"WB launching a Boutique line of stand alone DC movies"

http://deadline.com/2017/08/the-joker-origin-movie-todd-phillips-martin-scorsese-scott-silver-batman-dc-universe-1202154053

Starting with a Joker origin story.

We're going to have 2 different Jokers played by 2 different actors in 2 different continuities.

Okay.

These stand alone movies will all have their own continuities. Good luck not confusing the living fuck outta people.

If this all goes sideways, then they can do the multiverse to fix it.

when they announced the DC Universe and had dates for movies but no movies to put in those dates it was a fucking mess. They saw Marvel and thought we could do that. They just ignored all the work Marvel did to build their universe. They just saw the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Really not interested in seeing it.

Part of the character's appeal is not knowing much about his past.

There's no reason at this point to have any faith in this being anywhere near good.

Why not just reboot Hannibal again?

Only way I'd be excited would be if Scorsese was directing - not producing.

I'm willing to bet almost none of them get made.

I bet this Joker flick doesn't get made. Nightwing doesn't get made. Batgirl, who knows.

And even the ones that get through - who's gonna see Aquaman.

Wonder Woman will go down as the exception to these movies. Justice League come out and get panned. While it may not bomb, it's shiftiness will severely hamper the future films' performance and that will be that.

none of which they decided to incorporate into the DCEU.
coulda been epic seeing Amell's Oliver Queen get in there.
right now i think ppl are less invested in their world building (cos it's been haphazard and sloppy and a decade late) and just wanna see decent films.

Cancel these other movies (Jared Leto's Joker is not worth his own movie).

Maybe bring back the Nolanverse with a Robin movie where Robin has to deal with all the consequences of the Nolan trilogy (a villain from The Narrows, Gotham's half in ruins, etc.)

Superman and Wonder Woman are standalone franchises.

Joaquin Phoenix's Joker Origin Movie a Go at Warner Bros.
JULY 10, 2018 3:07pm PT by Borys Kit

Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as Batman's iconic arch-nemesis in this villain origin story.

The Joker origin movie is officially a go at Warner Bros.

Joaquin Phoenix recently finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman and shooting is set to begin in September in New York.

Todd Phillips is directing the film and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

Warners has yet to stake out a release date for the film, which goes against the grain of most comic book movies that have flags planted years in advance. But the Joker stand-alone pic is meant to be different from other comic book superhero movies.

The project's budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the stand-alone is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.

That said, there is a chance that the movie could be ready for release as early as late 2019, depending on various factors.

Warners has a possible second Joker movie in the works as Jared Leto, who played the character in Suicide Squad, now has his own solo film project in development.

Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Wolf of Wall Street) is producer on the Joker origin stand-alone, while Richard Baratta is an executive producer.

Phoenix, who won a best actor award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival for Lynne Ramsey’s You Were Never Really Here, next stars in Gus Van Sant's Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot, which opens Friday.

If this movie becomes a "we created The Joker by being mean to him" type of thing-- and Phillips isn't exactly known for his refined sociopolitical views-- then god fucking dammit.

Christopher Nolan did the character justice by making him the ultimate trickster. Almost more the personification of chaos than an actual supervillain. More Loki than the MCU's Loki. And the lack of concrete backstory means we never really know where the hell he's coming from.

Now they're going to completely undo all of that.

I didn't care much for Jared Leto's Joker, but I'd prefer that they just ride it out with him over giving us some tragic origin story that's only going to make the character 1000x less menacing.

I'm perfectly fine without this. Considering the various takes we've had over the years everybody kinds 'gets' who he is and doesn't need to know or care about why. We had The Killing Joke and the brief bit in Batman '89. Just leave it be.

Besides, if it isn't Hamil, Ledger, or Romero IDGAF

And they did it in a pretty fun way. Joker origin stories aren't NECESSARILY trash, but they have every right to be. That said, they took advantage of an interactive medium in a way a film necessarily can't. If you haven't played it, I'll leave a little room for a basic synopsis:

SPOILER

Bruce Wayne meets The Joker, going by the name "John", during the first season through a somewhat convoluted but fairly original plot in which Vicki Vale and Penguin run a smear campaign against the secretly criminal Wayne family, execute a corporate takeover of Wayne Enterprises and inject him with an agrro drug that results in him being committed to Arkham Asylum. John takes a liking to Bruce and helps him escape.

In the second season, most of the plot revolves around trying to figure out the motivation behind a terrorist attack orchestrated by The Riddler, who dies pretty early on in the story. Bruce is approached by John, released on good behavior, to join a group called The Pact, a connected group of individuals connected to Arkham Asylum who are presented as trying to make sense of a fractured society. Bruce becomes a mole within the organization for GCPD (and Batman) and attempts to remain undercover in his civilian persona while thwarting villains like Bane and Mr. Freeze as Batman.

If you're unfamiliar with the Telltale formula, they are essentially Choose Your Own Adventure novels and much of the season revolves around Bruce advising John and his group about the vigilante actions they take throughout the story. In the final episode, when John reveals himself as The Joker and Bruce as The Batman, and the player discovers that John was the mastermind behind The Riddler's plan, much of the choices you've made in conversations with him at bars, during stakeouts, plotting missions and so on determines whether Joker begrudgingly respects Batman or outright loathes him. To that end, when Joker is eventually returned to Arkham in the post credits sequence he's either visited by Bruce as a quasi-friend or seen plotting his revenge.

-----

All that to say I'm pretty sure this movie will be average at best, but if a video game can find its way to a good Joker origin story, maybe Hollywood can too?

'Joker' Origin Movie Lands Fall 2019 Release Date
JULY 18, 2018 4:02pm PT by Pamela McClintock, Borys Kit

Joaquin Phoenix is starring as the iconic villain in the Warner Bros. and DC film, which has gotten its official title — 'Joker.'

Director Todd Phillips' stand-alone Joker movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is set to hit theaters Oct. 4, 2019, Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow said late Wednesday afternoon.

The release date, and title, were revealed just as this year's edition of the ultimate fanboy gathering — Comic-Con — got underway in San Diego. Warners and DC will take the stage there on Saturday.

October 2019 boasts a slew of high-profile titles. Joker will open opposite Paramount's Gemini Man and Fox's The Woman in the Window, followed a week later by Disney's Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson and fellow Warners title The Goldfinch. And on Nov. 1, DC and Warners will unfurl Wonder Woman 1984.

Last month, Phoenix finalized his deal to star as the arch-nemesis of Batman. The studio describes Phillips' film as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” Phillips and Scott Silver co-wrote the script.

Joker's budget is in the $55 million range, significantly lower than the tentpoles that dominate the form. And the movie, set to begin production later this year, is meant to be darker and more experimental in tone and content (at least as experimental as a studio can be with established brands such as DC), which is described as being akin to a crime drama.

Emma Tillinger Koskoff will produce Joker, with Richard Baratta executive producing.

Phoenix is currently in theaters in Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was a huge success or a complete bomb. Leaning towards a bomb. It appears Scorsese had some involvement in the film early on so I'm hoping he left because of some conflict and not because the script stunk.

Jack and Heath both turned in iconic takes on the character, and Leto had a stab at it as well. That’s THREE different turns on screen. The ground is pretty well tread.

My guess is this particular clown motif isn't the "new" look.

My understanding is that this is an origin story, so it makes sense to show a more generic look early in the film.

I'm sure we'll get green and purple at some point.
