The original freaked me the fuck out, but I was a kid. Not sure how it holds up (don't want to see it again).

But Fukunaga? Those visuals? That premise?

I saw the cat that played the grown up Bill. Told him I loved that movie and he was surprised I remembered it.

Tim Curry though his voice was perfect. Between that role and Captain Hook on Peter Pan and the Pirates, he was made to be a villian.

I think he could still play it. I don't think it's an age specific role. Let Tim Curry be "Pennywise" and move out of the way.

This article from last year when it happened claimed he was doing okay. But who knows. They lie about that kind of stuff all the time. I sure hope he's okay. He has some recent credits on imdb but they are for voice acting and no indication if they were pre or post stroke.

Apparently "everything" went wrong with it from the get go:

http://www.hitfix.com/news/what-went-wrong-with-the-it-remake

Stephen King adaptation has been put on hold indefinitely
By Chris Eggertsen @HitFixChris | Tuesday, May 26, 2015 2:52 PM

Well, so much for that.

Cary Fukunaga has dropped out of New Line's planned two-part adaptation of "It," forcing the studio to push the project indefinitely, according to The Wrap. Here's Stephen King's reaction to the news:

"The remake of IT may be dead--or undead--but we'll always have Tim Curry. He's still floating down in the sewers of Derry."

So what happened? Try everything. (Yes, even the "Poltergeist" remake could be a factor!) Here's a handy list of rumored reasons for the split.

1. Budget

While New Line greenlit the first "It" installment at a reported $30 million, they allegedly cut the budget over Fukunaga's protests.

2. Location

Fukunaga reportedly wanted to shoot the film in New York, despite the studio's wish to shoot in a more cost-effective location (read: one with generous tax incentives). (See: Reason #1.)

3. Studio change

"It" was originally set up at Warner Bros., but switched over to Time Warner subsidiary New Line in recent weeks, an upheaval that may have precipitated Fukunaga's exit.

4. Casting issues

Ben Mendelsohn ("Bloodline") was reportedly Fukunaga's first choice for the role of Pennywise, but the actor was allegedly asking for more than the studio was willing to pay. Will Poulter ("We're the Millers") later entered talks for the part, though now that Fukunaga has exited it's unclear whether the actor's involvement will continue.

5. Fukunaga's epic vision

The director was reportedly a big fan of King's 1,000-plus page novel and felt the project deserved a bigger canvas. Unfortunately, his two-part approach may have been too much for New Line, budget-wise.

6. "Poltergeist's" underwhelming first-weekend gross

Is it possible that New Line got cold feet after the Gil Kenan-directed remake brought in a so-so $27.7 million this weekend? I can't say for certain, but the reported reason behind it -- that because the marketing for "Poltergeist" heavily featured a scary clown, no one will therefore want to see another movie about a scary clown -- is typically short-sighted Hollywood logic.

They're money-making machines designed to minimize costs, no matter the talent involved. At least the studio ones. But we all already knew this.

At least Lynch is on for Twin Peaks...still got that to look forward to.

I'm giving this a shot even though I think Pennywise could've looked even more deranged.

Here's hoping the director, Andres Muschetti, doesn't blow this film's tension like he did in Mama by showing the killer too much.

Not sure if that means this movie will focus only on the kids, but if so, not a bad idea at all. Less tones/themes/eras to juggle will help keep things simpler, which is usually a virtue in a horror movie.

Let it be known off the rip that I didn’t hate It. In fact, there’s much to love here. It’s just that the hype surrounding this film going into the theater did not match my expectations. But, It is the jolt of life that’s needed right now and a welcome distraction of classic good versus evil. This also stands much higher than the 1990 miniseries.

In Derry, Maine in the summer of 1989, a group of kids who call themselves The Losers Club encounter an ancient evil being known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård). Pennywise has been linked to the various disappearances of kids and teens in Derry. When Pennywise sets his sights on The Losers Club, the group must not only overcome their fear but their personal problems in the process.
image

The stand out factor in this movie head and shoulders above everything else is the character development on The Losers and all their retrospective performances. Every single one of these kids are acting as if their life depended on it. The standout, however, is Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier. Everyone knows this kid as Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things, and here when things get too unbearable he always brings it back down to earth with a crass, profanity laden comment or joke. And yes, Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise is menacing and terrifying in a way that Tim Curry’s wasn’t (Tim is still the man in that role though.

The photography is amazing in this as director Andy Muschietti got Park Chan-wook’s, DP Chung-hoon Chung. Muschietti juggled the right performances with the right images to make a well-crafted movie. The sequence with the carousel slide projector packs so many thrills and suspense into such a small sequence that I asked myself why can’t more modern horror movies do more of that including the rest of It.

Yet, I do wish the film explored more into the insidious side of this fictional town of Derry. The film points out that there is something more at work in Derry itself outside of Pennywise. Outside of a few parents and a store clerk and a librarian, adults are largely absent from this film. I’ll tell you that I wanted their presence more and could’ve planted some seeds of just why it seems the adults are indifferent to the disappearances of the children.

My other main problem with this movie is outside of the character development and direction is that feels and plays like a standard studio horror movie. In lesser hands, this could’ve been soulless. As it is you can see the machinations of WB at work here. When Cary Fukunaga was attached, he was going for a more psychological aspect than the conventional jump scare route. Birth.Movies.Death covered just what could have been and it seems like a missed opportunity to really subvert the things and get more into the personal demons of the kids that Steven King did in his book in a much more visceral way. Now, I’m not saying we need all the sex stuff cause ew, but Cary was right in that WB wanted a more traditional horror movie.

This movie is indicative of the problem with Rotten Tomatoes. I don’t hate It. I would not give it a rotten score. But, I also would not give a fresh as this has too many fingerprints on it of a generic studio horror movie in its execution. To sum up my feelings, let me take you to a scene from the first season of The Wire in the ninth episode. Omar goes to a stash house asking for money. The dealers are so scared that they throw out a trash bag of drugs to Omar instead. Omar inspects the product and says, “Fair enough”. That was me with It. With the movie being hyped up for weeks on how good it was as well as just the route path the film takes, I can say “fair enough” without being too moved by it all. I will say that once they show the title card again before the start of the end credits, they add something that had my audience cheering. I get why people would love this film as when that end title card came up, I won’t lie in that I’m ready to go the journey with everyone there.

The kids do a good job. I liked all of them. No one says anything particularly cringy.

The clown is good. It's a monster from the beginning, so none of the weirdly effective creepy corniness of Tim Curry's clown. Gets a little digital at times. There's nothing particularly original about any of the scares, but it's well-made.

This isn't The Shining. It's not Misery. But it's a good movie, between a b minus and a solid b.

It's a classic story written by a GOAT novelist featuring an iconic villain.

The Spielbergian aspect is enough to generate interest, but the hype is due to this being a big screen adaptation of well known, well regarded source material.

getting a big-screen adaptation is getting "hype"?

I'm confused.

It's a film based on one of the most classic, beloved stories written by a GOAT novelist that just kicked off horror movie season.

Everything about that screams "event movie".

i was skeptical going in....(wondered how/if they were gonna try to cram a miniseries into 1 movie, and i didn't have any advance knowledge of the creative team behind this adaption)...

but damn loved it....i had a grin on my face the whole flick....yeah, i know.. "a grin? i thought this was supposed to be a scary flick?"....well yeah, but its that GOOD kinda scary....that kinda scary thats not the 'jump outta your seat' scary, but more the 'ohhh man thats freaky' kinda scary...and yeah that gave me a GOOD grin....an 'I'm having such a GOOD time' grin....

the kid actors are SUPERB!! thank you whoever casted this group, because you HAD to have kids who could deliver believable emotional performances, and these kiddo's DID.....

the actor playing Pennywise was great too man....i dug it, and there were some nice cineffex done to help enhance the creepiness....well done....

this had the 'spirit' of those really good 80s 'young slice of life flicks', and yeah i'm one who has nostalgia for that sort of thing, and i wont apologize for having a soft spot when that kind of charm is executed well in a flick (as it was here)....thats the 'soul' of it for me...Pennywise or no Pennywise, i'd like to follow this group of 'losers' on whatEVER their next adventures might be...

went with some younger folk, (friends of my daughters in their mid 20s, coworkers in their 30s, and me & my wife in our 50s...EVERYONE loved it, so in my opinion, i'd say its a keeper...

well done...we're actually gonna see it again next week with a coworker who loves Stephen King stuff....

The kids did a really good job. This Pennywise was good and a bit more viscous than the OG but worked as another take on the iconic character. Bill was good but it really seemed to be the Beverly Marsh show. Bev got a ton of screen time and she did a lot with it. I only wish some of the other losers got some of that love. Eddie got fleshed out a bit but Stan and Mike are damn near shells. You don't get much of any character development for those two. Bare minimum. This Bill was good but IMO didn't have the leadership quality of the OG.

All in all I'm very happy with this film and glad it was made. Didn't feel unnecessary. Let's see what they do from here.

The child actors playing the Losers were great, especially the kid from Stranger Things and the girl playing Beverly.

I thought the new Pennywise was effectively menacing.

Sure there were lots of jump scares but I was okay with that. I jumped.

Only minor gripe was that of all the Losers, I don't think they gave quite enough screen time to the one black kid. He's introduced early on, and we don't really see him again until like forty minutes into the movie.

On IMDB a lot of the reviews complain about the heavy CGI in the movie. Eh, it didn't really bother me at all.

I will say that the opening scene is great and sets a really dark, sinister tone that the rest of the movie doesn't quite live up to.

Still this is very enjoyable and worth watching at the theater.

saw it in a huge theater with a small crowd, so it felt a lil scary.

i read the book as a youngin and watched the miniseries in high school. they did a really good job with this film.

them kids acted their fucking asses off, especially beverly. character development.

felt like there were a few subtle nods to the goonies, lord of the flies and stand by me.

film coulda been 15-20 minutes shorter, but whatever.

shout out to the only black kid in maine.

still holds up very strongly on second viewing ya'll, we throughly enjoyed it just as much as the first time actually.

on a side note, my brother texted me from out of town and said he'd read some bad reviews online, so he wasn't gonna see it....i told him "man, don't listen to no damn online reviews, cuz online folks are gonna ALWAYS find SOMEthing negative about something"...

so he went....and said he's damn glad he did, cuz he totally dug it.
i thought his description was pretty on point....he said it was like "Stand By Me + Stranger Things + Nightmare On Elm Street"

one of the few worth the opening night hassle, for atmosphere alone.

1. The horror tropes are so by the book, predictable, and generic that I often groaned out loud. Oh, my, he falls 8 times trying to outrun the bad guy, how suspenseful...

2. The comedic relief kid from stranger things was not funny. They could have inserted some actual humor, but this has hack written all over the writing. Like some adult who does not understand either children or humor wrote these super-forced jokes. Very uninspired casting. Too similar to Stranger Things.

3. Unexplored directions - the whole history of the town shit led to nothing at all and was just forgotten for more scares.

4. The one female being an object that not only two males, fight over and actively pursue, but is objectified throughout the movie (not even talking the dad stuff).

5. The marginalized black man in a horror film.

I could go on. Are there any non-psychotic adults in this town. Trying to remember...

dialogue definitely sounded like an adult trying too hard. from all the kids, really.

although the movie can take blame for this, unfortunately the book is even weirder in this regard

he took out the film's #2 antagonist on his own, when everyone was expecting him to take an L or at best get saved by one of the (white) kids.
