"Anyone watching You're The Worst?"

It comes on right after FX other new show "Married", but I find it funnier.

It's basically two despicable people meet, sleep together, but they're scared to take it any further. Even though they're both assholes, I feel like their relationship is pretty realistic compared to most tv romances. I'm curious to see how long they can keep them at odds with each other because that seems like the point of the show.

I like the cast, the British guy is pretty funny. Paul Reiser has been added. The female lead does PR for some rappers who seem to be modelled after Odd Future. Mona Lisa from Parks & Rec and Brett from Eagleheart.

Jenny Slate, Brett and Paul Reiser are all on "Married". So they might have the better cast, but I do enjoy the two leads on YTW better; Nate Faxon is good and the wife is cute, but kinda annoying.

I've watched all three episodes of YTW and only two of Married. I liked the 1st ep of YTW better than Married, but I enjoyed the 3rd eps of both about the same. The scene in the doctor's office was pretty funny on Married.

Way more risque than I expected. Haven't seen the next episode but the pilot was interesting enough. I hope they push the assholishness more because they didn't seem THAT bad in the pilot. I think both You're the Worst and Married seem like they are trying to replicate Louis and The League but aren't going as far (at least, not as far in the pilots.)

Married's second episode was disappointing IMO but I'm still gonna watch.

Quite likely heading towards an actual plotline about depression on a sitcom. That is extremely risky.

This is my favorite show on TV right now, and I'm fascinated and kind of nervous to see how this shakes out.

The only mis-step of this show last season was trying to make that back seat sex scene a huge bummer *and* insisting on featuring her boobs.

They are fully incompatible with sadness.

There are so many tv shows with gorgeous women I lust after, but she's just N-E-X-T level and I don't even tend to like women like her.

Some of the peripheral characters like Sam (obviously modeled after Tyler) are becoming incredibly obnoxious.

Love Edgar, he's the heart of the show and generally great whenever he's on screen.

Kether is really fantastic, and worth the price of admission.

Aya Cash is cool, she does her job and Chris Geere is pretty great.

Really enjoy this one.

But the Gretchen has honest-to-god depression thing seems to be happening for real.

Shit is honest, and sort of depressing in a way that most people will never see.

I mean Linds is crazy right, but that whole frozen condom thing was insane. Sad all at the same time.

Watching this makes me think of that Friends episode where Monica and Chandler lied to a woman giving up her baby for adoption in order to get her baby. And it wasn't a point for reflection on the characters, because it was assumed they were good and alright people because it was their show.

This is probably overblown, but that was a low point in television for me.

You're the Worst has somehow gotten funnier while digging all the way down into these awful, broken weirdos. And the characters are heightened, not compromised. Sneaking out of the house in the middle of the night to cry in your car is some real life shit. And they got Gretchen's kind of explain-it-away perfect and Jimmy's almost-gets-it look of concern before skipping away obliviously, just happy that he's not being cheated on smile was perfect too.

And Lindsay... jesus with the condom (and the "banned from the equestrian center anyhow" joke almost killed me) and her sad attempts to live independently yesterday. "Paul! My toast is still bread!"

- That perfect way that there is pure and utter understanding of a situation and then just as quick he DECIDES that he's not willing to make the emotional investment to do right. He genuinely cares for Gretch, but he's unwilling to do what is natural and normal. The amount of selfishness at play (except for Edgar) is mind boggling, but its also some folks FIRST though, most just don't act on them. This is an exploration on what happens when you follow that first thought to its conclusion.

I was wrong. He's not oblivious. Or, rather, he chooses that because at least he's not being cheated on. He definitely gets it.

I could see him eventually coming to the conclusion that it's pretty fucked that his girlfriend sneaks out in the middle of the night to cry, and the follow ups (why is she crying? why doesn't she feel comfortable enough to cry in her own home?)

But he's too self-involved for that to sink in right now.

Also, Edgar's girlfriend's rant on men in comedy was ridiculously on point.

With that "Can't I, though" line at the end of the previous episode. But of course he did, because he's Jimmy.

So now one of them is lying to the other about their mental health, while the other is going to pretend they didn't just buy a drink and wait for an attractive bar owner to come over.

Aya Cash is so great.
And Chris Geere and Justin Kirk were really funny in his limited screen time. His obsession with NCIS: LA and Treehouse Masters are great
Only downside was no Kether.

I've never really liked Justin Kirk, but he was great this time. He could have easily overplayed his speech to Gretchen as way more creepy and hitting on her. But it seemed more audience-oblivious than that. Like he just wanted to talk to somebody young and cool.

>Only downside was no Kether.

No joke. I think it may have been smart to keep this as focused as it was. But I'll never not miss her on screen.

Not always the funniest, but the best.

It's ridiculous how invested I felt in this mystery couple's life by the end of the first act.

That's what's crazy about this run dealing with an extremely serious topic. I still laugh out loud routinely.

This one challenged that. But Jimmy freaking out over treehouses; the deadline disincentives; Gretchen's grin running with the dog; etc. all got me.

Even just in this episode, I was laughing at everything Jimmy did while he was in their home, Edgar about to get into a really deep story and Gretchen just cutting him off, even Gretchen's sad discussion with the woman at the dog park.

But this is closer to Louie in that it's great episodes don't have to have a ton of jokes to be great.

I'm having a bitch of a time selling people on watching this.

They're going to break up, I think. Maybe with one of them moving to another city like Gretchen was threatening last year in the three-month flashback episode. Jimmy's response to Rob's "why live out here?" was a bit pointed.

I can live with that, but I'd need the show to continue for another year if that happens. Not so they can get back together, necessarily. They just hooked me with all of these characters and now the depression thing has raised the stakes so much that I just kind of need to know they'll be okay. Which is lame, but whatever. Good TV is affecting.

I guess I'm in the minority but I thought this episode was painfully boring and we're veering into taking White People/Suburbia Problems way too seriously and we ending up with Zach Braffian revelations (that are actually just a sign that the person having the revelation still has some growing up to do.)

Gretchen's "choices" comment makes little sense given that the main problem in her life isn't a choice - she's clinically depressed. That's not something a choice could have changed. As for her life, why is she acting like it's somehow a disaster. She has a great job. She's cute. If she's unhappy, break up with her ridiculous boyfriend and get her own place and start acting like an adult.

At this point, Gretchen staying in the relationship is simply unhealthy. And you can't ask me to take her mental state seriously in an episode and not acknowledge that fact. In the end, i'm not sure how you move on from here without having the couple move on.

>Gretchen's "choices" comment makes little sense given that the
>main problem in her life isn't a choice - she's clinically
>depressed. That's not something a choice could have changed.

But she's still a person in the world and depression still shows itself as a reaction to the world (even if it's not) so it seems like a natural thing to wonder about. And trying on somebody else's life for a deeply weird, slightly criminal day sounds like the kind of erratic desperation of somebody who has already acknowledged she can't be fixed but still maybe hopes that there's something that can fix her.

There's a difference, I think, between writing characters inconsistently (like everything Ryan Murphy does) and writing characters that behave inconsistently. Knowing and understanding depression isn't going to prevent behavior that's not congruent with that understanding. And it's more than just her brain being broken, because as Basaglia points out above - the bones of this have been there for awhile. They probably could have played some kind of mental illness card with any number of the characters, but even before the sneaking-out-in-the-night revelation, Gretchen was:

-rarely sober
-floating through her engaging and interesting job
-overwhelmed by tiny life chores like dealing with package slips and cleaning her apartment
-overwhelmed to the point of panic by large life chores like buying new stuff after the fire
-capable of keeping almost every detail of her life secret from her parents, cobbling together a full fake one

I mean, I get that by "new direction" you're probably referring to the huge tonal shift (though the show has remained funny) but the actual plot shift isn't really that abrupt. It was a show about fucked up people trying to arrange their lives around a function/happiness tension *and* include actually caring about another person. This season has just kind of upped the stakes from a generalized, funny "fucked up" to something way more serious.

And yes to them breaking up, at this point. She has bigger stuff to deal with. But I guess we'll see.

I guess I've had a reaction to the reaction. I don't get people saying that the ending of the episode was crushing. In her depression, Gretchen built up that a couple was perfect and had a better life, she ingratiated herself into their lives, but finally she realized that they didn't have the perfect life. To find her crying as crushing is to buy into her craziness. To me, the revelation was a relief that, while she might not get a positive revelation out of it, she's at least snapped out of the insane phase she was in. If anything is crushing, it's Jimmy's continued ignorance.

But in general, getting heavy with the depression rewrites the entire series for me and makes it far less enjoyable. It's actually kind of fucked up to approach it as "Hey, we can laugh at her depression when it's fucking her life and she's not completely breaking down but now it's crushing that she's really struggling with it." I feel people should look back and say, "Oh man, I shouldn't have been laughing at any of that."

And one of the draws of the episode, as people have noted here, is just how fucked up will she be. Will she steal the dog? OH SHE STOLE THE DOG! Maybe it's me but that shit shouldn't be seen as entertaining. That should be the heartbreaking part; the end is her at least somewhat coming to her senses.

I completely disagree that they had to go here because of the dark undertones. I mean, the fact is that few people saw it going here so it wasn't inevitable and Jimmy and Kether are as fucked up as Gretchen but we're still laughing at them and not delving into the depths of their psychosis. I mean, this is a show that made PTSD a running punchline and continues to do so but now that it's the suburban white girl that's depressed, let's all really take this to heart! That's extremely offputting to me.

And, again, it's not what the show is going for but I find it hard to see their relationship as anything but a symptom of her depression.

This one was kind of all over the map, though I suppose that was inevitable with an episode designed to set up the end of the season and an attempt to return to funny.

They gave Chris Geere the job of holding the whole thing together, which he did kind of admirably - bouncing between cartoonish anguish and some genuine emotion in the last three or four minutes. That the transition didn't seem weird and abrupt to me is maybe due to recently spending an unusual amount of time with my own family.

I think Lindsay wins the episode though.

crazy experience he just had with his family. And she couldn't even give him the minimum. As much as it's understandable on her end, that's still rough for someone to not be able to get any support when they need it.
