"Mr. Robot (USA, Season 1)"

Premieres June 24

MR. ROBOT is a psychological thriller that follows Elliot (Rami Malek, “24”), a young programmer, who works as a cyber security engineer by day and a vigilante hacker by night. Elliot finds himself at a crossroads when the mysterious leader (Christian Slater, “The Adderall Diaries”) of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the corporation he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. The series also stars Portia Doubleday (“Her”), Carly Chaikin (“Suburgatory”) and Martin Wallström (“Simple Simon”).

they were showing this before the previews at the Avengers. It's funny because I just watched The Pacific last week for the first time in a couple of years. I was telling my wife while we watched it how like Band of Brothers I am starting to see these guys pop up in roles all over the place. Im in just because of him.

‘Mr. Robot’ Gets Second Season Pickup By USA Ahead Of Series Premiere
by Nellie Andreeva
June 24, 2015 2:30pm

USA Network is giving a major vote of confidence to its new series Mr. Robot. Hours before the hacking drama premieres tonight, the network has renewed it for a second season of at least 10 episodes.

USA has made the renewal after 2.6 million people had sampled the pilot, put up online on various platforms on May 27. The pilot also has been generally well received, winning the audience award at South By Southwest and named an official selection of the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.

“We knew from the moment we read Sam Esmail’s provocative script, and witnessed the brilliant performances of Rami Malek and Christian Slater, that Mr. Robot is a stand-out series that is unlike anything currently on television,” said USA Network President Chris McCumber. “The overwhelmingly positive fan reactions to the pilot and the broad sampling of it, reaffirms our confidence in the series, and we’re excited to see where this timely drama will take us for season two.”

Mr. Robot, part of USA’s push into edgier, younger-skewing programming, follows Elliot (Malek), a young programmer who works as a cyber-security engineer by day and as a vigilante hacker by night. Elliot finds himself at a crossroads when the mysterious leader (Slater) of an underground hacker group recruits him to destroy the firm he is paid to protect. Compelled by his personal beliefs, Elliot struggles to resist the chance to take down the multinational CEOs he believes are running (and ruining) the world. Co-starring are Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin and Martin Wallström.

From Universal Cable Productions, Mr. Robot is from writer and executive producer Sam Esmail and executive producers Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Chad Hamilton.

Mr. Robot is the second new USA series to premiere this summer, following last week’s debut of drama Complications which has logged 2.8 million viewers in Live+3.

speculation is that some of this shit isn't really happening
i'm guessing the men in black arent really there
because why would the pretty one refer to his own company by the evil corp nickname in the meeting
and maybe christian slater isn't real either
but elliots boss did watch that threat video with him, so obviously he can see him
if that was him behind the mask

like ok, the 'is it all real or is he/she dreaming bits n pieces of it or hallucinating' thing has been done before. but in this show, it could ALL be really happening. there's plausibility for all of it (within the show's universe anyways). outside of a few of Elliot's inner-thoughts bleeding over into reality (him hearing "Evil Corp" all the time), the events themselves could all be really happening. Mr Robot could be Elliot's invention, but then he would've had to create an entire lab full of hackers to populate that scenario as well. i think his drugged state of mind is what we're seeing, mostly.

besides, it's clear we're going through this ride exclusively through Elliot's eyes (thus, the Dexter-esque narration). so ultimately it could go either way.

In response to Reply # 0

Mr. Robot Is Tyler Durden
Posted on July 4, 2015 by societeanonymeinc

I am really enjoying the new USA show, Mr. Robot.

Somehow Rami Malek renders disturbed, anti-social misfit Elliot Alderson a sympathetic everyman, the extreme embodiment of the alienation many of us feel at those times we are treated more like numbers than people.

At first, I was kind of put off by Christian Slater’s in-your-face portrayal of the title character. He seemed out of sync with the overall tone of the largely muted show. He was too, well, Christian Slater.

BIG SPOILER ALERT

But that all changed when I realized that Mr. Robot is Tyler Durden. Mr. Robot is Elliot’s unconscious projection, just as Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden was the leader Edward Norton’s narrator wished he were in Fight Club.

Not convinced?

The show starts with Elliot saying: “Hello, friend.”

It’s natural to think he is speaking directly to us, the viewers, as is the convention of film voice-overs, but he continues . . .

“Hello, friend? That’s lame. Maybe I should give you a name, but that’s a slippery slope. You’re only in my head. We have to remember that. Shit! It’s actually happened, I’m talking to an imaginary person.”

So Elliot immediately reveals himself as an unreliable narrator. Everything shown from his perspective must be questioned. Everything requires corroboration from other interior sources.

Our first glimpse of Mr. Robot is when he shouts across a crowded subway car to Elliot: “Hey. Hey, you. Hey, kiddo, what’s happening? Exciting time in the world right now. Exciting time.” No one else in the subway car reacts at all. Sure, New Yorker disinterest, especially on public transport, is legendary, but this is taking it to an extreme.

Mr. Robot later tries to panhandle two men in black who seem to be watching Elliot — “What about you two? Hunh? You guys got any spare change? Help me out? New York’s expensive, guys, c’mon” — but they do not acknowledge him at all; and even Elliot questions whether all of the men in black he sees following him are real.

When Elliot and Mr. Robot have their first one-on-one conversation, they are all alone in a subway car in the middle of the night. Elliot’s asks, “Are you talking to me?” Most film fans will immediately associate this line with the paranoid classic, Taxi Driver. An armed Travis Bickle is looking in the mirror when he says this. The next line is: “Well, I’m the only one here.”

Mr. Robot takes Elliot to the hackers’ arcade lair. When Romero opens door, he looks directly at Elliot, but does not even glance at Mr. Robot. No one else looks directly at him, but they all turn to look at Elliot at some point.

After Elliot has left the arcade, he worries:

“I’m crazy. I have to be crazy because that didn’t just happen, right? This is a delusion. Is this a delusion? Shit, I’m schizo.

“Have I really lost it this time? No, no, Last night happened. It was real. . . .

“I know, I know, I know, I realize I’m saying all of this to an imaginary person, but I created you. I didn’t create this.”

Or did he?

When Elliot later returns to the arcade to confront Mr. Robot, he greets Darlene by saying, “Hey, man. Where’s your boss?” She replies, “Okay, cut the bullshit. When are you going to give us access . . .”

As they speak, Mr. Robot slowly walks up in the background, crossing the frame similar to the way Harry Lime (Orson Welles) entered an amusement park in Vienna to meet Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) in another paranoid classic, The Third Man (a restoration of which just so happens to be having a limited run in select theaters right now). She does not seem to notice “her boss” at all. And he does not fully enter the shot and speak to Elliot until Darlene has left.

The two are then alone on the Ferris Wheel in a scene straight out of The Third Man, where Lime/Mr. Robot explains to Martins/Elliot exactly how the world works:

There is more evidence for my theory in Episode 2, excuse me, Episode 1.1. When Elliot comes home to find Darlene in his shower, she says, “You were supposed to come last night. Did you forget?” But he has no idea what she is talking about, “Come? Where?”

And then there is this exchange:

“How do you know where I live?”

“Why wouldn’t I know where you live?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know where you live.”

“I don’t live anywhere at the present. . . .”*

This is followed by what an asshole her boyfriend is for proposing to her, which she ends by saying. “I’ll do my disappearing act. He’ll come to his senses. You know, it’s our thing.”

“Our,” as in her and her boyfriend or her and Elliot/Mr. Robot? Both? This whole interchange really reminds me of the scene in Fight Club when Marla walks into the kitchen after a night spent with Tyler.

When they reach the arcade, all of the hackers clap for Elliot’s takedown of Evil Corp’s Colby. This is interrupted by the sound of a gunshot. Elliot turns to see Mr. Robot shooting ducks on an arcade game. No one else seems to notice. Then Darlene, speaking to Elliot, asks: “Can we please hear the plan?” Mr. Robot steps directly in front of Elliot to rebuff further questions. Darlene’s focus does not change.

Afterward, Elliot and Mr. Robot walk off on their own to discuss the plan, ending with Elliot asking:

“They know about all of this?”

“You’re the first.”

Mr. Robot then launches into his “Are you a one or a zero?” speech, referring several times to Elliot’s father. But wait, Elliot has never mentioned his father to Mr. Robot. We only know about it from Elliot’s confrontation with Ron at the beginning of the show. Sure, these are hackers, so they could find out public information like the cause of Elliot’s father’s death, but Mr. Robot knows details about Elliot’s personal feelings.

When Elliot leaves the arcade, Darlene confronts him about the plan, “Disappearing again? . . . You don’t get to disappear from this. We can do it with or without you, but you’re part of this either way! Yeah, even your stupid hoodie can’t protect you, bitch!”

When Elliot later returns to Coney Island, he finds Mr. Robot sitting alone on a rail reading a romance novel: “Deep passions, longing. The two of them had never felt such a love, such a closeness, such a connection.” Could this be an allusion to the close connection between Elliot and Mr. Robot?

When I presented this theory to my friend Tim, he said I made a convincing case, but he’ll be disappointed if I am right because then the show would be nothing but a ripoff of Fight Club. Me, I actually find the prospect reassuring, as it would anchor Christian Slater’s acting, give a context for why it was so out of sync with the rest of the show. Mr. Robot is Elliot’s unconscious projection of everything he feels he lacks, just as Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden was the leader Edward Norton’s narrator wished he could be in Fight Club. As such, of course, he has a far more outgoing personality. It also explains why Christian Slater is saddled with so many speeches and so much narrative explication. He is not explaining himself to us, the viewers, but to Elliot, his other self, the self that can actually carry out his plans. Mr. Robot is the id that comes up with extreme plans and does not worry about how much collateral damage might be caused by blowing up a gas processing plant to take out a computer server farm. Eliot is the ego tasked with keeping the id in check, coming up with less destructive (to people, not credit institutions) means to accomplish the goal and putting those revised plans in action.

* Shit, could Darlene also be a delusion? While she shares a scene with Elliot’s drug dealer, Shayla, they never interact. But that would mean the entire hacker crew would need to be in Elliot’s mind, which would be way over the line. Maybe it’s best to take Mr. Robot’s advice in terms of Darlene: “Let’s not focus on her, that’d be like entering a bad K-hole that you’ll never wake up from.” But I may have already entered that K-hole if I’m taking advice from a delusion about other possible delusions.

So they've made it clear that everybody else is real...but C. Slater def isn't. I read an article (posted above) that eluded to the fact that the girl could be imaginary too but after this ep we know that not to be true.

Question is, who texted him at the party? Who leaked the emails? I'm guessing that is what homegirl wanted to talk to him about but still...would she put it out there without informing him first? I guess she tried to.

The scene at the end was dope.

man, I really thought they telegraphed the Christian Slater character
to be a Tyler Durden clone this episode.

at the bar, the 2 apple martini's - only 12 bucks instead of 24
if a second person there.

was a few other glaring things I noticed when watching, would have
to catch a 2nd viewing to point them out.

If I catch it again, I'll come back.

i found myself carefully scrutinising ALL of Elliot's interactions with ppl. that last ep at least proved Darlene was real after Shayla acknowledged her existence. but no one pays attention to Mr. Robot, no one has a direct conversation with him, and his comment about E being "the first" person to know about the overall plan (when it would make more sense that the rest of the group should already know the plan if E's an actual newcomer). it's all adds up. still cool as shit tho lol.

i'm a big Slater fan from childhood tho so there's that too.

Does it not give the show a much more limited shelf life if Mr Robot isn't real? Surely we're only a few episodes away from it being revealed, otherwise it would be stupid - they can't make it any sort of big reveal at season's end if the whole internet is aware of it by episode 3. And the show would have to completely switch tact if he doesn't exist in a few eps time and Elliot is now the mastermind.

I dunno, maybe I'm just hoping they've got something up their sleeve that hasn't already been predicted already.

Mr. Robot being a manifestation of Elliot's subconscious should end up being the least important aspect i rekn. significant for sure, but thematically it goes beyond just Elliot's intricacies. the larger scope topics it's gonna touch will end up outweighing the revelation of an imaginary friend, cos in the end all Mr. Robot is there to do is act as the catalysing agent cos E can't just go ahead and do it himself.

we got surprise buttsekz and preggo bdsm, and i dont have a problem with any of those things, but...can't they lift the whole swearing thing? they let Elliot say "fuck" in the pilot but all other fucks have been muted. sup with that? similar situation with Breaking Bad if i recall (i'm in Aus so i lose track of which cable companies can say and do what and the reasons for it).

In response to Reply # 42

Broadcast (over the air) networks can't have swear words (except in very special exceptions that are considered for the good of the public; e.g., showing Saving Private Ryan unedited on Memorial Day). These networks broadcast over publicly-owned airwaves, so the Federal Communication Commission has jurisdiction over their content. There are, however "Safe Harbor" hours, I think after 11pm, during which the standards are relaxed.

Cable channels (including USA and AMC) can technically broadcast whatever they want. HBO has nudity, and Comedy Central doesn't censor movies late at night sometimes. The only reason they have this self-imposed F-word policy is so that people don't start tuning out and losing them advertising money.

this last ep they said "fuck" at least 4 times that i remember. they're quite clearly saying it. muting em is pointless cos we're already saying it in our minds to fill in the audiogaps. meanwhile everyone's comfy broadcasting the sex and the violence, but have to limit their usage of "fuck"? always struck me as being weird as...(wait for it)...fuck.

clever how Elliot's mindtrip to that drug den was the one and only time someone else actually looked at and spoke to Mr. Robot. i was tricked for a second into thinking he's been REAL this whole time lol. then nah. still on Durden status. but what a nice mindfuck regardless.

i got more to say but this shit is the #1 thing i look forward to every week now. hands down best shit on right now.

And yeah, other than the drug den, they seemed to make it VERY obvious Mr Robot isn't real in this ep. I'd be surprised if we go more than another two episodes without it being explicitly revealed.

i think sumone mentioned it earlier in the post, that Elliot's narration from the very beginning isn't for the audience, but an internal acknowledgement that he's made a mental break and fabricated Mr. Robot himself. which is more cool trickery to blur the lines a bit.

half the show looks like it's Elliot coming to terms within his own self that he and Mr. Robot are the same. the narration is the part of him that knows, maybe his subconscious? which then manifests as Mr. Robot. if ur looking at it from a simple Jungian POV (and im paraphrasing here), anything you repress will eventually be expressed, or manifest, as fate. so you repress the Mr. Robot part of yourself, at some point that part will be physically expressed in your conscious life. but Elliot's manifested as a fully-formed Christian Slater.

i need to re-read my Jung books, should provide some more interesting context to Elliot's condition (none of which i see as a psychotic break, just a mental one, cos he's the kinda dude who sees the levels of bullshit that run the world, and his only recourse is to react in this fashion: aka, some ppl we might label crazy or anti-social are just having a schizoid reaction to a corrupt, fucked up and morally bankrupt society).

and there might have been a moment in the beginning of the episode where darlene looked at him when he said something.
i'm not saying he's real, but it looks like they're gonna start blurring the lines a little bit
which i'm hoping for because i personally think it would suck if the big twist is as simple as mr. robot isn't real
which pretty much everyone has been saying since episode 1.

...in terms of how much of Mr. Robot Elliot has been manifesting. cos if we're goin by Durden logic, he can still technically communicate to other ppl AS Mr. Robot, while still believing dude is a completely separate entity. that's probs blurry enough. and if anyone responds to a Mr. Robot comment, it's just Elliot speaking through his manifestation. i've noticed at least a few times when ppl are looking at Mr. Robot or seemingly responding to his comments, Elliot and Mr. Robot are usually standing in the same or similar spots (one in front and one behind, or at similar eye levels).

he sees him and communicates to him but as far as other people go, they're just talking to Elliot. The camera angles and editing done in a clever way for the viewer but the characters are always looking at and talking directly to Elliot. Nobody ever acknowledges Mr. Robot (except for the morphine withdrawal dream).

They really flipped it that episode. Darelene was talking directly to Mr Robot for a whole scene, and he wasn't able to hear him once he went out of range from whatever they were communicating with at Steel Mountain. It just became a whole lot harder to explain if they're going the Fight Club route. Which is strange, because the past few episodes made it seem inevitable.

its just too predictable given how close this show is to fight club
and for it to be as simple as that this early in the shows run, how much farther could they go with it?
it still could be that mr robot is elliot and they switch places
but i'm hoping its something none of us see coming.

For Tyrell's Patrick Bateman moment. every time he's on screen, dude dials in the tension and things are not going his way. He's about to go postal. Him and his wife are my favorite characters on the show. It's also very strange that they speak to each other in 2 different languages.Ex is Danish. Can't fool me on that.

to have him just kill her? Made no sense to me. Shouldn't be any problem connecting him to the murder. Then again, they didn't connect Elliot to Shayla's body in a car he was riding in all day with his fingerprints presumably all over the place.

I've been having a lot of trouble with this show because I've found myself struggling to give a shit about any of the characters. That last scene this week really for the first time made me empathetic towards Elliot - but with his personality I'm not sure how long that is going to last... it seems to be quite fleeting for me.

Also, after whining for a lifetime about the way Hollywood downright insists on getting technology wrong, I've been surprised by how annoyed I am by this crew getting it so blatantly in-our-faces correct. Those close up shots of terminal windows and irc clients, the quickfire exchanges between members of the clique stuffed with jargon that will only register to a small subset of the audience - it's almost absurd. But I suppose the writers deserve a shitload of credit for managing to pull it off in a way that leaves the viewer feeling like they more or less get the meaning of the conversation just witnessed.

This episode shocked me so much I dreamt about the shit. LOL
Elliott got effed royally. When he opened that trunk...It was drum roll as a mug! But I started thinking if she was in the trunk all day, if she was alive they would have heard her.Why they had to kill Isaac like that though? Why you do your dirty by your lonely.Vera was playing chess all along. I demand revenge and a satisfying one. Mr Robot was right. Winning would have been scarifying ol' girl.Whatever winning is in this case. Is he going back to drugs after this?

especially loved the dialogue b/w Angela and Colby. seemed to be a poignancy to it (even with the jarring "put my balls in your mouth" line). it's like Angela was repping the regular folk and what the convo would be like if they/we got a chance to emotionally expose a 1%er, and get to the heart of the problem of why unnecessary deaths like that happen. was a nice flipside to the 'everyone's just evil' thing. i think the point of that was to show that a GROUP of men can justify any action or inaction, whereas on an individual level they'd actually pause before flippantly deciding whether or not someone lives or dies. same sorta thing i noticed growing up whenever i would talk to ppl in high school who weren't part of my friends circle. you encounter them in their respective group and they're this heightened borderline offensive version of themselves. catch em on a 1-on-1 basis? completely rational, normal and understandable human beings.

so i guess we should completely abandon the Durden theory then? Mr Robot's havin all sortsa solitary convos with ppl now.

and how the fuck is Tyrell gonna off that chick and get away with it?? lol. can't wait to see how that pans out. and his rapid descent into pure madness.

i'm happy to throw it completely out the window now (although the projection idea still works in favour of the Durden factor). it's better that not be the focus of the show anyways. but testament to the quality of the acting, writing, directing, music, the pretty much everything, that even if that was still a big reveal, it'd pale in comparison to all the other crazy shit that's happened already.

Every character's got to show their human side...Or lack thereof...
Every scene was written with a gravity that can't be ignored. Every word is tonally designed to keep our interest.

-The theory that MR Robot is not real got a big blow on this one from the opening scene in the bar with Darlene.

- That Shayla flashback got me confused at first. The whole Shayla thing is so messed up. As much as I like Vera, I need revenge. To be honest I'm still not sure who killed Shayla, was it Vera and the Black dude or was it Isaac?

-Mr Robot and Romero got real intense. When you pull a gun on a homie you better use it or he'll get back to you.Mr Robot got real emotional there for a second. Like a scorned boyfriend who can't let go. I love how Romero speaks, Black Californian stoner.

- My favorite scene of the episode Elliot and the shrink lady... Peeling her life away on some killing me softly Steeze. Seems therapeutic as a mug.Even enumerating her preferences on what she likes to watch on them smut websites. He might never need therapy again and she might need it more than he does after that. But really it seems like it was as liberating for him as it was for her. I'm very interested in the result of that reveal.

-Tyrell looks like Chucky. I love how they film those execs the camera is always showing them from a lower angle makes them look more arrogant.Forces us to despise them.He fired them for no reason and there's no way we could feel for them LOL...
Does Tyrell have to choke a Bi$^h ? Yeah apparently he did. I knew he'd do something shady but damn, that scene was uncomfortable to watch. He was at it a while. How shaken he was after he was done made it even more troubling for me. I'm used to the maniacal laugh after the bad guy offs someone that was just talking shit a minute ago. There's nothing darker than a bad guy with rationale. The next episode gonna be must see TV on that scene alone.

-Angela and colby. So you allowed to say all that on basic cable but you can't say FCUK? Another scene that was carefully written and calculated to emphasize the frame of mind of the characters. Shot beautifully too. This is the first time I enjoyed Angela as a character. I thought she was the the weakest part of the show until this episode. Even the part when she screws her ex with the disc, I think lacked accent as to explain her motivation.

This episode was 44 minutes too short.

I'm curious about Elliot's relationship with her shrink too...I wonder if the reveal brings them closer together or if it just completely freaks her out and she shuts down.

The jokes they were making about women and gay guys sleeping their way to the top cut close the bone. He took offense because he slept with that dude to get intel on the incoming CTO. He just told them he fired them for no reason.

This shit just turned way the fuck up. I've spent a lot of time reading various forums in between eps and didn't see anyone predict that.

But honestly, the craziest part of that ep: the shot of that fork Tyrell's wife used on herself, sitting there bloody on the kitchen top. Damn.

that was a nice Alderson family reunion lol.
sooooo.....ok. fuck.
i have nothing to add.
ep knocked it out the park once again.
none of this is predictable.

just to get this straight, was it clear that M.R. is a figment and Elliot used the image of his father to create him via self-trickery? or is that actually his pops and Elliot didn't suss it cos he'd blocked it (and his sister) out?

When he was talking to Tyrell in the car, when Elliot was at work dealing with all that other shit (if I have my timeline correct) - it all seems a little much to be saying Elliot is somehow Fight Clubbing all of that.

If Mr. Robot is supposed to be imaginary, they're "cheating" us. Cause, dude was supposed to be at work when that meeting went down. Plus Tyrell talked to R like they made a plan months ago and that contradicts the scene where Tyrell tried to hire Elliott.

when Tyrell was threatening Mr. Robot about his "dirty little secret," I just took that as him knowing that Elliot set Colby up, nothing more.

I still think Elliot is Mr. Robot.

Every episode of this show takes it in the Breaking Bad realm of epic TV.You can't watch this show without going Woah! The tone gets so dark though.Darlene and Angela getting all chummy got me real confused.I thought I missed an episode... The family plot connected the dots, and still...There is no way his dad is alive...Tyrell's wife is Real G of the week. Also Faraday Cage scene was awesome, just like Elliot I wanted more time with Whiterose.

The
>tone gets so dark though.Darlene and Angela getting all chummy
>got me real confused.I thought I missed an episode...

I was like, "Since when do they know each other?" Then they were talking about Elliot like they had a shared relationship with him. Once he tried to kiss Darlene, that's when I FINALLY figure it out. But I still wasn't sure about Mr. Robot though. Him knocking at the door, that HAS to be his father being alive and not Elliot projecting again.

So many things tossed that theory out the window for me at this point...I was convinced at first too but now it seems obvious that he's really alive...somehow he survived the cancer. Will be interested to find out how.

make us think this is how it is, only to flip it entirely, cos we have a fairly unreliable narrator/pov.

but then i read the av club review and it reminded me of elliot's line "you knew all along, didn't you?"
and i had to admit, that shit was kinda nicely done.
that with the pulp fiction nod in the paper at the beginning
and eliot later saying "i'm pretty fucking far from ok"
it was tight
i still didn't want it to be so on the nose with the fight club shit
but the finale could redeem it in my eyes

I don't think it's a coincidence that this episode ended with Eliot by the popcorn maker where Darlene stashed the gun. I'm thinking Wellick gets in a murderous rage and she ends him. With him unemployed, estranged from his family and the prime suspect for murder, there doesn't seem to be much of a future for him.

Agree? Disagree?

I feel like we don't know enough about him yet to kill him off, unless his wife sort of takes his place as the key antagonist. But who knows, I was convinced Mr Robot was real after Ep 8.

they fucked with us pretty convincingly with the is he real or not real thing, maybe someone gets shot, but doesn't die? doesn't necessarily have be the whole Chekhov's gun factor. i could just as easily believe they're introducing a semi-obvious narrative trope only not to use it in the way we expect...

...then again, they could make us think that and in the end follow through with it anyways. point is, i can't tell what's going to happen and i fucking love it. guessing the outcome due to heavily-telegraphed choices by characters was what ruined the True Detective finale for me. this show though? i await the unexpected.

This episode had less shockers as things unraveled. I'm happy that Mr.Robot wasn't real. Christian Slater is an underrated actor. He should be more successful than basic cable TV( Then again Bryan Cranston... There's still hope, I guess). I hope we'll see him again in the show.My girl did not know about him so we watched True Romance last night.

Tyrell's wife; what happened to "I won't let you leave us"? now it's " You're not the man I want to be with". Playin' with ol' boy emotions. I mean it's not like he already choked a bit$#.

I wish we didget to see dude whom's wife he murked. Hearing about how he was blaming Tyrell would have made for some interesting angry revenge drama ( like there wasn't enough of it on this show)

Angela finally serves her purpose. There are no emotions in business. She gets shut down by her lawyer to get offered a job by the guy she's suing LOL

The fire at Whitehorse's joint... Who? What? Why? I didn't quite get all that but I guess it's Steel Mountain covering their tracks? But why was Gideon the one picking the hard drive up when Ollie was setup to get Eliott to bring them there? It probably ain't that deep but that scene had details that seem important for some reason.

Now I get to be scared for Darlene. Elliot's anxiety on why he couldn't see Darlene was worrying.

a long week to the finale...

In response to Reply # 115

pretty sure she'll end up taking the gig.
totally reminds me of the "Angel" season 4 finale (randomly enuf, the AV Club review said the same). the whole fighting the devil/demons/the system from within the belly of the beast thing (to which Angel's immortal reply was: "the beast's belly? doesn't that usually mean you've been eaten?" (thats my fav show of all-time, thus i can recall quotes like a muhfucka).
i think the show made it seem like she'll have the most traction in getting some real changes made to Evil Corp's reach and influence, but as Colby so succinctly points out, no one gives a shit. things will blow up momentarily, only to reform itself so the gears of humanity's suffering can keep being greased, so for every Angela that hurls itself at that system, there's a bottomless pit of money and power to eventually bury it and her. toying with those possibilities and grey areas is gonna be great viewing.
but i think ultimately, the power will rest with Elliot. Vera recognised it to the point where he was practically in awe of it, and Tyrell does too. without Elliot, Vera would still be locked up, and Tyrell would have no clue how to get revenge against his former employers. Elliot's the true vehicle for change, even if he is a highly delusional functioning drug addict.

And one additional but very important note: Next week, there will be an important scene that occurs after the credits of the season finale. (Think Marvel Studios.) I’m told that this extra bit is something fans will definitely want to see…

From reddit the translation of what Joanna said to Elliot in Danish:

"Hvis du har gjort ham noget, så slår jeg dig ihjel."

So Elliot will be even crazier I guess...he's going full on Durden. What about Angela with E-Corp...does she basically turn into the enemy? She seemed to be drinking the Kool-aid for a bit until the very end there when old dude showed his true crazy. And where da hell is Tyrell?

In the post-credit scene, that was Whiterose, right?
What's going on there? Is he/she playing both sides?

should be interesting.

i'm also thinking that's who the Evil Corp boss (forget his name) was referring to when he said he knew who was behind it.

Overall, I'm happy.
The show is all about intrigue and doubts, I knew they were not gonna answer anything we didn't already know.

I love how this show enjoys disorienting us. With one week off the air, I was confused as to why he was in the back of Tyrell's car...Then you find he's been there for while and he has no idea how... Makes you feel like you might have missed something from the last episode but they did connect the dots.

Lotsa great scenes in this one. Very beautifully shot too.

Joanna with her mermaid-like face. Too pretty to be trusted kinda face... Playing chess with Elliot. Elliot recognizing it. Great scene with a lot of subtleties and tension bubbling all over the place.

Angela at E Corps and "The scene". Yeah they did well delaying the finale because of that scene. Even with the way it was edited, it was disturbing to watch, and the blood on her shoes is enough to suggest the bloodbath she witnessed. I love how you can see the Evil Corp rubbing in at the shoe store. Dude was outta line. I can't tell yet if she is drinking the Kool Aid or blending in to dismantle it from within. The Boos looks taken in by her. O the possibilities!

The scene with Krista and the douchebag ex made me laugh out loud. Most shows would have her fall back being used but she brained up. Good for her. I wonder if she'll have a part in season 2

The post credit scene was the cherry on the cake. Whiterose in costume? Hangin' out with Evil Corps boss being all chummy makes me wonder what is afoot , someone is fooling somebody.

It'll be worth the wait.

I've noticed nods to Tron, Rubicon, Requiem for a Dream, Eyes Wide Shut, A Clockwork Orange, Network, American Psycho, V for Vendetta, and of course, Fight Club. There's been others for sure, but I haven't been able to put my finger on exactly what they were.

edit: Just read someone on Reddit saying BD Wong is pretty similar to Job from Banshee, and Sam Esmail himself said he's a fan, so there's that one, too.

DAMN i loved this show.

now i want to re-watch to see what clues i missed. and i need to re-watch the finale b/c i was nodding off - it was late but after seeing episode 9 i couldn't go to sleep w/o seeing the last episode. and by the end it was like 1 AM. i just read in here that there was a scene after the final credits - i didn't see that at all. LOL

awesome show. i figured there's no way there could be another season but apparently there will be. i'm in. lol

I love all the meta self-awareness of the show. It takes familiar tropes and references then turns them on their head (part of the reason movies like Scream, Cabin in the Woods and Tucker and Dale vs Evil are so fun).

People saw the Tyler Durden twist coming a mile away but the fact that he was his dad made it feel fresh. I also loved how they handled his relationship with Shayla. Instead of telegraphing her death with the flashback of their first encounter, they started the next episode with it, letting the fans "mourn" first before memorializing her.

As an aside, for any MBTI heads, Elliot is maybe the purest representation of an INTP I've seen on TV or film. The persistent internal monologue, indifference towards appearance, "daydreaming" while other people are talking to him are quintessential INTP traits. It's not just the obvious ones though, they nailed all the little things too. Scattered eye contact, lack of emotion (except in huge bursts), the social awkwardness, and especially the intense loyalty to those he cares about. INTP's tend to be hyper self-aware of their social interactions and because of this they genuinely appreciate when acquaintances show small kindnesses towards them (e.g., Gideon when he came out as gay to him or Krista as his psychiatrist).

There are other prominent fictional INTP's like Abed from Community or Rustin Cohle from True Detective but none have nailed every aspect of an INTP as accurately as Elliot Alderson.

Can't wait to start season 2.

This show is really, really good. Yeah, some of it telegraphed early, but they made us think it was too easy, then came back with yeah, you were right all along. Still the characters and performances, story, so well done.
