From FilmStage: The Nice Guys, scripted by Black and Anthony Bagarozzi, is set in LA in 1970’s and follows tough guy Jackson Healy and private detective Holland March who are working on a case involving the suicide of a porn star. “It is an R-rated film and it’s a caper,” Black tells People. “It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore.”
Be warned, it's a great red band trailer... but then it shows what seems to be the entire movie.

Because that role was underdeveloped, I felt it needed someone who oozes creepiness or threat on their own.
I liked Crowe in this but there were a few scenes/reactions that felt like he was struggling to sell the tone. Part of me thinks he's not really built for comedy. Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, or Wesley Snipes could have done more with the role, I think. Statham or Ving Rhames could have been good too.

It's cool he plays the straight man to counter Gos goin over the top at times but there were a few scenes he seemed so uninterested it made me feel the same.

Gosling and Crowe are top notch while Angourie Rice does a great job as Gosling's daughter.
The film has the typical Shane Black snappy dialogue and there are some very funny moments but the film doesn't have much heart (although it does make a very weak attempt at it) and it's basically just a superficial private eye flick.
I do have to say that some of the violent slapstick fell awkwardly flat. Just a little too violent to get me to laugh. Still, it's definitely worth watching. You don't necessarily have to run out to the theaters to see it though.
The pacing is good so I feel like it's destined to be one of those films that you forget about, then catch on HBO some time and end up watching it to the end without realizing it.

Gosling and Crowe were fun to watch, the daughter was indeed good, and had some very well done set-pieces (especially the party at Shattuck's house). But as said above, it lacked some heart. And everything after the climatic battle felt tacked on, especially the final scene with Bassinger. I will say that Hannibal Burress as the voice of the bee was a nice touch.

Enjoyed this moment to moment but Russell Crowe held this movie back from being what it should've been, I think. He played the straight man TOO straight, everybody else was real turned up in this movie while Russell felt like he wanted to be making another American Gangster.
Definitely pretty jilted and confused movie at times, too. I loved the actress who played Holly and I get that she wanted people to be nice and not get hurt but, after a 15 minute shootout in which anyone could have died, she's seriously worried about the life of a man who was about to kill her like 24 hours ago?
and i'm a big fan of gosling, crowe and black. but this was awful.
