i could see this falling through the box office cracks 'cause the concept is kind of difficult to sell, but i hope it finds an audience. really heartfelt, really funny, the voices are actually really well cast (lewis black, mindy kaling, i think phyllis from the office) and not just a bunch of celebrities lining up for an easy paycheck.

kind of reminded me of where the wild things are (which i loved), where it's not so much a kids movie as it is a movie about kids, specifically their emotional life. this one is definitely a kids movie though, it just strikes a really strong balance of being for adults as well. go see it.

Really loved this despite being such a rip off of Herman's Head. Also the short before is really sweet and fun. Saw it at 10:30pm with all adults and they broke out into applauds after both the short and the film. I put it up there with Wall-E and Up.

man I thought this was going to be a story about a young girl going through puberty and dealing with those emotions. It got a bit darker than that. But damn it was real as hell. really loved how they set it all up with the memories ,islands, core thoughts, etc. I almost cried there towards the end. Great flick. Really really good.

really great for kids & grown ups. i laughed alot.

this was one of the more educational films i can remember seeing.

for folks that don't understand how depression works, this movie should be mando.

& i love the sound efx in this. really felt like i was inside the main character's head as the thoughts (marbles) plunked through her long / short term & down into the subconscious.

It almost got TOO depressing in the middle, thought a good 10 min could have been taken out...

Still 1 of the better Pixar movies, Lewis Black/Anger had me rolling almost every line... I would've liked a little more time in other peoples heads, that little rundown during the credits was hilarious

Sadness was kind of annoying which is true IRL lol. Just won't stop fucking with stuff.

I cried when Bing Bong evaporated. The boyfriend from Canada bit was hilarious too. And I loved in the credits they examined the other minds.

I love a movie that makes me think. And want to create. Just really well done.

...its an interesting theory that we are simply the sum not of our experiences, but our emotional reactions to them

...it was "interesting" how one bad experience could so easily destroy what were supposed to be core for the girl

...anyone notice how for the girl her "lead" emotion was joy, for the mom it was fear and for the dad all his emotions were just variances of anger?

...if gigolo dude was Brazilian (according to the mom's memory), how come the teacher said he was from the Caribbean?

...NOBODY questioned the little girl and allowed her to buy a bus ticket with her mother's stolen card?

...ranking-wise i would put this equal to brave at the bottom of the Pixar list

then again, a bus company where they just randomly let you out on the sidewalk (a child even) obviously doesn't have the tightest procedures

also, after buying the ticket, did she put the card back?

how did she plan (yeah I know) to eat on a bus ride from SF to MINN?

one bad experience does seemingly signal the end of the world for immature people. but later we see one of Riley's core islands instantly rebuilt with one good experience.

Mom's lead emotion was actually sadness and Dad had the full range of emotions, but anger was just in the lead. the bus driver was the one with all anger.

the "Brazilian helicopter pilot" was just a grown-up variation of Riley's "perfect boyfriend"

you can buy a bus ticket for someone else

she clearly didn't plan *anything* about the bus trip cuz she was acting out of pure anger

my core memories, what memories have I forgotten about forever, how do my emotional reactions to core memories shape the person I am, what events in my life may have caused me to lose an "island", etc.

It was also one of those movies that made me want to be a better parent - just thinking about my two sons and their memories and how they will be shaped by them. My 7 year old loved the movie too.

Remember when the cleanup crew kept throwing the memory for the chewing gum jingle in the chute?

Why didn't Joy just send the core memories through that thing? It would've gone straight back to HQ where someone could've figured out how to put them back.

She did try to get into the chute at one point (and left sadness behind) but it got disconnected, remember?

the small chute would've sent the memories back and Joy could've just focused on dragging Sadness to the train.

I know I know......it's a cartoon.....but still.

Went to a 5pm showing.

Didn't get to the movie until 5:27 with all the fucking previews and the Lava short.

Didn't like the Lava short much, it was okay. Sounded like Michael Franti wrote a kid's novel.

After seeing the movie I can't imagine how you'd get an 8 year old to sit still - this was a 12+ movie. Really surprised it made $200 million so far.

Did we cry? Yes.

The dream sequence was hilarious.

Richard Kind as Bing-Bong stole the show.

That was exactly the kind of house you get when you move to San Francisco.

The bus driver's inner emotions sequence was the most accurate.

A few kids talked during the film (expected) but someone's dad fell asleep and was snoring loud as hell for the last 20 minutes.

probably my favorite movie so far this year
But it might be over the head of all kids under 16/17

Probably the headiest (no pun intended) mainstream animated film we'll ever see

questions that really showed me that he understood the meaning behind it - he was asking me about what to do when it's hard to be happy, and we talked about how it's okay to be sad, and that he can always tell us how he is feeling.

Even if he didn't get all of that, Pixar did a great job of having this film be multi-layered - if younger kids don't get the real life implications of the emotions not working properly they take it at face value as they follow Joy trying to make it back to headquarters. There were kids of all kinds of ages at our showing and they were all in.

The one scene that would be a bit tough for younger kids was Bing Bong's sacrifice. That ish was tough on ME.

Easily in my top three Pixar films ever. Such great balance with humor and emotion throughout, and Phyllis Smith was PERFECT casting as Sadness.

And Bing Bong's sacrifice set the stage, but that moment when Riley finally took a *breath*... cot damn. Honestly teared up a bit right there.

Would definitely pay to see this again.

For fun, here's an unscientific graphic showing the complex emotions when you combine the five "basic" ones:

like with a therapist when they open up your emotional wounds or something. lol. my parents never divorced but there were some close calls. even moving to a new place, those feelings she felt, I could really relate.

the way they made emotions in visuals and characters was absolutely brilliant. some good humor thrown in here and there. overall one of my favorite pixar movies.

I remember not liking Up but it got better the more i watched it. while i was watching this movie i was wondering , are kids really gonna get this. Ok for example fdmdmbber the trip through Abstract, Joy, Sadness and Bing started deconstructing into colors and shapes. lol I was like damn this is supposed to be a kid's movie. Inside Out it is okay I just did not think it was great. I loved Bing Bong. I want a Bing Bong movie.
