"The Tenth Annual Spilled Latte Award Nominees!"

Here are the nominees (a.k.a. the Top 5 votegetters) for the Eighth Annual Spilled Latte Awards. Note: a few of the categories may have more than 5 nominees due to a tie in the amount of votes the nominees received. The results are in-- no need to vote on these-- and will be announced end of the day on Monday, the day after the Oscars, in order to steal their shine.

Moonlight leads the way with a Latte-record nine nominations! Fences and Arrival each come in with six nominations apiece, The Handmaiden arriving with five nominations, and multiple Oscar nominees Hidden Figures, La La Land, and Manchester By The Sea each received four Latte nominations apiece.

TRIVIA:

- 50% of the Latte director nominees and 62% of the Latte actor nominees are persons of color, as opposed to the 20% of directors and 35% of actors nominated by the Academy this year.

- this marks the third and fourth time in Spilled Latte history that an actor has been nominated in two separate categories for the same performance. Ironically, the first time was in the first Spilled Latte Awards, when this year's Oscar winner for Best Actor, Casey Affleck, was nominated for both Lead and Supporting Actor for his work in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The second time was last year for Alicia Vikander, doubly nominated for her work in Ex Machina.

- Amy Adams receives her fifth Latte nomination, making her the most nominated actor in the ten-year history of the Lattes.

- several individuals were not first-time Latte nominees-- we had several second-time nominees (Michelle Williams, Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Scorsese, Denis Villeneuve, Taylor Sheridan, Mike Mills, Johann Johannsson, and Mica Levi), four third-timers (Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Denzel Washington, and Bradford Young), a fourth-timer (Damien Chazelle), and a fifth-timer (Amy Adams).

- five categories expanded to a sixth slot due to ties, the most ever in one year in the history of the Lattes.

Without further ado, here are the nominees!

I don't mandate how people categorize performances, so every year we get people who list roles as either lead or supporting. They aren't voting for Ali or Davis in two categories, they're just choosing different categories than other people in which to vote for these performances. If enough people vote for them in BOTH categories, they can earn a nomination in both.

Frankly, all of them until Mahershala I've understood. Sometimes roles do fall right in between what some may consider lead and supporting. Viola is a great example of that. Hard to say definitively either way.

But I think a couple people just really, really, really loved Mahershala, haha. *shrug*
