Loved the characters, but I felt that they were too concerned with the plot instead of character building...hopefully they get a chance to breathe more.

i actually missed that. i was expecting to see it early, based upon the book. but they've diverged the plot, somewhat.

im a total newb to this world btw, never read the books and went in blind. but that was a gorgeous episode of tv. everyone found their balls and stepped up to take responsibility of a potentially planet-destroying event. the crew of the Roci in particular. and of course Joe and his moment with ProtoJulie. not only emotionally resonated but was beautifully rendered. the specialfx budget on this show has been movie-level.
again, not up on the books but im really hoping that's not the end of Joe and Jules.

and i daresay she's even better in the show.
the books inform the complexities of her character significantly. her potty mouth, for example, is a coping counter-strategy to her needing to navigate what is still (hundreds of years in the future) a male dominated solar system.

WTF just happened? I'm so confused. Admittedly, it's difficult for me to follow along sometimes. Especially the MCRN scenes with Bobbie Draper and her team. So why were they at the colony guarding the border? And what happened in space with their ship? Who fired on who? Who's fighting? And WTF was that at the end looking at Bobbie?

it doesn't diminish from the series at all because the casting is pretty solid and because the visuals are on point on tv. eros on syfy isn't what i imagined when i read it, but i appreciate the aesthetic they've developed with the proto-molecule.
it's gong to take 10 seasons of tv like this to catch up to the books, and they've found an uneasy balance between "holy shit" and character development at this point in both mediums. i don't think the tv show could do better without more episodes and a bigger budget to work with.
without getting spoilery, rehashing the plot on the series likes this is interesting too because there are so many game changers and pieces in motion all the time. for the characters (and even as a reader) there's never any time to relax/breathe/reflect. but it'd (it'll?) be DOUBLY crushing for some of these characters to reconcile their situations with their decisions and priorities early on.

not sure why they were at the border; they probably explained it in a throwaway line we missed because they seemed bored by the border patrol..they were at ease.
When shit hit the fan it looks like we aren't supposed to know why/how shit hit the fan or who shot first. Looks like the only hint we got is that the protomolecule/alien thingie was ultimately involved.
I assume that we are gonna fall into fingerpointing politics as a result with full on animosity/warfare between all the parties.
With the soldier knowing that something else possibly happened/was involved and working through it/trying to prove it.

I'm on episode 4 of season one and so far and while the premise is interesting enough, I'm really unimpressed with the dialog and acting. If I feel this way at this point, is it worth continuing?

The first 2/3rds is def more focused on world building then storytelling/dialog/character work. It feels they are also getting their sea legs too as far as the writers room is concerned; extraneous characters/plotlines get dropped along the way and you don't even notice, lol.
By the time you get to the last 3 episodes of the first season all the kinks are worked out and it's off to the races: it's consistently great and becomes a very tightly written/plotted/characterized show. As a result the dialog gets better (and extension the acting) because its less about pushing the plot forward but about the characters dealing with each other in the fucked situations they find themselves in.
With so much premium tv out there its hard to tell someone to sit through hours to get to the good stuff, but you're basically half the way. Stick in there.

is the changes in language among the belters, especially the use of hand gestures. they've really backed away from the hand signs and even the patois in season 2.
it makes sense that tech + low gravity + the need for suits should shift how we talk with our hands....baby brains are wired for two finger swipes in 2017 for example.
and it would add a lot to the dynamic/tension between guys like fred johnson and anderson dawes if they emphasized those cultural differences. but, maybe they thought that was too much for tv.

One thing I like about the show is the world building. I feel like they do a good job with the accents and the dialects. It really feels otherworldly yet familiar. I've never seen a show set in the future that had people speaking in different dialects.

those things. s2 has been a lot more of mars and earth, so that might obscure it, somewhat.
loved how they touched on racism / planetism in the earth vs. mars dynamics, w/ the martian troops harassing the earth-born (immigrant) martian soldier.
they used avasarala's exposition during the last ep (9?) to touch on that dynamic a bit more explicitly.

i hadn't been looking much for the hand signs, but the patois has definitely been there, pampa.

word. i always appreciated well extrapolated sf conventions. again, the books are great for providing a bit more info, but i think that the show does a great job of exposition.

i thought they actually did when fred had the showdown w/ the OPA factions, including dawes. fred doesn't really affect belterisms. he does some belterish shit, and speaks some of it, but you can still tell that he's not native and that informs the tension in his role. and dawes kinda calls that out and exploits it to his ends.

Excellent episode this week. Not surprised by Dawes being shady. But despite the fact Fred seems shady, dude has been on the up and up the entire time. Although I thought it was mad weird he didn't want to let Holden go. Dude just saved your life AND prevented the Black Sky dudes from launching the missiles. Fred wasn't trying to give Holden and the gang any credit. That made no sense to me.

Chrisjen owned this episode. Dressing down the Mars delegation during Bobby's testimony. She ain't stupid. She knew something was up with Bobby's initial testimony.
Poor Holden. Dude always trying to do the right thing and ends up effin' up. But he's right, those dudes were gonna kill that couple.

Another solid episode. I was surprised that Enwright confessed everything to Chrisjen. He must have had a real change of heart.
Also, it was interesting to see that Earth isn't exactly the Utopia it appears to be. There are people really struggling out there on Earth. I wonder if that's going to play a role in the story.

I liked that Draper didn't believe the B's homeboy was giving her about not going to the ocean.... She got to see reaiity.... Her reaction to the birds scared me for a min..... I wonder if she'll end up with Holden and company somehow
