Fox has ordered a second installment of The X-Files event series, the network announced Thursday.
The new 10-episode installment will feature David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reprising their roles as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively, while creator Chris Carter will be back as an executive producer.
“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows,” said David Madden, president of Fox. “And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”
good move, including upping the episode order. i'm not sure the world right now is built for 22 episodes every year of this show, but half or a third of that every year to two years? it seems like a no brainer, they just need to tighten the ship a little bit, having brushed off the cobwebs now with the first event series.

like, forever. i realize i am in the minority in that (but the truth is out there, y'all), especially after the last series, so realistically these sporadic batches of episodes and shortened story arcs (that tie into the gigantic story arc of the whole series) are just fine.

Best episode by far of the last "event" was the Lizard-man ep, but that was originally written to be an episode of "The Night Stalker."
Second best was the "Band Aid Nose Man" episode, which was a solid "Monster of the Week" thing.
Everything else was ranged from "eh" to REALLY bad. The first episode was one of the worst episodes I've watched on TV in years. Came across as a parody.

major arc type episodes without knowing if you'll eventually do more seasons, or if it's the end, etc. Especially when that mini-series season was produced - they didn't really know how it would be received, if old fans would come back or if new fans would watch at all. So they tried to do some story arc "conspiracy" episodes having it lead up to an ending which could both be conclusive and somewhat leave the door open. But that's probably why the one off monster of the week episodes were better overall.
Now that they know that the interest is really there, and that they can make it work, I think the story arc episodes will have a better overall direction. And I really enjoyed that season for what it was anyways.

If you had told me a couple of weeks ago, "Hey, everything in that absolute clusterfuck of a mini-season finale turns out to be just a dream" I would have been pretty optimistic, but this episode was dumb and insipid in so many other ways. Damn near every second made my eye rolls. The pounding soundtrack under every scene. Mulder's faux Sam Spade voice-over. Everything with the CSM and Annabeth Gish. Mulder's stand-off with Barbara Hersey and the other guy in the mansion. The "reveal" of the alien plot. The addition of Moon Landing truther-ism to go with the anti-vax crap they brought in with last's season finale. The reveal that the CSM is the father of Scully's kid. I couldn't care less about any of it.
Fortunately, from I hear, they go back to the stand-alone episodes very soon. And there's apparently another great Darin Morgan episode coming up. But the mythology and the overall conspiracy element to the show has aged like yogurt in the Sahara. Just dump it and go with Monster of the week episodes.

Admittedly, I was skeptical of a new season because last season was bad except for a couple of episodes. Also, this season started off ricky because the first episode was trash. But the show has gotten gradually better.
Episode 1:Trash. And completely incomprehensible. Episode 2: The return of a Lone Gunman. Better than episode one. Started off promising but petered out near the end. Episode 3: This was like an old school X-Files episode. It could have easily fit in Season 5 somewhere. It has a lot of the elements that made the X-Fikes work. Episode 4: The best episode so far. A great episode that reminds you of everything you liked about The X-Files. If every episode were like this, I wouldn’t mind a full season of the show..
