Honestly, a Short Circuit reboot for modern times could be pretty great. The trailer didn't do much for me, mostly because of Blokamp's politics short circuiting the narrative (pun intended but not considered all that funny). I was not a fan of Elysium and I feel like this is the kind of film that could fall apart in the second half when it moves away from a character study and into some sort of statement movie.
Overall, just seems like the kind of movie I'd skip unless reviews were through the roof.
It seems Neil does effects and weapons well enough. But outside of District 9 homie cannot tell a good story to save his life.
I didn't know whether Die Antwoord were playing themselves or a fictionalized version of themselves. Either way they should be in more movies.
Chappie himself was chariming and a well made character. Chappie is Sharlto Copley's best role since A-Team. Along with Die Antwoord and Dev's character, he was the only saving grace. Chappie becoming a gangsta with the gold chains, the walk, the lean, and the nose rub was inspired.
There were things in here that just didn't make sense. When Hugh Jackman slams Dev Patel's head to his desk and holds a gun to his head and the whole office see it, no one reports that shit?
Dev later has evidence that Hugh sabotaged the robot drones and he doesn't go present that shit and turn him in?
And the end got fucking ridiculous b. I couldn't believe the shit this nigga was doing in his own movie. Maybe if they didn't rush it and took their time with that plot point (like a lot of other shit in this movie) it would've worked better b.
Honestly Sigourney Weaver was wasted in this shit. And I honestly wish Hugh Jackman and his entire character and subplot was not in the movie.
It's a shame cause this movie had so much potential. Only positive is that Die Antwoord makes up most of the soundtrack and their music sales will probably go through the roof after this movie.

I got real happy after seeing some of the Alien storyboards he did leaked. Now im worried, since looking back his weakest link has been his scripting/storytelling (the same weak ass link to the visually compelling, but script wise doo do Alien sequels since the second).

Sounds TERRIBLE. I'm not really looking forward to Neil's worl on Alien. I'ma see it regardless - I have to, but I'm not really feeling his track record so far.
It was hilarious to me that I saw two trailers for this. The first made it seem like a tender, funny Short Circuit remake.
The second went hard on the action and made it seem like another District 9 and had absolutely none of the Short Circuit vibe.
I'll pass until/unless it hits Netflix. Honestly the fact that Die Antwoord is the what interested me the most about this movie should be enough of a sign that I should NOT go see it in the theater...

good gawd neural helmets !?! wtf !?! *smh* that was the weakest ever... or maybe I just fail to see how a robots brain is physiologically identical to a human brain so of course the neural helmet technology would just work when placed on the head of robot and human alike and therefore any old neural helmet will do
ughh a lot of terribleness in this movie and it was easily a half hour too long.
Positives: Jackman is having fun. Patel is a nice earnest presence. Blommkamp has a good eye for FX and violence. The first 30 minutes-ish of this, before all of the gangster shit really kicks in, is interesting enough. The ending has the balls to be batshit crazy.
Negatives: most everything else. The gangster shit is super embarrassing, the pace is insanely long, it's mostly unpleasant in tone for its entire 2 hour run time, and its ending is batshit crazy.
Elysium was much better than this. I'm not sure I have any faith in this dude anymore.
