Following in the footsteps of Skyfall, Oblivion, Tron: Legacy, Titanic 3D, Guardians of the Galaxy, Prometheus, The Amazing Spider-Man, Pacific Rim, Seventh Son, Riddick and I, Frankenstein.

http://www.slashfilm.com/tomorrowland-imax-preview/

If IMAX is the future of movies, they’re really going to show it with Brad Bird‘s Tomorrowland. While the director didn’t shoot in native IMAX, his film will be presented entirely in an expanded aspect ratio when it’s released on May 22. Sam Mendes’ Skyfall did something similar and was shown in a 1.9:1 aspect ratio, which is a quarter bigger than a regular screen. Tomorrowland will be similar.

If that’s not enough, fans who go to see Avengers: Age of Ultron in IMAX will be presented with an extended look at Tomorrowland running about six minutes long. Read more about the Tomorrowland IMAX goodies below.

/Film can exclusively confirm both Tomorrowland IMAX points. The six minute preview will be in front of all domestic and some international IMAX screenings of Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While we don’t know what that Tomorrowland IMAX preview will show, there’s a chance it could be something like they are doing at Disneyland, which is a full sequence set at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York. You can read more about that and watch a video blog here

Brad Bird’s last film, Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol shot select sequences in IMAX, and he’s a big fan of the format (read our Brad Bird IMAX interview here). That film changed aspect ratios from regular to full IMAX but this one will just be bigger (not full IMAX but significantly larger) throughout the entire thing.

Avengers: Age of Ultron opens May 1. Tomorrowland opens May 22. Here’s the official info:

From Disney comes two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird’s “Tomorrowland,” a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.

Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.

The film also stars Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key and Thomas Robinson.

“Tomorrowland” is produced by Damon Lindelof, Brad Bird and Jeffrey Chernov and directed by Brad Bird, with John Walker, Bernard Bellew, Jeff Jensen and Brigham Taylor serving as executive producers. “Tomorrowland” opens in U.S. theaters on May 22, 2015.

It builds to an awfully weak climax. Add to that when we figure out what's going on we're like "awe really?". Very disappointing. Espcially since the first 30 - 45 minutes are great.

Loved the optimistic tone and visuals throughout. And Brad Bird's direction keeps it light and fun, but the script suffers a lot. Damon Lindelof strikes again niggas.

I'm sure the people who love to watch for narrative lapses and who attempt to nitpick every little flaw in a big film with big ideas will find their fair share here.

Instead, I'll focus on the fact that it's a fucking PG-rated live-action Disney movie with big, bold, optimistic ideas. It's earnest as hell, definitely witty, with some terrific action scenes, some great visuals, an outstanding score, and appealing leads.

The first ten minutes or so have a framing device that they thankfully ditch before too long for the rest of the film. Once they cut that out, the movie really starts taking off. There are vague threats and vague histories at play-- again, people who need every little detail of a world explained will be upset. People who take a confidently-presented world at face value will easily accept some of the initially confusing elements as they are and thoroughly enjoy the majority of the film.

Not saying it's more than a three-out-of-four stars, but I've read a slew of vicious reviews from the critical circle. Which I simply do not get. At *absolute worst,* you could say, "Great parts, decent-at-best whole." I suppose I'd understand that, even if I enjoyed the film more than that. Pans? I imagine if you pan it, you either hate Damon Lindelof and went in with knives sharpened looking for the flaws or you don't dig on films that are earnest to the point of hokey.

I let the messiness wash over me, too busy enjoying the film as a whole.

Not the best movie of the year, but it was better than the reviews set it up to be. I get the "standard ending" complaints, but this was a feel good movie for kids for the most part. The ideas presented were fantastic, Clooney and Britt were great, and Brad Bird once again proved he was a force to be reckoned with.

Britt Robertson was a little of a blank slate, for someone who was supposed to be humanity's last hope she sure was boilerplate and too Disney bland. Conversely I really liked Athena and young Frank Walker was awesome too. Clooney did his thing although that's not a thankful role by any means.
Was anyone else slightly disturbed at the masterplan of taking all "dreamers" to a separate place from the world? They did their best to make it sound inspirational, but I thought it was a very grim and borderline misanthropic plan. What happens to those that don't make the cut (aka 99.999% of humans)? There was a very Randian tone about that, although I may be missing something (besides the fact that I shouldn't expect something written by Lindelof too make too much sense)

The plan of Tomorrowland wasn't to make a Utopia and say screw the rest of the world. The plan (explained more clearly in this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-USh0Womb4 that it probably was in the movie) was to free the most creative minds from the pettiness of mankind so that it could rise above. Once this utopia was complete it would be presented to mankind fully functioning to say: look, the future is here. Now leave all your crap behind and join us.

Tomorrowland was never meant to be a permanently exclusive thing, just long enough to get established.

so basically it's a utopia, which while not as ominous as my interpretation, is still pretty weird and very much an elitist daydream with sinister overtones of how little consideration the head "dreamers" have for the general population. I still contend there's a Randian aspect to the plan, not necessarily an evil one by design, but there's a definite lack of awareness of democratic ideals.

The goals of Plus Ultra (Eiffel, Edison, Verne, and Tesla) isn't one of radical individualism, the fascism of might (through wealth) makes right, or the virtues of selfishness. It certainly does strive to skirt the roadblocks the pop up in a democratic process, but no more than it skirts the roadblocks communism, fascism, even socialism to a degree, but with the specific intent of avoiding the political, social, and humanistic barriers to progress and their destructive use of what would be positive innovations. The idea is to imagine if mankind could have spit the atom and turned it into an energy source that could be shared without the warmongers first getting it and turning it into a weapon. It's interesting then that Nix--Hugh Laurie's character--fell into this exact trap, making a device designed for good (enlightening people to the results of their destructive habits) that ultimately becomes the weapon that nearly destroys all mankind.

I think is big key, that admittedly didn't come across well in the movie, was that the goal was not an exclusive utopia where all the riff-raff are left in the ghetto called Earth, but to use that "free time" of innovation to then come and lift everyone into utopia.

The essence of the project is communal benefit. That's pure altruism, not Randian selfishness and self-interest at all.

In one interesting review I read (on Collider), the reviewer really hated the movie and in particular was mad at the overtones of exceptionalism, the assertion that those with imaginations are better and more deserving of special treatment than the rest. I found that point interesting because of the arguments for exceptionalism that Bob Parr and Syndrome make in The Incredibles, another Brad Bird product. But for me, even that argument doesn't hold up. Partly I guess because I do believe that there are exceptional people--more by action and circumstance than by birth, but objectively genes can't be ignored--but also because the goal of Tomorrowland is not to just steal the exceptional people away from the world, but to free them to do the best work they can for the world.

It's not strip-mining the resource of imagination and innovation out of the earth, but cultivating and refining it for the benefit of all man.

Absolutely there are all sorts of arguments and disagreements one can have about their goals, methodology, or likely results of their actions, but I think that the intentions of Plus Ultra are undoubtedly (and clearly with the context of the animated video) benevolent.

the way i took it was like a noble Manhattan Project. it just so happens that they were not whisked off to nevada, but some place even more remote (and distraction-free).

there's certainly an elitism at work here. who picks the 'best and brightest'?

if anything, it's kind of a mixed bag take on a failed utopia... where man's ambitions and the possibilities of our best selves are dragged down by the gravity of our sinful (or, for non-christians, at least, self-interested) nature.

central to it all is a ride in disney world which is the centerpiece of the actual Tomorrowland -- The Hall Of (The Future? Innovation? some shit).

it is a throwback exhibit showing, basically, how great technology and advancement are. gee whiz type shit that hearkens back to the spirit of the World's Fairs (sans dealing with the endemic racism, sexism and other isms that pervaded western society of the time).

the ethos of Tomorrowland (the ride / attraction, as well as the Plus Ultra group in the movie) is oh gee, golly gosh wow, we can make such great and cool stuff, i bet, if we get enough smart people in the same room, we can fix ANYTHING!

and in the movie they let that play out and then posit a 'what if?', pondering the impact on such a well intentioned system of creative elites and the administrative technocrats who give them direction, of a depressing string of failures to resolve our deep-seeded real-world problems.

over time, then, you see this erosion of idealism, and once this rather pessimistic, literal doomsday clock idea becomes real, the focus is then, well, if we can't save everybody, who can we save? and if ppl don't WANT to be saved (our current cultural shrug toward endemic social and environmental and political and social problems), THEN WHAT?

fuck 'em, is the official stance, as codified by the governor.

and so the plot is to rescue the original spirit of idealism from the corrupted, fallen thing that has been created in its place.

that's really not a right / left thing. you could argue that both democracy and communism have failed and fallen short of their ideals in similar ways.

so on that philosophical and intellectual level, the film had some good food for thought. unfortunately, they had more holes in the plot than Portal 2. i was able to shrug that off, however, and think about the big picture. so from that standpoint, i'm w/ frank, and would give it a 3 or so. i'm not mad at this flick at all, and quite enjoyed a good bit of it.

peace & blessings,

x.

This film is all about the journey and it is a fun kinda wacky trip. Tommorland has a good message about the responsible use of technology.
I really enjoyed this movie.
