"American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson"

Couldn't find the OG post but I'm hyped yo.

Hopefully this doesn't go off the rails like American Horror Story did with each consecutive Season.

Season 2 of ACS is gonna be about Hurricane Katrina which has me like :/. I wish this shit would focus on actual Crime shit and not allegorical crimes b.

Anyways this starts Tuesday night. Let's see how Murphy does with this.

I'm hyped for the OJ story. I think they are going to do a good job of giving us the behind the scenes drama. But I'm lukewarm on the Hurricane Katrina idea. In any event, I hope they're nothing like American Horror Story which had potential, but turned into some mess.

Two guys pitched People vs. OJ Simpson and FX then decided to bring Murphy in and make it a part of the "American" series. Those two have the writing credits on all but one of the episodes, I believe.

Murphy directed the pilot; not sure how much he guided the show though.

The Katrina idea is actually great IMO. Following people in the Superdome; that's really a moment in history that shouldn't be forgotten. Not sure Ryan Murphy's the guy to tell it but the premise is very interesting. Would probably rather see John Ridley tackle it than Murphy if I had to choose between the two crime anthologies on air right now but we shall see.

Second episode less so, but that's because the intrigue from the legal perspective was the best part of the pilot. The chase is simply more one-note-- OJ sobs, Robert panics, Garcetti and Clark stew and wait. Not a lot of plot there, really. The best bit was the NBA Finals stuff, lol. Forgot about that.

Still, now that OJ is caught, I'm excited for the rest of the series.

Ep. 2- they're literally chanting kardashian.

Ep. 3- "fame isn't everything, kids." followed by kim pondering that for a moment

By portraying Robert the way they are (as something resembling a saint), they're really portraying the rest of the family as a group who ignored literally everything he asked them to do.

I sort of felt the series was going this way with the depiction in the first two episodes, making them seem annoying and fame-obsessed (the chanting at the TV, ignoring the gravity of the situation entirely), but the third episode opening scene really hammered it home. They're showing Robert as someone displeased by fame, intent on doing the right thing, attempting to make the Kardashian name stand for something good, and by cutting to the kids immediately afterward, we in the audience can't help but think about how they've gone in the exact opposite direction.

Anyone else feel this way? I've heard complaints that the show is "painting them in a positive light," but I've felt the opposite. I've also heard complaints that they're "obsessed with the Kardashians when they weren't part of the story," and while that's true, since you can easily trace the beginnings of the Kardashian family fame to the OJ trial, and the Kardashians are easily one of the biggest celebrity brands in the world today, I think it's a compelling addition to the show. It's like the origin story of a comic book villain.

yup. i thought the same thing.

i dunno about that.

i think the family's fame is still rooted in Paris Hilton's fame (Kim was introduced to the world as one of Paris's besties), the reality show and Kim's sex tape. i don't think the trial had much to do w/their fame except as a footnote (as in - BTW, the deceased patriarch was one of OJ's lawyers).

They didn't really achieve fame the way they have it now until then, you're right-- it was more like they got a taste of what fame was like with the OJ trial, so you can potentially trace their interest in the relentless pursuit of fame back to that. Or at least, again, that's how Murphy seems to be telling it. Hence my origin story analogy.

But yeah, the fame of the family didn't really start hitting mainstream until all of that other stuff, you're right.

I'm not sure how anyone could watch and complain they're being portrayed as too positive

I really have no idea what kind of person Robert was or if he really did try to advise against this fame-obsessed mindset. I could actually picture one of them saying something like "My father always told me fame is fleeting, and hollow and means nothing at all without a virtuous heart" without a hint of self-awareness lol.

Kris and the kids are portrayed as self-centered and self-interested.

I have no idea if Rob was actually a good dude. I've heard from people that he was. But man he if this all true, he probably be sick to his stomach to see what's become of his family.

Shit I'd be embarrassed and angry if I were them watching the show.

I'm ain't mad at the show's portrayal of these cats. At all.

Ugh at "Kardashian brand"

http://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2016/02/kris-jenner-kanye-west-damaging-kardashian-brand

As your recently acquired Tidal subscription can attest, Kanye West's The Life of Pablo marks the provocateur's seventh straight great album in a row. However, alongside the release of that highly anticipated album, West has also been sliding into headlines thanks to some misinterpreted claims of debt and a quickly resolved Twitter feud involving Amber Rose. According to a report from Page Six, Kris Jenner is less-than-thrilled about the attention being paid to those tweets and the ensuing controversy.

In fact, Kris is reportedly concerned that Kanye is "damaging" the Kardashian brand. "His Twitter rants are out of control," this predictably unnamed source tells Page Six. "Kris fears that he’s taking the family down. Kris wants Kanye to hire someone to handle all the noise and drama so he can focus on being an artist." A group of so-called "top publicists" were reportedly called in for a meeting with West's team, but were worried he is simply "too much to handle."

However, Kris's Instagram would appear to tell a slightly different story:

Kris also attended Kanye's The Life of Pablo / Yeezy Season 3 event at Madison Square Garden alongside the rest of the fam, though that was admittedly prior to the leaking of that alleged audio of Kanye West having a brief moment of frustration backstage at Saturday Night Live. Though heavily reported as some sort of a "meltdown" involving SNL staff earlier this month, the audio was later confirmed to have been recorded during what was believed to be a private moment between West and some of his team.

At time of publication, Kris Jenner had still not named her favorite song from The Life of Pablo.

We're finally getting into what they promised with the behind-the-scenes look. I'm almost certain that all of these conversations are made-up or highly exaggerated and I give zero fucks. The acting is still weird and I give zero fucks. I do kinda miss the forced Kardashian moment though.

sidenote: love the Cochran and Clark portrayals.

From the behind-the-scenes scheming by Bailey & Cochran, to the entire jury selection process, to Darden and Clark's convo, to OJ and Robert's coke-fueled partying (though did they even have VIP sections like that in the early '90s?) everything worked this time around. Well, I guess Travolta as Shapiro is still a little too ridiculous to be taken seriously at all, but by now that's kind of the point.

And yeah, I doubt the convos went down like that, but I'm sure the sentiment behind them was 100% real (Shapiro wanted Bailey to work pro-bono, Clark was convinced she'd play well with Black women, Darden knew not to under-estimate Cochran).

And man, they are committed to keep dropping f-bombs.

Honest question. I don't recall a ton of the details of the civil trial and his antics in and around that and the murders, so I'm genuinely curious where your disdain comes from. By all accounts, he lost his best friend senselessly, so on its face I can't really blame him if he wants to be loud and mad about it.

There was sympathy for him in the beginning. I mean, everyone understood he lost his son. It was impossible not to because he was on every TV show every day giving that same speech we saw in this episode. After a while he just felt like an opportunist trying to get paid and just an all around attention whore. Just about everyone hated him and his mustache.

...when it comes time to start campaigning for Emmys for Best Mini-Series and the associated categories.

They've got Fargo, which is their critical darling, and they've got this show, which gets them much better ratings and has critical support, if, for nothing else the performances.

For lead actress, they're going to have to decide if they want to campaign harder for Sara Paulson (a perennial nominee in the category) or Kirsten Dunst, the Hollywood star.

For lead actor, there's Patrik Wilson for Fargo. And for this show, as corny as John Travolta may be, if they went through the trouble to cast him and give him producer credit, they're pretty have to give him an Emmy nomination push.

Then there's Courtney B. Vance. He's clearly the story of this show, even though he doesn't have top billing. Do they try to get him in for best actor? And do they push him down to supporting actor? And they'll probably push for Emmy noms in Supporting Actor for Cuba Gooding Jr., Nathan Lane, and even David Schimmer, who'll also have battle with Bokeem Woodbine, Ted Danson, Jesse Plemons, and maybe Zahn McClarnon, all in Fargo.

And, don't laugh, this doesn't even factor in American Horror Story, which has been FX's Emmy machine in this category for the last three years.

You can justify that now that the two seasons are obviously extensions of one another. Push Wilson and Dunst.

Go OJ for limited, run Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson as leads in limited.

Supporting, throw your weight behind Bokeem or Cuba. I'd go Bokeem, but Cuba might provide a nice "comeback narrative" for the voters.

You have about drama series moving to limited series due to short seasons or early cancellations (see: Treme and Luck). But I have never heard about it going the other way.

It's like with Travolta; FX doesn't cast an actor like Cuba Gooding Jr. on a show like this without the idea of pushing him to get at least a nomination.

...of Fuhrman. Especially the ones published immediately after it happened.

The spin coming out of it was the Bailey was ineffective and failed. That he didn't prove Fuhrman could have planted the bloody glove or that he used the n-word. The "real" cross-examination took about three days in court, and the general opinion was that Fuhrman's stature was bolstered and Bailey sounded like a whiner.

I guess the "other shoe" had yet to drop (the taped convo), but that cross did turn out to be one of the building blocks for the not-guilty verdict.

like wtf? they don't have someone guarding the evidence in such a high-profile case? that could've backfired had he stretched out the glove too.

but yeah, if this was pure fiction there'd be a million different "cmon, that'd never happen" moments.

but if they were then the defense attorneys could go up and touch them and even try them on. which is why i don't think the state would just leave them out like that.

the entire point of preserving evidence so carefully is so that it makes it to the trial courtroom in as close as possible to the same condition as when it was found. once it's in the trial courtroom there's not much need to preserve it. i had a judge point this out during a weed trial when i was handling the weed so carefully - the judge was like, 'Pick that bag up and open it, counselor! Let's see what's in there, if anything is in there. That's the whole point of this!' LOL

fuck you.

Here's what they said about THE GLOVE.

Did Robert Shapiro really try on the gloves in the courtroom when no one was looking?

Most of the disastrous ACS scene of O.J. trying on the gloves in the courtroom comes straight out of the pages of Toobin's book — from defense lawyer F. Lee Bailey egging on Darden, whispering that he had "the balls of a stud field mouse" if he didn't have Simpson try them on, to O.J. awkwardly grimacing and muttering, "too tight," after his performance. But the scene of John Travolta's Shapiro slyly tugging a gloves onto his hand without anyone in the courtroom noticing is clearly fiction.

According to Toobin, it was even worse. "The defense lawyers spent much of the examining — and goofing around with — the gloves. Just about every lawyer tried them on.” Cochran and Shapiro, together, realized that since the gloves didn’t fit them, they probably wouldn't fit the client, either. This was a fact the prosecutors knew as well; even Vannatter, who according to Toobin had "a big, meaty fist," saw that they wouldn't fit. Not that they wouldn't have fit at some point. "These gloves were several years old, had been through extensive DNA testing, and had several small samples of the leather cut out," Toobin writes. Clark and Darden had tried to get nearly identical, though new, gloves admitted into evidence for the defendant to try on, but Ito hadn't allowed it. And even though they offered the jury testimony explaining how the gloves might have shrunk over time, the damage was done. Cochran just had to figure out how to sum it up in an indelible little sound bite, and the case would be his.

...because while I knew the basics and major bullet points of the situation and trial, I was way too young to fully understand the specific details and big picture ramifications of this case. This whole trial is *insane*. Just cannot believe it's real life.

A good friend of mine says they studied this case in law school and he said it's even *MORE* interesting than what the show has time to outline. Almost makes me want to go to law school just to take whatever class he took where they studied this. Haha.

I'm kinda conflicted about his motives. Threatening a race riot seemed a bit extreme to me. I don't like it when Trump manipulates people based on fear and I feel like Johnny was doing the same. Is this a fair comparison? I don't know because you could say Cochran was trying to show the world the injustices of the system, but I wonder how much his ego played into it.

Edit: I wasn't paying too much attention to this real time as this happened during my college years. Not to mention I didn't give a damn about OJ. I'm mad I didn't pay more attention.

And I think that the sociopolitical landscape Cochran was dealing with is a little different than the one that Trump is targeting. Ideologically I don't like it when politicians/people in power manipulate the masses with fear but I think at least Cochran's reasoning was a little more sound than Trump's is. At least in the bigger picture Cochran had his eyes on solving a systemic problem rather than continuing to create them. I can disagree with a lot of the ways he approached the issue and the techniques he used but the larger issue he was trying to address perhaps necessitated some more extreme measures. Trump, on the contrary, is creating and compounding issues that already exist and have existed forever. So like you mentioned, I think their circumstances were/are quite different.

The first 3 were fun, and a bit campy...but I think this show suffers most when dealing with Cuba as OJ. At any rate, it's really fucking good.

2nd season is really gonna be about Katrina? That's interesting and all - but doesn't feel like as interesting of a story to me, especially about 11 years after the fact. I did say that about OJ too though. I guess I'd rather see like...the Michael Jackson trial(s), or even a non celebrity case.

Think they did a great job, including even the first couple episodes which had some really cheesy moments. Finale was fantastic. Thought they did an excellent job showing how alienated OJ was gonna be following the trial. Also loved the awkwardness of his speech at the party.

Lastly I thought the OJ "alone moments" were exceptionally well done. They left it ambiguous to a certain extent regarding why he was crying or somber, so you could kind of read it either way even though I think they made it subtly obvious why he was acting the way he was in those moments. I'm wording this very poorly.

Sarah Paulson and Courtney B Vance are the standouts in my mind...they killed their performances. Sterling Brown grew on me as the season went on. He seemed to get better and better with each episode.

but somewhere around mid-season it reallllly started to pick up steam

probably the "Black Superman" episode was when they had me engaged and waiting each week for the next ep

There was plenty of stuff I learned for the first time : Darden close to courtroom contempt. Cochran protected by the FOI (!!!), the sexual tension between Darden and Clarke, Jury only took 4 fuggin hours to deliberate, etc

Emmys for Vance and Paulson for sure.

I mean I was enjoying the campiness and then they took a left turn and made it super compelling.

It started off campy the first couple of episodes but it took a leap when "Johnnie Cochran" entered the scene and it hit its stride midway through the run. Sarah Paulson, Courtney B. Vance and Sterling K. Brown are guaranteed Emmys as far as I'm concerned. They were better than excellent.

As far as the murder, chase and trial, I was in College when all of this went down, so I remember a lot of it, but watching this show reminded me of how surreal that trial was. So much stuff happened that if it weren't real life, you wouldn't believe it possible.

We did a recap of the show on our podcast if anyone is interested. Links below.
