"Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (David Yates, 2018)"

What an uninteresting title to a sequel to a pretty boring movie.

Definitely was disappointed in the first movie especially after really enjoying the last few HP movies.

Are best summed up by the big reveal at the end of the first movie.

SPOILER

When it's revealed that the evil villain is actually Johnny Depp disguised as Colin Farrell...I did not care. At all. I was way more excited about Ralph Fiennes as Voldermort--and I am not a particularly big Ralph Fiennes fan.

I mean, the movie was fine. I just couldn't really care about what was going on most of the time. And in general Johnny Depp is played out. Not even just because he's an awful wife beater or whatever. I'm just tired of seeing him on the screen.

HP wizard history would be an epic series if done right.

Harry Potter had gotten pretty bad over the last three films.

Inject some new blood, a new vision, into the franchise. All these joints are adequate but getting stale.

I am so tired of seeing Yates as the director. They need to switch up the director to injections some new thoughts and ideas into the franchise.

As we saw w the last 3 HP films and the first of this series - it’s medium floor, low ceiling film-making which takes no risks - the essence of mediocrity.

Unlike the first, this knows what it wants to be and is a more focused film. This is what I call a "deep cut" off your favorite album as this shit dives deep into the mythology of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Also, this film has MUCH better character work, the beasts are actually fantastic, and the set pieces are really cool.

I got a few issues, but Potter fans... this is it.

The book is talked about as one of the course titles that the students at Hogwarts had to read.

When I found that out, it made WAY more sense why this was loosely tied to HP.

Good to hear that its vision has been tightened up a taste.

I thought it was okay. I feel like it meandered in such a way you expect the middle film of a trilogy to meander. There was a lot of exposition. Much more exposition than the first film. To me, that threw the pacing off. On the technical side, the editing in spots seemed odd. Especially during the scenes when they first arrive in the cemetery. It wasn't a bad film, but it definitely left me wanting more.

...the character development in THIS one was much better, I cared about many more folk in this movie than in the 1st. I left the FIRST movie not really caring about the world, not really even caring if they continued the series or not. So, we went into the NEW one expecting to be underwhelmed, but were actually pleasantly surprised. Left this second flick interested in what comes next.

not to say that it doesn't have it's flaws, cuz it does. But for us, the good outweighed the bad here. We left having enjoyed ourselves.

(semi-SPOILER)
it IS somewhat of a 'set-up' flick in many ways...so some things are just 'seeds' that don't actually grow in THIS movie.
Shout out to my favorite new character...the Alchemist!! Thats my boy right there, played to the T in the few moments he had on screen. Love that dude!!
