"Divergent (Burger, 2014)"

Son this shit is convoluted that I did not get what was going on at all. Why did the one faction want to take over? It seemed like their perfect society was working just fine.

The direction is hella bland too.

My brother and I watched this shit on HBO last night and this shit was so telegraphed we called half the fucking movie about 40 minutes in.

Speaking of, this movie gets an hour and some change into the movie before explaining what exactly Divergent is and why that's a bad thing.

Also, in just the first 30 minutes, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENS. That shit is the first 15 minutes of any other movie.

I feel as if Veronica Roth, author of the book series, read The Hunger Games one night and drank a lot of molly water while "writing this". Not only did this seem like a rip-off, but it lacked coherence. I don't know how many times my brother and I asked why this or that was happening or why certain characters had the motivations they did.

This movie is strictly for the people who've read the books.

Like if anyone can tell me what the purpose was for Miles Teller's character was please feel free to explain.

This shit was a setup for the sequel(s) that was uninvolved in telling a story that made sense.

And maybe the book is so dense that they had to fight their battles, but this movie couldn't even spark my interest to at least pick it up and see.

This shit here explains the plot more than the actual movie does: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPUZo3dQSEM

And this shit brings up more problems with the film as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QOn064kKDI

the book ended on a cliffhanger, and they changed the ending to not have the movie be so much of a cliffhanger. Its definitely a Hunger Game ripoff, but not a good one.....

the direction was bland which is odd because Burger is way more competent than that. It was a let down for me with him here...

and it is convoluted unnecessarily so.

>
>My brother and I watched this shit on HBO last night and this
>shit was so telegraphed we called half the fucking movie about
>40 minutes in.

shit was dull. despite game turns by Shailene Woodley (She's growing on me and I have liked her movies choices so far...even that dull ass Greg Araki tripe (Eva Green, Gabourey Sidibe, Christ Meloni, Angela Bassett, Woodley and Thomas Jane can't even elevate a dull ass plot and storyline SMH) that's coming out next year (man, how did Araki FALL OFF after blessing us with the brilliance that is Mysterious Skin? SMH)), Kate Winslet (she needs to play more baddies because she CLEARLY enjoyed the hell out of doing it), Zoe Kravitz (she gets better and better each film) and Ashley Judd (like, for real, can we get Ashley Judd in an action movie? Someone make this a thing because she brought more fiyah at the end of the movie than the leads did through MOST OF IT...) and Maggie Q.

Miles Teller was pointless in the movie (and honestly, I know niggas STAN for him and he was really good in Whiplash, but dude is *NOT* a leading man. Not by ANY stretch of the word).

Mekhi Phifer: damn, everytime I see him in something, I see just how limited he is period.

Jai Courtney: Sheesh....I really want to like him as an actor. But he's SO damn dull and bland...like in a sea of dull ass white male actors, Courtney *STILL* wouldn't even stand out. And once again, wasn't his and Mekhi's characters serving the EXACT same purpose? Why did we need BOTH of them?

>
>Speaking of, this movie gets an hour and some change into the

YUP. And that should have been the *FIRST* thing that was explained...

>Also, in just the first 30 minutes, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

YES...shit was lame as hell.

And even then...maybe not because I know people who read the books who were pissed at how convoluted the movie was and how not good it was either...

Hunger Games works because it's a teen story that doesn't (always) feel like a teen story.

All the way through, Divergent feels like a story for teens, written BY teens.

It's not like HG was exactly subtle in parts, but at least it didn't always beat you over the head with it.

because I JUST watched this on HBO today myself. Had no desire to see the movie, but kept seeing it in the program guide, so decided to give it a shot.

This movie was mad boring. It definitely hit all the YA tropes. But lacked any sense of urgency. The reported budget was $85 million. Where was it? Cause I didn't see it on the screen. Did they spend all that money on elevated trains? Why were there like 4 different scenes of them jumping on this train? The train doesn't make any stops?

Anyway, this just wasn't interesting. Like you said, they have all these factions but no explanation on why one is trying to take over the other ones. Also, why was being a "divergent" such a big deal if you could test into one faction and STILL transfer to a completely different faction. It made no sense to me.

I have a feeling the sequel will not make as much money as this one domestically. International receipts might go up a tick, but I think less people will see the sequel in North America.

It was a completely underwhelming film.
