One of the rare "so bad it's good" movies. It's unintentionally the best parody of mob movies. Horrible and unnecessary narration. Completely unlikeable characters. Hacky soliloquies about the honor of the mob. Very eye-roll worthy stuff.
The decision to jump back-and-forth in time was truly puzzling, and the resolution for some things is laughable. One of his closest friends fucks up, they cut him out of the family, and the resolution for it is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
The "He's a gangster, but he helps his people" narrative that many of these movies take has really worn on me, and it's as baseless as ever in this movie. They do nothing to show this guy's alleged "good side" but at the end of the movie I'm supposed to be mad at the government for their treatment of him and his son.

not even in a so bad it's good. it's more like a study of awful movies.
aside from Travolta seeming like he was doing an SNL sketch of a mob guy, its biggest issue is what you pointed out in how much it bent over to make him and his son honorable victims and show how badly John Gotti was persecuted and betrayed by rats and the evil government. That was also my big issue with the movie Blow. The movie even ended the same way on some "can you believe what they did to this poor man?", but at least Blow had some well done elements to it, and is highly watchable. There is nothing about Gotti that's not terrible.
I guess this was based on his son's book, and it shows. They only thing I know about Gotti Jr is every mob documentary I used to watch depicted him as a roided up douchebag who took over the family once his dad got locked up and spent his time shaking down clubs on some AJ Soprano Jackie Jr shit.
Another fun fact I just found out. This was directed by E from Entourage.

So it just makes me think of their Escobar movie that flamed out lol. Also - the guy that played the director in Entourage, is one of JR's boys in this movie lol.
