"Legion Season 2"

Noah da Gawd Hawley just said at the TCAs that this will premiere in April.

Said the show hasn't even scratched the surface of what David can do.

Def. the most original show on tv and several steps in the future of where this television renaissance can go when they leave conventional tv storytelling alone.

It's gonna be interesting since even the COMICS they never knew what to do with him as a character; he would show up for 3 panels to just to start a storyline/end a storyline and get put back in the closet for a few years.

This and Mr Robot are my shit right now, just seem so different than everything else on tv. Also add Twin Peaks The Return but that seems more of a one off, still incredible. I love shit that pushes television boundaries and is more cinematic.

Really felt like last season could've been 6 or 7 episodes.

Hopefully this doesn't hinder the storytelling with unnecessary wheel spinning. Episode 6 (or was it 7) felt like wheel spinning last season.

is SO damn good.

so, yeah...i mentioned above, we just bought the blu ray set to Season 1 to rewatch again before starting on Season 2. i tell ya, Season 1 is even BETTER on the second viewing, and i thought it was as good as it gets the FIRST time i watched it, so thats saying somethin.

i wont go into a long list of everything i loved from season 1 again here, (since this thread is about season 2), but suffice to say that EVERYTHIng that i loved, i loved MORE the second go round...and i loved EVEYTHING. this is how good Season 1 was...you know how on most DVD sets the 'deleted scenes' are mostly forgettable snippets that made sense to be cut? well, we watched the deleted scenes in Legion season 1 disc, and even the DELETED SCENES of this show are freakin engaging! we wanted them to keep going...in some cases the DELETED scene was even better than the scene in the final product. There's some genuinely amazing work being done here.

like someone above said, from the looks of it, season 2 will continue to be a super creative mind tripper...and i cant WAIT....

RE: 2nd Ep of season 2...they're having such a good time with this show, you can just tell...

me too. SUCH a great cast/performances.

my wife is starting to get a little worried that they might be leaning a tad too much into the style over substance as far as moving the story along goes...and she may have a point depending on what happens next ep or so, but for me i didn't feel that yet, i feel i AM getting movement in the story and additional development in characters, i feel like this 2nd ep was more about character movement/development than plot development, and i tend to lean towards character stuff more than my wife does, hence why i was FULLY satisfied with ep2, and she was maybe 95% satisfied...

and again, the creativity & choices they make in this show are so much damn fun.
and i love the writing...i love how they trust the audience enough to not OVERexplain everything...instead they make the convos more natural and real...that + the great performances by the cast just nails it for me. I'm so digging this show....

I didn't expect David to come face to face with the 'true' face of The Shadow King so soon this season. I have to think that brief scene with the Benny/Lenny character interacting with the 'true' Shadow King was done for a reason. I wonder if it's possible for the Benny/Lenny character will side with David to go against the 'true' Shadow King.

I hate when Hulu affiliates hold back their prestige shows from the service. Atlanta, Better Call Saul, this, Vanderpump Rules (lol)...the only stuff I really pirate anymore are TV shows that don't get next day posting to Hulu.

I've got my issues with this season compared to last but they have made up for some quirky narrative choices (granted, I don't know the comic and prefer reading up on new developments once the movie/season is done) with an insane level of visual detail and creativity. This show just looks like a director of photography and visual design playground in every single scene.

Yep, I've got some friends waiting for it to get to hulu which won't be after the season. I finally started downloading and catching up but agree this would get more views if they had episodes available to stream next day.

doesn't matter if i am previously familiar with the songs or if I'm hearing them for the fist time, the songs they use ALWAYS seem PERFECTly matched to enhance the story/scene...takes EVERYthing up to another level entirely....

It's not as focused on mental illness and the alternate world mutant possibilities of mental illness - it hasn't forgotten that theme, but it's become way more of a super hero show. It's cool as fuck, but it sacrificed focus this year for a lot of Big Ideas and Cool Images. I don't multitask at all while watching this show, and I binge it in chunks, and even I was confused as hell about the entire set piece surrounding Legion's plan to capture Farouk.

Hopefully it pays off down the road, but it feels way too forced. It feels like just another method to express how David feels about Syd, which isn't really necessary at this point.

Yeah, I'm struggling to get thru this season where as last season couldn't wait for each episode. Just seems to be taking too long to get anywhere. I'm afraid we won't get a season 3 with the ratings not very good at all, which is a shame, this show had a lot of promise.

while i hear ya'll on some of your own frustrations with this season, personally i'm still loving it and STILL look forward to the ride every week...

i find the characters, and acting, and writing, and visual presentation ALL still exceptional.

if i understood correctly, i think some (maybe most?) of your frustrations that i've read online about this season revolve around the plot not moving forward fast enough. I acknowledge that, if you're a plot driven viewer, yeah this season the 'plot itself' hasn't moved 'traditionally forward' as much as one might expect in a typical show. no disagreement from me there. But the reason that doesn't bother me as much is because I'm just not a 'plot driven' kind of guy...im more driven by character, and character explorations than i am by traditional forward moving plot. Don't get me wrong, plot still matters to me**, its just lower on my priority list than a lot of folks i know...

so with that context in mind, that explains why i'm STILL digging the hell out of this Legion show. Hands down, its presentation is the most creative thing I can recall ever seeing on tv. As mentioned above, i think the casting/acting is just amazing. The characters themselves are well developed, and have been consistently motivated. The writing, the script is 'grown up' in that it respects the intelligence of the viewers...it speaks when it needs to, and leaves space when it can. no fear of over exposition here

and...

**about the 'plot' thang...
while 'plot' is not as high on my priority list as some, it IS still important to me. and here's the thing...with Legion i have faith in the creator of the show that they DO have a planned plot arch in mind, and they ARE progressing towards that (in non-linear ways that explore other elements, true (ie-chjaracter-state of being-perspective etc), but elements that will ultimately all become relevant to the 'plot' ...i DO think that the 'plot' itself will indeed 'come together in the end' and those elements will just 'click' when it does. Oh, and just so you know, i'm NOT 100% naive over here ....i'm one of the people who 'tapped out' of "Lost" after season 2 or 3ish because, UNLIKE Legion, i think the folks creating "lost" probably DIDNT have a defined plan/arch in mind, and i felt THEY where just throwing 'stuff' out there, with no real plan of how or whether it tied into the alleged plot, no real caring of whether or not all the 'stuff' they threw out there even ever got resolved at all....i DON'T feel that way with Legion. I feel they DO have a defined mission/goal, and i don't feel like the things they're exploring will be 'wasted time' (ala Lost) ...

i see Legion has got renewed for a 3rd season?

Hopefully they prove me right

I wonder how many folks are going to jump off the ledge from this show. I'm almost 50% certain the show didn't necessarily have to add the physical aspect to David's trickery to convey what he did to Syd, but I suppose the show runners thought otherwise. Pretty interesting season finale overall and I was pretty worried since that opening scene was laying it a bit heavy with the cheese there. It would have been cool to see Syd and the female twin escape from the Minotaur, especially given what David did to Syd later on, but that would have made this episode way too long, which I'm not all that cool with.

I am hoping with all my might that season three is only 8 episodes long because if it is 10 episodes or even worse 11 like this season was, I can easily see the third season being a disaster. I almost welcome the show runners taking their time with this third upcoming season so they can carefully plan the story out so it isn't overly long like this second season was. As frustrating as the slow storylines are for this show, the visuals and the creativity behind them make me not want to turn away from this show.

I think it's honestly too complicated a topic for a show with subject matter like this to have tried to tackle. Any number of things could have happened between David and Syd to fully break their trust and it's truly lazy that this was the choice.

That said, I don't think its an accident that in Fukuyama's montage we clearly see what sex between Syd and David looks like in the physical world, as she gyrates on the group alone. Granted, that is an extreme form of mental abuse that David convinced her to behave that way, and to receive sexual pleasure from the role play of it, but I also wonder if that isn't in some ways a little different than rape. It was a violation of trust, but it wasn't a violation of physical space.

Again, I don't think Legion, a show that's willing to open an episode with two men floating over a mountain while they astrally project themselves into bulls swinging maces at shoguns wielding swords, should have approached this conversation at this time. Full stop. But I don't think the show gave itself zero chance to wiggle out of it, either. I'd just wonder/worry(?) that audiences will be unwilling to let the show have this one.

Still thoroughly compelling television, but I don't think it's earned where it is. It felt like two seasons crammed into one in a lot of ways, and I'm not sure I like where this leaves any of the characters going forward.

I understand that it's rare for a great show to remain as focused as it is at its absolute best; there are only so many Mad Mens, Breaking Bads and The Wires out there, and even those shows have their detractors. But this season felt like it was in a real hurry to expose people like me whose only real familiarity with this character as a comic book villain is through people saying that's what he is in the comment sections.

I just don't know that I'm all that interested in Farouk now trying to stop David with Syd's help; stopping an all powerful supervillain certainly isn't what brought me here. I just wanted to see a thoroughly clever examination of psychosis through a superhero show. I have hope, maybe even faith, but I totally feel like this show got where it is at least a season ahead of schedule.

And highlights all of its problems. In addition to what Nodima posted above, this season was doing too much and not enough at the same time. And yeah, that finale doesn't really make me interested in what's next.

Legion Check-In: Has FX's Comic-Book Drama Lost the Plot in Season 2?
By Dave Nemetz / June 11 2018, 9:00 AM PDT

Heading into Tuesday’s Season 2 finale, FX’s Legion remains one of the most visually inventive and ambitious shows anywhere on television. But as a fan, after nearly full two seasons, I’m left wondering: What are all those mind-bending visuals adding up to, exactly?

I was a huge fan of Legion from the very first episode — enough to give it an “A” grade in TVLine’s original review last year. I loved creator Noah Hawley’s offbeat, psychedelic take on the standard comic-book drama, and was instantly hooked on David Haller’s transformation from troubled mental patient to telekinetically blessed mutant. Season 1’s eight episodes were a bit confounding at times, yes, but they told a complete story, and set up an intriguing universe that was ripe for exploration in Season 2. Legion‘s hopelessly fragmented, damn near impenetrable sophomore run, though, has felt more like it’s running in circles.

Season 2 started out promisingly enough, with an entertaining premiere that gave David a simple task: Find Amahl Farouk’s original body before the Shadow King himself does. Great, I thought! A straightforward, linear goal that will provide Season 2 with some much-needed structure. But the race for Farouk’s body was quickly set aside in favor of a series of self-contained episodes about David and his Summerland crew. These episodes did feature some standout acting — Dan Stevens was terrific in “Chapter 14,” as we saw the many paths David’s life could’ve taken, from homeless man to billionaire — but they didn’t really tell us much about the characters that we didn’t already know. And meanwhile, Season 2’s narrative languished, waiting for someone to push it forward instead of sideways.

It’s not easy to keep up with who’s who on Legion, either. Oliver is Melanie’s long-lost husband, but he’s also inhabited by the Shadow King. Syd is David’s girlfriend in the present, but she’s also a one-armed warrior sent back from the future. Lenny is back (with unsettling blue eyes), but she’s also a grotesque transformation of David’s sister Amy. It’s undoubtedly fun for the actors to play all these different identities, but as fans, it keeps us from investing in any of them as characters. And while Navid Negahban has performed admirably as Amahl Farouk this season, there’s not much here for him to work with. Farouk is too enigmatic and ephemeral to be a great villain; all he does is toss off cryptic statements in French and then vanish into thin air like a ghost.

Legion FX Season 2 Oliver Shadow KingNo matter what’s happening in the story, Legion is always gorgeous to look at, and it’s loaded with a superb ensemble of actors. (Any show that has Aubrey Plaza and Jemaine Clement in its regular cast demands my full attention.) But too often in Season 2, the surreal visuals seem to be the only point — weirdness for weirdness’ sake — and any actual progress in David’s journey gets pushed to the back burner. (The interludes with Jon Hamm’s Narrator are the season’s most glaring bit of wheel-spinning. Just because you can get Jon Hamm to give us five-minute lessons in psychological phenomena… doesn’t mean you should.)

This past week, Legion delivered maybe its bold storytelling stroke yet, making us think that the all-powerful David might actually be the villain of this story after all. Either way, though, that feels like a grave misstep. If it’s true, then it betrays everything we thought we knew and destroys the David/Syd romance, which is the emotional bedrock of the show. And if it’s just a mind trick from Farouk, as I suspect, it’s yet another narrative head fake from a show that’s already cried “wolf” too many times. If there are absolutely no rules to this story, then nothing matters and none of it means anything… so what are we even watching for?

It’s tricky, because the things that are frustrating me about Legion this season are the things that made me fall in love with the show in the first place. The last thing I want is for Legion to lose its edge and turn into another basic, hero-versus-villain action fest; we have plenty of those already, and this show started out as a refreshing antidote to that. But two seasons in, I’m starting to lose patience, and we already know there’s a third season on the way. So perhaps some reining-in would be nice… before it goes off the rails completely.

What’s your take on Season 2, Legion fans? Hit the comments to share your thoughts.

Alan Sepinwall on 'Legion' Season 2: Less Style, More Substance Please
FX show's sophomore season proved that not all the flash in the world can cover up wonky character work and narrative loopholes

Alan Sepinwall recaps the Season 2 finale of 'Legion' – and how its emphasis on style over substance and storytelling logic nearly sunk the show.

By Alan Sepinwall

A review of the Legion season finale – and thoughts on Season Two as a whole – coming up just as soon as I repeat the story about the time I cut the head off a Minotaur ...

Late in "Chapter 19," David Haller's friends stage an extreme intervention for him, confronting him about his increasingly erratic and destructive behavior. They offer him a choice between getting healthy or being executed to prevent him from destroying the world. David is indignant that he's being put on trial while the monstrous Farouk has been set free, and rages at the thought that Syd and the rest want to turn him into "something easy, something clean." He uses his powers to escape Cary's force field, declares himself God to Lenny and teleports away to parts unknown.

The climax isn't an exact unintentional metaphor for Legion Season Two itself – but it's close. The series isn't evil so much as it is fairly drunk on its own creative powers, where trying to be even slightly easier and cleaner might do it and its audience a world of good.

That Legion prizes style over substance isn't news. This was clear even in that wonderful first season, but the style was so dazzling, and the story propulsive enough, that it didn't much matter that the characters were largely hollow archetypes. In many ways, Season Two was even more stylistically audacious. If there wasn't any one sequence as dazzling as the black-and-white "Bolero" montage, there was so much incidental weirdness (the chattering teeth of the monk's catatonic victims, the Vermillion's mustaches, the Jon Hamm-narrated lectures about the nature of delusions, David having a dance-off with Oliver and Lenny) that the show was certainly never dull.

But all those flourishes rendered the season's main arc irrelevant, illegible or possibly both. Every time it seemed like there was a clear goal in mind – the race to find Farouk's body, David secretly aligning with the Shadow King at the behest of Future Syd, David seeking revenge in the wake of his sister Amy's murder – the story and characters would be brushed aside in service of whatever weird idea Noah Hawley and company wanted to dramatize next.

A cool image delivery system is just a hard thing to maintain over 11 episodes of television, without some kind of clear foundation in plot or character to support it. Season Two would introduce story ideas – Cary and Kerry struggle with the role reversal Farouk forces upon them, Ptonomy dies and is placed inside the bizarre Division 3 computer, a Minotaur is stalking our heroes for some reason on both the astral plane and the physical world – and then quickly lose interest. The main arc about the race for Farouk's body had so many false starts and reversals that it never developed the momentum the first season had in such abundance. Certain twists and turns seemed to happen only because the story required it, not because it made any sense: Even if Cary has recognized that David telepathically drugged and raped Syd, that doesn't absolve Farouk of any of his own atrocities ... yet he is still set free to hammer home the hero/villain role reversal.

But it's the emptiness of the characters – and David Haller in particular – that's the real problem. The supporting actors do what they can to invest the likes of Syd, Cary, Lenny and Oliver with an inner life that's lacking on the page, but it's only occasionally enough to make them feel like people whose behavior makes sense and whose emotions matter enough to stick with the story at its most opaque. (The season's big twist about Lenny taking over Amy's body didn't hit nearly as hard as designed, not only because the season had all but forgotten about David's sister at that point, but because she was barely a character even when she was around last year.) A recent episode devoted entirely to the supporting cast seemed designed to correct this flaw, but extra time spent with the sidekicks didn't offer any extra insight into any of them. And while Dan Stevens is often fun playing alternate versions of David (whether the ones in the parallel universe episode or the devils on his shoulder in the finale), he rarely seems the right match for whomever the primary version is meant to be, leaving our protagonist a forgettable cipher.

To a degree, this is the point of the story Hawley is telling, about a man with so many voices inside his head that he's never quite found his own. But there are ways to dramatize that without your hero feeling quite so bland, or without Stevens' performance frequently seeming at odds with the way Syd and the others describe him.

That the season ends with David embracing his own amoral godhood is at least promising. It plays more to Stevens' strengths in the role(*), and it will theoretically force most of the supporting characters(**) to stand on their own now that they can't just turn to the character to deus ex machina them out of any problems.

(*) He's far from the first actor in a sci-fi or fantasy series to only figure out their performance after getting to play an evil version of their character. See also David Boreanaz in Buffy's second seaso, or Avery Brooks before and after Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showed us the Sisko from the mirror universe, to name just two.

(**) My expectations aren't high for poor digitized Ptonomy, and I'll be curious to see if Melanie and Oliver are still part of the show going forward, given that their home movie sequence inside the astral plane ice cube was set three years in the future. Jemaine Clement's a busy guy, and the show has never quite known what to do with Jean Smart – so it wouldn't be surprising if this is it for both of them.

At the start of the season, I resolved to stop asking about the deeper meaning of characters' choices and different stylistic departures, since the answer always seemed to be, "I don't know. Somebody just thought this would look cool." At times, this was enough, for effects both complicated (David and Farouk's animated avatars battling each other under a desert sun that resembles the Eye of Sauron from Lord of the Rings) and simple (the season's single creepiest recurring image was achieved by Aubrey Plaza wearing blue contact lenses). But coolness alone isn't enough over the long haul of a series like this, not without something real – and, yes, maybe something easy and clean – to support it.
