"The Disaster Artist (Franco, 2017)"

just got back from a preview screening featuring Greg "OHHAIMARK" Sestero with the Q&A. hands down, the greatest thing on screen this year.
Roomies will know what that cinematic experience is like. well, imagine that vibe but with huge name stars that are all in on ur cult obsession and celebrating it with reverence.
Franco's Tommy Wiseau was EERY. he literally became Tommy so much at times that i couldn't physically tell the difference. dude got lost in this role.
both Franco's brought it.
and that extended cast was fucking perfect.

comic book movies aside, i'll say this: greatest.post-credits scene.EVAR.

i got hooked in 2010 and have been a huge fan ever since. seeing the whole experience of making The Room come full circle in the weirdest and unlikeliest of ways is one of the most satisfying things i've ever experienced. it's that same feeling when an okp 'makes it'. some kinda pride. u could feel the love in the room. LOTS of rounds of applause.

i will be fucking laughing my ass off if this gets to the Oscars. I WANNA SEE TOMMY DO AN ACCEPTANCE SPEECH AT THE OSCARS.

but i was pretty late to the party at the that stage (2010). i then spent the next few months traveling to ppls houses and holding special screenings cos i couldn't believe what i had seen lol. over the years i became "Room guy" among my mates. i've probly seen it around 12 times with friends at home and twice (sofar) in the theater.

edit: ur gonna fucking love it.

What can I expect and where should I start? Unlike most of my friends, I never took the time to actually watch the film and only know of it and the history through them and other outlets. Should I watch The Room before seeing this or can I go in with some cursory knowledge and still get the same experience you're mentioning here?

It's defiantly not every ones cup of tea.

And even if you do dig it, you might not see what the fascination with the movie is to even warrant a movie that brekas down the making of THAT movie, lol.

or with a friend. watch it at home so u can absorb all the "wtf"s that will come ur way real fast. at some point i'd encourage u to see it in the theater for the proper experience (the screening i went to a few yrs ago was the most fun i ever had at the movies, and the most interactive lol, but not good for a first timer).

i think even with little to no knowledge of Tommy or The Room you can enjoy TDA just cos of Franco's performance, which dominates and holds it all together. it's an underdog(gie) story (albeit about an underdog(gie) with lots of money to spare). but ultimately it's a sweet love letter to Tommy, The Room and all the crazy fans who fell in love with it. you'll get a bit more out of it if u watch it first.

i saw TDA with a theater full of Room fans (SO many women in red dresses lol) and the emotions we felt was almost unexpected (i mean like bits of pride and actual tears of joy within the consistent LOLs).

There's a screening of the room with Tommy doing Q&A coming up and I was thinking of going to that for my first experience. Now I'll just watch it at home streaming before I go any further.

People should watch Birdemic: Shock and Terror, too. It has nothing to do with The Room and The Disaster Artist, but it's another worst movie of all time candidate.

I've also never seen The Room. I did read the Disaster Artist book a few months ago, and then checked out all the famous scenes on Youtube...but I think I'll watch the real movie before this. I thought the book was SO great and truly cannot wait for this.

Sestero was doing a signing after the screening last night but i had to jet :/ oh bye Mark.

u should most definitely have a full viewing of The Room beforehand. at least to appreciate how they remade everything (they do shot-by-shot comparisons during the credits and they absolutely nail it).

I suspect many others will like it too. Franco’s terrific, it’s a weird character in a buddy comedy, and it’s frequently quite funny.

I do wonder how it will play in flyover country to those who aren’t Room fanatics. It’s *quite* referential and painstakingly loyal to the original film, to the point where I wonder if people who haven’t seen it will go “why the fuck are we seeing so much of this?” The friendship/pact stuff is fairly rote but effective enough, so maybe this won’t be a problem... but I can definitely see non-Roomies scratching their heads.

Still, I enjoyed it. And yeah, Franco is as great as people are saying.

Unless you want to see way too much of Franco’s asscrack, that seems an odd choice for that movie. Ending was a bit problematic and not how the lore of the opening reception says things went down, but I guess that was a concession they had to make to get Wiseau on board. Especially liked Mantzoukas and Buress.

i just came back from my 2nd viewing. the ending is totally Hollywoodised, but it gives you a good idea of what the theater experience became way down the line.

Top 5 movie of the year.

Franco is a beast and gave me a greater appreciation and admiration of the OG film and Wiseau's passion and persistence.

It definitely works on its own, if you haven't seen The Room - though having full context helps and also not have the ending ruined. Wifey didn't know anything about The Room going in to this (she didn't even know it was based on a true story until the closing credits) and she dug it a lot. Now she really wants to see The Room.

Franco was entertaining in this, but it was kind of like a caricature. I mean I never actually stopped thinking "this is James Franco doing a spot on impression of Tommy Wiseau."

It was really amusing though. The best part for me was probably how well they recreated the scenes from The Room.

5 women coming forward against Franco now, he skipped the critics choice awards and laying low. Read a few people at least wanted to take back their nomination.

a few people I know told me they couldnt make it through the movie because it was so bad. I can definitely see that. Like this was so over the top and ridiculous at times you have to at least know about The Room to enjoy this flick. But everything about this was great.

Question. I know this was based off of Greg's book and I know Hollywood loves embellishing things for the sake of the movie. But did the premiere turn out the way it did in the movie. I know the screenings turned out like that. But at the premiere did the audience really go from this is uncomfortably bad to this is hilariously bad?

the first screening was mostly just the awkwardness and 'wtfisthisshit?' reactions. they kind compacted it to show what the screenings eventually became.
