"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (*sighs* QT, 2019)"

I hope T.C. knows better than to join this.

http://collider.com/new-quentin-tarantino-movie-title-cast-synopsis-brad-pitt/

Quentin Tarantino’s potentially penultimate film is firming up. We learned a few months ago that the Kill Bill filmmaker had finished a new script and was aiming high in casting a story tangentially connected to the murder of Sharon Tate. Plot details trickled out here and there, but Sony Pictures tonight announced a title, synopsis, and initial cast for the movie, giving us some official info in one neat batch.

Leonardo DiCaprio is firmed up in the lead role, and Brad Pitt will be co-starring alongside him in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. That’s the title of the new Quentin Tarantino movie, and the logline is as follows:

Tarantino describes it as “a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate.”

While earlier reports had Tom Cruise eyed for a role, he’s not mentioned in this press release. It’s unclear if Cruise ultimately passed on the project, or if negotiations are still ongoing. Margot Robbie is reportedly being eyed to play Tate, Cruise may or may not have been pegged to play a prosecutor, and Tarantino has also reportedly written a supporting role with Al Pacino in mind.

There was some question over whether this movie would proceed with this ideal cast in the wake of revelations from Uma Thurman, who recounted some troubling stories from her time on the set of Kill Bill where she was put in harm’s way during a stunt gone wrong. The actress subsequently clarified her story to lessen the blame on Tarantino himself, and he also gave a separate interview where he took responsibility, but it certainly brought up some unsettling issues.

DiCaprio and Pitt are both reuniting with Tarantino here after working with the filmmaker on Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds, respectively. This casting is kind of perfect—I can definitely see Pitt as DiCaprio’s stunt double—and I’m curious to see how the rest of the ensemble fills out. DiCaprio is famously picky about his roles and hasn’t worked since The Revenant, which finally won him an Oscar. Pitt, meanwhile, most recently wrapped James Gray’s sci-fi film Ad Astra and may or may not be reteaming with David Fincher on World War Z 2.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood marks a different kind of first for Tarantino: It’s his first movie without Harvey Weinstein. Indeed, after the revelations about Weinstein’s abhorrent behavior, Tarantino dropped the producer and after being wooed by various studios around town, is making Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with Sony Pictures.

The filmmaker revealed in the press release that he’s been working on this script for five years (so he started it right after Django Unchained) and notes that he’s been living in Los Angeles for most of his life. “I’m very excited to tell this story of an LA and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore,” noted Tarantino, adding “And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theaters on August 9, 2019.

A DiCaprio/Pitt/Cruise/Robbie cast in a popular genre/period with a director known for generating Oscar-winning acting roles...sounds like a no-brainer unless you think it's going to get raked for the Thurman issue, the old ass Polanksi interview, or the subject matter, (but it doesn't sound like Manson/Tate are a focus of this at all, so that probably won't be much of an issue.)

I'd rather see Cruise in this shit than yet another summer blockbuster...

Tarantino has yet to make an outright bad movie so far, though IMO The Hateful Eight comes close.

At the same time though I think there's something tactless/tasteless about using Sharon Tate's murder as just the backdrop to a movie.

It's like right when Hollywood seems to be taking small steps in the right direction as far as stronger female characters and feminist narratives, here comes Tarantino with a movie that only in part involves the true story of the brutal murder of a pregnant woman. And the movie isn't even about her per se.

Shit is not what we need right now.

But Star Trek was announced after this movie. So maybe he was going to work on both.

I've liked all of Tarantino's movies except maybe the Hateful Eight, but I kind of want him to stay away from the franchise.

I'm not a Trekkie, but I like the shows and movies. I'm more than a little turned off by the idea of Tarantino coming in and has everybody dropping F-bombs, at least one white character saying nigga and then a couple unnecessarily violent sequences thrown in just to shock you.

Maybe if he were keeping it PG or PG-13, I'd have a little more confidence that he's just a fan at heart trying to make a movie true to the franchise. But I doubt it. I picture a Tarantino film that also happens to be a Star Trek movie. Hard pass.

My concerns are way more about the Manson/Tate stuff, but the Tate family said they gave the script their blessing, so maybe I don't need to be concerned about it.

Been making my way through the "Manson's Hollywood" of "You Must Remember This" and find it fascinating. Be good to see a film version of the side "characters" mentioned in that series.

And I'm going to LOL if everyone who's swearing that they're not interested comes back in here to trash it after it comes out.

It looks like its quality. I'm on the fence tho.

The cast looks great but I don't know if I want to see a movie with another serial killer as a focal point. Although to QT's credit that wasn't a development I would have guessed given the first trailer.

Good to see Leo and Brad acting again.

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood Is a Shakespearean Masterpiece
Everything you love and want in a Tarantino film is here, but it also has deep, real emotion.

BY MICHAEL HAINEY MAY 22, 2019

From the time I first spoke with Quentin Tarantino last month for Esquire’s Summer cover story, all the way until just before the house lights were dimmed last night at Cannes, the director has asked that those writing about his new film not reveal the ending. For a film set over three days in 1969, it's as though Tarantino wants the press — that now, thanks to Twitter and Facebook includes basically anyone who can send their thoughts out into the world — to act a bit more like this is, indeed, 1969: a wonderful fairy-tale land where a director can open a film and its power can be spread through the land, slowly, gently, through buzzy word of mouth, rather than have its soul reduced to a tweet, chewed up and spit out into the twitterverse within minutes of its opening.

All of which is to say, I'm with him. There's no need for you to know the third act of Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood. You should, in fact, do all you can to walk into a viewing cold. Just like moviegoers did in, say, 1969. Because what Tarantino gives you here is his strongest, greatest, most-moving (!) film in years, and in many respects a film that shows him growing as a director and writer. Everything you love and want in a Tarantino film is here, from the jukebox score to the great clothes to the swagger and suspense. But here's something added (spoiler alert?) you never thought you'd get in a Tarantino film — tears from a leading man (DiCaprio, playing on-the-skids TV actor Rick Dalton); poignant, even poetic scenes that will surely leave more than a few viewers in tears themselves. Just ask Cannes juror Tilda Swinton. When the lights came up after the two hour, forty minute screening, I saw her turn and face DiCaprio; for a moment they held their gaze, two titans with the rest of the room falling away, and in her gaze I could see her fighting back tears — of admiration and awe for what Leo had delivered. With that sort of recognition from another great actor, you can bet this performance and this film will go deep into awards season. And DiCaprio displays all his talents here, inhabiting a script that calls for him to play scenes ranging from witty to self-loathing drunk.

All of which left me thinking — and here's another word I never associated with a Tarantino film, yet for the first time we are getting them and I am glad we are — sentiment. To be clear, this is not sentimentality; this is sentiment. For the first time you see Tarantino — perhaps because of where he is in his own life, a man in his fifties — bringing unexpected, deep, rich feelings to his film and to his characters. You see Tarantino risking real, complex, emotions for his characters. If I've had a knock against his films it's that his characters often existed too much on the surface — too, well-pulpy or cartoonish. Two-dimensional. Characters created by a twenty-eight-year-old who draws on an encyclopedic knowledge of pop culture influences and references, but who — unlike, say, a fifty-three-year-old — has no real-life experience upon which to draw. Not here. This might be Tarantino's most thoughtful, reflective film since the too-quickly-dismissed Jackie Brown. (Strangely, there are at least two moments in Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood that reference the long, lovely LAX-arrivals tracking shot that opens Jackie Brown.) There's a deep emotional life that we sense in each of the characters that adds a layer of richness and complexity — and only fuels our suspense as the film plays on, toward the third act.

At one point, we see DiCaprio filming one of his character’s schlocky 1960s TV Westerns. By this point, we know he's this close to getting spit out by the studio system. Yet in this set piece he mesmerizes us with his range. The scene ends and his director yells, “Cut.” It's here that Tarantino (perhaps) gives a clue as to how he's writing this whole shebang, as the director invokes Shakespeare. Shakespeare! For an actor on a low-level 1960s TV Western! And yet...that Shakespeare clue, believe it or not, might be one of the clearest Tarantino gives us. This is a film that runs the range from making you think to making you laugh to making you think, What if?... It's a masterful work from a maturing director. Not maturing in an AARP way; no, maturing as a guy who's thinking, really thinking, about what he can make us think and feel. Last night, it was twenty-five years to the day that he came to Cannes and detonated the nuclear bomb that was Pulp Fiction, a work that re-set the culture and movies. I reference Shakespeare because I can't help but wonder if Tarantino is confessing to Shakespearean ambition and range here, in a film that moves from comedy to epic heartbreak; from history to dream-like fantasy; from love story to murder story -- and telling us he's determined to continue challenging himself.

This is a movie that looks at three days in 1969 to see what we've lost and how we got here, both in the big picture and the small. I haven't said much about Brad Pitt (as stunt man with a past Cliff Booth) or Margot Robbie (as Sharon Tate), but that's not because they aren't also equal in excellence to DiCaprio. What Robbie can communicate with her eyes alone is heartbreaking. And no one shifts the energy in a scene like Pitt. Each time he was on screen you could feel the audience lean forward. (Or, more than a few times, hear them hoot and clap. Also, can we all just agree that Pitt possess what few leading men do — the ability to do comedy. Believable, witty, comedy. The kind of comedy that if it fails, the whole movie sinks. There are times here where he’s almost Cary Grant-ish in his ability to land the light touch that delivers so much ). Robbie and Pitt both deliver spot on performances and each is given set pieces that actors will be watching for years -- and anyone who loves movies will be watching for years, because the cross-cutting Tarantino does in these pieces adds to their power.

In his interview with me, he said this film is his "love letter to L.A." You feel it here; not in the way of a sad love letter, but in one that brims with the thrill of embrace. In Tarantino’s lingering gaze over the Hollywood of 1969, in his showing us what he loves about all this, we see who we are now. It's a dazzling, gorgeous, elegiac movie. It sets its ambitions sky-high and achieves them. He's said that this is his "most-personal film since Pulp Fiction." Here's my only spoiler alert: if you think that means you're going to get the crazy-paced thrill-ride of that movie, think again. He's saying that this is not to be compared to that film, but that the older film serves as a marker in time; that was a film that he put his whole soul into. What Tarantino's telling us is here again, for the second time in twenty-five years, it's personal; very personal. Like, for the first time ever with him, heart-on-his-sleeve personal. And it's a beautiful thing to see.

Zero tension until the last 5th(?) of the movie.

It was a bunch of watching other people watch TV

quite alienating in that no one under 40 will get the references or shots of old restaurants (who gives a shit?)

I am a big fan but this really may have exposed the dude in situations without violence or classic “quips”

I can blame the first time on the three Old Fashioneds I'd had before the screening for the first one, I just completely lost the plot around the time Cliff has his flashback to the backlot of Green Hornet and found the movie to be totally aimless and pointless. Turns out I'd just gone beyond the pale.

I could lose the Cliff killed his wife subplot for more time with Sharon like seeing the post-fight party at her house, but this was a really lovely movie overall, and it can't be overstated how awesome it was to watch a movie in a theater that wasn't either a blown out action movie or a low budget art house thing. We just don't get enough movies like this anymore.

Got really emotional at the end. The friendship stuff got me.

The soundtrack is fuckin awesome too. Kinda reminds me of Donuts. The flow and texture.

The Bruce Lee scene—I only really cringed at the white audience’s reaction in the theater. But the scene itself didn’t bother me. They each got a shot in. And it serves the story—Cliff loses in life. I found the sparring scenes with Bruce and Sharon kinda poignant too.

I don't think people who see the Bruce Lee portrayal as negative, or even honest, are really paying attention to the movie (or at least how it's presenting that moment) or the director's actual feelings on the subject. He loves Bruce Lee and martial arts cinema in general, but does Cliff Burton? The movie breaks the timeline pretty deliberately, each one centered on some kind of lie. Rick lying about why he doesn't drive, Cliff and his wife on the boat...who's to say Cliff, the audience's avatar into this world, wouldn't lie to us about what happened when he fought Bruce Lee?

The character is never presented as a reliable narrator, and it's made abundantly clear that if Leo's character is fearful for his future, Cliff is resigned to his insignificance. In that light, us seeing that moment through Cliff's lens to me reads as a fantasy to the point it may not even be how that fight "actually" occurred, accepting that Cliff is not a real person and Bruce is and that this whole movie is a revenge fantasy for a crime that, in its universe, doesn't actually happen anyway.

Contrast the Bruce portrayed in Cliff's memory of him with the Bruce we see "in the real world" playfully training Sharon and generally being just a cool karate dude and I think you get a clearer picture as well. If you walk away from that scene thinking "there's no way Cliff Booth beats Bruce Lee in a street fight" (which, by the way, he also didn't do, even if the car spot is the wow moment of the scene) I'd argue it's entirely possible that Bruce Lee kicked his ass in the "actual" fight depending on how much you choose to believe what we see on the screen versus what we know about those two characters.

To say much more would require spoilers. It definitely sprawls a bit-- no shit, it's a Tarantino movie-- but the characters all have distinct voices and functions, and outside of maybe the Bruce Lee bit (which is being talked to death on Twitter, so I don't need to rehash it here), he's given a great deal of thought and care to how to depict these people. I went in expecting the usual and came out really surprised.

What did we learn about Sharon Tate? Besides the fact that she likes dancing to groovy music? She felt paper-thin to me. And combined with the odd choice to film fake Sharon Tate watching footage of real Sharon Tate in the same movie where fake actors are digitally inserted into older movies...it was all just...odd.

DiCaprio is acting his goddamn ass off and Pitt is a lot of fun, but everyone else feels like they're coasting. 30% of the movie is people listening to the radio in their car.

The Spahn Ranch scene is unsettling but ultimately leads to...nothing.

If you're not obsessed with the Manson story, it's just a very unsatisfying flick.

67. "Ultimately: Very boring"
In response to Reply # 0

I was bored through a lot of it. I honestly thought about walking out about 30 minutes into it.

There was so much just showing LA and the "scene" that I didn't really feel connected to - but that's obviously what interested QT (and may of you here) - and it's pretty obvious to me that he would not have been accepted in that scene in the 60's. It's a lot of smoking and laughing and dancing and wiggling and ..ugh. not my scene.

There were so many times in this film where we were listening to bumpers on the radio or snippets of songs and characters are having no interaction at all I felt like I wasn't watching anything at all. Sure they changed the signs and it's neat to look at lobby cards but nostalgia doesn't make a good film for me.

This could have been a tight 90 minute throwaway movie. Roger Corman or The Shaw Brothers didn't make 2:40 minute movies. This should have been the short cut of Death-proof in length.

It's missing the QT dialogue from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and even Jackie Brown. Remember KB1 had the over the top violence AND dialogue??

And the over the top reaction from my crowd when the final fight happens shocked me. It went from being cathartic to being hateful. Vigilante movies have always had these kind of reactions - I definitely felt the same thing when watching Falling Down in a theater - like the crowd around me thought they were righteous but they were just aggrieved and then bloodthirsty. (Falling Down is a movie where people definitely come away thinking the bad guy were good guy.)

Knowing what we know having the Manson Family I definitely like that their crime was thwarted and people lived. But the frenzy in my crowd as they had their skulls crushed, face mauled, and were set on fire made me reexamine my feelings about watching it. I was on board for the first seconds of the fight - but by the end it seemed like

And if QT wins best Director or Best Film for this film I'll find it sad. This is no Reservoir Dogs, or Pulp Fiction, or Jackie Brown, or Kill Bill Volume 1.

I saw it with friends and everyone hated it except for the last act, obviously. They couldn't believe when I said I was stunned by it and needed to process a lot and see it again. I wasn't ready to just be like "I loved it" but Im pretty sure i did. I definitely had issues with it but there are 4 or 5 sequences i think are some of the best of QT's career. And Pitt and Leo blew me away.

I am very excited to see it again asap so I can just bask in it rather than waiting for the reveals

OME / CULTURE / “BRUCE LEE WAS KIND OF AN ARROGANT GUY”: QUENTIN TARANTINO DEFENDS ‘ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD’ BRUCE LEE PORTRAYAL

"Bruce Lee Was Kind Of An Arrogant Guy": Quentin Tarantino Defends 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' Bruce Lee Portrayal

POSTED BY ELIJAH C. WATSON 1 MIN AGO

"Bruce Lee Was Kind Of An Arrogant Guy": Quentin Tarantino Defends 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood' Bruce Lee Portrayal

Tarantino has responded to the backlash against the late martial artist’s appearance in the film.

Quentin Tarantino has responded to criticism against how Bruce Lee is portrayed in his latest film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Previously, Lee’s daughter, Shannon, said that the late martial arts icon portrayal “was like a caricature of himself and made him look stupid, silly and made to be insultingly ‘Chinesey.'”

“He comes across as an arrogant asshole who was full of hot air,” she said. “And not someone who had to fight triple as hard as any of those people did to accomplish what was naturally given to so many others.”

However, Tarantino has defended Lee’s portrayal in the film and the fight scene between him and Brad Pitt‘s Cliff Booth.

“Bruce Lee was kind of an arrogant guy,” Tarantino said during a Moscow press conference via Indiewire. “The way he was talking, I didn’t just make a lot of that up. I heard him say things like that to that effect. If people are saying, ‘Well he never said he could beat up Mohammad Ali,’ well yeah he did. Alright? Not only did he say that but his wife, Linda Lee, said that in her first biography I ever read. She absolutely said that.”

The director then addressed the fight between Pitt and Lee (who’s portrayed by Mike Moh).

“Could Cliff beat up Bruce Lee? Brad would not be able to beat up Bruce Lee, but Cliff maybe could,” Tarantino said before continuing:

“If you ask me the question, ‘Who would win in a fight: Bruce Lee or Dracula?’ It’s the same question. It’s a fictional character. If I say Cliff can beat Bruce Lee up, he’s a fictional character so he could beat Bruce Lee up. The reality of the situation is this: Cliff is a Green Beret. He has killed many men in WWII in hand to hand combat. What Bruce Lee is talking about in the whole thing is that he admires warriors. He admires combat, and boxing is a closer approximation of combat as a sport. Cliff is not part of the sport that is like combat, he is a warrior. He is a combat person.”

Moh also defended his fight scene against Pitt and called the scene “hugely important.”

“In the film it was a challenge — ‘best two out of three.’ I got the first point — I knocked him on his ass first. And Bruce at that time was so cocky and maybe got a little excited and he didn’t know Cliff Booth has killed dozens of people with his bare hands — and that’s what people may not realize up until that moment in the film,” he said. “It’s a hugely important scene — what better way to show how dangerous Cliff is than for him to show up and even match him for a little bit with Bruce?”

Once Upon a Time In Hollywood is Tarantino’s tenth film.

And I am usually a QT defender around these parts. I thought the first two-thirds of the Hateful 8 was right there with the best thing QT has ever done.

the final moments of this movie were like the last third of Hateful 8 which I think is the worst thing QT has ever done in a movie.

But man this movie was boring AF. I am not a fan of Old Hollywood Nostalgia and to be honest it didn't have enough of it to make it worthwile.

I think the Bruce Lee controversy is waay overrated but if anything the movie needed more moments like that. Everyone from old hollywood should have showed up (or maybe they did but I don't know enough about that area to see it. Anyway, who cares besides die hards Hollywood nerds).

Shame because Leo and Brad were awesome.

This movie was also missing something that all QT's movies usually have (except for Death Proof). Like a crispness of dialogue. Pacing of action. An overindulgence.

Had me wondering if Harvey Weinstein was the only person in Hollywood who could tell QT to edit his stuff.

especially the weinstein part. it started off well but, by the end it felt like a
washed up tarantino flick. one last hail mary type of film, maybe that was the
intent.

I get how someone could like it, especially if they're nerds about Hollywood nostalgia and the Manson stuff. But it's just a poorly crafted movie. Overlong and tedious.

It will be a crime if Leo doesn't get another Oscar nom for this.

Margot Robbie seems to have like 3 lines, but her scene in the theatre is so good and expressive that it's almost Oscar worthy by itself.

The whole thing builds with this sense of dread. You expect a brutally violent climax...and you get it, but not the way you would expect it. AT ALL.

Man Tarantino is crazy about feet. In case you didn't notice it before, he doubles down on it here.

My only two gripes:

He does Bruce Lee dirty. Instead of a being the master of his craft that he was, Lee comes off as a joke.

This reminded me that extreme violence against women is in every single one of his movies. Hell Reservoir Dogs has only one woman in it, and she gets shot and kicked out of a car. The women in his films can get shot, strangled, raped, stomped, mutilated, dismembered, overdose and set on fire. It's all good to Tarantino as long as we get a few shots of them toes.

Having said that, this is top shelf Tarantino.

Bruce Lee is only really in like one scene. He talks shit and then catches an L from Brad Pitt's character. It's only in there to show how Pitt's character had a dark side and combat training to go with it. Without spoiling, it becomes REALLY important to the movie at the climax.

At the same time yeah Bruce Lee comes off as an arrogant and all show. I didn't like that portrayal, but there was so much else to enjoy about the film that it wasn't a dealbreaker. And considering how much the movie fucks around with history and past Hollywood icons, it wasn't that big a deal.

I would've been upset if I paid money and had to sit through this in a theater.

Tarantino love letter to old Hollywood, the movie making biz, and to LA.
Beautifully shot.

Would love to see Tarantino and PTA collab on the ultimate LA film.

Wound up seeing it two more times in theaters and by the end of the third I was totally on its wavelength and loved it

If you're a QT fan it's a hard movie to walk out of the first time 'cause it's so different from his other movies in terms of pace. And if you're not, it's easy to think the movie is just plain boring, not just boring by QT standards.
