so maybe she's just a red herring

I have no idea how Liz is gonna handle this clear betrayal by Phil. It's also brutally obvious that Liz fucked Phil *just* to get him to do her dirty work. He may have figured that out by episode's end.

A whole episode about how sex applies to this line of work-- brutal to watch, but goddamn it sets up some clear horror in the immediate future.

Phil was also elbows deep in this. Dude has bodies, dude has skill, dude has years in this. Don't condescend to him like he couldn't turn it back on.

He gave you a LITTLE taste of what he really is, he's worked his entire life in this country to shield you from his reality while Liz has worked to bring you in. He felt betrayed, hurt, and on face he was straight disrespected. He almost broke his daughter down. Here's the weird thing, she would've deserved it.

That was hard to watch. He thinking he did everything so this kid could live the American dream and he shitting on me in my own ride!

- Stan looks so disenchanted with the whole thing, but realizing he doesn't have a ton of rope left.

- The end arounds with Liz excusing herself from dinner prep and being legit worried was pretty good.

- Watching Phil flounder on having to fire his folks was hard. Seeing him realize that the american dream isn't always success, but sometimes failure is a part of that equation.

- Liz is good at trapping dudes, she's a damn pro

Its crazy that the reality of what they created is staring at them with disgust as if they'd failed. I mean homie came out and said it "I'm not a failure, I haven't failed" Henry was like yea whatever, talk to this REAL businessman about getting your life right. I'm not coming home this summer.

Phil is against what Liz is doing, but recognizing that this american life is dangerous, detrimental and on some level not what he believes. Like someone else said up there he's caught in the middle of all this.

I legit couldn't read his reaction to Stan's 'Murica Thanksgiving speech. Paige is notably disturbed. Phil is kind of nodding along, but also looking slightly uncomfortable.

He's spying on the wife and passing info to Oleg, and now after Liz called Henry wants to go help her out, because she may not make it thorugh this op.

Where's he at?

This is the first week Liz didn't drop a body. I was certain film geek intern wouldn't make it to the credits.

No one in his house respects him
his business is crumbling
Henry, blissfully ignorant, points and laughs at him

Stan and the FBI will do their job and get close (but no outright smoking gun)
til Phil says fuck it and nudges him in the right direction
he may even turn himself in, get debriefed, and go into witness protection if something traumatic happens (liz and/or paige get murked)

edit: since the show is based on the real-life russian illegals that got caught due to their careless mistakes
that's what I think will happen here
(Paige makes a small fuck up and the whole thing collapses behind it)

..that he's a loser. I don't really think Henry is down on him like that, but it's definitely how Phil took it. While he was able to correct Paige somewhat, Henry might cut deeper since Henry is his department

Maybe a subconscious part of why he's running off to Chicago is so he can do something he doesn't suck at.

This is the side of Americans that folks hate, but don't realize how american children get there. Phil is seeing ALL of that in Henry.

Fucking helll @ the whole Chicago sequence. I knew it was all going to go to shit, but I actually thought it was at least going to set up their downfall. I mean, it still might, but I thought Phil might end up getting killed or something.

I'm assuming Phillip hearing the guy's last words is going to mean he tells it to Oleg. That won't work out well.

One key thing is that the FBI are still looking into the Russian Orthodox Priests. Exactly like the one that married the two of them a few seasons back and that they showed Phillip talking to earlier this season.

Of course Stan is going to figure it out. I suspect he did find something over there, they just didn't show it.

And SMH at Elizabeth's convo with Paige. This shit is going to end so badly for Paige, and despite what Elizabeth did, she never had a choice.

In response to Reply # 0

Oleg's on the top of the list. He ends up either in a U.S. prison and a Russian gulag. I'm guessing it's the former. He spies again for the "right" reasons, but with no diplomatic shield, neither the Americans nor the Russian Embassy nor the KGB trusts him. I'm guessing Oleg gets caught, then after years of hearing about how his father is a hotshot in the government, it's going to be a situation his father can't get him out of.

Phillip is fucked. He's the one I expect is going to end up dead.

I think Paige is fucked too. Manipulated by her mother and Character Actress Margo Martindale to get into this game, but still so unready for its realities. Probably arrested to.

Henry is the one person who gets out unscathed, I'm guessing. Ends up as Stan's "new" son.

I actually think Elizabeth is the one who makes it back to Russia alive. Gives up her family for the cause, only to realize that family was the only thing that really mattered anyway.

What's ill is that what Elizabeth is fighting against is only really temporary. The Russians only have to endure 25 years or so of Glasnost before Putin takes over and puts all the former KGB spooks like her in charge.

I guess it depends how it goes down, but it's a pretty bad look just how under his nose this is. I suppose as long as Renee isn't dirty he'll be ok. If she is, Stan is toast

I was wondering lest episode if Stan was gonna start smelling a rat when Liz took off. It's a bit ridiculous, that travel agents have more out of nowhere emergencies than HE does. I'm sure he can check flight records if he needs to. He wont be able figure out what flights they were on, but he'll see there are no flight records for either one of them.

I figured Oleg was boned when he said goodbye to his wife

I agree on Paige. I think she's absolutely fucked. This moment with Liz was probably her last chance out.

I could see Henry winding up with Stan, if Stan gets out of this unscathed.

The Martha fiasco ended Agent Gad's career. So even if the FBI realizes that he's been next neighbors and best friends with murderous Russian spies, I can see it not ending well either. And yeah, Renee being dirty would certainly fuck him.

But if that's not the case, true believers like Stan (which he's certainly become) usually lend on their feet in the FBi, because they certainly do have their fair share of like-minded Cold Warriors in places of power.

>I figured Oleg was boned when he said goodbye to his wife

0.00000% chance he gets out of this.

>I agree on Paige. I think she's absolutely fucked. This moment
>with Liz was probably her last chance out.

Man, that scene pissed me off so much. Because Liz didn't actually frame it like Paige actually had a choice. She knows as well as Phillip that Paige isn't built for this, but she's so obsessed that she's willing to sacrifice her own daughter.

>I could see Henry winding up with Stan, if Stan gets out of
>this unscathed.

Yep. And I guess Henry is almost old enough that he doesn't really need a legal guardian. But Stan will stand in for the time being.

In response to Reply # 57

Paige fucks up on the next op and gets herself killed
Liz sees the FBI closing in (she gets made as she lingers around the summit) plots her escape but gets caught
Phil becomes David Smith, anonymous nobody in Des Moines or whatever in witness protection after giving up the entire illegal network
Tatiana kills Oleg to get back in the center's good graces (obviously they quickly dispose of her as the network starts getting rolled up)
Stan retires from the FBI and adopts Henry, who finishes prep school

And Phillip would be okay with this. He'd probably want his kids with him, but I doubt that's happening.

I've still got my money on her getting away, but I guess this could happen. I do think Phillip throwing away the poison pill pays off at some point. Like she gets caught, wants to die a martyr, but can't because the necklace is gone.

-Phil's confession to set it off, wrapped up with "they tell us what to do. We're on the hook for ALL of it"
-Stan and dude at the diner: "she smokes like a chimney" weebay.gif
-Cougar Liz and the intern: extremely uncomfortable scene. Dude even resembles Henry.
Her doing that = Phil and Kimmy.
-Said cougar not snapping him like a pretzel when he bucked.
How Sway? (c) She's got more bodies than a Chinese cemetery, what's one more?
Dude looked her dead in the eye and said "I don't understand" and she lets him walk away? Not buying it.
What makes her think he's not running straight to the FBI?
He may be scared of getting in trouble himself, but if he interns for Sam Nunn then he knows how the game works (give up info in exchange for a pass)
-Speaking of FBI, Stan looking out the window catching Liz coming home...did he catch her leaving 5 min later?
-The way what's her face told him "come to bed honey" screams dead man walking. What if next ep he blows the case wide open and she murks him?
-Liz suddenly getting a conscience...I don't know. I figured she didn't wanna murk dude right outside the State Dept. in front of multiple witnesses
I'm saying, she's been ride or die for the motherland throughout the whole series and now for the last two eps she's got humanity?

It's a damm shame The Americans isn't sweeping the awards shows, getting stupid high ratings, and the talk of the town
This series finale should be Breaking Bad ratings level
The way the writers portray tension is serious as a heart attack. Nobody's smiling (c)

In response to Reply # 65

This might have gotten rebuked by the previews but....

What if Stan's girl IS a russian agent? She's trying to get in a government agency just like they are trying to get Paige in. It fits their M.O.

Stan figures out the Phillip Elizabeth thing and kind of hints to his girl what he thinks or she picks up on it.

Right before Stan can go to work with everything his girl murks him.

We get the staisfaction of him finding it out, but they get off free. I don't see them both making it out no matter what goes down but this finale could be on some Breaking Bad levels.

This episode was SOOO good.

It was very unlike her, but it seemed that was the point. We saw somewhat of a preview of it when she almost didn't burn the painting. She knew she HAD to kill the kid, especially after he didn't take the initial out she tried to offer him, and still couldn't do it.

I think it's a combo of her going non stop all season (and i guess the past 3 years) on her own. Phil telling her she lacks humanity, and questioning what she's fighting for. Even if she disagrees with Phil, she respects the shit out of his opinion, plus he just proved how down he was for her in Chicago

Erica was a fellow strong woman staring down death, and forcing liz to be in a room with her and reflect through art. Liz didn't get why the art got to her so much. she just knows it did. Erica fighting like mad while she was mercifully killing her. Everything with Paige... Chicago... the sheer amount of killing she's been doing.. I think it all finally got to her.

The Gorbachev stuff just sealed it

He looks over the books, realizes their no escaping the debt, and calls Henry to talk to him for one last time.

Goes to visit his ex-employee to at least try to get closure with him (though I imagine he was shocked when the guy said "I never told the cops about what was going on in the back room.")

Rents a Russian film so he could get one last taste of home.

I thought they were setting it up so that Phillip would kill himself (he's enough of a pro at this so he could make it look like an accident) and then they could pay for the rest of Henry's high school/education with the insurance money.

Regardless, dude is done.

And him meeting with the Orthodox Priest next week has set-up written all over it. It's going to fuck him in the short and long run.

I took the suit as him trying to make himself feel better by buying shit like a good american

but reading all those things together.. I don't think necessarily it means he'd kill himself, but more that he's either ready to die, or turn himself in.

def pros & cons to marathoning a show like this.

Pro: easier to pick up on/remember big picture storylines
Con: shifts in characters from beginning to end feel less important since to me, they only happened a month ago vs. over years if you watched live.

-the conferences goes off without a problem, which leads to the Gorbachev coup
-Somehow Stan ends up at Glenn Haskard's & sees a painting from his wife of Elizabeth in disguise (another one to add to his list of drawings of her & Philip).
-Stan realizes who they are but before he can go arrest them either his GF (who's a russian spy) kills him or tips them off so they can leave (Canada? they're travel agents so could easily dip to mexico or something)
-Philip & Elizabeth lose contact with the center
-with the fall of the soviet union & the kgb, they're sort of stranded & decide to make a new life
-Paige is secretly contacted by whoever resumes power in Russia

I like the Paige bit cause that leads her through the 90’s to mid 00’s. Which we know there are Russian agents still around back then.

But I think phill turns himself end and tries to get Liz clear of the backlash before it hits hard. I was hoping he’d just go to Stan but that ship sailed seasons ago.

I was in my dining room cookin at how those dudes were running through the streets.

Taking all of the last couple of episodes into account Phil was right.

Paige came back and forgot who she was talking to, that was the weirdest thing like she's really not ready she didn't truly understand what her mother was doing. She didn't truly understand the part her father played in all of this. That was never more clear than in that conversation with Liz. Everything is all jesus as long as she gets to have some level of separation from the real life. She thought she was above being lied to. She didn't realize she hadn't hit expert level yet.

Margo Martindale handled her shit so well. I love her character.

Oleg is made of much sterner stuff than Stan thought.

Seriously, you want to meet with a spy on that SAME DAY as your hating-ass arch nemesis is talking to the FBI?

Bets on whether Stan does transmit the message to Russia? I don't even know how it would get back to the government, with Phillip and Elizabeth now in the wind.

Surprised that it was Tatiana who they had try to take the shot. All indications were that she was a diplomat rather than an assassin.

Probably could have used the scenes of Paige watching Jackson get hammered and confess about Elizabeth. Weird that they chose to keep that off-camera.

And they've mentioned Renee trying to get a job at the FBI too much for it not to pay off into something. Still believe she's Mossad or an agent for some other contract rather than Russia.

Oleg and Stan in the Cell - loved thag Oleg put Stan's Americana shit in perspective

The assassination attempt - So well built and shot. From Liz's memories to how quick a decision she made.

The convo between Margot and Liz - excellent acting. Cept Liz should've shot her in the head. Why would she leave her alive. I hate that after all this killing they planning on letting every one live.

And Liz v Paige part 100 - it was hilarious that what broke Paige is her mom's fucking. It really put into perspective how naive she is. And again the acting. Excellent.

This show going in the rafters.

Outside of Renee coming in and helping the gang out in some way, as she's OBVIOUSLY A SPY (either that, or she's a big time plot red herring, a la Philip's son).

They can't bounce-- that'd fuck up Paige and Henry's lives, I feel like. But I don't really see a shoot out coming? Maybe they convince Stan that they'll flip and they're on the same team? Or they help him stop the anti-Gorbachev guys?

I just have no fucking idea. It's exciting.

but is that too similar to Hank in BB?

Like, Stan knows its them but he doesn't *want* to believe it. He'll tippy-toe to a confrontation and Phil...or fuck, maybe even Paige is gonna give him the Ol' Neck-Snap. Fuck maybe Stans girl does him in to protect the jennings...

I agree with what someone else said above, I think it ends with Philip and Elizabeth in American limbo. Phil gets what he's wanted for the past 5 seasons, Liz regresses into a deep malaise and cigarette-fuelled depression for the remainder of her cookie-cutter life.

Paige legit goes into politics/law to help people. Henry lives his damn life.

Lastly we find out Stan's old partner (i never remember anyones name) is behind the scenes on the jennings case for the years to come based on Stan's mentioning that he was concerned the jennings were spies.

Co-sign everything Benny said.

Paige had the most tragic arc out of all these characters.

Not what I wanted and a bit unbelievable considering circumstances

BUT the stakes felt high and it was brave to not end with violence as many of us assumed.

The scene / stand off was amazing

The Renee red herring is corny but worked

Put this show in the Rafters

I guess I wanted to like it overall more than I did. But it was fine overall.

The best part was of course the stand-off, which was the best scene in the past two seasons. Masterfully written, acted, and executed.

I'm fine with Renee being unresolved. After Phillip tells Stan what he thinks, there's really no point in it being resolved either way. It's enough that Stan has to live the rest of his life unsure.

Otherwise, I don't think that Oleg should have been the only one who ended up being screwed in this whole endeavor. It didn't need to end in hail of bullets, but I think all things considered, all the Russians and/or spies not named or related to Oleg got off relatively easy. Yes, Phillips and Elizabeth never get to see their children again, but as they said, their kids are grown and would be living their own lives. And the idea that they did the right thing at the end washes away all of their sins doesn't really hold to me, considered what ended up happening to Oleg.

I also get that Paige wasn't cut out for living in Russia, but the idea that she was going to be able to just live her normal twentysomething life at the end doesn't really feel true.

So yeah, parts of it were great. And I even enjoyed the montages. But as a whole, it didn't quite click. I'll give it a B.

92. "Sopranos-esque "write your own ending" type finale"
In response to Reply # 91

I did expect Liz to go down in a last stand blaze of glory inches from the Canadian border...but this will do

The way Renee was looking at the Jennings house...is she or isn't she?
the way Stan looked at her as she slept...what will he do?

I jumped out of my seat when Paige stayed...masterful scene

Henry was easily predictable, we all saw that a mile away

Pour one out for Oleg, he might as well be dead. But it reminded me of Boris from The Wire: "in my country this is not prison. This is nothing" 3 hots and a cot for the rest of his life.

Amazing series, top 5 easily. In no order:

The Wire
The Sopranos
Breaking Bad
The Americans
Game of Thrones

I saw no absolution at the end, self-given or otherwise. If anything, thought it was close to The Shield finale. The one thing that was good in their lives-- their kids-- have been lost forever because of everything they've done. I thought the McDonalds moment and Liz's dream underscored that fact nicely. They'll forever be stuck in this purgatory between worlds, their bodies in one place, their hearts in another. The last two lines alternating languages I thought underscored that idea nicely too.

I *definitely* didn't get this out of Paige's finest beat. I think Paige has no idea how to proceed whatsoever-- she just knew that the one thing she needed to do was stay for Henry. They set up pretty effectively that she lost trust in her mom an episode or two ago, she likely suspects that her parents are the murderers Stan accused them of being, and when facing the prospect of saying goodbye to Henry, she literally can't do it, both in that moment and in life. That moment of Paige with the shot wasn't one of "whew, dodged a bullet there" imo. It was a "this'll be impossibly hard" moment.

I don't think she plans on living a regular 20 y.o. life. I had all kinds of scenarios of her living under a bridge watching Henry, meeting back up with their handler, she does have a new passport and ID so there's that but I don't know how adept she is at making that all work.

I was hoping for a brief flash forward, but wasn't upset it didn't happen.

I also though for sure they were going to leave Phillip in McDonalds after he just got through saying he might stay. Not giving him a choice.

Stuck the landing on every single scene, every single beat, every single music cue. Give them all the Emmys.

I was thinking for a minute in the final scene they should be speaking Russian, so I appreciated Liz's last line

Parking garage stand-off as mentioned was carazy intense, i just kept glancing at Liz's killers eyes, and waiting for it to pop off.

That Phone call with Henry was really rough, same with what went down the train. I don't know why i thought Liz and Phil looked like 2 cats sleeping in the back of that car. There was something so child-like about them in that shot.

i actually loved leaving the Renee thing unresolved. Phil wasn't saying it to crush Stan's soul. He legit wasn't sure and was warning him as a friend.

This finale will age well once it gets time to settle in. Also, right now i can't think of a show that had a more flawless final season.

Thinking about it after my last post...I bet Paige uses her new identity to bail out of the country and relocate with Pastor Tim, that's why they didn't make him give them up. Left the door open for that.
