It's going to be interesting since 'Glass' effectively already had an origin story so this would probably be a continuation of what he's been through.

That said, Unbreakable is still one of the GOAT superhero movies (and im mad that even I forget to throw it out there when we do our marvel vs dc lists) and M.Night going blatantly on all in on the genre this time will breathe some fresh air.

The First Footage From the Unbreakable Sequel Glass Includes a Supervillain Team-Up
Germain Lussier
Today 4:05pm

Before M. Night Shyamalan debuted the first footage from his upcoming movie Glass at CinemaCon, his star Samuel L. Jackson had something to say. “It’s about time I got the title role in my own motherfucking movie,” he said to the audience in Las Vegas. And, from the looks of the footage, what a movie this could be.

Glass is the sequel to both 2000's Unbreakable as well as 2017's Split, which ends with the reveal that it’s set in the same world as Unbreakable. The new footage started with Sarah Paulson’s character looking right into the camera.

“It’s amazing to meet you,” she said. “It’s simply extraordinary.” As she speaks, there are shots of some kind of imposing institution she’s likely inside of. She explains to someone that she’s a psychologist who specializes in a growing field she refers to as “delusions of grandeur.” Or, basically, people who believe they’re superheroes.

The film cuts to reveal who she’s talking to. It’s Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), the Horde (James McAvoy), and David Dunn (Bruce Willis), all characters from Shyamalan’s previous films. They are all in the same room, in what we think is a mental institution, sitting next to each other. Each of the characters has aged significantly, with Mr. Glass’s hair even wilder than before, and David Dunn with a grey beard. She proceeds to explain how each of them believes they have special powers and runs down what each character believes about themselves.

She begins to explain who Mr. Glass, the Horde, and David Dunn are and we see brief glimpses of a comic book shop, Dunn in the rain, a train, just lots of iconography from the three characters. The focus begins with Dunn, who we see in his house explaining to someone he’s “in security” and, when he touches people, he can see their secrets. The doctor sums him up by saying “you think you are a protector.”

Next is Kevin Wendell Crumb, McAvoy’s character, with 24 different personalities sometimes referred to as the Horde. The doctor explains that she believes that he has multiple personalities inside him, but she doesn’t believe that one of those is a superhuman called the Beast. As she explains this, we see that Kevin’s penchant for kidnapping has continued, as he’s tied up four cheerleaders. “Why do you believe you are more than human?” the doctor asks.

But then the doctor is interrupted. “And yet, it is true,” Mr. Glass says. “My bones break very easily,” he says as he breaks down, no pun intended, all of the breaks he’s had in his life. “This is not a cartoon,” he continues. “This is the real world. But some of us don’t die with bullets.” Cut to a scene of Kevin, as the Beast, being shot at and living. “Some of us can bend steel.” Cut to a shot of David bending steel. “I’ve been waiting for the world to see that we exist.”

There’s a shot of Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy reprising her role from Split) walking in a hallway. Another of her reuniting with Kevin and he, as the child Hedwig, saying “No fricking way.” A shot of Mr. Glass asking Kevin, “May I meet the Beast?” Kevin emerges from the dark as The Beast and gets right up in Mr. Glass’ face. “I believe that counts as the bad guys teaming up,” he says.

Now it jumps into full-on montage mode. Lots of action. The Beast hurtling across a lawn on all fours. David fighting, trying to save some people, he gets thrown around and more. “A lot of people are going to die,” Mr. Glass says at some point. Then, someone asks him his name. “First name, Mister, last name...” and the title comes up. “Glass.”

Glass looks smaller and more intimate than I was expecting and Shyamalan called it “the first truly grounded comic book movie”—a blend of thriller and comic book that explores real-life superheroes, villains, and what would happen if they were all locked up together.

Glass opens January 18.

a genius again.

There needs to be a legit alternative to the DCU & MCU universe. If he creates one that he started overa decade ago, he wins.

I am pulling for him.

Although, I was working on a graphic novel that involves a superpowered person trying to convince a psychiatrist he has super powers that requires him to touch people and though it was inspired by watchmen everyone will be convinced I ripped this off I am guessing. *sighs* that's what I get taking 8 years to write it.

24. "I think over his career he's been overhyped and yet underappreciated"
In response to Reply # 21

He's got the knock that he's just getting over on twists. Every director has tropes tho. Spielberg has moments where he's begging the audience to extract emotion. Quentin never backed away from unnecessary violence. Spike generally can't end movies and Nolan's movies never seemed edited down.

We give passes to some directors and vilify others for their shortcomings. It's part of the game of director worship, I guess.

He got a lot of great press because his first few major movies were great successes and of course there's gotta be blowback because of that. I don't necessarily think it was warranted but 'haters gonna hate'. (c) Katt Williams

I think if he would have had an 'indie' period when he made a few arthouse or smaller movies he would have a better reputation because directors who seem to step right into Hollywood tentpoles don't get regarded with the same fondness. I'm sure part of it is racial. Not in the sense that Night is tapping into some unspoken resentment against Indian-Americans, but he's one of the few Asian Americans in a position of influence and Hollywood likes to keep Asians not so seen and definitely unheard.

He went through a real dry patch in the middle of his career. While I thought The Village was good and The Happening was okay, a lot of other people thought he fell off, and to be honest after After Earth and The Last Airbender, I thought he was done too.

But to his credit he doubled down and went back to suspense which has always been his strength. His ability to create tension and mystery is remarkable. It seems he's got a little momentum and is about to try and cash in big with Glass.

I hope it works out because even though he isn't one of my favorite directors, I like rooting for him. He seems like a decent guy, whatever that means.

i've admitted several times that he's had grand designs and overshot on several projects. but, i've always admired the attempt. he just didn't wanna be boxed in, but i think he's starting to understand that there's plenty of room to maneuver in his wheelhouse.

An artist's great work doesn't magically upgrade their laughably horrible work.

When his material is trash, said material receives the justifiable, corresponding reaction.

When his material is great? Same thing.

His work gets judged on the merit of his work. Period.

Split got a great reaction because it's a great movie. This is generating excitement off the strength of that, due to the compelling setup.

He's earned his love on this round, just as he earned the jeers he got for that Avatar/AD run.

Gotta marinate on this as there's 2 twists and the first one needed to either happen sooner to be set up a little better or should've been it's own movie.

It also helped watching UNBREAKABLE and SPLIT right before as some things are paid off Easter Egg wise. It also is this film's biggest weakness tho as the other two films are far superior.

The last time Bruce Willis actually have a good performance was in LOOPER, so it's good to see him give a shit again.

The film is kneecapped by that first twist in the 3rd act.

Thankfully, the second twist saves the film from being a complete waste (plus it was set up properly and made sense from a character standpoint), but yeah M. Night got in his own way. Again.

Can't wait to talk about it with y'all this weekend.

None of the reviews or criticism of the movie suggests that was the issue.

At all.

The twists either work for some, or they don't. In this case he took a risk that isn't going over well.

Nobody wants, needs, or expects lasers frk this.

Few responses so aptly illustrate the weakness of a position as "WHATABOUT...."

This post isn't about them.
It's about his movie.
A current movie that drops this week.

And nothing anyone else does will change the quality of what he does. The flaws of other directors do not magically erase his own.

His work is judged on the merits of his work, not whether or someone else has similar habits.

people who don't like whataboutism usually can't confront that fact that they fixate on a person who did the thing in question rather than the thing itself, which allows them to summarily dismiss any critique of OTHERS who are also guilty of the thing...usually because they like the OTHER folks. Otherwise, it would be a simple "Well, they suck, too." I notice you can't do that with the names I mentioned.

So, yeah, you've never (and will never) talked about Spike's trash ass 30 year-old dolloy shots because you give him a pass for it (even when it ruined tone every damn time)...for whatever reason.

But you'll lock in on Night Dogg's twists like a walking cliche'. The merits of your critiques of Night Dogg are judged against the merits of your critiques against other filmmakers and there's an imbalance there. You nitpick Night Dogg and don't wanna be called on it.

it's so BORING.

Fox News, huh? That's easy. Just hold up a sign that says "Agree with me because he's a bad person" next time.

>people who don't like whataboutism usually can't confront

>question rather than the thing itself

Not at all. Rather, whataboutism is employed by those who cannot accept an uncomfortable truth and would rather deflect/divert attention to something else.

>which allows them to
>summarily dismiss any critique of OTHERS who are also guilty
>of the thing.

Also false. It's simply a refusal to allowbyou to change the subject to avoid criticism of the subject at hand.

>usually because they like the OTHER folks.

No, it's because those other folks aren't subject at hand.

>Otherwise, it would be a simple "Well, they suck, too." I
>notice you can't do that with the names I mentioned.

Because you don't get to change the subject from an evaluation of this movie by this director to other movies by other directors.

>So, yeah, you've never (and will never) talked about Spike's
>trash ass 30 year-old dolloy shots because you give him a pass
>for it (even when it ruined tone every damn time)...for
>whatever reason.

I give him a pass? On what? Do tell.

>But you'll lock in on Night Dogg's twists like a walking
>cliche'. The merits of your critiques of Night Dogg are judged
>against the merits of your critiques against other filmmakers
>and there's an imbalance there. You nitpick Night Dogg and
>don't wanna be called on it.

What are my critiques of other directors? Which ones?

You're clearly confused.

I have plenty of critiques of movies. Few directors actually interest me.

Conversely, because I love Shy and his general brand, I have high interest in everything he makes. Unfortunately, he rarely delivers.

Split was fire. I was excited for this. Because I'm a fan, just not a sycophant who ignores his flaws.

Not, as you are, a bad caricature with an antiquated gimmick who doesn't know to have a normal, human discussion without his message board costume.

>Fox News, huh? That's easy.

And apt as fuck.

Just hold up a sign that says
>"Agree with me because he's a bad person" next time.

Yelp, doggy. You said this, not me. I love the way you project. I'm not like you. I don't do shit like appeal to the crkwd.

I didn't give two fucks about Solo from jump and said as much in the post.

Do you put any actual thought into the nonsense you write? Like, do you have a filter that says "Hellyeah, that's a stupid screen name, but I digress. As far as this stupid comment I'm about to write, perhaps if I spent a second or two pondering what it is I'm about to say before I say it, it might not be so fucking stupid afterall."?

Most of us have an inner voice that runs in the background at all times, sifting things before a thought like that ever had to happen.

You must have one. You should really look for the "on" switch, and flip it sometime.

Big Reg already laid out the facts on the Star Wars shit. It's not debatable.

Far as my Fox crack, even Stanley agreed with me.

But you're too obtuse to understand that discussion. I'm not saying that as an insult, or to be cute. It's not an ad hominem, but a statement of fact.

Nothing about that comment suggests I'm "consumed" with politics. Rather, it's an apt and accurate reference to Stanley's "whataboutism" tact. A reference he proudly agreed was accurate, not only stating that he does it, but going to some length to justify his use of that tact.

The dolly shot commonly associated with Spike is originally a Scorcese shot and my understanding is Spike continues to use it as a long running shoutout to him. Also, that shot is not garbage. Spike uses it better in some films than other (most notably near the end of Malcolm X), but it is not trash.

Spoiler free section:

I liked Unbreakable and thought it was an underrated film trying to show you can have a 'superhero' movie in a different direction before the onslaught of Marvel movies (which I love).

Split, I thought was an aaight horror movie until the plot twist showing it was part of a trilogy which left me speechless on some, 'Look at the balls on M.Night, well played sir'. So finding out the full trilogy got greenlit I was happy to see if he could pull off the landing after setting up such a lofty goal.

Which I think he does.

Considering the only thing before this movie linking Split and Unbreakable together was a minute and a half scene, it's an admirable job how well he pulled off a movie universe/trilogy in this film. Imho both movies got the sequel they deserved here, and seeing a bunch of cameos of the older characters worked well and organically.

So as a Trilogy it works. As an individual movie tho, it's got its flaws

*SPOILERS MOTHERFUCKERS*

The twist Bwood mentioned above he's right on, its either gonna work for you or not. For me I was fine with it because its a pretty popular comic trope (shouts to Billy Stryker(c)X-Men 2 and underrated comic but soon to be cancelled up and coming Amazon video series 'The Boys')

Because I felt something was 'off' about Paulson I was waiting for that shoe to drop; the whole movie didn't make it too out of the realm of disbelief for me.

That said, since the tone of the movies have been very close to the chest and more about interactions between characters so having this omnipresent organization seems outta left field, particularly since M.Night is pretty heavy handed with his hints and he didn't really set this one up.

Also my not believing Paulson might be because ive binged a shitload of American Horror story in the past few months and she was def. in that acting zone as opposed to lets say American Crime Marsha Clark ; there was going to be a shoe to drop.

Outside of that possible flaw, only thing I aint like was while her presence in the movie gave homegirl from Split a good sendoff, lolz@ her therapeutic purpose and lolz@ somehow kinship with the Horde. Also Sam Jack's momma...I know black don't crack but good lord that was some horrible makeup to age her up, shouldda just gave her a grey wig or recasted the character.

I also loved the illuminati restaurants, reminded me something out of an intentionally off kilter thriller IE Mr.Robot or John Wicks 'Continental' , even though like the clover cops it felt like not of this 'universe'

I just don't think having something that big to resolve a trilogy is good storytelling. Especially when that idea could've been a movie unto itself.

When she first showed up and knew all of their names and what they can do, I was waiting for the shoe to drop as well. I personally thought she was working with Elijah. Honestly, that'd be much better than what we got.

I agree, the sudden introduction to a much bigger world with agents/conspiracies...a weird and lazy flex for a series that’s been very micro (particularly apparent in this movie when they hinted at a huge showdown in a Japanese Tower (shouts to Die Hard) but kept local). Her working with Elijah wouldda been more towarda the tone of the series

The first two-thirds were good. Some say it was slow, but I enjoyed it.

Killing off all three main characters? That might have worked, BUT, unlike The Beast and Mr. Glass, David Dunn's did not get closure to his story arc. Like, at all. Dude just gets dragged out and drowned in a little ass pond. Even though he was able to break his way out of a vat of water. I don't think it justified bringing his character back.

The first twist? It could have been good. The Secret Organization is a very old comic book trope, so sure, I was okay with that. The problem was that 1) why didn't they just kill them off right from jump? 2) Why in the world would they try to convince the three that they were mentally ill, meanwhile going out of their way to put them in rooms according to their weaknesses? 3) Sarah Paulson did NOT give a strong enough performance to pull off that twist. If they had cast Toni Collette or Tilda Swinton, it might have worked. But Paulson's character was so dull, her being the big mastermind just fell flat.

As for the second twist, it was okay, but not enough for me. Afterwards I was saying to my wife, if on top of how it ended, the building Mr. Glass talked about actually did blow up, it would have been WAAAAY better. It would have said "Superheroes are among us, and me blowing that shit up shows that you need them."

Overall, good idea, really poor execution.

There's a zero percent chance that video of a guy denting a car and another guy bending a metal bar would go viral today at all, much less go viral like *that.* People would just say, "Oh, viral marketing" or "fake" and go about their business.

I liked 99% of Unbreakable, even the twist in the end.

But when they just freeze frame and tell you what happened afterward? it *almost* ruined the whole movie for me.

If it had just cut to credits I would have been satisfied.

If he had gone from catatonic to menacing, I would have liked it waaay more.

Also, and I'll keep saying this, the movie should have had another big twist at the end, where that building he kept talking about actually does blow up. I mean, he's the VILLAIN. After showing the world that superheroes exist, he should have done something truly diabolical to prove that the world also needs them.

Just posting a bunch of youtube clips before he died was not a satisfying end.

m. night missed with this one and i'm barely into it. all of it is hard to watch. questionable acting, or maybe its the script/lines. the forced scenes of mcavoy's personality switching. the stupid camera tricks/angles. the obvious fact that the doctor isn't what she seems. no doubt the twist involves her. just a hard watch so far.

Dunn was wasted. He literally did nothing but get used as a pawn and his hyped up “potential” wasn’t even shown. All he did was push a door. I also don’t buy his son being in on the final reveal. He should still just be pissed that his dad got killed for some bullshit.

It was an ok Glass story and McAvoy was great but overall it sucked.
