I'll look at this in two ways. First, just from a movie and marketing standpoint, it does not really need a sequel. The story line had nothing to do with whether or not Dory found her memory or her parents or...anything else, really. But, Pixar can pull it off. They did it with Toy Story (especially TS3), and they did it with Monsters Inc (and I think doing a prequel for that instead of a sequel was probably the way to go there). Cars was....a mandated money printing machine, but I've come to grips with that. So, if Pixar figures to do a sequel to one of their beloved and best properties, I'm in.
Now, on a personal level, I think leaving the story as is would be perfect. I always saw it as a father going to the ends of the earth to save his son, and seeing the despair of losing him and joy of getting him back is very real. I had been going through a nasty custody battle for my son around the same time, so that theme of the movie resonated with me in a way I can't put into words without tearing up. Once Marlin finally gets reunited with Nemo I'm openly weeping for the rest of the movie (and partially now typing this) because I know that feeling and had that moment with my little one. Nothing really needs to be added to that story, those characters, that world. It said everything it needed to right there, and doing anything more may cheapen it.
