"The Lobster (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2016)"

The movie is WILD pretentious and precious itself, but I liked it. I've been marinating on it for a long time b. There's a nice bit of commentary on government hierarchy, human interaction, and relationships.

I'd never watch it again, not could I recommend it to anyone but I liked it.

How did I not make this post when I saw it at AFI Fest last year? Oh well.

This movie is the shit. Colin Farrell giving the bravest performance we'll see this year. Hardcore Brecht on display here, and Brecht is 10000% my jam. So this was absolutely tailor-made for me.

Seen it twice now. Gonna see it again. Love love love love love it.

Colin Farrell & Lea Seydoux kept me compelled every time it verged a little too far off the rails

If Yorgos does commentary on the dvd it's gettin copped for sure...I already feel the need to see it again regardless

She was so diabolical without chewing up the scenery.......makes me hate that last James Bond movie even more.

SN: Does anyone else feel like this film may have taken place in a dream? The reason I say that is that there's this is weirdness to the entire film where the surroundings are never specific and the characters operate with a logic that feels more like dream logic.

Same look that caught my eye in Ghost Protocol

Spectre did her wrong, Bellucci wrong, Waltz as Blofeld wrong...this list goes on & on

I didn't think about it in dream terms but did find the narration a little strange until Weisz was introduced in the forest. Didn't recognize the voice & thought it could've been the lady in the car at the start. Some of the slo mo scenes in the forest like the shootouts & signing seemed a little dream like. Also weird we never find out anyone else's name besides Dave & Bob for whatever that's worth.

I'll admit I might not have been in the mood, but there's
some setup and tone that a film has to grab me with, pause

Just didn't feel it

And the look kinda bugged me out, but not in a "wow, that
is creative and makes me uncomfortable" way

Maybe I'll try again

I'm not big into satire because I feel like the 'commentary' gets lost into translation when its points are exaggerated - so I didn't gleam much about it being a movie 'about love in the 21st century/for the Tinder age' or on government control, etc...

But as a sci-fi flick, I thought its world-building was awesome. Was genuinely suspenseful with great performances all around, and it had a great sense of humor. Really one of the most interesting movies I've seen in a while

Certainly pretensious but in such an intentional manner...I thought it was excellent, definitely had a smirk on my face for the majority with some heavy cringes thrown in lol.

Had someone ask me about it, not even sure how to explain the tone or the movie really, other than "really interesting"

this is the sort of movie that revels in being clever, and the audience enjoys feeling clever when they understand it. I admired the commitment to the allegories (take your pick from three or four), and unexplained implausible events are always up my alley if the theme stays intact.

mentioning those, it’s a really interesting time for this movie to come out. we have become more and more reclusive as a society -- in the future, will we be so preoccupied with electronic leisure that even a swipe right won’t suffice? mandated “coupling” retreats to keep the world spinning? Japan and Korea are seeing that kind of self-destruction happen already.

the ostracized single people dancing in the forest together, but not really together, reminded me of a group of friends who spend a night out with their heads buried in their phones. if you choose to be alone, there's no one else to dig your grave.

the second half is less focused, or maybe just less interesting. the ending, however, was a perfect note to finish on -- appealing to the optimist or cynical.

girlfriend and I realized she'd logged into her Amazon Prime account on my PS4 however long ago and it actually has a really sick movie selection, finally saw this last night and loved all of it. great humor, great world, great metaphors, great acting. I also enjoyed the did he or not style ending, perfect for this kind of movie.

Is pretty fucked up.

Not necessarily bad, well acted, thought provoking, and original, but it's an uneasy watch and definitely not one I would necessarily recommend to anyone.

Although I would suggest people t see it just because of its message and how that message is presented, I have no desire to ever see it again.
