Right? I assume it's far too late to shoehorn him into Age of Ultron.

I actually didn't mind Garfield as Peter, but I'm sure they'll go for someone new.

He'll definitely make his first appearance in Civil War. I've heard that Black Panther has taken Spider-Man's place in the story, but I'm assuming they'll intro him somehow. I'm also assuming that Civil War, for all intents and purposes, will be Avengers 2.5 and include a number of other superheroes.

Fans have been rooting for this for years despite the improbability of this happening. Its cool to see that these companies can try to look at the bigger picture every now and then. Of course, it didn't hurt that the last 3 Spidey movies failed to hit expectations. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 forced Sony to eat a huge slice of humble pie.

I wish Black Panther wasn't being pushed back. But I completely understand why Marvel would give priority to Spider-Man. They've wanted this for years.

I wish they could keep him but to have Garfield would mean that his Spider-Man movies would be part of the MCU and I'm sure Marvel wants NO parts of that mess.

Audiences are smart and can just ignore movies. Same way X-Men Origins: Wolverine is pretty much ignored in the X-Men franchise.

You can keep Garfield and still move forward. I like but not love Garfield in the role, but I'd rather he keep then being subjected to another reboot cause they recast an actor.

The Stark/Parker relationship is worth exploring on screen and that would have been a great combo with the snarky way Garfield plays Parker.

I think it's a good idea too. That way, if Sony wants to do ANOTHER origin film, they can but it will be a different storyline altogether.

If they keep Garfield, then keep Parker.

But if they don't, it's better to recast it.

That does allow them to align the universes better. No continuity issues if you use a different SM. I think that Marvel has shown they can create fan favorites out of somewhat unknown characters.

It would make sense, financially. It's really a waste to not use him to take advantage of markets that are underserved yet spend more money... Why continue to ignore these markets just to promote another white guy that's already had 5 flicks in the last 15 years? And they want to make him young again?

Miles story would be refreshing for viewers. They could fall in love with Spider-Man all over again cause Miles is the future of Spider-Man, if they actually promote him

They have the power & I think the responsibility to feature Miles Morales as Spider-Man in the MCU

However, it will be interesting to see how this unfolds. I want to know who gets what percentage of the profits from films that use Spider-Man, and I want to know what resources Marvel is using to try to "fix" Spider-Man, and I want to know if Sony will use that "final say" everyone is reporting they have to veto shit that Marvel tries to implement.

Should be very interesting, to say the least.

Except in this case, it'll be split between two companies with Marvel having 100% control over Avengers while sharing input on Sony, with Sony/Pascal having more input in the standalone movies.

I think the big difference is Feige replace Arad although you KNOW that Amy Pascal and her Sony people aren't going to sit there and get lectured by Feige. Honestly, I wouldn't be stunned if it was more of a PR move as the main thing that they could do to get Spidey's rep back up is to say that Marvel is becoming involved and to get Spidey in the bigger Avengers movies.

the Ant-Man process seemed to show Feige and Co. have a very singular vision for their properties...get in line or get out. seems at odds to put their name on a marquee property without having basically final cut.

Then not have access to Spidey at all while watching Sony fuck up a key property of yours.

The reports say that Sony has final cut so that would make me guess that there might be a little less input from Feige on those since he doesn't have final say. Not sure he'd invest a ton of time on something he can't make money off of (film-wise) and that he can't control completely.

But, honestly, who knows at this point.

Or Sinister Six.

He might just be there to go, "yeah, so this is how it needs to tie in with what we're doing. Aside from that, have fun." There's obviously zero chance Marvel is gonna throw its characters into a flick with the Sony name on it, so it's mostly being done so Spidey can get in on the action in the Marvel sequels. So it would seem, anyhow.

Really, this deal benefits Sony immensely. They get to piggyback on what Marvel has done. I still haven't really heard a detailed explanation regarding the benefit to Marvel, other than getting to slide him into the sequel of a franchise that is already established. The upside is far more on the side of Sony... unless there's stuff in that contract that they aren't going public with. Which is what I'm guessing is the case.

I'd love to see them do something different and have Miles be the guy, but c'mon, this is Spider-Man, one of the top 4 comic book characters, period. Marvel doesn't strike a deal of any kind to put someone other than Peter Parker into their movies.

I'm all for including Miles in a smaller capacity somewhere else, like one of the TV shows or after Infinity War, but not as the initial Spider-Man.

They're simply playing nice and sharing Spider-Man. According to filmshowing.net:

- Marvel won't make any money on the solo films that star Spider-Man or Spider-Man characters (at least, not the percentage of box office that one would assume might have been attached to this deal).
- Sony won't make any money on the Marvel films that feature Spider-Man or Spider-Man characters either.
- Kevin Feige will be a producer on the solo film and will serve as an advisor in the reboot process. He will not be advising on the Sinister Six film, the Venom film, or any of those already in development at Sony. Only on what is tentatively being called the "reboot."

That makes me wonder how much creative continuity will exist between Sony and Marvel incarnations. I assume that’s the goal, but the lack of any financial arrangement makes me question how deeply he’ll integrate into the MCU.

I’m also wondering if this means Sony will allow other Spider-Man characters in the movie, because this opens up an absolutely perfect way to introduce Venom via Guardians Of The Galaxy.

... I'd say Feige just wants a new Spidey in Cap 3 or whatever the Marvel film is, and he wants control over who that new guy is, so the arrangement is based on that.

All the other stuff-- Venom, Daily Bugle, Black Cat, Spidey villains, etc-- I doubt he tries to involve. He'll keep it nice and simple: use the flagship character when he deems it appropriate for the Marvel stuff, not pay attention to most of the Sony stuff.

Now, some are theorizing Feige wouldn't even dare make this deal unless he really wanted to be hands-on with all this. Which seems consistent with what we know about him... except I struggle to reconcile that theory with the fact that, if Feige works really hard on the Sony film, Sony gets the box office profits, not Marvel. I feel like his crosshairs will be focused far more on Phase 3 and beyond to sweat the Spidey solo venture or further incorporation of other characters too much.

RUMOR: MILES MORALES NIGGAS!!!

http://collider.com/new-spider-man-movie-marvel-non-white-spider-man/

Just a couple of weeks ago, Sony officially confirmed that Spider-Man is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man. Sony has final approval over casting and the studio is currently on the hunt for someone “much younger” than the 31-year-old Amazing Spider-Man star because apparently, Sony and Marvel are bringing the character back to high school.

Back when that news broke, we also got a rumor claiming that Logan Lerman and Dylan O’Brien were being considered for the role, but now we’ve got a new detail from The Wrap’s Jeff Sneider (via /Film) that could take both of them out of the running. Here’s what Sneider said while on the Meet the Movie Press podcast:

“Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. Spider-Man is not going to be white … I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.”

Could that mean the new Spider-Man is Miles Morales and not Peter Parker? As someone who doesn’t know a thing about the source material, I certainly can’t comment on whether or not Miles’ story would make for a good movie, but making the move from Peter to Miles would certainly fix the issue of seeing Peter Parker’s origin story too many times over. Sneider wouldn’t confirm that Sony and Marvel are looking for a Miles Morales specifically, but he did add the following:

“I don’t think it’s gonna be Peter Parker.”

Per usual, this is a rumor so I wouldn’t get carried away with the idea just yet, but it does seem like a smart move. Sneider also suggested that this could be a good opportunity for Marvel to beat DC in the race to bring a black comic book character to screen:

“I really feel strongly. Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character. You know, like I mentioned last week, the emails that leaked were perceived as racist in some quarters. I really think that’s gonna play into things.”

These are some bold statements so I’d like to think that Sneider’s got some concrete information there, but, of course, we’ll have to wait until Sony and Marvel reveal the official plan. We know Spider-Man is getting his own solo film on July 28, 2017, but before that, the studios plan to introduce him in another MCU movie. Odds are, that movie will be Captain America: Civil War and if that’s the case, we could get official casting details sooner rather than later.

While we wait, you can check out Sneider discussing Spider-Man on Meet the Movie Press below. The Spidey talk begins at 44:30.

But the current writer of Amazing Spider-Man, Dan Slott has been on his twitter explaining that Peter Parker should be cast by the best man for the role, not just the best white man for the role.

In response to Reply # 49

I guess you would have to have access to the initial agreements to know this kind of stuff but I would assume that Marvel retains the rights to the Miles Morales character. I'm not exactly that up on comic book stuff but isn't Morales a fairly recent creation and a character that hadn't even been conceived when Marvel sold the rights to Sony back in the 90's?

I guess they could've conveyed the rights as Spiderman, Peter Parker, and all future alter-ego's of Spiderman but that seems kind of unlikely to me. And if Marvel still has the rights to Morales I can't imagine they would convey them to Sony just for the rights to get Spiderman to do guest spots in their already massively successful string of movies.

Sony is already on their third attempt and building a sustainable Spiderman franchise, why give them access to a new character with his own set of storylines for Spiderman?

In response to Reply # 0
Mon Mar-02-15 03:54 PM by bwood

WWWWWOOOOOOO!!!!

Devin also fails to mention that Drew wrote some of the best episodes of the severely underrated Angel.

He also wrote some of the best episodes of Lost before jumping ship right before Season 5 (no pun intended)

He also wrote episodes of Alias which I never watched (should I Netflix it?)

http://badassdigest.com/2015/03/02/drew-goddard-to-write-direct-marvels-new-spider-man/

Just in case you didn't think Marvel working out a deal with Sony to get Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe wasn't the best news ever, it just got better: according to Latino Review Drew Goddard will be writing and directing the new film which, aping the titles of the comics, may be called Spectacular Spider-Man*.

Goddard is one of the great underused filmmakers of our time. He worked on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, wrote Cloverfield and fixed the ending of World War Z (it feels like it's from a different movie, but it's the best part of the full film). But he's also had problems - his masterpiece directorial debut Cabin in the Woods sat on a shelf for years, his work on Robopocalypse never came to fruition, he left the Daredevil TV series and he was set to make Sinister Six at Sony when the whole Spidey franchise imploded. But that implosion turned out to be a good thing, and if Latino Review is right this means the absolutely most correct guy is taking on Spider-Man.

The site's source says that there won't be an origin in this new film - they're just jumping right in. That makes sense, as Spidey will be appearing in other Marvel movies first (we all expect him in Captain America: Civil War, but I've been told he will show up in Doctor Strange. We'll see!). They say that the new film will have a high school Spidey going up against Iron Man as he attempts to join the Avengers; I like this, because it reflects Amazing Spider-Man #1, when Spidey tried to join the Fantastic Four. I hope it goes as badly. The Sinister Six will be formed by the end of the first film, Latino Review's sources say.

If this is all true then it shows that Marvel is striding the landscape like a confident giant, just stepping wherever they want and dominating everything. Goddard on Spider-Man is the dream that should have come true back when Sony first rebooted the property.

* go all the way and make it Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man, guys!

SPIDER-MAN: Kevin Feige Confirms Peter Parker; Talks High School Spidey

When word first surfaced that maybe Marvel Studios was in the process of working out a deal with Sony Pictures to bring Spider-Man into the MCU fold, many (myself included) balked at this as a pipe dream. There was no way Sony was going to give up its only comic book character in the midst of the superhero boom, especially to the most successful studio making superhero movies at the moment. But the impossible happened: a deal in which Sony retains ownership of Spider-Man, but shares the character with Marvel Studios for use in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Marvel’s Kevin Feige overseeing things creatively.

A fair amount of the credit for pulling this deal off goes to Feige, so it’s no wonder that he’s got big plans for how to bring Spidey into the MCU fold. With rumors swirling that the character will make his first appearance in the about-to-start-filming Captain America: Civil War, casting is currently underway to find the new Spider-Man. Everyone’s got an opinion on who should play the new webslinger, but as Marvel and Sony started searching for the right actor, many began to wonder: will the new Spider-Man be Peter Parker, or could Marvel be going a different route and using someone like Miles Morales instead?

The initial press release regarding the Spider-Man deal name-dropped Peter Parker, but fans were still curious whether Marvel might be switching things up. Steve recently spoke with Feige at the press day for Avengers: Age of Ultron, and he not only set the record straight on who their Spider-Man is, but confirmed his age:

“In terms of the age of an actor we’ll eventually to cast, I don’t know. In terms of the age of what we believe Peter Parker is, I’d say 15-16 is right.”

So that settles that: the new Spider-Man will still be Peter Parker. But in terms of him being high school-age, we’ve been hearing for a while now that this was the age range Marvel was aiming for. Speaking with Steve, Feige explained why he’s eager to bring forth a Spider-Man that’s still in high school:

“We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there’ve been five Spider-Man films and the amazing thing about it is, even though there’ve been five Spider-Man films, there are so many things from the comics that haven’t been done yet. Not just characters or villains or supporting characters, but sides to his character. The most obvious being the ‘young, doesn’t quite fit in’ kid before his powers, and then the fella that puts on a mask and swings around and fights bad guys and doesn’t shut up, which is something we want to play with and we’re excited about.”

Indeed, the minute word surfaced about the Marvel Spider-Man being high school-aged, it made sense as a foil for the rest of the established characters in the MCU:

“I think it was midway through the first film that he graduated high school. At the beginning of the second Marc Webb film, he graduated high school. And some of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he’s in high school for a lot of it. We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU, which is something else we want to explore: how unique he is when now put against all these other characters.”

With filming on Civil War about to get underway and a standalone Spider-Man movie (produced by Feige) set for release on July 28, 2017, expect to hear casting news on that front sooner rather than later.
