'Community' saved! Yahoo orders sixth season

By James Hibberd on Jun 30, 2014 at 5:45PM @james_hibberd

Community fans, get ready to yell: "Yahoo!"

The cult-favorite comedy has been rescued from cancellation by the online mega-portal and content company. Yahoo has picked up the previously canceled series for 13 episodes. And yes: Creator Dan Harmon is on board. So is the full cast. Executive producers Chris McKenna, Russ Krasnoff and Gary Foster too.

Fans' six-seasons-and-a-movie movie mantra is now one step closer to becoming a reality. Yahoo grabbed the opportunity to continue the adventures at Greendale Community College after Sony’s talks with streaming service Hulu fell apart last week.

"I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo," Harmon said in a statement. "I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!"

Added McHale, who on Friday shot down speculation that he could take of CBS’ Late Late Show: "'The reports of our cancelation have been greatly exaggerated.' —Mark Twain (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). #SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real. Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It's the Internet. We can swear now."

The deal went nearly down to the wire as the show's cast contracts expire tonight.

"Yahoo is all about connecting the best creators to the audiences who love their work," said Kathy Savitt, CMO of Yahoo. "Community has an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base who have fought hard to keep this amazing show alive. We couldn't be more excited to work with Dan, Joel, and the entire cast, as well as Sony, to deliver a great season 6."

More to come... in the meantime, get excited: http://media.tumblr.com/3002b399fc3e38436ccca055d1860930/tumblr_inline_mfvjw9lrrJ1raygyb.gif

In any case, hopefully this time Harmon can write season enders that have some weight to them, instead of being hamstrung by the whole "will it continue will it end" mentality.

Does Yahoo! have the dollars NBC had for the show? I'm not snarking, I'm genuinely curious.

Some interesting info...

Budget's the same, as CaptNish noted above.

Cast is the same minus, obviously, John Oliver and Jonathan Banks; and a few writers have moved on.

The cast with be at Comic-Con 2014 thanks to a TV Guide Magazine-sponsored panel.

Although Yahoo's other new shows will be released as a full season (Netflix model), Community will be released on a weekly basis.

The Hulu deal didn't work out due to budget and rather than slash it, we got a Yahoo pickup.

Production begins in the fall.

NBC had one last opportunity to still bring the show back, but ultimately declined; NBC Universal will remain on as producer.

we covered this on the Podcast and my complaint was about the budget, but if Yahoo is willing to pony up and they are doing a weekly release it might just make it.

Also there's word that it may get a film after this 6th season, not sure how true but i'm optimistic that it can happen.

'Community' Trailer: Greendale is Back With a Vengeance
Robert Chan
Writer

https://screen.yahoo.com/community-season-six-trailer-premiere-175500821.html

After Avengers 2: Age of Ultron, perhaps no premiere is more hotly anticipated (among a very specific demographic) than the return of Community. So it should come as no surprise (to that very specific demographic) that the TV show would drop a Community: Age of Yahoo trailer two weeks before the debut.

Many favorite Community tropes are back. Annie and Chang are dressed as Daniel and Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid. Jeff as a white-haired futuristic mayor with a ray gun. Garrett screaming in terror. There are blood oaths, Halloween costumes, and apparently, Greendale once gave a degree to a dog.

We also get to see some of this season’s additions to the cast. “New Shirley,” aka Paget Brewster as Frankie Dart, and “Nobody’s fourth Ghostbuster,” aka Keith David as Elroy Patashnik, who seems to embody Pierce Hawthorne’s befuddlement and Buzz Hickey’s aggressive competence as a computer innovator who’s twenty years past his heyday.

What do you think? Does the trailer get you excited for the new season? Or are you worried that it’ll fall victim to the same gas leak that took down season 4? Let us know below.

Community premieres March 17 on Yahoo! Screen.
