I understand he's been around for a long time, but I didn't know about him until Wolf Hall. After that and Bridge of Spies, I'm an all out fanboy.

Guess I was 4 or 5 years old... he made up all the voices and everything. All Dahl's books, but this and The Twits especially are ETCHED on my brain.

The 1989 version with David Jason was pretty good, but never really touched the book.

Looking forward to Spielberg doing justice to it - Dahl is the finest children's writer ever IMvHO.

The movie's main problem is that it's not quite sure what it wants to do with the premise. I heard that this is utterly faithful to the book and I left thinking with that in mind that, maybe this book didn't need an adaptation.

With that said this is worth it just for the absolutely bonkers third act. It's really ballsy that everyone from the studio to Spielberg and the cast commit and fully lean into.

Overall it's hard to be mad at this. It's clearly for children and the children at my screening loved it. Spielberg tried to recreate the E.T. magic here and it doesn't even come close, but it's hard to flat out dislike this movie.

It's a really slow build, but it absolutely earns every scrap of magic in the last two thirds. God bless Spielberg and Mathison, man. They just get it.
