Josh Brolin to Play Cable in 'Deadpool 2'
APRIL 12, 2017 11:13am PT by Borys Kit

Here comes the Cable guy.
Josh Brolin has nabbed the hotly contested role of Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 2, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The production has been on the warpath to find the right actor for the role for months, with Michael Shannon almost nabbing the role and Stranger Things star David Harbour on the shortlist. (There were even rumors of conversations with Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt.)

In the end, Brolin emerged as a surprise contender, notching his second Marvel Comics character in the process; the actor plays the villain Thanos in the Marvel Studios movies. Sources say Brolin's deal is for four movies.

David Leitch is directing the sequel to Fox's surprise blockbuster, with the Twentieth Century Fox movie heading toward a June production start in Vancouver.

Reynolds is reprising his role as the wisecracking mercenary, with the story expanding to include other characters from Deadpool's corner of Marvel’s X-Men universe.

Atlanta breakout Zazie Beetz has already been cast as the super-powered merc named Domino.

Cable was co-created by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld and writer Louise Simonson and is described as in many ways being the opposite of Deadpool: a man who is a leader and used to being obeyed, who is very controlled but with an aura of simmering violence. In the comics, Cable was from the future and was the adult of Scott Summers, also known as the X-Man Cyclops.

Brolin, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in 2009's Milk, has been on a busy streak with a lot of his work culminating this fall. He leads the cast of Granite Mountain, Joseph Kosinski’s firefighting adventure that opens Sept. 22 and also stars with Benicio del Toro in Soldado, the sequel to Sicario. He also appears in George Clooney’s ensemble Suburbicon, which opens Nov. 3, and stars in the drama The Legacy of the Whitetail Deer Hunter that opens Dec 25.

Josh Brolin is already Thanos, he was Jonah Hex & now he's cable. Hollywood so predictable at times. Let's get someone else for a change. I am happy with the costume, at least he's recognizable as Cable unlike how Fox does & tries to remix these characters for whatever stupid reason.

Not sure if it is the original Rob Liefeld lineup or one of the other versions of it that came afterward. But yeah it's apparently in the works. Most likely dependent on the X-Men/Deadpool movies still doing well.

Don't get me wrong I was a HUGE fan of X-Force and Rob Liefeld in general.

But, you know. I was a kid. I didn't know any better.

Looking back, yikes, that shit was cringe worthy.

In response to Reply # 16

The characters in the New Mutants had been around long enough that pushing them as X-Men Jr./Marvel's version of Teen Titans was getting stale. Plus, it was the gritty early '90s.

Ostensibly X-Force was designed/marketed as a "pro-active" team. So, instead of saving NYC from a rampaging Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, they sought out threats and neurtalized them.

In the mid to late '00s they were re-launched as essentially a covert execution squad that did all the messy work that the X-Men couldn't be associated with.

Lots of surprises.

Lots of cameos.

And a BIG X-Men villain is redeemed.

I totally understand why Ryan Reynolds wants to do X-Force films instead of more Deadpool films.

Stay for the first part of the end credits (before the standard scroll)

I assumed it was him, from DP's "foreshadowing" line, but was still glad to see him wreck shit.

I also thought with the name of the orphanage, that the other "villain" in the movie was gonna make a bigger play.

When the energy is high and the pace is fast, this movie was just as good as the original. The slower stuff took me out of the movie a little bit. Also, I was hoping the meta stuff would be more fun than it ended up being...it was just limited to quips and asides.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part though. I absolutely love how Domino's power was used in the movie. I'd argue that the movie used her better than most of the comics.

Cable was cool...I was hoping his uniform would've had more pouches, so Deadpool could've made fun of that.

Spoiler Question:

Why didn't Cable and Deadpool just kill the headmaster for the kid? Wouldn't that solve Cable's problem?

I know, I know.....issa movie.

i actually enjoyed the first one but it got little more than a chuckle hear and there from me. maybe i just wasn't in the mood.

Also, it's now 100 percent clear to me after this and Atomic Blonde that Chad Stahelski was the talent behind John Wick

Action sequences worked. Like both Brolin and Zazie quite a bit. And the “secret” villain was indeed awesome.

On the minus side, a few too many cute music cues and some of the scenes went on too long. The “death” scene stopped being for waaay before it finally ended.

The first one was definitely better.

This was okay. It was at its least funny when it veered off into Scary Move/Epic Movie/etc terrain and felt the need to reference or spoof as much as possible, where the joke is the reference itself, not anything particularly witty or clever.

The secret villain? Okay, sure. I would have liked for him to do more stuff though. And the way he gets defeated was just juvenile.

The mid credits scene was fun.

It tries to find a weird balance between funny and heartfelt, and I don't think that works.

Blink and you'll miss one of the cleverest cameos I've seen in a while. Much better than Matt Damon in Thor: Ragnarok. Although, speaking of Matt Damon, he also has a cameo here, and it's also easily missed as he's near unrecognizable.

The kid was decent, although his funniest moment seemed like an outtake and didn't really fit the scene (the dancing).

I'm glad they kept TJ Miller's role to a minimum.

The X-Force and what happens to them was funny, although I predicted it from the trailer.

It's like an R-Rated, violent David Zucker film. They play the numbers game on us, where they think if they throw ten jokes at us in every scene, maybe at least one of them will land. And for the most part, they're successful with that.

Overall, I guess it's okay. In the C range. I'm not sure that we need a Deadpool 3 though. I kind of don't even want an X-Force movie. But I've seen worse.

the first one just flowed better story wise which makes sense being more of an origin story, this felt a little clunkier but still made me laugh numerous times.

With all the characters they introduced, and how amazing Domino and Cable were - I would've liked more of those 2 (and more Brianna Hildebrand) and less Colossus - some of the Colossus scenes seemed never ending imo.

Also as mentioned above the death scene at the end went on a good 3 minutes too long

Overall - still dope - would be in for an X-Force flick but did not like this as much as the first one

well balanced, fun & funny, really well done fight scenes and effects, several unexpected elements, and has a surprising amount of heart to boot!

Domino is a standout, and i wanna see more of this "X-force" team...

Most of the meta stuff seemed less shoehorned in (save for the very beginning and very end) and same goes for most of the "shock" humor. Felt in the first that the buckshot approach to this made the overall movie fairly blah. Here, it's in there, but not as forced-- a little more precision. Didn't love all of those bits, but the execution successfully felt less overtly draped in thick layers of irony than the last one. I like Deadpool's irony/meta vibe in the comics, but in the movie, you have to find a story to tell that services his vibe well-- I thought the last film was too goddamn cliche-riddled and overall boring story-wise to make shit work. The frenetic pace and the abundance of straight man characters for DP to bounce off of worked really well here.

Also, they put the bulk of the focus not on the R-rating/irony stuff but mostly on the fact that nearly every character is annoyed by Deadpool. They also poked fun at tropes less through blatant reference but more often through action (the fact that everyone died after the skydiving sequence was by itself better and more "Deadpool" imo than anything in the first movie).

I went in really pessimistic but emerged fairly impressed. I'd see an X-Force film.

Some of the jokes are different than the theatrical, and not quite as funny.

But my hat is off to the movie just for going ahead with the baby Hitler scene at the very end.

‘Deadpool 2’ Filmed New Scenes Two Months Ago For PG-13 Re-release
Posted on Monday, October 29th, 2018 by Fred Topel

The upcoming PG-13 re-release of Deadpool 2 on December 21 is surprising for two reasons. One is that the whole point of Deadpool is that it’s R-rated. The other is that the re-release will actually feature new footage, so it is a new cut of the film.

Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick spoke to /Film about their upcoming YouTube Premium series Wayne this week and discussed the Deadpool 2 reshoots for this upcoming release.

Back on the Set
R-rated movies often shoot alternate scenes for TV and airplane edits, but that’s not what the new Deadpool 2 is. They actually wrote new scenes and went back into production.

“We definitely shot new stuff,” Wernick said. “And recently too. After Deadpool 2 came out and we were all sitting around, we came to it less about the idea of let’s make a PG-13 movie and more, ‘Let’s talk a little bit about Deadpool.’ We were kicking around some ideas and then I think it was Ryan who had the great framing device and we all got excited and went to the studio. They said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it. Fire up the cameras.’ About two months ago we were out on soundstages shooting again. Ryan was in the suit and the gang was back together, Dave Leitch and Ryan and us having a great time and laughing. It comes together great so we’re super excited about it.”

Who returned for reshoots?
Ryan Reynolds going back to shoot new scenes is a big deal. He’s surely got other commitments as an actor, although as a producer, it behooves him to make the Deadpool 2 rerelease as great as possible. Now, which other cast members joined him in filming new scenes? That will remain a surprise.

“We can’t say,” Reese said.

It’s also entirely possible that Reynolds only shot solo scenes, like his attempted suicide that bookends the film.

PG-13 Deadpool 2 is not just for kids
There were certainly young Deadpool fans who were not allowed to see Deadpool 2. Well, they probably snuck in, but they were not able to pay for tickets and contribute to Deadpool 2’s box office. The PG-13 rerelease will allow new viewers to buy tickets, but Reese and Wernick also hope adult Deadpool fans go back.

“I think it’s not only going to appeal to kids but also to people who love Deadpool,” Wernick said. “I think it’s subversive enough and fun and creative and something that only Deadpool could do. So I think it’s going to be a real joy for not only a whole new audience, but also an audience that has seen and loved the Deadpool movies.”

It’s easy to imagine how Deadpool can make fun of the very nature of rereleasing his own film with new scenes. I mean, he already undid the entire plot of Deadpool 2 in the end credits.

A new story?
So they’ve written new scenes and Reynolds went back to film them. Did they take this opportunity to change the story of Deadpool 2?

“No, not really, not appreciably,” Reese said.

The aim of the new scenes was to have fun with the existing story, not to modify it.

“We don’t want to mislead nor do we want to spoil,” Wernick said. “As we get closer, we’ll see what the studio will let us talk about. I wouldn’t reveal too much about it because it’ll ruin the fun for the audience.”

We’ll bring you our full interview with Reese and Wernick about Wayne in January.

I'm okay with those movies for adults, but yeah, the days when superheroes had a more code never to kill seem to be over. There was a definite shift from 'stop the bad guys' to 'kill the bad guys'.

It's telling that in the comics Deadpool was introduced as a villain. He was very much a ruthless assassin. In the movies, he's still kind of an assassin, but aside from some lecturing by Colossus (a subplot which never goes anywhere, as Colossus still agrees to help him in both movies), Deadpool's status as a hero and 'good guy' is never really questioned.

Venom kind of does that too.

Yeah it's definitely not cool, considering all the merch targeting kids that comes from these franchises. There's no denying that they expect kids to see these movies too, regardless of rating.

I don't have kids so I can't relate on that front. But violence, especially gun violence is more prevalent in our culture than it ought to be.

Even though, I'm anti-war and don't watch violent movies for the most part, I don't really object to Deadpool being in the theaters. Which shows how our culture supports violence, although fictional in this case.

Kids probably have enough self-control to not act out with guns, but the least the display of violence and the use of violence as a problem solving tool isn't shamed.

I don't have any statistics but I would think that violence directed at children is probably lower than it has been, but violence marketed to kids is higher than it's ever been.

but i want to believe i'm a responsible human being and i can't support this type of stuff. i mean just logically speaking, how does this not jump out at them that its a bad idea to glorify this level of violence, sex, and adult humor to kids? i'm not a fan of overprotecting kids either, you know how some parents don't let their kids be kids nowadays. they think that being a good parent is shielding their kids from ANY type of hardship, or anything thing they find offensive instead of teaching them how to handle those situations. all that does is set people up to be unprepared to handle muthafuckin life. small hangups become a life crisis. but anyway.....this is different. this is a motherfucking cash grab at the expense of kids. they see a demographic that they can milk by basically just changing a couple letters and numbers from R to PG13. all they see is $$$$ and they can go fuck themselves.

That's why they're rereleasing this. They didn't get that demographic and they want another shot at it.

When I went to see the first Deadpool in the theater, there was a couple behind me with their daughter who looked to be about 4 or 5 years old. It definitely ruined the movie for me, thinking about what is going through this little kid's head watching this thing, which turned me off to the whole franchise.

‘Once Upon A Deadpool’: Ryan Reynolds (and Fred Savage) On Franchise’s PG-13 Plunge
by Geoff Boucher
November 5, 2018 11:48am

All Fox wants for Christmas are 12 more days of Deadpool — that’s certainly one valid interpretation of the studio’s plan to revamp, rename and re-release the year’s biggest R-rated hit, Deadpool 2, as a PG-13 film called Once Upon A Deadpool. There’s more to it than that, however. Deadline has all the details about the studio’s unconventional plan — a plan that may have intriguing relevance when viewed through the prism of the Disney-Fox merger and the future of the red-hot Deadpool franchise.

First some of those details: Once Upon a Deadpool will have a limited-engagement that begins Dec. 12 and concludes on Christmas Eve, positioning it as a box-office play aimed at young teens on holiday break from school. The lion’s share of Once Upon Deadpool is footage from Deadpool 2 that has been edited to meet PG-13 thresholds of violence and language. There’s also new footage in the form of a framing sequence that was conceived by Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Working with a small film crew, Reynolds and his cohorts filmed all the framing scenes in a single hectic day of guerrilla-style filmmaking.

There’s a major charity component to the limited-engagement release, too, as Reynolds explained to Deadline: “Because it’s the season of giving, we will also be giving $1 for every ticket sold to F-ck Cancer, which will be renamed Fudge Cancer just for this limited time and campaign.”

It’s funny to note that Deadpool is such a native of hard-R filmmaking that even its charity partner has an f-bomb name that requires editing to soften it for a PG audience. Reynolds famously championed the idea of a Deadpool movie for a decade and maintained his position that the scabby, subversive superhero from the pages of Marvel Comics could be a commercial winner — but only if it bravely bucked the Hollywood mindset that superhero franchises naturally belong in the PG-13 pack.

The actor was right and Fox’s faith in the formula was rewarded with a history-making franchise. The February 2016 opening weekend of Deadpool ($132.4 million in domestic box office) stands as the biggest bow by an R-rated film in Hollywood history. Second on that all-time list? The May 2018 opening of Deadpool 2 (S125 million). The sequel finished its 22-week theatrical release in October with a global haul of $734 million.

Even with that success, Hollywood has been reluctant to release R-rated superhero films. Sony’s Venom, for instance, was scrubbed to a PG-13 level after considerable internal debate about the best balance between content and audience reach. When Venom set a new record for an October opening weekend it likely added considerable steam to Fox’s interest in taking Deadpool to a younger audience. The masked mutant mercenary character was one of the top-selling Halloween costumes this year and is popular among grade-school fans that know him toys, video games, comics, Slurpee cups, etc.

“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” Reynolds told Deadline on Monday. “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…”

Savage, of Wonder Years fame, co-stars with Reynolds in the framing sequence for Once Upon A Deadpool, which hijacks its bedtime-story set-up from The Princess Bride, the 1987 classic that also famously featured Savage as a child actor. In eight scenes were filmed that will be used as interstitial additions to the existing sequel’s footage. The running time of Once Upon A Deadpool is abut three minutes shorter than Deadpool 2 but Fox declined to be more specific about the new footage duration.

Reached last week by Deadline, Savage was still playing along with the spoof concept and the irreverent meta-spirit of the franchise: “While my participation in this film was anything but voluntary. I am happy to learn that Fudge Cancer will be the beneficiary of this shameless cash grab.”

For hit-hungry Fox, Deadpool 2 was the studio’s biggest bright spot this year. The sequel ranks as the fifth highest grossing film of 2018 but no other Fox release cracked the Top 30. The reconstituted PG-13 version of the hit offers the studio a chance of a “Christmas bonus” and could also be repurposed as the franchise’s first viable play in China. The response to the PG-13 repackaging is also being watched closely by the leadership at Disney and its Marvel Studios and may inform the way they incorporate Deadpool into their plans.

With wall-to-wall violence and relentless profanities, the Deadpool films present a tricky fit for Disney, which is banking on the cache of Marvel’s brand not just for feature films but as a core piece of its ambitious subscription streaming service. That service launches next year as a family-safe gateway to Disney’s content. Will Disney keep Deadpool at arm’s length (as a discrete Fox brand, for instance), tame him down for duty in PG13 fare or find some hybrid of those approaches? Time will tell.

The hollow-point humor of Deadpool is the cinematic superhero equivalent of an Eminem album (adult in its content, gleefully sophomoric in its tone) or Beavis and Butthead (retooled, perhaps, as Beaten and Headbutt). “e’ve driven a wedge between parents and their tweens and we hear about it all the time,” Reese said. “This is a way to try to appease those parents.”

Reese and Wernick hatched the idea of using the Princess Bride motif and Reynolds made the call to Fox to pitch the idea to executives who eagerly embraced the notion as a way to test the flagship franchise in PG-13 waters. Still, the writers know the challenge facing the project is one of their own making. “Deadpool has been a unique property and, by definition, what’s in a Deadpool movie is all the stuff that can’t be in any other superhero movie.”

That’s about to change, one way or another, on Dec. 12. There’s not much in the way of historical precedents that lend themselves to comparison but the closest may be Saturday Night Fever. The December 1977 hit drama earned its R-rating with drug use and prominent sexual assault and abortion themes but appealed to younger moviegoers with its hit soundtrack and cultural cache. A PG version was released in 1979 and added $8.9 million on top of the film’s original haul of $85.2 million.

On Monday, the always-witty Reynolds embraced the Saturday Night Fever history as a good omen for Deadpool. “Eighty percent of Deadpool 3 takes place at a 1970’s disco so it only makes sense we’d find a connection to Saturday Night Fever.,” the actor joked. “Plus, Deadpool loves Stayin’ Alive. It’s literally his only superpower.”

I could see Disney considering keeping him if they could sand the edges down some. That Deadpool tongue-in-cheek tone does sort of fit into the MCU - though again they’d have to cool it off some. This feels to me like a box office audition for Marvel Studios
