Dragon Ball Super, a brand new television anime inspired by Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga, will premiere on Fuji TV and other channels in July on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. This will be the first new Dragon Ball television series since Dragon Ball GT, which aired from 1996 to 1997.

The story of the anime is set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu, when the Earth has become peaceful once again. The voice of Goku, Gohan, and Goten, Masako Nozawa commented on the new anime, saying, “We've always used the word 'chō' (Super) with Dragon Ball in commercials, games and the like, but the fact that the series titled Dragon Ball Super is beginning is the best thing ever.”

Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki commented on the new series as well, saying, “As I read the plot I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear...”

Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as well as for "original story & character concepts." Toei Animation's Kimitoshi Chioka (Hakaba Kitarō, Kamisama Kazoku) is the series director, and Naoko Sagawa (Yomiko Advertising, Inc.) and Atsushi Kido (Toei Animation) join Nozaki as producers. Kido entered Toei just as the company was animating the Dragon Ball Z anime's Freeza arc.

A new film taking place after the Majin Buu Saga, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' (key visual seen right,) premiered in Japan earlier this month. The film will eventually screen in 74 countries worldwide. Funimation hosted the North American premiere of the film on April 11 in Los Angeles. The company plans to release the film in more theaters with an English dub this summer.

that was some great world expansion and it gave us pikkon. i actually wish they would've integrated him into the main cast. maybe they can roll out to the West Galaxy and kick it w/ him.

i just feel like earth-based DBZ is kind of played out since the scale has opened up so much. i'd be down for some dragonball fuckery on a galaxy level.

they discussed the possibility that the show will retcon GT since Battle of Gods, and Revival of F are part of official canon or will they work a way around it to keep GT part of the universe

Wish they would've just stayed in the present timeline instead of going to the new future where there's already a set of Trunks and Mai. That made little sense to me.

But that end scene where Trunks saw Gohan/Piccolo and thought about how he failed Future Gohan got me a bit teary. The guy's had a ROUGH life to say the least.

i *might* go back and watch the first few eps once the series is done but just these eps alone are fixing everything i hated about post-cell Dragonball Z

7 has a dude who want toe to toe with Goku during the Buu Saga, helped Goku handle King Cold, Frieza, Cell, and the Gibu Force...and they're going to war for the literal fate of their existence with master fucking Roshi instead of Pikkon?

The entire Universe is on the line, not just Earth, and Pikkon absolutely should have been included in this as well as at least one new character from U7 hailing from the North or South quadrant.

Don't get me wrong, I love the entire Super arc as I've read it so far (I'm watching the weekly English dubs on Adult Swim instead of the Japanese version.) but this is a flaw that screamed out big time when I saw the lineup.

I get the inclusion of 17 and 18 and I see the logic employed to keep this centered on Earthbound fighters, but Goku's history with Pikkon should have been enough given the fact that dude was basically Goku West Coast. If they could pull Frieda from Other world, Pikkon should have been Goku's first choice over Frieza

And ultimately i'd rather watch Freiza here than Pakon

He was cool, but we already have Piccolo

Toei made him up for anime filler and the Janemba movie

Great character though. I'd love for Toriyama to actually make him legit.

This is a total aside but something that's irking me to no end going back through Z and going through Super.

She should be gladly footing the bill for Goku & Chi Chi's entire existence. Lord knows she can afford to do so without so much as a hiccup in her finances it would remove the one obstacle to Chi Chi allowing the men in her life to maintain their training so that, you know, they're ready to hold shit down when the next insanely powered alien being tries to destroy the world. You'd think Bulma would see this as a priority considering Goku has literally died saving the world.

But yeah, 17 is a G. I'm glad to see they kept him strong. I'm excited about Super and I'm just watching the weekly English dubs as they come in Adult Swim while keeping up on current eps via podcasts and YouTube.

Masako X and Live Anime Reactions are excellent channels for DB material and current commentary. Both are at the top of my list for DB discussions and I recommend them highly.

I can't stand Seth The Programmer though. Masako X comes across like a nerd in a lovable, endearing and relatable way.

STP comes across like the insufferable nerd who thinks he's cool. Even while being interested in things lime power scaling, listening to him talk about it is grating.

Like, the whole subject is some nerd shit but that turns it into some dork shit.

Everything so far has been reclaiming, combining, and upgrading techniques that had seemingly been forgotten instead of just only adding stuff. Its actually been what's keeping me interested.

I mean, I'd wondered why Kaioken was never used in SSJ form. Now i kinda got to see it. Its also kinda nice to see how some of the old attacks work a little better. I didn't realize the Makankosappo had that much power because Piccolo (or Cell or Buu) never let it charge for long periods of time outside of the fight against Raditz, which is the first time we even see it.

I like that he's been getting some shine lately, it's not likely but I hope that he would be the one to defeat Jiren and not Goku. Maybe shock everyone by having Goku and Vegeta drop out, then have Gohan reach a new form. Otherwise I'm guessing it will be UI Vegito vs. Jiren as the finale.

Basically they have all their best talent focused on the movie, which is due in December.

So the reasoning seems to be that they don't want to saddle us with the lower-tier writers and animators in the meantime.

Hopefully that's the case.

I heard reports awhile back that Super will take us through the end of Z, so whether it's Super or some other name, I'm pretty sure DB will continue.
