"It Follows (David Robert Mitchell, 2015)"

NNNNNNIIIIIIGGGGGAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This shit right here is top notch b. This is one of the best horror movies I've seen in a while son.

This shit should be shown in in sex ed classes across America.

Ole girl who looks like Kat Dennings from The Guest (another dope horror thriller) puts on a great performance here and manages to carry the film effortlessly. She now my vote for go to Scream Queen.

And what I love now is that, just like The Guest, this has a John Carpenter-esque score that is fucking awesome.

So yea, see this and '71. These are movies that either should've been released at the end of last year or later this year. These are not February films.

Pros:

Visuals, camerawork, the score in certain scenes, some genuine suspense.

Cons:

It was too simple. I was hoping it'd be more ambitious and give us some idea of why it was happening, or some kind of message. I didn't want an entire breakdown, just SOMETHING for my mind to contemplate.

It had no climax. The movie meanders around for 90 minutes...sometimes in a good way, mostly in a bad way. The pool scene was totally pointless. Not scary and served no purpose whatsoever.

The score was amazing in certain scenes, but distracting and weird just for the sake of being weird in other scenes. Double-edged sword.

I read absolutely nothing about this movie going on, had no idea what to expect. Overall I enjoyed the scares but this is not a GREAT horror movie.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!! You really needed an explanation for the disease/virus?

Really nigga?

That's what makes the film more threatening. You don't need an origin story for that shit. It's just focusing on one character's fucked up situation and how she deals with it.

But in my mind it's hard to say a movie's great when it doesn't strive for anything more, unless it's perfectly executed (which isn't the case for this one). I thought this movie was "scarier" than The Babadook, for example, but Babadook has a cool story/message behind it that makes it a better MOVIE overall.

It's weirdly polarizing in terms of how scary people think it is. I was only scared in moments, but it's a unique and original film. Muuuuuch more ambitious than It Follows.

All I saw was random fucked-up looking people walking toward her at different times throughout the movie. That's cool that you were able to determine it was a disease though with 0 supporting information.

If you're so certain the movie had a climax, what scene was it? All I saw in the pool scene was a guy in boxers throwing TVs...that supposed to be scary? What was accomplished in that scene?

Seeing as this is basically an STD what else would you call it? You get it through sex. How is that not enough supporting information.

The whole sequence in the pool was the climax b. I don't know how the fuck you think that's not. They went there to pretty much end the shit once and for all. It was suspenseful and engaging.

Also, what do you consider "scary"? Cause the movie had a tense atmosphere the whole time that made it tense and made it seem like a nightmare from the moment she wakes up in the wheelchair.

*SPOILERS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE YET TO PEEP IT*

Whether they did or not is left up to audience in the last two minutes of the movie. I really have no idea why you need everything spelt out for you when if you marinate on it for two minutes you can fill in the gaps yourself.

Who were the walkers then, and why were they invisible to everyone else? Why were some of them relatively normal looking, and some of them totally fucked up? I would guess it was some kind of evil force instead of a disease...I didn't want everything spelled out, just an IDEA.

Mehhhhhhhh, weak climax then. Guy in boxers throwing TVs. Sorry. The pool scene was another detour, not a climax. They went there to end it, and failed miserably. I get that they used high school student logic because they're high schoolers, but the scene just didn't benefit the movie whatsoever. They already established earlier in the film that shooting one doesn't kill it.

I said the movie was scary overall, just not the pool scene. I said this is "scarier" than Babadook. I didn't hate the movie, it's just not great and doesn't deserve a ton of hype.

Now I don't want to polarize in terms of "this is what dudes think when they see this movie, this is what ladies think" but I saw it with a female friend of mine and afterwards her thoughts on it really interested me. She didn't read the STD bit AT ALL and totally saw it as showing the sort of reputation/shame/guilt/ego that grows within newly sexually active teens. The guilt and feeling of being wrong, bad, cursed, etc for women. The women are the ones most terrified of it. The fellas, well either they just passed it on and try to be tough about it, like "sucks to be you!" (first guy) or out of sexual desire or desire to be the dominant man decided to hit it and take on the burden of the...ghost, demon, whatever it was...only they turn out to be not strong enough, and they get got.

I didn't really think it was that scary, but it's a pretty accurate depiction of the fear and shame around teen sexuality.

Not saying that the STD reading isn't there, cause it obviously is, but I think the other reading goes a bit deeper.

as well as seeing it as a metaphor for losing childhood and heading into adulthood. And looking back, I think this makes more sense than the STD thing. Because no men were afraid of it. Even the dude who fought it, got scratched by it and knows for a fact it's real still wanted it in the end (which probably wouldn't happen with an STD.)

The only nitpick I have, is why in the blue fuck was ole girl wearing them damn heels when she was running outta the house?

Otherwise I loved this shit, and there was some good suspense.

I can't say enough about the mythology, the camera work, man i'm with this.

...when I tell you I left the theater looking around like O_ O_ _O _O at anyone walking near me...

The script is very much predictable and formulaic, but the execution more than makes up for it...

There were a couple of nitpicks, but this has some cool throwbacks for a new movie that is a combination of a slasher and a paranormal horror subgenre film.

Between the cars, the fact that all of these kids will sit around watching black and white movies on rabbit ear TV's and how nobody so much as mentions the internet, it had a real 70's feel to it. But the girl with glasses had that little clamshell e-reader, and girl from the very beginning did have a cell phone.

I admit, it was a little bit distracting trying to figure out if this was supposed to take place in the past or not, but thinking back, I'm not really bothered by it, even though usually things like this drive me insane. Maybe because it fit so well with the score (seriously, this would've been such a worse movie with a different score.)

I mean when homeboy was about to get it in his own crib, she didn't grab the cell and run, she used the land line.

All of which I appreciated. Even the appliances being thrown in the pool were like mid 80's stuff. Again I liked it and it'll age better that way.

and also girl in the beginning lived in a nicer, RICHER area too if you remember i.e. manicured lawns, better looking houses, etc.

most folk weren't even bothered by it. they just went with it. I felt like the slight time distraction was intentional. Yara (girl with the glasses) had the e-clam reader, yet Jay and her sister Kelly lived in a house that screamed working class. it definitely added to the atmosphere of the movie....

the soundtrack was hot fiyah though! I'm soooo getting it on payday this coming week.

27. "David Robert Mitchell explains the ending *swipe*"
In response to Reply # 0

Everything he said is what I pretty much thought of.

http://collider.com/it-follows-ending/

When I saw It Follows I found there was a lot to like about it. The movie was beautifully photographed and featured excellent performances, great music and some truly unsettling scares. But I had a few issues with the film and the conversation around it. First of all, I think many folks are doing it a disservice by calling it “the best horror film in 10 years” or (even more damaging) proclaiming one of many variations I’ve been hearing on the theme of “everything else is trash, this is perfect.” While I would certainly say that It Follows is better than 95% of horror films out there, I think overly exalting the film sets up unrealistic expectations and denigrates the horror genre (which I actually think has a lot of good things going for it right now). Make no mistake, most filmmakers will never pull something off that matches the quality of It Follows, I just feel that it’s too early in the story of this movie and the world’s accompanying reaction to put it at the top of the mountain.

Another issue I had, this time with the actual film, was with the ending. I felt that the plan the central characters enacted to get rid of the titular “It” was dumb and, at the time, felt like first draft logic to justify a set piece that director David Robert Mitchell had in his head and really wanted to do. After all, why would these kids take all of their typewriters to a public pool to try and electrocute this thing when they have zero evidence it will work (and mounting evidence that it can’t be killed at all)? But was I being myopic in this assessment? Probably yes, as it turns out. Last night I had a conversation with my friend Jeremy about the ending and he urged me to look into the emotional logic of it, that it perhaps is what kids would do in this situation. It turns out Mitchell shares this assessment.

He tells Vulture:

“It’s the stupidest plan ever! It’s a kid-movie plan, it’s something that Scooby-Doo and the gang might think of, and that was sort of the point. What would you do if you were confronted by a monster and found yourself trapped within a nightmare? Ultimately, you have to resort to some way of fighting it that’s accessible to you in the physical world, and that’s not really going to cut it. We kind of avoid any kind of traditional setup for that sequence, because in more traditional horror films, there might be a clue that would lead them to figure out a way to destroy this monster. I intentionally avoided placing those. Instead, they do their best to accomplish something, and we witness its failure. It’s probably a very non-conventional way of approaching the third-act confrontation, but we thought it was a fun way to deal with it.”

Hearing Mitchell acknowledge this is incredibly heartening and sort of makes me want to go back to the theater and give that It Follows ending another try on its own terms. Looking back on it with this in mind, I’m already inclined to embrace the film on a higher level. By the way if you’re a horror fan this movie is absolutely mandatory viewing. If you’re unfamiliar with it, you probably shouldn’t have read this article, but we’ve still got the first trailer, the international trailer and the second international trailer and Perri’s review to get caught up if that’s the case. It Follows expands to more theaters this weekend.

Kubrick-meets-Evil-Dead-Raimi

The score was great

The young actors were solid

Not a "GOTCHA!" scary movie, just a film filled with ominous doom and creeping dread

So it worked for me

I would be VERY interested in getting different gender readings on the movie like the one up above...

I think I agree with most of Deebot's sentiments.

Thought it was very well made, but poorly thought out.

Reminds me of 90s Wong Kar-Wai where atmosphere and visuals take front seat to coherent plot.

Didn't like the pool scene at all. Sure, it was a stupid plan invented by teenagers, and I have no problem with that, but it made no sense based on what we already knew about It. They showed It being invincible to bullets when they went to the beach house, and the herby dude shot It in the head at the pool when it was covered in the bedsheets. That didn't work, so why would another shot to the head immediately cause It to bleed out. The whole movie I was waiting for a payoff, and the pool scene didn't make enough sense to deliver. I liked the final scene where they're walking together with somebody walking in the background, but the pool scene just didn't work for me.

Other than that it was a good flick. The pacing and intensity was strong throughout, the music was on point for the most part, and the actors did a good job. But I was a little disappointed based off of the hype this movie was getting on here.

Nothing this well shot/scored can be dismissed.

Tarantino was right about the film's "logic"... but honestly, logic ranks pretty much dead last on my horror movie priority list, so it didn't bother me.

Nothing here made my skin crawl the way The Babadook did, and there isn't the same level of character development/ambition... but again, that's okay. It's a lovely, artful, and deeply unsettling horror flick. Strong recommendation.

But this was super dope. I loved the tactic of making the viewer feel unsettled by not knowing what the tropes really are given the total ambiguity as to what time period we’re in. Shit is flames.
