"Warcraft (Duncan Jones, 2016)"
Fri Nov-06-15 03:24 PM by bwood

As someone who not familiar with the video games, this shit looks so middle of the road bleh. The whole thing looks video games fake except for the humans.

And I'm a huge fan of Duncan Jones's last two films.

I don't feel like most Warcraft players really care to see a movie about the game. And I feel like the "You're too harsh. Gamers will see it" is said before every video game adaptation box office bomb.

The one thing it has going for it is that June 2016 looks pretty weak. Not sure if Conjuring 2 and Now You See Me 2 are really huge threats but they could take a chunk of the box office that weekend.

Was in a high level raiding guild that dedicated a ton of time to clear the content just to be called the best. I've spent so many hours on that game I'm ashamed to even admit it.

This shit looks horrid.

I know not one person that plays, or used to play that is hyped to see this. Since I have such fond memories of the game I doubt I'll even see this so it doesn't tarnish my memories that I have of the game.

Unfortunately for Duncan Jones, a filmmaker I really like a lot, this will not remotely make back its total budget. Hopefully they're keeping the marketing price low to prevent too much bleeding-- I haven't seen too many ads for it domestically.

And can't stop thanking me on the valuable advice I gave him on getting extremely drunk beforehand.

His guest that he brought with him said I was being too kind when I told them this was one of the worst films I've seen this year.

The more we text each other about it, the more I hate it.

"After last night’s opening in China, Warcraft took a whopping $46 million, the best non-weekend launch in the country’s history, taking the title from Avengers: Age of Ultron, which brought in $28.3 million when it opened in May last year.

Combine that with around the roughly $75 million it’s made internationally already, and it looks like America (which currently has a projected $25 million opening ahead of tonight’s release) is the only region not really feeling the movie."

*insert a billion people pointing out I also liked Jupiter Ascending here*

What can I say? The visuals are terrific-- it's seriously some top-notch ILM work, with some really fantastic motion-capture performances-- the action is all incredibly earnestly geeky and awesome, and the story serves its purpose well-enough. I don't understand the complaints about being tossed into the world without explanation-- I got enough of it that I could follow the story arcs. This also features a righteously hammy Ben Foster as a wizard. I mean, what the fuck else needs to be said? Hammy Ben Foster Wizard.

I don't know a thing about the game either. I'm just a mark for earnest dorky big-scale shit like this, I reckon. But I had a good time.

It’s just something people will always poke fun at and you’ll never hear the end of it.

Of course, it doesn’t help your cause when you’re the one who brings it up

As an interesting aside, my wife wanted to watch JA Saturday. She checked out for good after the bit about bees recognizing royalty. She did get a howl, er, laugh out of Hover-Blading Teen Space Wolf and the fact that every villain speaks like Varys from GOT.

We all got one in there somewhere and to be fair, I'm a HUGE fan of Best Of The Best and The Wraith. I also loved Movie 43, which is a horrendous 4% on RT.

>Don't see Warcraft, btw. You're the main one who brings up my
>love of Jupiter Ascending on here, I'd rather not add Warcraft
>to your pile of ammo, lol.

lol I don't think I bring that up like that actually. I know it's come up a few times but I don't think I just drop it like an ACME anvil out of the clear blue.

Far as a pile of ammo... do I really bust your balls that much? I disagree on certain key things but I don't think I bust your chops like that.

JA/The Wachowskis and Kevin James are the only things I can think of that I occasionally use to needle you. At least, in my head it's occasional.

No one really does. Usually if anyone busts my balls, it's either:
a) passive-aggressive assholery (one or two people who will remain nameless)
b) specific mockery of movies I loved that they hated or that I hated and they loved (really only you, astralblak, and... one other stalwart of the board, maybe Deebot, I forget)
c) flat-out dickheadedness (these people are all gone, I'm pretty sure)
d) anger that I didn't anchor the U23D thread nine years ago (Invisiblist)

I prefer B out of all of the things-- it's usually only people who have been around forever like me who engage in that style of comeback, lol.

I only remember it because it's the one that comes up most frequently in regard to movies I actually loved. Usually if people bust my balls, it's because I disliked/was indifferent toward some critically acclaimed thing (Birdman, most recently).

Though I probably would have caught this if it didn't come out the same weekend as The Conjuring.

Plus you kind of have to play along to make the ball breaking any fun. Otherwise I need to actually dislike you to make that sort of antagonism entertaining.

Sy-Fy Presents: Generic Fantasy Flick W/C-List Actors!

The cons: The cast, the writing, and the video game CGI.

The mage was fucking terrible, just terrible. His look, his demeanor, his dialogue, the way he delivered his dialogue, everything about him was third rate. It’s like some token, obligatory “producer” with stroke had a theater geek son who was super duper into WOW and the only way to get this thing greenlit was to include him. Did he write his own shitty Fantasy 101 dialogue too?

Ben Foster was terrible. Just terrible. He’s getting a razzy for this. He was a horrible casting choice. They may as well have cast Nicholas Cage.

Paula Patton? Inspired choice, horrendous execution. Nearly as bad as Halle’s turn as Catwoman.

Anyhow this list goes on. The writing is awful and the entire cast looks and feels like third, fourth, and fifth choices.

The other issue is, well, WarCraft itself. Everything has an absurdly cheesy generic fantasy name. Storm Wind! This stuff takes a bad, cheesy, schlocky, gimmicky mess of a movie that much worse, though they’d be hardly noticeable if everything else was up to snuff.

There’s also incredibly annoying, stupid character stuff. Anduin’s dislike for the mage never makes any real sense. Actually, everyone is needlessly mean to the mage for the first half of the film.

******

The pros? The story and plot are solid. They don't connect all the dots all that well, particularly with the mages.

What’s fucked about all of this is they DID put together a relatively compelling story. I liked the story and I liked the dynamics between most of the main characters, aside from the horrendously written and acted mages. The one character I genuinely enjoyed throughout was Durotan and he holds this together pretty well. Oh, and his baby.

BABY ORC TOTALLY PWNS, MAN. I’m not even joking. I fucking loved that thing. I’m gonna watch the sequel (China is making that happen as we speak) just to see if we get some time for the baby Orc.

They wrote a story that should have made a good movie but a third rate cast (Apologies to Ben Foster and Dominic Cooper but nah… those guys aren’t carrying a movie like this) and awful dialogue killed this in a bad way. The cartoony CGI would have been mostly forgivable were it not for such bad writing. The plot works for me though and I managed to come away invested in the story just enough to want to see what happens next to these two worlds.

Oh, and baby orc. Because he fucking PWNS, BRO.

Seriously. The baby orc is fantastic.

Thought China's take would make it profitable.

“You’re almost better off just making it for the Chinese audience,” analyst Eric Handler told the Hollywood Reporter last month. “It did okay in some other markets where the game was big — including Germany and France — but China really saved the day.” If ever you doubted the oddity of Hollywood accounting, consider this: “Warcraft” has made more money than any other video-game adaptation ever made, and it’s still losing money.
