"Letterman's retirement"

I'm genuinely getting sad.

What's been your favorite Letterman sketch/bit/moment?

I'll never forget Tom Hank's Slappy White impression and Dave's reaction:

while Dave was in a van with a walkie talking telling him how to annoy people. But I think he almost got stabbed once so they had to put an end to that.

I used to stay up late cause they used to show kung fu movies after Letterman went off (east coast, so that was like 1:30am). Whenever I'd hear that song start up I'd just crack up laughing

It's been nice that they've been showing the classic old bits each night...

I never stop laughing at taco bell and mcdonalds.

Everything with Rupert was amazing, as previously mentioned.

this was a great piece speaking to the influence he's had on the form:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/13/arts/television/david-letterman-leaves-his-successors-a-rich-comedic-bequest.html

also, love this photo of him.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/03/arts/television/david-letterman-reflects-on-33-years-in-late-night-television.html#slideshow/100000003654270/100000003654276
he's got stacks of paper cups indicating the number of completed shows and they cover half of his dressing room mirror? That's fucking perfect...

these are still quite gut-bustingly hilarious:

Dave gets called a bitch.
Dave gets slipped a mickey.
Dave gets called Jessica Tandy. TWICE.

and u know that thing Dave does when he genuinely thinks a guest is hilarious and he giggles like a kid? he pretty much does that constantly through most of these segments lol. it's def one of the more recent bits but holy shit it's up there with my favs.

I guess Carson's finale was also basically a clip show.

They picked great clips. That Taco Bell bit is one of the things that immediately comes to mind when I try to think of the funniest segments on the show.

I had forgotten about those segments with kids, but they were great.

Touching to see Regina and Harry in the audience. Harry looked so annoyed at dad pointing a camera at him.

The top ten list was fun. The Julia Louis-Dreyfus one will be the clip everyone plays, I guess.

The behind the scenes video was amazing. I've watched this show for a quarter of a century, and never had a good idea of the process behind it.

Seemed odd to see the Foo Fighters as the last musical act, especially after a name as big as Bob Dylan last night. But I'd forgotten the story about the heart surgery and the first show back.

Really satisfying sendoff. I shouldn't be okay with this show coming to an end. But they made it feel right.

Yeah, I knew he was a fan (and I've got nothing against them, of course). Just surprised me that they'd be the only "proper" guest on the final show, until he reminded us of that history.

it was beyond perfect that they saved taco bell for last. That is a hall of fame segment.

Loved the Dave with kids segment too - that was something I really could have forgotten about in all of this appreciation/nostalgia. "Why don't you hold it since you are already there" and the kid shrugging and having no answer to the question... wonderful.

That day in the life thing was pure joy. Imagine challenging Dave to a contest to determine who is better at shooting grapes.

What a closing montage too... So much stuff to look up and rewatch, for years and years to come.
