"The next great one- Tyrant (FX) Season 1"

I read some preview reviews and then jumped into the first episode. Its your basic premise set-up episode but the "godfather in the middle-east" one liners i've been reading look apt. ITs come along at the right time as well im done with True blood.

...he was raping another dudes wife when we meet him

...he acts like he's god's gift to the world

...he did not like the way his dad treated him, and still seemed to respect barry

...his solution to a bigger problem was to cut off a dude's finger

...he slapped his wife

..sexually assaulted his new daughter in law...

then he got hurt speeding around a mountainside, drinking likka and raping dude's wife from the beginning...

he capable of anything othe than intelligence....BUT...i think it was them dudes they invited...

I was pretty much in from the first few minutes. They didn't waste any time kicking things off and catching us up on all the back story. Great introductory scene of the insane brother, too...tells us all we need to know about him in a couple minutes.

It's mad soap opera-y for sure, but I appreciate that they're not taking themselves too seriously. I mean, when the son reveals his thirst for middle eastern dick, I laughed out loud...they're going for over-the-top and I think they nailed a good balance.

I get all the Godfather comparisons, but the tone is completely different...to me it's more like Homeland with a sense of humor or Breaking Bad written by coked-up B-teamers.

I'm definitely in as long as they keep this momentum up.

Barry's not a very strong lead. He sounds like a brown Jack Shephard. I thought Jamal was great in the first ep, and not so much in the second two. everyone speaking english feels awkward... like this thing should be subtitled, but it obviously can't be since we're dealing with a fictional country.

the gay son story is pretty uninteresting, the daughter has done nothing except tell her brother to be careful.. I know we're only 3 episodes in, but the whole thing is already feeling like the barry character is some sort of savior bringing western values to these guys who are stuck in the 16th century... i dunno... the whole thing just feels mediocre as shit.

they're keeping it just interesting enough that i want to keep going, but i'm pretty much on the fence.

Leila though, man. jesus fuck.

the Godfather comparison. I get it, but it's not as derivative as some yall claim.

its very good, not great yet.

that last episode had many layers

I do agree with Mynoriti that it is strange for the show to be so dominated by English, but whatevs

son comes home for huge wedding for his powerful fam whose "business" he's managed to avoid

brings his unassuming, cluless white wife, who doesn't understand why he wont tell her more about these seemingly nice people

loose cannon/short fuse big brother, bullies his way through life, and drives around cheating on his wife while his boys wait outside (in this case they make him more of scumbag)

dad who runs shit is now out of the way.. older son takes over the business, but he's not fit to be a boss..

on the surface, the son who came home seems like he wants nothing to do with these people but we find out he's more than has it in him to be 'bout that life

pacino beard!!!

fam showing just enough respect to the outsider son, with a touch of "who the fuck are you, dude"

really, the last two episodes aren't very godfather-ish as the pilot... then again, the pilot was the best one lol

i dunno, man.. i feel like this is gonna be an SOA type of show. something trying to be much more epic than it really is. i'll give it a few more. just for Leila, if nothing else

that that was the surface material. Godfather was about immigration, community/family, and becoming (through criminality) in America

Tyrant is about transnational identity and global politics as it relates to Islam, tyranny, and resistance, with a Family that already is

about the wife. that's a huge HOLE in the plot. It's not the 70s Godfather where the white broad could be naive.

She knows who her husband is. She's not being manipulated. It's 2014, there is the internet, how does she not aware of his past or his father's government. It's just really bad writing

AMC and FX really REALLY need to hit some creative writing programs and find women writers.

and please don't put it in the air that this becomes SOA. lord no, lol

they even gave his wife something to do, which was really great to see....almost all the women on the show get played to the left as setups for the scenes with men....makes me really see what people say about misogny on tv...

sooo, dude's son is a grade A jerk....apple didn't fall far....i'm glad they're showing that at least the two younger ladies get that this whole situation is screwed up....

...i also like that this is quickly steering away from the Godfather comparisons...

outside the problematic, but necessary comments of the daughter concerning the country. shit is balancing things very well, in particular because their are not being one dimensional with the rebels and showing the value of their resistance, which is something much of American film and tv fails to do well

the dynamics and stakes of the gay son and love interest are a nice subplot too, though I agree that it's rushed

Psycho's dick not working is a nice metaphor / angle as well

Less than 2 1/2 eps im. Had high hopes, but it just aint doing it. Some soap opera level acting/dialogue, borderline cringe worthy "explanations" and nothings really hooked me. Ill be checking in though, hopefully it turns around and I'll get back on.

http://www.deadline.com/2014/07/tca-when-fx-hosts-tyrant-qa-with-some-of-shows-stiffer-critics-howard-gordon-says-hes-the-series-midwife/

This is an adopted child for me, Howard Gordon told TV critics this afternoon about FXs controversial drama series Tyrant. Im the midwife it came to me and this is what it is.

Gordon came to TCA Summer TV Press Tour 2014 to discuss the series that debuted last month. He was joined onstage by representatives of various groups that have blasted, to varying degrees, the series. 2014 Summer TCA Tour - Day 14They came to discuss the ways in which they have complained about the series and the degree to which they have effected change. According to a network spokesman, some of the people onstage participated in a three-hour conversation with Gordon and others involved with the program which was a very educational experience. Their leader seemed to be Cynthia P Schneider, who co-directs the Los Angeles-based Muslims On Screen and Television, and teaches at Georgetown University.

Tyrant was created by Israeli screenwriter-director Gideon Raff (Homeland) and developed by Gordon and Craig Wright. The series tells the story of Bassam Barry Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn Middle Eastern nation, who ends a self-imposed exile to return to his homeland for his nephews wedding, accompanied by his American wife and children. This leads to a dramatic clash in which he is thrown back into familial and national politics. From the moment Gideon pitched me the idea, I felt that this was a tremendous opportunity to humanize and dramatize the faces behind the headlines that we read about every day, Gordon said back when the project was announced at the network. Well also get to explore on the tension between power and family loyalty.

What we found is and his staff have been receptive to every suggestion we made, said Salam Al-Marayati, who FX says in his bio works as an advisor to several political, civic and academic institutions seeking to understand the role of Islam and Muslims in America and throughout the world. He spoke of cutting to pieces the original script. Gordon spoke of the input from various panelists having been useful and instructive.

Finally, one TV critic said to Gordon, Howard, you mentioned you were a midwife to this project. The mother has left the building. Can you talk about how your vision differed from Gideons?

The reference is to Raff, who was partnered with Gordon on the series but who, according to press reports, has distanced himself from the project, citing his very different vision for the series, according to sources and various press reports. Raff is now focused on USA Networks DIG. Gordon said he did not think his vision was all that different from Raffs.

He seems to think so, the TV critic responded. Crosstalk ensued, in which the critic said to Gordon, So, you think you are carrying out the show he envisioned? Gordon said the series is in its infancy.

This is the way you have seen the project, the critic said. Gordon said hed love to hear what other way this story could have been told. This feels like the only story that could have been told from the premise, he insisted.

Gordon and Raff both had come to TCA Winter TV Press Tour 2014, to compare the story to The Godfather as much family drama as political thriller. If there is a larger theme to the series, Gordon said, it is, What does it mean to be a good man?

David Yates, director of the last four Harry Potter movies, helmed the pilot, replacing Ang Lee, who originally committed to it but pulled out for personal reasons.

Tyrant is among the scripted TV series that has had to move from Israel amid escalating violence in Gaza. Earlier this month, with two more episodes left to shoot from Tyrants 10-episode first-season order, production was moved to Turkey; the move was said to be temporary, and producers hoped to return to Tel Aviv. USAs DIG, meanwhile, extended its planned hiatus by week while the network and producers explore alternatives and discuss them with the projects insurance company; DIG had shot the first of its six-episode order.

In response to Reply # 39

was that Gordon claims that Gideon Raff, who wrote the pilot, is on the same page as him and he was "shocked" that Raff is distancing himself from this show...

people who write pilots leave the shows they created all the time (case in point: FX's Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley wrote the pilot for NBC's State of Affairs and left once it was green lit to series...no ones saying why
but to create the pilot, leave, AND distance yourself from the show because it's shitty and you want NOTHING to do with it and you keep stating in interviews that what you are seeing every week on FX IS NOT the version you wanted or even TOLD to sell the show to the network?

But the showrunners who are running the show claim THIS is what you want to see and are standing behind that?

Something is amiss here...and from what I gather about Homeland, the writers on that show have clashed with Gordon in the past on where to take it and its general direction....

so who knows? But Raff disavowing this show? telling...

...she's going through having to hang around these clearly despicable people....dude should have talked to her and apologized, but it seems that without someone there to give him sound advice, he makes bad decisions.... i really feel bad for her and her family though...i'm hoping her husband turned into the despicable person we see cause he hasn't been getting any, his grandfather dies, and his wife was recently kidnapped....

it was nice to see Barry's wife flex a lil bit...

...and it would be nice if they didn't make most on the non Americanized Al Faheed's look like dumbasses, drunk off power....the only one who seems sorta sane is the mother, but to live with all of that is a certain kind of crazy in itself...

i was getting tired of the upstart guy, glad his dad came back to make it all more interesting...

it's funny that many of the Al Faheed's really don't get that most in their own country want to kill them..without that power they'd all be dead...they live in obliviousness

the standing thing i kinda take as more intentional though (as far as the show goes). he's like a little kid, and just so unfit to lead. thats why he was so impressed and resentful of the sheik.

they're writing her into a "bad wife" corner. that would be a tragedy cause her character has so much potential as a catalyst to mayhem. also for the 30th time, she so fine she deserve better

he tries to kill a guy for hurting his feelings

he wants his little brother to save him

he want's to run away with Leila, but she wants him to be grow up and be the ruthless asshole man he was meant to be, instead of the ruthless asshole little boy that he is

he can't handle that so he runs and pours his heart out to side piece blonde who comforts him and agrees to run away with him to fantasy land, but now that he deosn't need to run away, he just snuffs out plan b

dude's all kinds of fucked up.

i think the writers did a very nice character nuance with him. He's a psycho, but precisely because, like many he just wants to be free of his circumstance.

When he told Barry, I would've given you the damn presidency, I believed him. He was hella happy just to have his bro around helping him out and Barry so them stars in his eyes and ended up in a dungeon instead. fuck 'em

yeah, i guess what J did to the Sheik (sp) really sent Barry over the edge, but it's funny cause J really IS a nice guy, he's just a sociopath too LOL....and i only say the plan was dumb because he was involving people he really didn't know and relying on them for results in what ended up being a life or death situation HE created...when J told Barry that he only knew the father in law for a couple months but J's known him for a couple decades, it really all sunk in how crazy the whole "plan" was...

Hakim was such a bitch by the way. I'm glad he got murked. Also I wonder what happened (or is going to happen) to his wife their daughter Nusart.

Jamal is bordering on a great character, almost there...

I wonder if this gets a season two?

(for the presidency)

I think Jamal was being genuine.

It didn't make that much sense to me why Barry didn't at least bring up the topic of him taking over the throne with his brother in casual conversation.

FOr all the talk about him being this lunatic -- he's also a loyal and loving guy to his family.

Jamal carried the show imo. I cared for very few of the other characters.

Also, was it drunk Hakeem whospilled the beans during that dinner party? Jamal used the old Russian intel tactic of getting your suspect drunk to gain info from them.

he was still shit your pants scared of Jamal behind that shooting range and Jamal was like 'man why you bringing up old shit?'

I bet Jamal asked Hakeem what do you prefer Cognac or Bourbon and Hakeem was like 'Barry set me up man they tryin' to take your crown baby it wasn't my idea you gotta believe me it's about us yo!' Just snitching on the whole crew.

But I love Jamal though and I do believe he was sincere when he told Barry all he had to do was ask. Hell you know he was sincere because of what he told ol girl before he had to snuff her out in the 11th hour. My thing is Barry is a bitch ass nigga because he had been doing all this underhanded plotting and scheming instead of having a real heart to heart with his brother on some family shit.

Barry gotta go.

What i've been thinking about is which direction could they take the show if they took the shocking but brilliant idea of killing Bassam. It'll never happen but it would take the show into the levels of the upper echelon tv dramas of late.

They could then better develop the other characters rather than have Bassam the focus. with great writing they could do some great stuff with the journalist guy, leila, the CIA guy, Molly, and the kids.

FX has picked up the political drama “Tyrant” for a second season, increasing the episode order to 13.

The 10-episode first season run of “Tyrant,” which is exec produced by Howard Gordon, averaged 5.1 million total viewers and 2.3 million adults 18-49 inclusive of linear, time-shifted and non-linear viewing. It was also mired by filming problems, such as a move to Turkey after this summer’s Gaza conflict made it unsafe to continue production in Israel.

“We’re so proud of ‘Tyrant’s’ performance throughout its first season,” said Nick Grad, who, along with Eric Schrier, is the president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Production. “Howard Gordon is one of the best and most successful producers in this business. His ability to combine intelligent, edge-of-your-seat storytelling with events from the current geopolitical climate is truly groundbreaking. We look forward to seeing how Tyrant grows in season two.”

Production on the new season of the Middle East-set family drama, which stars Adam Rayner, Jennifer Finnigan and Ashraf Barhom, will begin this spring with an eye on a summer premiere date.

“Tyrant” was created by Gideon Raff and is produced by Fox 21 and FX Productions. The series was developed by Gordon and Craig Wright.Glenn Gordon Caron, Peter Noah, Michael Lehmann, and Avi Nir also serve as executive producers, along with Chris Keyser as consulting producer and Chris Levinson as co-executive producer. Gordon serves as showrunner and exec produces under his Teakwood Lane Productions, the shingle he has set up at 20th Century Fox Television.
