"Greatest Anime TV shows/films?"

I'm a newb. I've seen the ghost in the shell film, Akira, and the Hayao Miyazaki films. I liked them all. I've tried a few shows, but haven't been able to push past the first few episodes (Hunter x Hunter, Full brother alchemist:brotherhood, and attack on Titan). Can you guys make a list of recommendations ? I'll try these shows again if you think I should.

It certainly involves giant robots and people using them to fight, but it almost feels like its so much more than that. I'd say Gundam or Aldnoah Zero are more along the lines of a pure mecha anime.

With that being said Evangelion is one of my fav anime series of all time and I revisit it every year. If you haven't seen it I can highly recommend it.

"The End of Evangelion" movie

You'll know why once you watch the last two episodes. It really pieces things together well and gives you a good visual on what is going on during this time.

I'd agree with Paps, and I don't specifically care about mecha.

Eva's one of the best regardless of sub-genre, and its one of the most rewarding shows for repeat viewing because of the wealth of symbolism. Especially since the symbols don't really mean anything. There's a ton to work with, and in the end you can still paint whatever meaning you want on to it.

I would start with shows with not that many episodes where you can manage to watch from beginning to end:
-Cowboys bebop Both the TV show and the movie.
-Ninja Scrolls
-Beserk
-Rurouni Kenshin
-Samurai Champloo
-Tokyo Tribe 2
-Steins Gate
-Black Lagoon
-Darker Than Black
-Tiger & Bunny
-Trigun
-Durarara!
-Michiko To Hatchin
-Kill La Kill

Compared to some of the folks here, I am relatively new watcher of anime. I really started watching in 2002 with Naruto.

Here's how I would break it down

Never ending battle-type anime
For each of these series I recommend consulting the episode guide and try to skip filler episodes (original episodes that are not from the manga). I usually go to nameofshow.wikia.com and go to the episode guide there.

Naruto
Bleach
Fairy Tail
Hunter x Hunter

Hunter x Hunter is probably the best of these 4 right now, since it is the newest/freshest but the other three all used to be great.

A note on Hunter x Hunter. I thought it was boring until about 30 episodes in when the show finally introduce their version of magic (called En). So if you can make it through that first arc, you'll get to some awesome stuff.

I'm kinda with you on Attack on Titan, I got 8 episode in and I'm having trouble staying with it.

Shorter episode length anime usually around 26 episodes
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Kill la Kill
Sword Art Online (the 2nd half of first season is terrible) but the 1st half is so awesome.
Fate Zero
Fate/Stay Night
Soul Eater

There a lot more that I have forgotten. I think this an okay start

In response to Reply # 0

Like BrillRick said above, out of all the ongoing fight style anime I do feel like Hunter x Hunter is the best. I'd place it way above Naruto which I got tired of.

I really think it has no filler, which is why I've enjoyed it so much. Every episode has something to do with the storyline. There are only two flashback episodes in the entire series and they happen pretty early on. Got so hooked on this I was doing over 5 episodes a day even catching them at work.

Feel like you should give it another shot cause once it gets going it keeps a great pace. I was so sad when it ended because it was the one show I looked forward to every week.

i did grow up loving watching on some of the older stuff on wdca tv20 outta DC (they showed old stuff like Starblazers, Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, Kimba..etc)

haven't seen those since then so i don't know how any of that holds up these days though,

that said, my kids when they were younger watched a lot of Anime, and i've watched a handful of those newer entries that i've really dug, (some of which you've mentioned...like the Miyazaki stuff.

a few others that jump to mind that resonated with me are...

The Girl Who Leaped Through Time
Eden Of the East
Cowboy Bebop
Dragon Ball (the original series one is the one i'm talking about)
Attack On Titan
Afro Samurai

Also, if you have a hulu.com account even a free one, both crunchroll and funimation feed their shows to hulu a week or two after premiering on their sites.

So if you want to watch a lot of the newer anime and can deal with hulu's commercials you can watch a lot of anime.

the show is ass.

For Naruto I'll say the manga, but also watch the show cause the fights are crazy when they actually get to it. especially in the later stages.

It just depends. more often than not i lean toward the show unless the show is complete trash (like one piece). music, full color and voices >>> black/white pages.

your correct some anime story lines dont follow the manga or change things because the show caught up to the manga before it was complete. A few examples..

Gantz- The anime is trash! But the manga is SOOOO good. (Though the ending and last few volumes are kinda wack)

Soul Eater - Great anime series but a lil more than midway through it diverts from the manga. The show is def worth watching, but then go back and peep the manga. It second half is much more epic compared to the show.

Any way a few of my fav mangas....

Gantz
Vagabond
The Breaker
Monster
Jackals
Vinland Saga
Code Breaker
Soul Eater

Been going since 1989 and still goin. Like Game of Thrones but more brutal featuring a villain you'll end up hating even more than the Lannisters.

The show is one of the best series of the 90s but it only covers the first 13 volumes and cuts out some characters, some of the more fantasy/occult elements, and the most violent scenes. There are 37 volumes out now. It's the only manga series I'm reading faithfully.

I liked it because it was relatively self contained and you didn't necessarily need a ton of backstory to enjoy it (you could watch Endless Waltz without seeing the series and enjoy it). Still had its preachy/pretentious moments, but highly enjoyable.
