"Fargo Season 2"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnc3tuiXoiw

Season 2 plot:

The all new “true crime” case of Fargo’s new chapter travels back to 1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota, where a young State Police Officer “Lou Solverson” (Wilson), recently back from Vietnam, investigates a case involving a local crime gang and a major Mob syndicate. Helping him piece things together is his father-in-law, “Sheriff Hank Larsson” (Danson). The investigation will lead them to a colorful cast of characters that includes “Karl Weathers” (Nick Offerman), the town lawyer of Luverne, Minnesota. A Korean War vet, Karl is a flowery drunk blessed with the gift of gab and the eloquence of a true con artist.

Three-time Emmy winner Brad Garrett will play “Joe Bulo,” the front man for the northern expansion of a Kansas City crime syndicate. The new face of corporate crime, Joe’s bringing a Walmart mentality to small town America. His number two is “Mike Milligan” (Bokeem Woodbine). Part enforcer, part detective, Mike is always smiling – but the joke is usually on you. Bulo and his crew have their sights set on the Gerhardt crime family in Fargo, currently led by matriarch “Floyd Gerhardt” (Smart).

With her husband at death’s door, Floyd takes over the family business, frustrating her eldest son, “Dodd Gerhardt” (Jeffrey Donovan). An impatient hothead with a cruel streak to match his ambitions, Dodd can’t wait for both his parents to die so he can take over and expand their business from kingdom to empire. “Bear Gerhardt” (Angus Sampson) is the middle son, an intimidatingly large man who, although inarticulate, is the most decent of his clan. “Rye Gerhardt” (Kieran Culkin), the youngest of the Gerhardt clan, views himself as a big shot, but in reality he’s just a small dog who barks big.

The first season was awesome, and there was so much potential for disaster.

Second, that seems like A LOT of characters for this season. I noticed they didn't even include Dunst and Plemons, who I thought were supposed to have central roles. However, the first season gave me faith that they'll be able to make it work.

And pretty much everything that followed. That was a GREAT episode of TV. Perfect synthesis of Coen Bros. movie and '70s film/TV show.

Too much great stuff. I'll be back in a bit.

Hawley has said that this season is going to be about the "Massacre at Sioux Falls", and not just the fake Ronald Reagan movie.

For a reminder from last season, here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3NTFnnaPC8

I'm personally wondering which of the characters this season is going to show up at Lou's home to try to kill him and his family (as mentioned in last season's finale). I figure it's either the eldest brother or Bokeem. Maybe the Native American.

Cause on paper its probably one of the worst tv show ideas ever, yet they were able to pull ten perfect episodes of television out of it. This one already seems BETTER.

Kudos all around; the first episode was one of the best movies ive seen this year, lol.

Giving the dude the typewritter treatment was great. His "stand-off" with Ted Danson was similarly great.

Pretty much everyone is killing it two episodes. Wilson, Danson, Milotti, Bokeem, Plemons, everyone.

Re: Dunst's co-worker: is it just going to turn out that she's a lesbian?

But yeah, two episodes in, and this is greatness. I loved the first season, but this season is coming stronger out the gate.

Last season was classic, but this season they seem to really be focused on the long term game. Last season was a bit more unhinged (thanks to Malvo) but the sharp focus on plot and tension makes this a more riveting watch (although last season was def. more laugh out loud funny)

in the beginning

The Gehrhardt boys walk past the twin goons, and homie flicks his cigar at them, Then passes by Bookeem, and Garrett...

You really get the sense there's long-standing bad blood, but when they get inside, oldest Gerhardt is like "who are those guys?"

Or just that opening shot, when they enter the house... the way the kids are running around, and they cut to the old man in the wheelchair

so fucking good

I don't know if I'd say I'm surprised. I figured he hasn't had a lot of opportunities to do anything really interesting at least 5 years, so he was going to make the most of his opportunity here.

I am impressed by his under-playing of the role. I think that's been the been the key to all of this season's strong performances: Bokeem, Wilson, Danson, Milotti, Plemons, etc. have done an excellent job of keeping things low key and not chewing the scenery.

>emmy?
>nah...
>but emmy?

Um, maybe? The mini-series/anthology category certainly doesn't seem as crowded as of now. I certainly don't think anyone from True Detective is going to pose a threat (I think shitting on Vince Vaughn is overblown, but Jeebus take the wheel if he wins the Emmy this year). There'll probably be some comp. from some of the actors in Show Me a Hero (most likely Molina). Who knows what American Crime Story turns into?

We mention Bokeem is in it, and he says, "Is he seriously overacting and 'saying... everything... like... this'?" And we're like, nah, he's actually doing the exact opposite and he's really fucking good.

It's going to figure into this rest of this season on some level, beyond just being briefly shown in the first episode, and further alluded to the next two subsequent episodes. The only question is how important is it going to be.

So, and I can't really believe I'm typing this, I've got a very strong suspicion that it's going to be seriously implied/suggested that at least one, maybe more, of the "bad guys" are from the flying saucer. Maybe the Kitchen Brothers. Maybe Bokeem. And whoever it turns out to be, ending up getting away.

What makes me think this is the Lou speech from Season 1 that I linked above. As in, his inability to describe what happened in 1979 as the work of anything human, but not animal either. And then him asking Malvo if he'd ever been to Sioux City.

I dunno, kind of weird hunch. But if they pull it off successfully...

.... the conversations alone are so fantastic.... It's rare you watch a show where you kinda like everybody (even Dodd to an extent) and hope they win although they're opposing factions...

...anyway, my fav parts this week were ANYTHING Lou Solverson ( his conversations with Mike and the Gerhardt family were SO on point, esp that line about dancing with the wrong girl), Typewriter guy getting in over head figuratively in every scene until it was literal, Dodd's antics, and Betty figuring out almost everything in a few hours....

In response to Reply # 51

I can kind of see where Peggy's coming from, because she's clearly stuck in a rut and just wants SOMETHING new to gravitate to. But she and Ed are just so different. Beyond what they want to get out of their current situation, they just don't have anything important in common. He wants a big family, a butcher shop and small town living, while she wants exactly none of these things. How do two people with completely different goals for what they want out of life end up married?

*Meaning in a cold open at maximum, like what they did with young Dodd this week, no more than that.

She's gets him to do all the dirty work for him, then screws him out of buying the shop. Just a rotten human being. I imagine things aren't going to end well for her either though.

Eh, Betsy figured it out pretty quickly as soon as she saw the shoe in the tree. Lou did too as soon as he saw the car in the shop. I guess you could take issue with Hanzee picking the right garage immediately, but you can imagine him looking at other garages first if needed.

>the garage scene was awesome... 2nd time someone's come out
>the bathroom to surprise an "intruder"

Yep. Definitely changed me perception of Karl as Walter Sobchak. Walter would have never been that cool under pressure.

I suppose with the episode, we saw the Otto ambush coming, but the previews last week showed that hillilly henchman getting shot up by one of the Kitchen Bros.

Also, the shot of Dodd's daughter smoking after sex made the reveal with Milligan less of a surprise.

I have no real complaints though. This show is incredible. I got fired up when she said "It's war" even though I don't think they stand much of a chance of winning.

I'm having a little trouble with Dodd's daughter's motivation. I easily get why she hates her dad. He beat her, and possibly molested her, but she doesn't seem to hate the rest of her family, and she's gotta be at least smart enough to know that she's fucking everybody.

Also, why did Hanzee let 'Thing#1" live?

Everything else... so fucking good.

Lol@ Reagan responding to Lou's Vietnam service by talking about a war movie he was in. and Lou somewhat calling Reagan on his empty rhetoric.

Glad they didn't kill the butcher shop girl.

Nice touch on Milligan feeling his boss' hair.

We'll see how long he keeps it around for good luck

I could see him leaving Kitchen bro alive to let the bosses know what happened, but he's kind of the wrong person to leave living. Those dudes were wrecking shop before Hanzee got there.

And I'm thinking it wasn't Kitchen who delivered the head. I can't see him schlepping back to Milligan with his bosses head in a gift box. I'm assuming they arrived separately.

If you recall her convo with Bokeem was about how she thought her grandmother would take the money but they would have to kill her Dad which she was good with. She was being naive and didn't realize just how real it all was. All of this is evident by the fact that she strolled over there this past ep like shit was sweet. Now she finally gets what's at play but she's way to scared of both Bokeem and her father to confess what she's done. It's still remains to be seen whether she actually continues helping Bokeem or not at this point but if she does it'll likely be out of fear.

>Also, why did Hanzee let 'Thing#1" live?

I was confused about that too but sounds like it was to deliver the box. Nobody else was left alive. He def picked the wrong dude to leave alive though.

Dodd (for what a dumbass and hothead he is) knows what being a Gerhart is about. He learned it in the movie theater. Bear knows it, it's why he wants to keep his own son away from it.

But Charlie thinks his last name alone is going to let him turn into a killer at the perfect moment and do what he's supposed to do. Because it's supposed to be a Gerhart (never mind that he doesn't know the first thing that happened to his uncle.) Simone thinks this is all a game she can play, because why not? She's watched her family do whatever they want to whoever they want as the big fish in the small pond. But she's never seen the real life consequences of her family name until now.

They're like Ed and Peggy. They're only now realizing what they've gotten in to, but it's far too late.

they inherited all of what came from their parents and grandparents paying their dues. they didn't have to put in work so they have no clue...nor should they. i think Ryan, being much younger than his brothers, also lands on this side of the fence.

it's a combination this and the generation before them not sharing the cons of that lifestyle and making it all seem gravy.

you saw this a lot on Sopranos too...think Jackie Jr. and AJ...etc.

until he started to smoke was a definite thumbs up moment.

Episode also showed how chickenshit he was in the first place. Bear was stomping a mudhole in his ass and Hanzee saves him, and then he has the nerve to start tough talking with the "Strap or buckle?" shit.

I think I was cheering for Dodd though. The whole time they were in the basement, I was thinking all they need is some Crisco and a match. That house would've been engulfed in flames in 20 minutes.

Even though Karl Weathers was the clear MVP of the episode, Hank definitely handled his business.

It's amazing that this show does everything so well. I mean, Mike Milligan recited the frickin' "Jabberwocky," which could have been so corny, but it was awesome.

I mean, dude must be a magical Native to be this on point with his investigation skills.

Bear backed down kinda weak type from the police station. I didn't buy that. Or maybe he just is a softie, but I was expecting to finally see him go wild since he has been so reserved thus far.

Bokeem is killing it. And Patrick Wilson is impressing me as well, or maybe his character is impressing me actually. He makes some sound decisions.

Best show on tv right now, no question for me.

I buy it. he doesn't seem to have much else going on besides being a good soldier.
He's got criminal experiance, war experience where he alluded to them giving him the most dangerous shit, and who knows what kind of experience from his childhood.
he doesn't seem to have any family, and Dodd is the closest thing he has to a friend. His only hobby outside of killing people and investigating shit his hunting rabbits.

I bought Bear too. Dude's a big hearted lug who will wreck shit if he has to, or when pushed. Ultimately he was looking out for Charlie's best interest tho. He's the opposite of Dodd who's pure recklessness.

I'm really digging Hanzie too. Remember how seemingly supernatural Billy Bob was in season 1? This character is kind of like that. He's the perfect killing/hunting machine. the fact that he was putting that work in during the Vietnam war pulls it all together nicely too. I have no complaints. I hope he doesn't go out like a sucker though.

Like Lou and Betsy, all he had to do was find evidence of the car crash, and everything slowly falls into place from there. And following Lou and Ed isn't a mystical feat. It's a matter of watching the back while Bear and his crew is up front, and staying quiet while they made their way through the woods. The skills he learned from being a tunnelrat in Vietnam could easily account for that.

>Bear backed down kinda weak type from the police station. I

Nah man, he was there to save his son. He specifically never wanted Charlie to have his life, so he took the steps to make sure he got the best chance to make it through his situation with as minimal of damage as possible. Getting him involved in a shootout with state police would have been the absolute opposite of that.

Tension in this show is always off the charts.

Lou vs Milligan
Floyd vs the cops
Bear vs Simone
Milligan vs Alan Arkin/the undertaker

The conversation with Betsy and Karl..

So Hank is some kind of schizophrenic? And it seems he never did go back into the house last week.

How does Meth Damon A)know who Mike Milligan is, ad B) know how to find him. This would have to be Lou right? EDIT: that can't be right either since the timeline doesn't match up with the mysterious person calling the house.

"You're a shit cop you know that"

This is as good a season of TV as there is.

Not many shows that have me glued to every word like this one does. Mrs. Solverson is such a strong character, her talk with Karl almost got me. Patrick Wilson doing great work, as of course is Bokeem. And the reveal of the Butcher of Luverne actually getting into the game was pretty cool. Can't wait for next week.

The Undertaker's reign on the show was comically short-lived. Mike not ready to give up his spot just yet. Quality all around.

They've been brought up throughout the season and Hank has obviously spent a while investigating them. Hope we find out more information on the topic without it being too out-there.

That's a good question about how Ed knew how to get in touch with Milligan, can't figure that one out but I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed when they meet up.

I'm sure we'll find out. At first i figured Lou and them set it up since their focus now would be on getting Hanzee because he just shot 2 state troopers, and they can cut a deal with Ed for his help. That could explain the call to Milligan at the hotel, but doesn't explain Ed calling the compound before (would have to be him right?) saying he knows where Dodd is. Unless Dodd gave him the number?

Meanwhile Hanzee's in pursuit. Ed Blumquest wasn't a hitman, but he certainly seems to be cut out for it. I won't be surprised if he's the one who takes out Hanzee.

he's VERY to the point while dealing with these issues....his wife hits a guy and brings the body into their garage, cool, he kills the guy (not on purpose, but uh) disposes of the body and cleans up almost ALL the evidence in the house...his wife spends the shop money on something else, ok, he starts trying to find other ways to get the money....a guy and his kid try to kill him, whatever, he kills one guy reluctantly, knocks out the kid earlier in that fight, then saves the boy that tried to kill him.... Now he's gonna try to leverage the guy that tried to kill his wife to the guys that wanna kill THAT guy to help him and his wife escape this lunacy that Rye and Kansas City started

Ed is awesome....

not the acting, but their story line

just reading your break down of why you love him so much, is WAY TOO much happenstance, because well, they're both fucn dumb and possibly touched in the head

agreed he makes quick choices, but he should be in jail or dead. the way he ran away from Lou and Hank and then beat them out the house after they packed Dodd in the trunk was a come on moment for me.

show still great though

Dude is not an especially good person, but I did feel bad for him. Even with knowing very little about his background. But I guess he just got tired of all the bullshit, and put one in Dodd's dome (a few satisfying end for that asshole). I wonder if Constance made it out of her encounter with Hanzee alive. Side note: I guess she really was just looking for a little HLA with Peggy, with the chablis and the candles and whatnot.

Obviously a great episode for Plemons and Dunst, the scene in the car where the Blumquists are completely talking past each other was phenomenal, in their own worlds. And great look into how batshit crazy Peggy really is; if Dodd wasn't the worst person in the universe, I might have also felt sort of bad for him.

And even with very little of Danson and Wilson, they managed to fucking rock ("I'm more scared of her than I am of you, so I'm calling it in.")

Terrible timing for Dodd. I think it just all came to a head for Hanzee. He went above and beyond in Vietnam where they gave him all the most dangerous tasks no one else wanted, only to come home and have so-called 'real americans' who probably didn't even serve spit in his glass of water and make fun of him. He seems to have a similar role int he Gerhardt Org, doing the most dangerous and dirtiest of dirty work, and HE know's what an asset he is to them. He goes through all this shit to find Dodd, only for Dodd to talk to him like he's half human. He was done, but I think he realized when the cops show up, his dream of giving it all up isn't realistic. Not sure what he tells Floyd when he called.

Some similarities to last week with Milligan and how he's looked at within his organization, no matter how good at his job he is.

.... Bear, his son, and Ma Gerhardt respect Hanzee and what he brings to the table.... Bear literally said so in a recent episode, but Hanzee was so used to being under Dodd's rule that he couldn't comprehend it....

I really felt bad for dude and don't think he killed Constance, cause he hasn't killed anyone that didn't threaten him or his objectives.... However, even after saying that, I can't imagine Constance really staying quiet, or Hanzee believing she would....but.. LOL at this point, he doesn't care anymore

uhmm so is Ed

he killed a dude after his stupid ass wife ran him over, instead of you know calling the cops when he was knocked out, then you know he GRINDED HIM UP INTO SHREDDED MEAT.

After that he still just wants to go on with his life buying his dumb ass shop. He ignores all the signs that his life is in danger cause he loves (or whatever that is his) wife

and then he runs away from the cops after they saved his life, twice.

he's an idiot and just as insane

watch the sexism bros

recorded the show, kinda forgot about it, and just binge watched 5 hours worth and im worn out of the sheer perfection I just saw.

Fucking hell, this show...

Kind of a lot to process here. So I'll just note the tales of awkward pissing. And the grand appearance of the flying saucer.

And I found myself happiest that Ted Danson pulled through. Though things look grim for Betsy.

And the music choices. Cymande for the win. But the cover of Credence at the end. Word to Walter Sobchak's whites.

when Lou watched Gerhardts drive by, it almost looked like they were all driving to their death. shit was pretty eerie.

Sioux falls has been referenced since last season, so it was just a matter of what few people would make it out alive. Also figured we'd see the flying saucer since it was also somewhat referenced last seaoon

so good. all of it.

every single one of the them except Bear's boy ended up dead

the UFO scene is mad interesting, because it came off tonally odd, but effective. yet is also says a lot about the realism of the core narrative of both seasons and how spec fic / sci-fi has really taken a strong stake in how we construct fiction narratives

i'm surprised no one got sucked into the air craft, but maybe that would've suspended the belief.

the shot of Lou blowing off Bear's head under the UFO light was fantastic

also it seems that for all is Hank schizo, it really was Peggy

Beyond the gist that Lou thought Schmidt was a tool.

After one of the Malvo-driven clusterfucks in Season 1 (might be after when he shot up the office by himself, might have been after the shootout in the snow, can't remember), Schmidt says, "This could Sioux Falls all over again!"

And, of course, in the midst of the Sioux Falls Massacre, Schimdt locks the door and yells, "It's just like Grand Rapids all over again!"

Wonder if we're gonna see Grand Rapids during Season 4.

"It's just a flying saucer, honey. We gotta go!"

That really sold the moment for me. I also loved presenting it as a story, which helps keep them from explaining the motives of everyone and lets you have some moments that seem like tall tales.

Once again, Fargo starts slow but builds to one of the best shows on TV. Might have to check out Hawley's novels.

Have they been setting up anything else? Will the next season be Alison Lohman's daughter and be present day? Or will we go back further?

I'd love to see Jean Smart in a Taken-type movie.

and yes i want kirsten dunst to get an emmy off this, that line was great lol

season 3 could be anything, i kinda hope they dont keep going with the solversons and have the tie be to someone else, so that show is really a collection of losely related stories, a true anthology and not some prequel-sequel basic shit

which isn't to say that the innocent won't suffer (pardon the double negative), but the bad will end up being punished for their actions.

So while Mike Milligan may love a parade, he sure as shit doesn't get one.

A lot to digest even for a mostly "quiet" episode, but it was great nonetheless. I'll be back tomorrow.

the montage of all the bodies at the start was awesome...i was worried about the last person shown during that for a second...glad it turned out the way it did.

Okay, so I realized while watching it that the two kids playing catch and signing each other while Hanzee got his new identity were the young Mr. Wrench and Mr. Numbers.

However, what I didn't realize is that the scene confirmed that Hanzee made an appearance in Season 1.

Here's the Sepinwall post revealing who he was:

http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/how-the-fargo-finale-revealed-a-hidden-secret-from-season-1

And here's an interview with Zahn McClarnon confirming it:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/fien-print/fargo-finale-zahn-mcclarnon-hanzees-848536

Pretty fricking wild.

I certainly caught the Hanzee thing. It kinda surprised me when Bear was shot in the previous episode, because I'd been expecting him to become the "head in a bag" guy.

But somehow the Wrench and Numbers thing flew right past me.

Hawley wants to shoot the show during winter, and there's not enough time to do it before this winter ends (season isn't completed yet).

He also reveals it will take place in 2010 with none of Season 1 stars having central roles.

Both needed a change from their sad lives and did so in a way that left such a wake of destruction they were never even really able to comprehend it. In the end they were too pathetic to even hate.

What a remarkable show this has been.

While I thought the first season was great, HOLY SHIT at what they pulled off here.

Easily one of the greatest seasons of the current golden tv era. There were no missteps; everyone acted their ass off, the scripting was tight, the cinematography, and they even found a way to throw a bunch of effortlessly folded in easter eggs in the end. Assured and confident filmmaking.

Once you've got character actor combination in Malvo and put him in 'Fargo' world, things write themselves.

They juggled twice as many balls this season and stuck with the landing. On top of the fact that Dunst was a stronger 'fuckup' character then lester was in the first season.

Shoot, I'd say he ended up like Marlo Stansfield. Pulling desk duty was supposed to be a reward for Milligan, not a punishment.

Milligan and Hanzee each ended up with the life the other wanted. Hanzee wanted to leave the violence behind, and Mike wanted to the sovereign king, holding court and dispensing out kindness and cruelty as he saw fit.

Works in well with the "corporate takeover of family business" theme of that plotline.

I do wonder if Hanzee ever went against KC during his rise to power, or he whether he just decided to link up with them. Kind of happy not knowing.

Crazy. though I don't think Hanzee would have wanted to sit in that office and play golf with rich white men either.

They'll never tell us and they shouldn't but it's probably a safe assumption he had to go through them.

the life Milligan got?

Hanzee said fuck white people, I am power, and went his way, which the reveal of who he was suppose to be in season 1 is wack as fuck

marlo is also a TERRIBLE comparison. he said fuck a suite and tie and went right back to the corner, which was WAY MORE soul crushing then the corny resolution for Milligan, because Marlo's made the choice that showed that the system is stronger than the individual's own will

Milligan was always an uncle tom, which made it seem odd that he was so confused by his desk job. what did he really want to keep killing?

I wish I had FX so I could watch these shows week to week to build on the suspense of having to wait for each episode.

Impressive how the show built on the first season while doing so from a totally different decade. Bokeem and the actor that played the Hankee role knocked their perspective roles out the park.

As much as the character created the circumstance he was in, I felt bad for the Ed character in the scene when he died. Shot up and bleeding out in a freezer while watching his wife completely losing her mind. Crazy way to go out.

The transition from Molly and Lou's bright future (Costco!) to Hanzee's burnt face, and Sabbath's War Pigs kicking in. How great was that shit?

Also, i had assumed Lou would get shot this episode so we would know how he got his limp. Nice touch leaving it out.
