"The Legend of Korra Book 3"

I dont understand what Nick is doing w/ this show. But it premiered last night w/ 3 episodes and I guess its going to pick back up after 4th of July.

The 3 eps were really good though. The creative team has clearly made the changes their critical ass fanbase so desperately desired.

Looks like its gonna be in Ba Sing Se for a minute and the villains look great so far. Especially the waterbender. I wont spoil it for you.

Its worth a look though!

I don't know if it premiered offically

But Episodes 1-3 are out there.

Two A stories seem top be the focus. both intriguing and a result of the fallout from the convergence. Plus the return of a firebender character from the original series

Zuko being alive made me happy.

For some reason i thought Toph would be running shit in Ba Sing Se instead of the bitchy queen.

Im excited to see the imprisoned Firebender chick.

But I still thought I saw a statue earlier.

This season is going along like they don't plan on adding dumb shit that gets in the way.
The 4 baddies are bad ass - and funny and endearing in their own way.
So far, so good!!

awesome to see Zuko still alive n kickin (ridin a MF dragon no less). but still leaves me with the nagging questions about Sokka and Aang's fates. why'd they cark it? i think they're the only ones from the OG Team Avatar that are dead and it's still unexplored territory.
Bolin has been killin it with the funny.
glad the Asami/Mako/Korra love triangle is dead (for now).
bringin the air nation back from the brink is epic and a cool way to tie-in harmonic convergence.
Tenzin rippin off his shirt to show off airbending was a hoot lol.
n ye, Metal City was amazeballs. i'm glad there's at least one place on the earth that doesn't have a seedy underbelly as most of the cities do.
evidently the Dai Li are still assholes, but they're legitimately creepy so it's fun having em in the mix.
Book 2 was slightly jarring but after repeat viewings was some epic shit in its own right, and game-changing. but it's also nice to see how it's brought the entire mythos back full circle with a Team Avatar riding a sky bison from nation to nation. was definitely a good idea to get outta Republic City for a while and explore the new world.

Nick has done a horrible job of managing the Avatar series. it should've been the crown jewel of the network.

I feel your pain tho. If I ain't have this HDMI to iPad dongle, I'd be in front of my computer too. At least now I don't have to stream from a questionable source.

They don't really mean it
If they did have this much confidence in the online presence they would have announced season 4
Along with other new shows they gave planned for all this wonderful web bonanza

We are just supposed to be grateful they didn't outright cancel the show because they can't figure out a way to profit off the show with toys and kids because too many adults and girls are watching

Along w catching up on young justice and the clone wars

I missed that in the piece but just read it elsewhere
I have little faith in these folks

I didn't know about the leak either

"The low ratings are certainly not due to a dip in the show’s quality—The Legend Of Korra has been better than ever in Book Three—but are instead attributable to Nickelodeon’s handling of the season after unforeseen developments like the leak of episodes three through six by the network’s Mexican affiliate MundoNick. This leak forced the network to rush the new season on the air, announcing the season premiere a measly week before it debuted, and bunching episodes together to burn through the leaked chapters."

http://www.avclub.com/tvclub/legend-korra-enemy-within-207385

And the article said nothing about season 4
Maybe I misread what exactly you're implying about what the article stated?

The hits keep coming.
Fucking lava.
Will the White Lotus be the cavalry?
When Beifong put her hand on Su's shoulder upon realizing - versus snapping on her, which I kind of expected, I felt that a little.
Bolin keeping up his MVP status.
Fully expected the tea to be drugged.
Su sending Team Avatar off could still be part of a trap.
The WHOLE KIDNAP SEQUENCE was awesome!!
The fact no one in the NICK audience watches this show lets me know kids are stupid.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

Did anyone else see it yet?! Fantastic ending, and it left a lot open for the next season. This series keeps adding beautiful homages to past characters and I love it. It took me a while to warm up to Korra, but I see her growth and the trajectory is different from Aang's. One could argue that hers has been more traumatic, but maybe that's because she didn't have the same humble spirit as Aang did. I would love to see her reconnect to her past lives.

Fuck nickelodeon for screwing the avatar franchise over.

Su got her ass, too. Did they even show an explosion? I guess suicidal decapitation is just too far. I like how for the 3-eyed characters, they have only been defeated by teamwork and cunning. I don't like everything to be a bend-off.
Who was the lady that nursed helped korra's dad? She wasn't familiar to me and I'm wondering if she was a red lotus operative. This season was fantastic. I'm gonna watch it again tonight

...how damn unbeatable these motherfuckers were?
I'm hoping this will be the explanation for Korra's practically comatose state and tear.

Tenzin's an air MASTER. Why was Zaheer able to hold any ground against him?
It took all those people to take out 4?

The end was supposed to be celebratory, but all I saw was a bunch of weak people...unless that's some kind of hidden sociological message to us working class suckers.

I have a feeling next season will be Korra on her own for a while on some kind of discovery before seeking out the Red Lotus.
How can she be the Avatar if she can be so easily defeated?
Even the Avatar state was barely enough!
I think she's going to seek strength, then revenge and wiser heads are going to have to talk her down.

I found my body tightening while watching these episodes.
Excellent season.

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

In Korra's defense, she's been traumatized and manipulated in every book. Mostly, that's because she's bull-headed and naive, but she has been sheltered. Korra is sort of a rube, and was never ready for all of the sophisticated political plots leveled against her. As a prodigy, she was never able to separate her identity from being the avatar (unlike Aang). She embraced the power, but not so much the responsibility. Any threat to losing that power, and she panics and tries to punch her way out.

>
>Tenzin's an air MASTER. Why was Zaheer able to hold any ground
>against him?

I thought Tenzin handled him well, until Ghazan and Ming Hua helped gang up on him. But I also think Tenzin underestimated Zaheer. I didn't like how Zaheer just immediately became a superior bender after getting his powers. It's one thing to study the art, but to be able to implement it like that? But I do understand they have to condense.

>It took all those people to take out 4?

The Baddies were much more efficient/skilled in fighting as a unit. Team Avatar has gotten better at it, but they don't train or practice. I imagine the red lotus society has. Those four are also exceptional benders with rare powers against mostly average benders.

Yikes, LOL. Maybe it's a nod to PTSD? Korra is once again left to despair in losing her identity. It sucks ass being a teenager.

Yes to most of this. I think Korra is easily defeated because she's out of her league for these new enemies. Power isn't the only thing she should be relying on and Korra has repeatedly been outsmarted. Once again, she has to be stripped of those powers in order to learn her very special lesson. This season was by far the best, imo.

>How can she be the Avatar if she can be so easily defeated?
>Even the Avatar state was barely enough!

I found myself watching that battle closely because we saw on several occasions in the last series the folly of tempting the Avatar State. I was particularly comparing it to the Aang-Ozai battle which, once Aang hit the Avatar State, was mainly a hilarious montage of Ozai fleeing for his ever-loving life.

Korra and Zaheer's battle was very similar in the beginning, though without the "I dun fuked up now" look that was all over Ozai's face. There are some important differences though:

While Korra has had more time to properly train the four elements than Aang, hers has been school training where Aang's was real life/practical/combat training. Not dismissing Korra's innate passion and aggression, at the time of the Ozai fight and for the purposes of combat, Aang might have been a little better master of the elements than Korra (except fire for which he had the benefit of Sozin's Comet to make up for his lack of fire mastery).

More importantly, Aang had a much better connection to his spirit than Korra, likely making his Avatar State a lot more powerful than hers. All Avatar State's probably aren't made equal.

Most importantly, Korra was fighting poisoned. And not I'm going to be sick poisoned, but I'm going to die poisoned. She was fighting Zaheer while dying, so we probably weren't seeing her best Avatar State.

So I wouldn't say that the Avatar State was barely enough because I think it was a severely handicapped Avatar State.

As for the Tenzin/Zaheer fight, I said before, the whole time I was rooting for Tenzin to kick his ass, and the fight turned out to be close to a stalemate. The thing about Tenzin, from my reckoning, is that while he's an Airbending Master, that almost seems to be partially by default. Not saying that he doesn't deserve the title, but he's no Aang. I mean, part of the character's arc has been coming to terms with the fact that he's not as good as his father (in lots of ways) and that that doesn't disqualify him as worthy of being an Airbending Master and his father's son. Think about it, Aang, for several years at least and the totality of the time it took him to be an Airbending master (as a child, he was clearly a prodigy), had the benefit of many Air Nomads, Gurus, and a generally more spiritual world to learn from. Tenzin only had Aang. So it may not be fair to compare Tenzin's mastery to the superhero version of an Airbender (Aang).

Now Zaheer basically came out of the Harmonic Convergence a full fledged, old school Airbending Master. The show doesn't even attempt to explain how, but it seems pretty clear to me that he is. Obviously not everyone who gained Airbending started at the same level. Kai was much superior to Bumi. So the show establishes the pattern, at least, that not everyone starts as a complete novice Airbender. Beyond that, it's speculation.

You can speculate that the considerable focus, discipline, spirituality (projecting into the spirit realm isn't an Airbender ability), and sense of purpose that Zaheer had before Harmonic Convergence translated into his Airbending mastery. But I think clearly Zaheer is some kind of unqualified badass. Think about it, his crew was an armless waterbender, a combustionbender, a lavabender, and a spiritbender (Unalaq). He headed up a pretty unique and powerful group. What could he do before he got Airbending that earned their respect, allowed him to hold his own in that company, and got him locked away at the top of a mountain? I'm curious to know.

...you should consider that he had to swallow a big bite of humble pie to come to terms with the fact that his own daughter was far stronger, on multiple levels, than he wanted to admit. That manifested in a lot of limiting behaviour.

On the flip side, as we got to know Zaheer, everything about him was about that clarity of purpose and getting to the next level. Once all bonds were severed he was able to connect that purpose to his abilities at a level no one expected.

Well, there is a reason that they were locked away in specialized prisons and separated.

Zaheer didn't get a single shot in on Tenzin. Zaheer was on the defensive the entire fight. He wouldn't have stood a chance against Tenzin if not for the fact that they outnumbered him.

Korra was poisoned and a healthy Korra in her avatar state would have probably killed Zaheer. We also have to take into account that this avatar isn't as powerful as the previous ones due to the events of last season.

I just watched an interview with Mike & Brian. They said the story behind Zaheer is that he was a master martial artist prior to this. So theoretically a master should be able to take any thing they have and use it as a weapon (similar to a broomstick in the hands of Jackie Chan). So Zaheer was deadly anyway (they pointed out the artistic drawing of his ears, to show he had seen his share of battles). When he received the gift of bending, that was used as an extension of his combat skills. Additionally, because Zaheer was such a spiritual person, he was much more receptive to his new abilities, unlike the other new benders. My favorite detail was their thoughts on Zaheer's spirituality: that he was a highly spiritual person despite his being a villain. They explained that spiritual qualities are not relegated to "good" characters.

There was also a mild spoiler for season 4. I'll link the vid up in a few.

That was something I liked about the big 4 - they weren't twisting mustaches.
I kind of agreed with Zaheer on some points.
Their humor made them more interesting, like Zaheer kissing combustion eye girl (new Prince band) and lava guy commenting.
Or Bolin chatting with them when being kidnapped.

Also, that explanation makes sense, but I'm on the fence about when interviews tell me things that fill in actions of a show. I appreciate the info, but...
Like when I read a Sepinwall interview with a showrunner and he writes that "X happened to X because of something that happened off screen 2 seasons ago."
It makes sense, and adds to what I saw, but why am I learning about that this way?

I have a 400 year old chip on my shoulder.

You don't do it with the intention of making everybody understand it. You do it because you have something to say how you want to say it. I'm not going to expect everybody to get what I'm doing, and you shouldn't expect me to give you everything.

It's art, sure, but it's not Jackson Pollack.
It's art, but more specifically, it's storytelling. If you fail to include details important to your story, you've failed to some degree at that storytelling.

So, is it a failure of storytelling that we don't know Zaheer's mom's maiden name? No. That's not an important detail.

But, that's it's not clear how he became so instantly and uniquely badass with Airbending upon gaining that ability can easily be argued as a failure of storytelling. His badassery with Airbending is central to many, many conflicts in Book 3.

It so happens that, when we search outside of the story, we find that he was not so instantly badass, he came with a lot of badass that he'd developed previously. And while that's certainly inferrable from subtext, I think it's a very valid argument to make that his badassery is so central to the character and story that it deserved better treatment than subtext.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I wasn't particularly bothered by the vagueness, but to say, "it's art, there are no rules, so...whatever," ignores the responsibility an artists has to the audience that he or she is trying to reach.
