"Bridge of Spies (Spielberg, 2015)"

Don't know what happened to the previous post.

This was good. Nothing spectacular but it's good. I hope The BFG gives us fun Spielberg again.

Maybe on video.

This seems like a snoozefest.

expected slightly more from a Coen bros co-script but they did keep the chuckles coming.
Tom Hanks seemed like he was really into this, been a while it seems. Mark Rylance was dope as well, and Amy Ryan did well enough in a limited role. Others were more paint-by-the-numbers

Shame it hasn't gotten more attention. I'm still hopeful there'll be Oscar buzz.

The Coens' influence is clear (in a good way) in the writing. Spielberg's craft is as strong as ever.

Hanks is great, as expected, but Rylance was the real revelation. Between this and Wolf Hall, I don't remember an actor I've ever appreciated more.

didn't watch the trailer or anything promotional, so i went in blind.

i haven't been amongst a theater audience that old and that white since saving private ryan. lol

cold war history buffs will love this film.

a very sardonic look/narrative on "duck and cover" paranoia too.

spoilers

- fence-jumping motif: the brooklyn kids hopping the fence freely at the end was quite cathartic for donovan, after having witnessed what he did from the berlin train passing by *the wall*.

- after the exchange, powers telling the CIA that he didn't confess anything to the russians during his interrogation/captivity is kind of a conundrum. not saying spielberg was being historically inaccurate, but in reality powers did actually admit to the U-2 spy plane's mission and purpose the russians.

Now that is cinema!
I thought I was in for a bland boring story about the cold war. Instead I got treated to great cinematography, a beautiful score and great performances by the cast.
I've been unfair to Spielberg. I did not enjoy War Horse so I never watched Lincoln. I have watched and enjoyed every single Spielberg movie until The Adventures of Tintin. Since then, it feels like I wasn't vibing with him anymore. The strength of Bridge of Spies will make me watch Lincoln and who knows give War Horse another look.

Bridge of Spies was awesome. One of my favorite of 2015.

I'm kinda shocked to see that the Coen bros co-scripted. Didn't see any evidence of their style. There is alot of on-the-nose Speilberg type stuff but it's bearable. The lighting, cinematography and other technical aspects are master-level shit.
