"True Blood Final Season (thank f*cking god)"

I am excited to finish off this horrible show.

this and Californication are the two shows that I make me pray their own sweet death and at the same time I cannot stop watching.

Who is in to watch this rotting ship go down?

Don't get me wrong, I didn't have great expectations for the show, but damn. I'm hoping there's an angle on the Tara thing, b/c if they offed her in that way, it's extremely shitty to not give that character a better send off than that. More than that, though, I'm bothered at how regressive they've made Sookie. I know they strayed extremely far from the books, but this is too far. Sookie, at this point, has been through too much to be this weak. She shouldn't be groveling to anyone, least of all Tara's mom. I'm going to give it a chance, but I'm going to need the writers to give Sookie more backbone that what she showed here.

...but I can't stop watching. I don't think I've been this loyal to a bad show since "Heroes".

I don't like that new James. The other one wasn't great but he was a lil' more likeable.

At this point Eric is literally the only character that I care about and I'm watching in anticipation of them finding him. I hope Pam finds him soon enough because they were wasting her.

I pretty much want the rest of them to get Hep-V.

new ep was just as good.
im pretty damn sure Tara's still alive cos even TB wouldn't let a main character go out like THAT, an off-screen death? i don't think so. i have zero idea as to WHY she'd fake her own death (maybe her ma's in on it?), but makes more sense than dying and having no one witness it.

so the final season is only 6eps or are the online guides getting it wrong...?

http://www.tvguide.com/News/True-Blood-Season-7-Premiere-Recap-Tara-Rutina-Wesley-1083285.aspx

"Before you think this is all some sick joke or even a dream, TVGuide.com can confirm that Tara faced the true death though, with it being the final season, we can only hope that Tara will find her way back to the show in some way, shape or form before the series finale. How does Wesley feel about Tara's demise? Get the scoop:

When and how did you find out that Tara was going to die within the first five minutes of the final season?
Rutina Wesley: I found out over my hiatus that I was going to die, so I had to keep it in the whole time. It was kind of crazy. I was like, "Wow, OK!" But that's what makes it True Blood. We're in our final season. We have to keep it bloody. Somebody's gotta go! I think they wanted to do that to get people right in there. I was OK with it. I'm sad. It's kind of bittersweet because I'm going to miss everybody, but on to bigger and better things. It's been a wild ride so far."

that's...pretty fucking bad. like...up there with one of the worst tv deaths i've ever seen. i mean she's one of the main characters since the show started. her storyline turns into what can only be described as 'torture porn' for the last few seasons. and now this? she has a few seconds of a visible fight, appears to be winning, then we cut away and come back to a pile of gooey blood n guts? i thought i missed a piece of the ep as i was (as always) stoned at the time. thought my brain created a time jump of my own, but nope lol.

does someone have it in for Rutina on that show or what?

Granted as mentioned above this show is a train wreck its hard to tear one's eyes away from. Yet, since we've put in a considerable amount of time, we checked in....maybe only to check out. It was that bad. I remember Sam running for mayor, dont remember him actually getting elected. That whole 1 human 1 vamp thing.... I dont know, I try to suspend any rational thought when watching TB but it was like waiting for pizza bad....

This season/episode picks up directly where the season finale last year left off. Sam organized a cookout to pair up healthy vamps with healthy humans and the Hep+V vamps were closing in to attack at the end of last season. The show picked right back up with the cookout/attack.

Once Bill ejected from Lilith from his system, every vamp with his blood in their system lost the ability to walk in the sunlight. Eric, as we last saw him was burning up butt ass naked on a mountain. The season ended with the party as the Hep-V vamps were approaching.

I got 20 mins into the first ep and then sookie had a first argument of the season with whichever dude shes fuckin this season. I realised i no longer care about sookies travails. I enjoyed the show when it focused on the vamps with Godric and em back in the day. That said i'd like to have closure so i'll check in each week for (crosses fingers) someones synopsis.

I find it crazy that folks like that story line.

I find Eric boring now, and i love Pam but also feel as if her character has been wasted for the most part when she turned Tara.

But I don't think I could have taken another season.

It looks as terrible as expected so far.

I really don't even give a damn anymore. If that was really Tara's true death...smh. Did not do her character any justice. The writing on this show has been deplorable.

so after years of having a few lines per season Tara's mom gets a huge storyline the final season? And it's her being addicted to V? Wow

50% of the air time is being taken by people we either did not know before this season, or people who joined the cast late last season...

everything about the story seems done before

I thought with a 10 ep final season it had potential, so far, terrible

It's not like they're doing 5 fucking episodes and then they're done. We're 2 episodes in. Two.

There has to be a ramp-up to this shit, that's called storytelling

You'd rather they just started the season with everything in non-stop chaos? Really?

I have other thoughts on what Carlton Cuse calls the need for the big bang finale, as well as the now-annoying by-products of TV Show Episode Recap culture, but I'ma chill

ERIC IS GONNA FUCK JASON this season. i mean, there's no way the queens who write this show are gonna end it w/o those 2 pairing up for real real and not for play play. and Eric is going to top.

it has to happen. this is the main reason i've watched the show for as long as i have. i got in b/c someone told me the guy who plays Jason got naked and fucked in every episode - and that was true back then. and then i was introduced to the guy who plays Eric...and then i immediately wanted to see them do it. and now...i'm just holding on.

this better go down.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.mtv.com/news/1862064/true-blood-joe-manganiello-interview-shade-alcide-dies.

Is The Latest True Blood Casualty Throwing Some Serious Shade?
Shots fired.
by Shaunna Murphy 7/7/2014.

At the end of the July 6 episode of True Blood major spoiler alert fan-favorite character Alcide was killed very abruptly and with little fanfare, when an unnamed, overall unimportant Bon Temps resident shot him, essentially for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He was dead within seconds, and while his demise certainly isnt a huge surprise given the brutal reality of the shows final season, it was surprising to see such a beloved character meet such a shrug fate.

Alcides army of fans are undoubtedly hurting, though nobody has had more to say about the characters death than the actor who played him, Joe Manganiello. Manganiello gave multiple interviews about Alcides fate to several outlets, but one particular sentiment kept popping up in all of the conversations. Well leave it to you to figure out what that is, but here are some of our favorite recurring themes from Manganiellos exit interviews:

On Alcides Importance (Or Lack Thereof)

From Entertainment Weekly:
And if youre looking for characters to kill, its not like any other characters are gonna cry for Alcide because nobody knew him. The only one I interacted with in five years was Sam. There was a bunch of werewolf characters that we never got into. He was pack master for, like, a day-and-a-half. So its the perfect character to kill off.

From TVLine:
I disagree with you , but I think its very nice of you to say that. I dont think I had anything to do with the show.

From E! Online:
Its an expendable character; he doesnt really have anything to do with the rest of the plot. I didnt really ever act with anybody in the regular cast for the last few years, so you know, its sad, but none of the characters are going to miss me other than Sookie.

On The Fanfare Surrounding His Death (Or Lack Thereof)

From Entertainment Weekly:
Im glad it wasnt a vampire, cause I think that might have been emasculating. He hates vampires so much, then he gets taken out by one of them? Is it better to get taken out by a nameless hillbilly? I dont know. I dont know what to say.

From E! Online:
Being killed by a character whose name I cant even remember? I mean, awesome. Im trying to be diplomatic here I dont know, sad. Sad is probably the safest word I can say.

From TVLine:
Yeah, I guess theres a part of me . I just died naked in the woods, killed by some random hillbilly. Then again, Im glad one of the vampires didnt do it, because you dont want any of them having bragging rights moving forward. It would have been great if Id gotten to kill 40 people on the way to my death; thats how I would have wanted to go. But I understand we were pressed for time.

On His Regrets

From TVLine:
I was also sad that Robert Patrick and I never got into any kind of depth with our storyline, showing why the two of them didnt get along. had something planned for us, but unfortunately, it was one of the casualties of the showrunner switch of Season 6. My storyline was completely I mean, there was no storyline. It was just gone. All of a sudden, I was just beating up a bunch of girls. It was weird. I was like, Come on, man, Rocky is going to beat up Adrian now? I dont know what was going on there. There was this really textured, interesting relationship in those last scenes with Robert Patrick that were killed. We even shot some of them, but they were junked in order to make this Alcide is an ahole storyline. It was odd. Comic-Con was weird that year, too. The fans were confused, and I was confused, too. I didnt know why that was happening either, but obviously there was a situation going on higher up the ladder that we all had to bare with.

From E! Online:
I think it wouldve been interesting if they stuck to the books where Sookie helps Alcide become packmaster I think an exploration of his powers wouldve been interesting, smell-tracking, his strength, thinks like that. I dont know, its a vampire show and Im a werewolf, what are you going to do?

On His Desire To Keep Up With The Rest Of The Series

From Entertainment Weekly:
They sent to me. Im still on the mailing list. So I read nine and 10, out of curiosity.

They wrecked his character last season by making him a villain for no reason and in the last ep he was good again. It was dumb as hell.

Then they unceremoniously dump his character with a random shot in the domepiece. They way they've been killing off people this season has been the worst I've ever seen on show before.

how shitty the show was once Alan Ball left and how his character had a way bigger storyline when Alan Ball was running the show and not this bs he exited the show with.

Because in past interviews, he kept hinting that Ball had more meaty storyline for Alcide that never came to fruition when he left....

I dug dude, great body, I hope he can parlay that into decent roles that SHOW he can act...

In response to Reply # 60

Would've been a great story for him, but it would've probably taken away from the overall story. I mean they've focused so heavily on Eric, that you almost forget Sookie is the main character.

There's a lot in there that's just getting tossed to the way side. Sam's character is the same way.

Because it was as if who ever was in charge of the previous eps left the show. This was by the most enjoyable of the season.

Eric is back
Lafayette got jessica to stop being stupid
This ends the stupid story arc of rescuing characters I couldn't careless about
Found out about how fantasia came about how Eric ended up there
Bill is still assed out

I was fully prepared to abandon ship after this week, but last night's ep brought me back in. It's amazing what can happen when you treat your characters like human beings who behave and react rationally or realistically emotionally.

And it reminded me how much fun it was to watch this campy ass show!

My favorite part was the origin of Fangtasia and seeing Ginger. 90's Eric with his Vanilla Ice look was so hilarious!

opposed to just jumping in feet-first and logic-free with nothing but ACTION! ACTION! ACTION! and all-out silliness.

Sometimes the best storytelling is done when shit is SET UP and then BUILT UP, rather than having various "campy" moments play out for no reason, simply because people want the show to "go out with a bang."

But that ain't none of my business, tho.

...cant tell if its heavy sarcasm or ur having a go at the rest of us for our (valid) criticisms? a ramp up? a ramp up to what? they're supposedly in the middle of a war, yet theres surprisingly little fighting going on. i dont TRUST this show to ramp up anything to a logical or entertaining conclusion. that went out the window years ago. now i think most of us are just expecting to be entertained. and not bored.

this show is a series in the vein of ANGEL. same blueprints, but 50/50 when it comes to execution. u can't even admit that? i been a big fan of the show its entire run, sung its praises for season 4 through to 6 when most ppl seemed to be jumping ship (it was a solid entertaining run). but this is episode 4, in its final season, of 10eps in total? and it's the first one that's really been anything *close* to TB's best? that doesn't warrant a conversation? lol. cmon.
i think far from blaming a culture with shorter attention spans and the need for a big finale, some of us actually are judging this shit based on what we see and have seen. and if it's doo-doo, it's doo-doo. no explanation necessary really. sheit, even Alcide agreed about some of the shows drawbacks.

i say this with even more certainty after i been rewatching ANGEL for the 20th time all the way thru recently. TB (and the chick who wrote the novels) clearly used the school of Whedon as an influence, but it was again the execution that lacked on TB after a while. how a show on the WB managed to be so epic for so long on not much of a budget...is just pure talent. ANGEL's the GOAT vamp show and had nary a bad spot in its 5 seasons of existence, cos there was quality control. there was an actual longterm PLAN. there was consistency. the show had something to SAY lol. TB's had a fucking SPOTTY run at best, man. characters have gone through shit for absolutely no good reason (see: Tara. again), storylines introduced (and thought to be important and interesting) were suddenly dropped. and now in its final season, the powers that be have made mind-boggling decisions regarding who dies and how (Tara, off-screen. Alcide, shot in the head naked in the woods by a random...these dont qualify as WTF moments? and they make.no.sense). overall seems like all these changes and upheavals in the background spilled over into how inconsistent the show eventually got/has become. same thing happened on ANGEL, but it was virtually unnoticeable ON screen, cos ppl kept their shit intact, cos the ppl handling the words and the cameras still had a fucking plan (or backup plan).

i dunno, i dont really get u defending this show from criticisms. like, at all. ive loved the run, seen some things i will never forget (Bill fucking his maker and rotating her head 360 degrees while doin it, for one). and when it manages to balance all its elements of action/drama/camp/comedy (see: the formula perfected by ANGEL), it's one of the most entertaining things to see. but there's been too much below average fuckery going on, masked by production value and the fact that its a vampire show on HBO and they can do and show watever the fuck they want. however this season has been particularly iffy due to the aforementioned insulting character deaths, and yes, lack of a "ramp up". TB isn't some nuanced fucking show lol. mofos got 10 eps left (well, 6 now), they need to bring all this fuckery to a head. unless they wanna bow out by insulting the audience too. but its OUR fault, right? lol.

Once again, you guys can't help but make posts about me and what I do, instead of discussing the topic at hand, which, I'll remind you, was that this was a good episode of True Blood, and not that the show and the people running it are above any and all criticism. I included a shot at someone who had complained about the lack of action, and suddenly it's the story of how I'm once again defending the showrunners against message board dog piles.

I mean, Jesus Christ. This is getting really fucking old and dumb, guys.

i didnt launch this argument *just* cos u said sumthn positive about the show (untrue, and dumb). and im unaware if there's been a campaign like this waged against u. im going offa ur two posts u made with similar content (see: overly sarcastic, critical of the viewer with no responsibility laid at the feet of the showrunners/writers/producers). it wasnt just one post and one positive reaction to a good episode (in which u still sarcastically threw shade at ppl, btw) that sparked my rant. the fuck do u expect?

sooo...u AGREE the show can be shitty. and make shitty decisions. yet ur up in here sarcastically ragging on US for expressing said shittiness when we spot it? the fuck is that about? shits confusing. state ur intent nxt time at LEAST, instead of random sarcasm. cos ur sarcasm implies we're WRONG, which we're NOT lol (within the context of this show, however u could make ur argument work for others, clearly). this season, as the rest of the show, has been spotty as fuck. and there are *always* expectations for a final season. ESPECIALLY for a show based on blood, guts and sex. absolutely NO ONE gives a flying fuck about anything even resembling nuance, or love stories, or even social relevance/drawing parallels with real life shit, cos TB has sucked at almost all of that, but excelled at blood, guts, sex and any comedy that ensues from that mix. at the most, its the characters we dig and their interactions with each other, and we totally enjoy it when the characters we dig make decisions that make actual sense. so yeah, expectations come into play. i just think ostensibly blaming viewers (or at least those of us in this poast), is a little retarded, dont u think? how do u expect anyone to have faith this final season will play out with any kinda quality or respect for itself considering the track record? spesh when we've only really had one good ep sofar? (tho i personally enjoyed ep1...until Tara got unceremoniously snuffed like a fucking extra).

at least you've actually explained or at least acknowledged OUR criticisms now. problem was/is, ur sarcasm minus the big picture/context of ur overall opinion, reads like: stop whining nerds, ur not enjoying this becos a story has to "ramp up" and ur not giving it a fair chance to do so. or we lack the patience cos of the current fast food nature of tv/pop culture lol. i think 7 seasons is patience enough. these mofos have had years to get it right, but are still fumbling the ball. as you can see, even the critical of us WANT the show to be good, and when it is, we acknowledge that shit like the most recent ep. but ur comments came off one-sided and it didnt make any sense.

anyways. ima just bow out gracefully of this convo before the namecalling starts. i hate that part. and TB isnt worth the bickering.

No bullshit characters getting major shine finally!

If you wanna give a small character 1 final moment to shine, do it like you did with Ginger in this episode. Not giving a character like Tara's mom the same old bullshit season long storyline that we are in the midst of.

Hoping this season is flashback heavy... more eric/pam flashbacks and add some bill flashbacks

We got some funny Jason and Lafayette lines... Sookie wasn't playing a victim the whole time, only thing keeping this from your quintessential good TB episode were some tittays...

Hoping they can build strong from here

Like I don't think they really fit in at all. I'm still over the way they're fucking up Sookie. Sookie was supposed to be a lot tougher after her grandmother dying and getting fucked up so many time dealing with vamps. I'm not feeling this weak ass version they're rocking with. The Lafayette story line is working for me though.

Also, this was the "Black People on the Show Keep it Real" episode, with not one, but two major "sum my character up"/"I guarantee you some of the audience feels this way about this shit" monologues from black actors, and they were both superb

We're halfway through the season, and it's interesting that True Blood - with this newfound emphasis on character over camp, and lots of talk about death and family - has somehow morphed into Six Feet Under

In response to Reply # 0

And rightfully so. Fuck Luke Grimes.

http://www.vulture.com/2014/07/nelsan-ellis-true-blood-lafayette-chat.html

Selected quotes:

Vulture: Did you ever get a chance to talk to or bond with Luke Grimes when he was playing James, before they switched off?

Nelsan Ellis: I didn't, but I'm completely ... I mean, I can say I'm not going to make a comment, but I just think that, you're an actor, you're an actor on a show that's True Blood, we're all sitting there going, "You quit your job because ... really?" I'm just... I'm over him. You quit your job because you don't want to play a gay part? As if it's ... You know what? I'm going to stop talking.

V: That's okay. I get what you're saying. If you're going to be on True Blood, you have to be open to a lot of experiences.

NE: You have to be open. But more importantly, you make a statement when you do something like that. I did a documentary called Damn Wonderful, about gay suicide, and you make a statement, a big statement, when you go, "I don't want to play this part because it's gay." If you have a child, if you have a son, and he comes out as gay, what are you going to do? If you have a daughter who comes out gay ...? You just made a statement, and it has ripple effects. First of all, this show, it's True Blood, and shit, we get scared when we read scripts! Excuse my language. When scripts come, we're like, "What are they going to have us do this week?" But when you make a statement that is a judgment ... I was kind of like, "Have you met Alan Ball?" I'm supposed to do what my boss tells me to do, as an actor. I can't approach a character with judgment. I certainly can't tell my boss, "I can act what I want to act, but not what you tell me to act," especially on a show where you come in, knowing what it is. I was like, "Okay... I guess?" I just thought that, having just done the documentary, I didn't like what he did because he made a statement, and sometimes you have to take responsibility.

V: Is it safe to say he won't be invited back for the True Blood musical?

NE: (Laughs.) I don't think he'll be invited back to HBO.

You know there's a REALLY good chance you might have to do some shit you wouldn't do in your ordinary life.

Might be bucky nakids, might be kissing a man, might be kissing a lady, or you just might be wilding the fuck out. That's the show, you know that going in.

Don't be that guy!

it seems like some spoiled actor shit and I agree with Lafayette; Nigga you get hired, you get paid, you know what the job was, go fucking do it.

It also makes me wonder if he really even studied the show at all. Eww at the "Never on HBO" tho, I guess he really burned a bridge

I guess there isn't necessarily a big bad villain this season just everyone going to a end point. I'm sure Bill will be on his death bead so to speak close to the last scene and he'll get saved at the last minute. And then the Yokohama or whatever corporation will synthesize Sarah's blood into a new True Blood formula and cure all the vamps and be back on top also it will make it so they are immune to Hep+V so feeding on random humans will no longer be an issue. And everyone lived happily ever after.

I do wonder whats the plan with Violet and Adalyn and ol' dude tho.

the bill/sookie thing can be picked apart, after all the heinous shit he did to her she's banging him 2 weeks after alcide dies? I'll let that all slide though

My only beef with this ep. was spending way too much time on the redhead, a character nobody has ever really cared about, that should've went to lafayette this week

Liked everything else about this episode, and have actually loved the whole season since the shitty first 2... I am actually to the point where I'm looking forward to next weeks

I have a feeling Bill wants to go back to his family. He's been somwhat of a tortured soul searching for his humanity. Maybe he finds it in death and in a reunion with his family. This whole season his flashbacks have been of his family.

I see a lot of people say they are riding it out without interest, and that was my mentality going in, and even moreso after the first 2 ep's, but I've really enjoyed it since

Tara's final storyline being forgiving her mom was cool, the way they got there was weird but I think it's a good way for Tara to go out

I do hope Hoyt/Jessica end up together too, and Jason ends up with Hoyt's girl

I can't wait for this show to end.

Ugh. This Tara storyline is thee worst thing ever. I'd rather they just killed off Tara completely without this vision mess. But I guess they realized they needed something for Lafayette and Lettie Mae to do. It is such a chore to get through this show now.

They should just spin this show off and make it the Pam and Eric show. Have them traveling the world, on the run from the Yokonomo Corporation after betraying them. THAT show I would watch.

a return to typical True Blood stupidity. If that's all Tara had to say, then that was a pointless subplot. Nobody gives a fuck about Tara's mom. Why are they keepind Sarah Newlin if they've already synthesized her blood? And lettign Hoyt's girlfriend go to confront a crazed vampire is the stupidest shit since the werepanthers.

Because part of the reason (besides Jason being a sex crazed horndog) that Jason is so attracted to Hoyt's girls is that she looks like his ex girlfriend, werepanther, Crystal.

They'll mix her blood in there and it'll improve the taste and also, prevent the antidote from being a cure. I wonder if they'll let Bill die.

I actually hope they do.

Yo, Pam loves her some Erik. Cotdamnit she can be an asshole, but her devotion (ultimate) submission and concern for that man is amazing. It really humanizes her. I wanna be loved like that one day.

Hoyt and his girl arguing, she choosing to go along with Jason, then having Hoyt show up in time to kill Violet. And I know that we're supposed to buy that he almost immediately followed Jason and his girl when they took off, but still.

Also, this interview with the guy who plays Hoyt is pretty weird and funny:
http://www.vulture.com/2014/08/jim-parrack-true-blood-hoyt-fortenberry-chat.html

I also didn't mind Bill's deciding to go Florida Evans-level self-righteous on us, mainly because of the dream featuring the black void baby...

Talk about a recurring theme this season.

So, everyone's finding love/contentment?

Lafayette got his boy.
Hoyt and Jessica back together (still didn't show no tittay though!).
Jason got his Betty Draper-a-like
Tara....erm, but her mama found peace...or something *give not a solitary fuck shrug*.
Eric and Pam reunited.
Andy chilled with ol' big-teeth gyal
Arlene Hep-V+ but happy to hang with a vamp...
Sam got the fuck out of Bon Temps

All that's left is *eye roll* Bill and Sookie.

Is Bill going to die defending the gap-tooth fairy?

As long as it's not Eric, I don't give a fuck.

What the blood claaat???

FTR, almost NOTHING worked this season. They pretty much botched every storlyine they had.

Tara's death
Alcide's death
Sam leaving
Lafayette

I don't know if they did anything right. Maybe putting the dynamic duo, Eric and Pam, together for an extended time with the 1980s flashback (and hair!) and the undercover operation in Dallas.

It was pretty on point and thought-provoking. The reviewer felt as if Bill's "suicide" undermined the show's underlying message of tolerance and acceptance of an alternative lifestyle. He said the show made no bones about using the vampires of true blood as an allegory for the acceptance of homosexuality in mainstream society and that Bill's "suicide" was a slap in the face to the rest of the vampires and by extension of the metaphor to homosexuals. I hadn't considered that angle but the writer made a pretty compelling argument.

Although he didn't bring it up. The timing with Robin William's death was pretty eerie. Granted this was filmed well in advance of William's death.

In response to Reply # 0

I find it hard to argue with this list. And now that I read it and am reminded that all these things happened and I opinion of the show dips even more.

http://arts.nationalpost.com/2014/08/22/a-slow-descent-into-hate-watching-true-bloods-10-worst-subplots/

A slow descent into hate watching: True Blood’s 10 worst subplots

It’s hard to remember the precise moment that watching True Blood started to feel like a chore, but a good guess would be Season 3. Halfway through, Bon Temps’ boring, all-around good guy/shapeshifter Sam Merlotte discovered his trailer park parents were entering his shapeshifting brother Tommy in dog fights. This was not True Blood’s first unnecessary subplot, and for all of its bad taste/drama it was far from the show’s worst.

When True Blood’s final episode airs on Sunday night (9 p.m. ET, HBO), it brings to an end seven seasons of perhaps one of the most confounding successes in television history. And, for many of those who stayed with it past the second season, five years of hate watching. Because after Season 2, the show tried to be more — so, so much more — and failed spectacularly at every turn. What was a show about one psychic human, her shapeshifting boss and a gaggle of vampires evolved into a messy clutter of werewolves, werepanthers, mediums, monsters, maenads and, most embarrassingly, faeries (show’s spelling, not ours).

For every scene with Eric and Pam (MVPs Alexander Skarsgard and Kristin Bauer van Straten), Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) or Sarah (Anna Camp), you had to put with Tara and Lettie Mae, or Andy or Arlene, or Sam, or Anna Paquin’s increasingly intolerable Sookie Stackhouse. Yes, the central figure in the True Blood universe had little to do after Season 1 except get herself into life-threatening situations that vampires Bill (her real-life husband Stephen Moyer) or Eric would be forced to get her out of.

Even then, Sookie figures minimally in the show’s worst subplots, which is what makes them terrible. Most of them had nothing to do with the central plot of True Blood and their respective conclusions or lack thereof made them even more trivial than they seemed on the surface. Noah Love and Caitlin Hotchkiss wrap up the 10 worst subplots of True Blood’s seven seasons:

1. Ghost Tara’s absolution of Lettie Mae
Rutina Wesley had to deal with a lot of mystifying character development after Season 2, but I would kill to have been in the room when she got a look at the scripts for Season 7. In the opening minutes of the first episode, Tara — one of the show’s more central human characters — is killed offscreen. If that wasn’t bad enough, her vampire blood-driven dream ghost then leads her alcoholic, religious zealot of a mother, Lettie Mae, her cousin Lafayette and her stepfather, whose name/existence truly does not matter, on a four- or five-episode goose chase to their old front yard. There, they discover … a gun? Tara reveals she buried it there as a child rather than killing her biological father, who drove Lettie Mae to be the horrible person she was. It’s hard to quantify how much the show did not need a redemption story for Lettie Mae, the fringiest of fringe characters. But the revelation of the gun and the explanation of its existence were legendarily poor writing decisions. — NL

2. The Werepanthers
If True Blood is a bad fever dream, this Season 3 subplot is the temperature spike. Werepanthers — which aren’t a thing in any mythology but hey, OK — play a role in the book series, but the show’s attempted nod to the books was more like a muscle spasm. I mean, what could possibly be problematic about a storyline where Jason gets tied up, held hostage in a backwater commune full of supernatural shape-shifting tweakers, and is repeatedly raped by underage girls so their werepanther line can be repopulated? This subplot was so horrifying that it’s no wonder the showrunners aborted it pretty much immediately, then burned and salted the earth for good measure. (It is never discussed again at any point in the series.) — CH

3. Terry and the Ifrit curse
It should be mentioned that while many of True Blood’s characters had either little to do or crap writing to deliver, many of the actors themselves put in pretty good performances. In particular, Carrie Preston (Arlene) and Chad Lowe (Terry) could often transform terrible writing into watchable tripe. Doubtless that is why ex-soldier Terry was given a heftier subplot in Season 5, which gave depth to the character’s previously underplayed PTSD issues. Too bad it was a disaster. In one of the show’s many attempts to get political, the story was that Terry and his Iraq war buddies had fallen under a curse, and that a fire demon — or an Ifrit — was demanding a blood debt from one of the three of them. It ends with Terry and Arlene killing one of the friends to fulfill the debt. But then Terry has himself executed because he’s messed up or something. It’s complicated. Either way, we get to see Arlene upset for a long time. — NL

4. Bill’s Civil War redemption story
The Season 6 heel turn for Bill Compton — who went from being a tortured, boring hero to a naked, blood-soaked vampire god who wanted to eat the planet — would have been effective if the show had followed through with a proper villain’s demise. Instead, Bill is reborn and redeemed, and in the final season of True Blood, the audience is also expected to forgive him by suffering through random, jarring flashback sequences to Bill’s past as a Civil War hero. Whether it’s saving slaves, being an honourable family man, or just wearing a ton of de-aging pancake makeup, these sepia-toned moments do little to support vampire Bill’s constant mourning of his lost humanity. Also, the whole trying-to-kill-everyone thing. — CH

5. Faerie Land
Season 3 ended with Sookie discovering the source of her telepathy and why powerful light occasionally shoots out of her hands: she’s a faerie. The fourth season opens in the faerie world, which is quickly revealed to be a nightmare for Sookie, so she finds a way back to Earth. The whole ordeal takes about 15 minutes and its entire purpose it to push the timeline of the show forward a year. Problem is the faeries kept popping up and rarely contributed anything of value to the proceedings. Most egregiously, one of them slept with Andy and left him with triplets who grew into teenage girls in a few days. Jessica killed two and the one who lived had numerous useless subplots of her very own. Faerie land was the gift that kept on giving the show characters it never needed. — NL

6. Lafayette is a medium
It must be hard being an ordinary, non-supernatural person in the world of True Blood. When it comes to languidly sassy Lafayette Reynolds (whose “Who ordered the burger with AIDS?” smackdown from Season 1 is still a series highlight), the writers decided they couldn’t just let him be his fabulously smart-assed human self. So they went ahead and made him a medium in Season 4, complete with an absolutely cringe-worthy subplot of being possessed by a slave who seeks vengeance for the murder of her baby back in Olden Times. Did this have any relevance to the wider plot? Probably not. Was it just an excuse to get Lafayette to attack people, steal a baby and speak in a Creole woman’s quavering voice? Most likely. — CH

7. Werewolves
I could have called this one “Alcide,” because most of the werewolf stuff centred around Sookie’s on-again, off-again, on-again, then dead love interest played by himbo Joe Manganiello. Most of it was about Alcide’s unwillingness to traditionally lead a pack. One time he was mad at Sam for dating a shapeshifter who was the mother of one of his pack’s progeny. Alcide was briefly addicted to vampire blood. Alcide, uh, did stuff. Point is, he was on the show for a long time and then they wrote him out in the first episode of Season 7 because he was dating Sookie and they needed to get her closer to Bill and Eric to end the series. Alcide had no character arc and the werewolves only existed to involve him, so, great work everyone. — NL

8. Roving Hep V-positive vampires kill an entire town, then threat evaporates completely
True Blood’s final season was a metaphor for the show’s biggest issues, since it opened with a bang then fizzled to a sad wet fart of nothingness. Season 7 established the threat of murderous “Hep-V” infected vampires attacking and feeding on humans, but that was an excuse to ride the coattails of The Walking Dead and its swarming scenes. Curious that the show made it sound as though this was a worldwide threat, with entire towns apparently destroyed (plus, hearkening back to the real-life Hurricane Katrina disaster with the “FEMA HELP US” signs was both tacky and tasteless). Yet, the audience only sees about 10 mangy vampires. Even more curious that these murderous vamps are destroyed halfway through the season, and no more appear afterward. If you’re going to establish a season-wide underlying threat, pay more than lip service to it after Episode 3. — CH

9. Sam and Nicole
Sam and Tara were written into more time-wasting scenarios than any of their co-workers, and Sam’s final arc was almost as pointless as Tara’s. After Sam’s girlfriend Luna dies in the first episode of Season 6, she asks him to keep her werewolf daughter away from her werewolf in-laws. Sam goes on the run with help from a new character named Nicole, who somehow appeared in nine of the season’s 10 episodes but is mentioned just once on the season’s Wikipedia page. Here’s what that page doesn’t recap: Sam and Nicole are thrown into one of the most awkward romances in television history. They have zero chemistry but somehow manufacture a child. At the end of Season 7, Nicole convinces Sam to leave Bon Temps to raise their child, though even at that point her apathy toward him seems as palatable as ever. — NL

10. Tara is an MMA fighter
In Season 2, things were looking up for Tara. She met and fell for a man named Eggs (because his name is Benedict, get it? Oh god everything is horrible), and even though they fell under a maenad’s spell and ate a human heart together, it was tru luv. Nothing says soulmates like shared cannibalism. But when Eggs is shot and killed, a grief-stricken Tara leaves Bon Temps, becomes a buff MMA fighter and starts sleeping with women. As one does. In typical True Blood fashion, neither the lady-loving nor the face-punching is mentioned after Season 3’s first episode. — CH
