"Ballers (Season 1)"

Anyone watch?

I thought it was pretty fun, but not really a great pilot episode. The incident that sort of sets everything into motion was handled....um, pretty oddly, to be honest.

I'm willing to see where it goes, of course. Didn't love how the Spencer character was set up at all...he goes from a guy hired for his name/connects and who is presumably not great at his job to...well, good at his job? I dunno.

Anyway...it's probably Entourage in the football world, but fuck it, it's fun.

The opening death set the tone in that it was a serious moment that was basically treated as a kind of cliche comedic beat but then turned into something serious (no will, no life insurance) which was pretty much blown off even though it was the turning point.

The topic feels like it should be more of a drama with a guy trying to save these athletes from themselves but instead it's a flashy comedy.

The Golden Boy thing felt a little odd as well since The Rock seems to have been just as bad as everyone else with his money and partying. It just came out of nowhere.

But pilot episodes are always rough and there's obviously enough material for this show; hopefully it settles down a bit. Also, they should have focused on The Rock and set up the side characters before having them make big changes like Omar Miller being lazy and without a job, the receiver messing up left and right. Felt like we jumped into things a little too quickly.

before the money. Ricky is Vince. The other characters dont fill the same roles as E or Turtle but have more "started from the bottom (retirement/new start)" type of storylines that will go along well with everyone else.

The player who got cut after banging out the hostess in the club bathroom

Solid pilot, surprised that it came from Stephen Levinson, who up to this point was known as Wahlberg's producing partner

Seems like it's going to be like Entourage but focus on the darker aspects of all of that conspicuous consumption

Which won't matter to your girl, as she'll be too busy ogling The Rock to pay attention to anything else YEAH I SAID IT

On one hand with tv so super serious, having a frivolous but funny show is always welcome.

On the other hand, it's kind of a waste of talent/budget and a solid premise when its just gonna be episodes of "everything looks bad for an episode or two, then ends up even better for everyone!".

Like I don't need for there to be life altering consequences where the Rock is doing heroin and cutting himself.

But something minor like Rob Corddry actually getting fired sticking and him finding himself in limbo, or Omar Miller not making the cut and not being able to go back to a sport he likes, etc...

The Rock is almost broke... and then they never really touch that subject again.

The Rock might have brain trauma... nope, he just has to make nice with a guy he hit.

Ricky's girl leaves him... and she's just gone. Who cares?

Vernon's friend is a problem, oh wait, he's not. They got a huge deal.

The wife doesn't seem to care about Charles getting back onto the field and into the NFL lifestyle. Charles doesn't really seem to weigh the costs either.

The opening scene kind of set up the weird approach - dude gets killed and it's kind of nothing. It's not a black comedy, it's not a moment of realization, it just kind of happened. It should have been an inciting incident but you could cut it from the show and nothing would change.

Entourage worked best when it was superficial and comedic. Ballers simply wasn't funny. It was Entourage with no Ari, Busey, or even a Shauna. It was almost like Suits if they cut out all of the legal drama.
They have such a rich subject matter and they managed to be neither interesting nor amusing. Which, I guess, shouldn't be surprising since they opted to go with the lead as not an athlete nor an agent but as a financial manager (who doesn't seem to actually do much financial managing.) The fact that Marvin on Entourage is more entertaining than anyone on Ballers speaks volumes.

First off, it finally dawned on me that the same guy playing the agent (Troy Garrity) was the same dude from the Barbershop movies. Granted, those were a while back, and actors aren't usually the personas they play, but the juxtaposition was interesting

Now, as far as the show goes, I only really cared about what happened with Spencer, and that's due more to the fact that it's The Rock and we like The Rock so we'll follow him wherever he goes. And I admit to a personal investment in the "The Rock 'gaslighted' ol' girl even though it turns out he really didn't" storyline, in part because there was an arc there with real stakes for people which led to that moment in the bar, which to me was probably the best scene of the season.

Everybody else turned out to be annoying as fuck, except for the aforementioned agent. No real character depth for anyone save Spencer and the agent, and that's a problem.

And yeah, I know, "but it's kinda like Entourage but in Miami!" but even that's kinda nebulous, because you remember the sense of fun that the guys on Entourage seemed to be having on a per-episode basis? I didn't really feel any of that here.

The writing and the characters need to be sharper and a little bit deeper in season 2, period point blank.

Also, the less The Rock ass on TV, the better YEAH I SAID IT.
