From novelist Dennis Lehane comes a screenplay from an original short story of his which appears to be being turned into a novel, no not the other way around. I like the films which have been made of his books Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone and Mystic River but none have been great. I think Mystic River is the best of the three.
Tom Hardy is becoming the rare actor where you need to see every film he is in. This is also the final role acted by James Gandolfini before he died. Noomi Rapace and Matthias Schoenaerts will out the excellent cast.
It's being directed by Belgian Michaël R. Roskam. His previous film was Bullhead (2011) which was nominated for Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars.
I really, really liked this. I went in knowing there would be a twist at the end, and still didn't see that one coming. It wasn't as big of a shock as Shutter Island, but it was still a good one, and I thought the build-up to it was really well done. My heart was racing during "the scene."
And Hardy's range is among the best I've ever seen. He was SO believable as the kinda-dumb, rough, good-hearted former Mafia kid. Really enjoyed him and Gandolfini work together.

Movie was better than I expected too, for once the trailer did its job not spoiling/over-selling Cinematography was very solid, loved the tight close-up on Hardy's face during the scene where he shows up at Deeds' spot.

They did a great job of building the suspense, I was squirming because I expected to see the puppy killed after almost every scene.
Hardy's character seemed almost mentally challenged, I was expecting something like how it ended, but it still caught me by surprise. I was disappointed he let the girl live, cause he seemed cold and calculating and the type not to leave any loose ends. Too sugary in that final scene.
I was surprised at how many laughs it got out of the audience, cause it was a dark, slow paced film.

Is it particularly important to the movie's plot that it takes places in Brooklyn? Book is set in Boston, and it's decently important to providing a back-drop for the action. Without seeing the film, moving the locale to Brooklyn seems kind of odd and arbitrary.

Bob seemed so "slow" that it was distracting. I guess he was like that to set up the reveal at the end. The end did explain a lot, like why he didn't do communion and why Marv said no one made him nervous.
I did like the Marv and Eric characters well enough. I can just see it working better as a short story because it seemed like something was missing.

This has been number one on my list to see since I made this post back in June.
It has its issues and struggles and I think that is because it was originally a short story. As someone else suggested the Cousin Marv and his sister Dottie part just seemed tacked on and unnecessary. Out of the four main actors I thought Gandolfini was the least effective and perhaps wasn't challenged enough by his role.
Noomi Rapace should have had more to do or at least more of a back story with Eric should have been shown. Matthias Schoenaerts was outstanding, he's going to have a big time break out soon. I know he is in the upcoming Far From The Madding Crowd film.
I don't know whether it needed all the double crossing at the end, not that it got complicated but it could have been kept a bit more simple. The plot swerves were well disguised.
I doubt we see any nominations for Hardy but this is the type of role and performance which will help get him higher profile roles.
Loved the tension for the first 2/3s of the film and hat-tip to Roskam for his directing. Hope this leads to further Hollywood work for him but he should be able to take on any project he likes now whether in Europe or U.S.

and the late James g is just as good. It is a shame that a a great film like The Drop has gotten no Golden Globe or Oscar nominations. But you know this happens every year good shit gets little notice and the grossly overrated films get a lot of props. The Drop is a crime drama with a perfect blend of grittiness and tension with a tad bit of romance. I dug it. Grade A+
I will propably have my best movies of 2014 list by next Monday. lol OK guys, you have been warned. Interstellar, Selma and The Grand Budapest Hotel will not be on the list. Okay, lol.
