What did you think?

Pluses:

-Rachel coming into her own and it looks she's showing she can more than run with the big dogs and may be as good as Mike was at being Harvey's number 2 and then some;

-Mike and Harvey going at it: I'm curious to see how this unfolds over the season

-Jessica getting it in with DB Woodside: yea i'm intrigued but something tells me he's up to something and this whole working at the law firm with his fuck buddy isn't going to end well

-Donna is just being Donna

-Louis and Katrina as the Dynamic Duo in the office is funny to me

Minuses:
-I have a feeling Mike not being IN the law firm is going to run thin and the writers will find a way to bring him back to Pearson Specter

-I see Harvey's going to constantly use Rachel to take shots at Mike and that's going to wear thin

-Louis as comedic relief wears thin

-Oh, Rachel was fucking married dude who's Harvey's client?! SMH

-when will Mike's boss find out he doesn't have a law degree?

overall, a solid first ep for the new season. I'm all in.

Pluses

- NBC needs to look to their sister station when it comes to using music in shows. They should make the music supervisor of The Blacklist sit in with these guys to see how music should be used to add to the show.

- The dialogue as usual is great. Loved the "Am I the shit or the food..." line.

- I love that they are giving Gina Torres more to do and giving her some lighter moments. Her and her fella are already more interesting than Harvey and Scottie.

- Harvey being Harvey is great.

Minuses:

- Rachel was great in the episode and then the final reveal happened and it felt like she was falling back to damsel in distress mode. I wish she had told Donna instead of Mike.

- I love Louis and Katrina but they often seem like they are in a screwball comedy while the rest of the show is a legal drama. I like the mix of 70% aggressive Louis and 30% screwball Louis.

- I know it would never happen but I'd like to see less of Mike. He doesn't bring much to the table, especially with Rachel filling his shoes with Harvey. I'd love it if he was a side character and it focused more on Rachel. His character only has a few things going for him - memory, no law degree, orphaned - and he's already played the one card and I'm not sure how the others will play in his new job.

- They set up a lot of overarching stories which makes me feel like there won't be much time for episodic stories, which I often feel bring out some of the best episodes.

Loved Rachel's reaction to Harvey kinda apology. Donna is pretty much constantly awesome... love her. Also loved seeing Jessica smile, they need to keep giving her and Harvey light moments, they play well off each other, almost seems improvised.

it'd be pretty lame if he of all people found him out after Luis has been going after him for years.

Speaking of Luis, are they really about to play him out AGAIN? they really need to find new ways to use him as a character.

um because he's not degreed and even if jessica and harvey, etc. knew and didn't address it because of his skills, his new investment banker boss would be concerned, that's why it would matter...

he didn't really lie on his resume for this job...dude gave him an offer and he took it...he actually offered him a gig knowing he had no experience in the field. it actually doesn't matter at all unless the new boss wants to be a dick about it on some bullshit. before it was something that could get him in serious trouble...now he'd just get fired from his job on some BS if the guy even gave a fuck.

another ep tonight and the promos always tease a lot but end up being nothing at all really....

I'm wondering how long they'll drag out Harvey and Mike not being under the same roof. I'm struggling to see how they push this out over an entire season...

I DO like Rachel in this new and different role (being Harvey's number 2) but i agree with the poster above who said Rachel will still find ways to get herself in trouble but I feel like the writers are at least trying to give her more to do/establish her as her own person who is capable of carving her own path (and the fact that she stood up to her father last season and clearly isn't going to back down from Harvey *AND* laid Jessica Pearson out to get her/the firm to pay for law school *AND* get her current job is still very much fantastic)....

a few things:

-can Louis win one? Just once?! SMH

-already the Jessica-Malone storyline is already irritating, mainly because she can clearly do better

-i have to admit, Patrick Adams as Mike is oddly the weakest link on the show...even his new Secretary is way more interesting than him

-Mike's new boss: an inferior version of Harvey in the worst way

-this whole Logan-Rachel-Mike storyline is going to wear thin QUICK. Like you *KNOW* Logan is going to try and get with her again, Mike's going to fuck up and Rachel's going to get drunk and run into Logan's arms (and Mike and Rachel would be EVEN since he slept with his ex back in season 1 or was it 2?), fuck and awkwardness abounds...

but im enjoying the show so far...and is it me or do the eps seem way more streamlined/tighter and way better dialogue so far this season....

they hadn't BUT if Rachel and Logan DID go there again, I could easily see Mike be petty as hell and throw the fact that she gave him grief for fucking Katrina even if Mike and Rachel weren't an item...

because clearly the writers make Mike and Rachel fight over the silliest shit for "dramatic pause"....

- every time Donna & Rachel interact it's pure gold... I cracked up when Donna stole her plant

- same with Louis & Donna. Nice of them to finally give Louis a legit ally. It was cool of how Louis & Jessica boo realized they had dude on the ropes and worked together to rattle him.

- I agree with Calico, it's getting old the way they keep playing Louis, he deserves better.

- hope they don't play out this Mike, Rachel, Logan thing, it's already old & this is just the 2nd episode

Yup.

He does. He may not be on Harvey's level of swag, but Louis CLEARLY is a fantastic lawyer who can get shit done. I feel like the writers prefer to just make Louis the comic relief on the show that has an entire CAST of characters who are comic relief (i.e. the entire cast)...so i don't know...

Agreed and dude playing Logan is weaker than Mike in a lot of respects....

i get that he's goofy, but i wish he wasn't always comic relief...his hugging Jessica was funny though

and i have to give credit to the show's stylist, cause i saw Megan Markle in a commercial and thought she was pretty, but not the bad B**** we see on the show....same with the lady that plays Donna...Gina Torres been fine tho...

straight up, they make EVERYONE on that show look good, save for Gina Torres she always been fine.

I mean, shit, Gabriel Macht not on "Suits" looks haggard as fuck. But he slays on the show...so yea whoever is styling them needs a technical Emmy or FIVE...

This was actually Jeff's best episode. The threesome scene with him, Jessica and Louis had me dyin'. The way he was really getting into Louis with the massage. His character is growing on me, and let's be honest, it's nice they actually have added some color to the show.

The whole "Did you love him? Who ended it?" stuff was groanworthy.

And for a supposed good lawyer, why didn't Mike come back at Harvey with, "Well, if someone finds out about me, you're as fucked as I am, if not moreso!" Mike being exposed would kill the firm but it's like everyone forgot that Harvey had skin in the game.

Still, it was a good episode with some great work from Rick Hoffman and, as usual, I love Sarah Rafferty. I'm hoping they put the love stories on hold for a bit. As I thought, I"m missing the more standalone cases. It would be nice to have one of those in there to mix things up a bit.

it's pretty much par for the course on the show for Mike and Harvey to go in on one strategy, have it backfire then have to figure out a plan b in the last 10 mins of the ep. That's pretty much all Louis did, he made a bad move. The fact that he gave Mike the idea to go after someone who has a grudge against Harvey is pretty weak too. It's not like he gave him the guy, Mike had to come up with the idea on his own and find the right target. You can't blame that on Louis. They just always find ways to make Louis lose in the eyes of the firm and it's getting tiring.

Harvey's anger was way disproportionate to the egregiousness of Louis' mistake. It made no logical sense. The writers were just forcing it to create some (more) tension between Harvey and Louis.

Rachel? I would say be disappointed in the way the writer are charting her characters.

She *SHOULD* be way better developed since she's now Harvey's number 2....they got her doing dumb shit like she did in season 1....

IF you (the writers) want Rachel to evolve and make her be powerful/not be the damsel in distress....THEN DO THAT SHIT.

stop falling back into bs character traps with her....

and she's way better than that Mike and Logan triangle bullshit they have her in. If she's over it, why keep putting her character in forced situations where its brought up?

They're taking a relatively interesting and intriguing character and sidelining her with the crap that makes the show not as good.

And Jessica and new dick? Man, what? Jessica making questionable decisions over new dick? Man, COME ON LMAO

I think this is why this episode resonated so well with me because the focus wasn't really on her, Mike and Logan and the B plot of Louis & Donna was just so strong. we got some much needed insight into Donna & Louis and what makes them who they are and THAT made me dig in with them as people. it's rare that they give Louis actual human qualities
so thumb's up to the writers for fleshing him out but they need to redeem themselves when it comes to Rachel. like you said, she's WAY too good of a character, especially with what we know from her family life, it's like they creating drama for the sake of having drama.

There is NO logical reason Rachel should still be feeling Logan. Dude is an a-hole of the highest order. He's still the a-hole he was years ago. And she knows this. But the writers are going through all kinds of hoops to create some sort of drama to push Rachel to Logan. Logically, her character shouldn't go there. And yet...here we are.

THe writers officially don't seem to know how to write the character Rachel anymore or seem to want to...because they keep putting her in the same ridiculous scenarios (always caught between two bland ass White men who really, if she ACTUALLY thought about, aren't even worthy of her time, etc.) and she keeps making the same decisions. And I get the impression that Meghan Markle, who plays Rachel, asked the writers *NOT* to go there with her character between season 3 and season 4 in interviews...and they still did.

Louis taking L's is just ridiculous. He's way better than Jessica's sidepiece in so MANY WAYS...let Louis BE the badass we all know he is. He can still be the comedy relief and STILL be a badass...sheesh.

And Mike *STAYS* being dumb...can the writers focus the show on Harvey? He does stupid shit too, but way LESS than Mike.

Their Achilles heel is outside of Harvey & Donna they struggle with writing healthy relationships. I'm disappointed with the character Louis. One week after they wrote one of the most beautiful stories & gave us some serious insight into why he's the way he is, they kinda dropped the ball and reverted back to making him a doofus. But I got faith cause I hated Hardman but they wrapped him up neatly with a bow & I suspect they'll do the same with Logan

agreed. they struggle with healthy relationships and also realizing that women achieve power and self-worth in different ways.

I love what they do with Donna and Jessica every week....but the fact that Rachel *IS* playing in their orbit yet isn't coming close to either of them in terms of power (though I feel like making Rachel Harvey's number 2 is actually proving to work out in a lot of ways)...like why is she the damsel in distress?

If Rachel is supposed to be this intelligent and powerful woman, why is she CONSTANTLY placed in situations where she's throw in the middle of some love triangle or she needs to be saved, etc.

I just don't get it sometimes...

Dude is too self righteous, but Fortsman would have had Mike doing a lot of illegal isht. Sidwell was an a-hole, but he didn't strike me as someone who would do something CLEARLY illegal. Fortsman would have broken so many laws, a dozen Harvey Specters wouldn't be able to rescue Mike. So in that case, I understand him turning Fortsman down.

Nice to see Mike n Rachael patch things up.

Foreman is a great adversary. I can't imagine they'll dump him after the summer finale.

Feel bad for Louis but his need for validation is what hurt him and will continue to make him a liability. I'm guessing that the firm will rally together to fix this mess but will Louis recover from all this? I think we'll see Sheila again soon.

Harvey and Donna relationship continues to be a strong point for this show. Sheeeeit Donna owns every scene she is.

Yea. We will see Sheila again, but I suspect his associate somehow gets in trouble for this (mainly because the actress that plays her has the female lead on 12 Monkeys, SyFy's new drama this fall so I don't see her staying on at Suits...) and get fired...

>

I am living for Harvey and Donna's relationship, Harvey and Jessica's relationship, Rachel and Donna's relationship and the few times Donna and Jessica have traded barbs with each other...

And of course, Donna and Louis is everything!

I mean, I still dug the fact that Rachel went anted up basically held her ground with Jessica, got Mike's job as Harvey's associate, AND most definitely earned Jessica's respect. So, I hope a Jessica-Rachel mentorship/relationship happens...

Rachel stays stuck on stupid. Donna told her to give him space and what does she do his first day back? Ambushes him in the library. She couldn't stay away for one day? WTF?

I agree with, I think it was Sankofa above, Rachel used to be a smart, semi-strong character, but they have made her this overly emotional ditz. That's not a good look for this show.

I don't think Louis was looking for validation when he did the deal with Fortsman. He usually does, but this time, he really felt bad that he screwed up and wanted to do right by the firm. The problem is, he just dealt with a dude who had no problem breaking the law to get what he wanted. He wasn't read to swim with a shark like that.

>
>Harvey and Donna relationship continues to be a strong point

Donna and Jessica are the only straight shooters on this show. They usually, take their own emotions, out of their decisions. Jessica lets her personal feelings get the best of her sometimes, but she still does a pretty good job of keeping business first. Donna always has that no nonsense, sage advice.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.deadline.com/2014/08/suits-renewed-for-fifth-season-usa-network/

USA Network has kicked off the renewal of its summer series with a fifth season of flagship drama Suits. The order is for 16 episodes, matching the current fourth season, whose midseason finale airs next week. Suits averages nearly 4 million viewers and 1.6 million adults 18-49. Suits continues to fire on all cylinders, delivering provocative storytelling and complex characters that viewers cant get enough of, said USA president Chris McCumber. Suits hails from Universal Cable Prods. There are two other returning summer series owned by USA that are awaiting renewal, Covert Affairs and veteran Royal Pains, along with sophomore Graceland, from Fox TV Studios. USAs new dramas, Rush and Satisfaction, have had a slow start, and the network is expected to wait for more time-shifted viewing data before making decisions. Also up in the air is the future of freshman comedy Playing House, which has been a soft ratings performer but has support at the network creatively.

Louis is my boy, but it was getting more and more difficult to defind him. Right before Jessica said it at the end of the episode. I was telling my wife how Louis has been effin' up for a minute. Even before this Fortsman deal. No way Jessica keeps him around. But you guys are right, the writers will go through logic defying hoops to bring him back into the fold sometime next season.

But seriously, he was right about Jessica and nailed that shit on the head. Good for him and a part of me is backing him in his quest for vengeance. Winter is coming but not soon enough.

that rage he was channeling was excellent...

..i was REALLY tired of watching Louis lose in this episode and was extremely happy when he turned it around ON HIS OWN....i hope in this next arc he focuses his anger more on Jessica than the rest of them, cause they've done nothing but try to help him (recently)....

Harvey's line about louis being family was great...

That final scene between her and Louis was awesome. Fine acting and great dialogue. Louis said what I and many were thinking at that moment. You could easily argue that Harvey's offense causes the greater amount of harm to the firm.

argue and WIN...every case Mike worked on becomes a problem if that secret gets out

...i always thought they should have figured out a loophole and gotten mike enrolled at Harvard part time or SOMETHING...and Jessica is easily the least likeable character at this point...

It's already been said, but Jessica is a HUGE hypocrite. Mike's situation is a lot worse than Louis' f*ck ups and pose an even bigger problem to the firm. The thing is, she never respected Louis like that. He's a good soldier, but he's not the A-Type she loves. That's why she gives Harvey a pass. It's what she expects out of a named partner. So her firing Louis is not a surprise. But man is she cold. She is so effin' cold....with her fine @$$.

I don't buy the thing about Mike not knowing about the key and the order of the coif. Of course he didn't go to Harvard, but dude's transcript says he graduated magna cum laude. He knows all the pertinent facts about his fake transcript. I figure if the order of the coif key is well known through out HLS, he would have made sure to include that bit of information in his understanding of his fake Harvard history.

All that said, It's good Louis finally got a win. Dude's been the good soldier and it's time he gets something.

Although I watch the show for more than her, but she is bad. I've said it before, Suits has the most attractive AND best dressed cast on television. Hands down. Not even close.

Jessica, Donna, Rachel, then whatever guest stars that come in: Scottie, Sharon Leal, etc..

Right! My wife and I got hyped off of that. I love Jessica, but she continued to let Mike work there for years knowing he was a fraud. She can't keep putting it on everyone else. Plus she knows that despite Mike's lack of credentials, he's a good lawyer and saves their butts just about every week.

>and contrary to what she says, she didn't come up with that plan
>until Mike called her out, she was legit scared.

You think so? I tend to think she had a plan in place. She's like Harvey, she thinks of all the angles from the jump. I actually thought she gave Mike the responsibility of drafting the partnership agreement because she was hoping he would find a way to set Louis up. Turns out she just handled it herself.

97. "Jessica Pearson is Why We Should be Watching Suits (Article)"
In response to Reply # 0

Yea it's Jezebel. But, this is on point.

http://themuse.jezebel.com/jessica-pearson-is-why-you-should-be-watching-suits-1682318876

Jessica Pearson Is Why You Should Be Watching Suits

You're probably not watching USA's Suits. Not because it's not an entertaining, smart show—but do you really have time for another legal drama in your life, and one on USA at that? I began watching Suits when it debuted in 2011 because I watch a lot of television and I'll give almost anything a chance. I stayed for the sharp dialogue, fairly unique premise and Jessica Pearson.

Suits stars Gabriel Macht as Harvey Specter and Patrick J. Adams as Mike Ross—lawyers at a high-powered New York law firm. Mike Ross begins the series as a bike messenger with a photographic memory who lied his way into a position with Harvey Spector. Initially, Harvey and everyone else at the firm is under the impression that Mike graduated from Harvard Law School and passed the New York bar exam. Neither is true and his illegal practice of law is, as you can imagine, a major source of drama throughout the series.

The beginning of first episode had my casual interest—it was clever and seemed to know what it was doing. Then we met Jessica Pearson, a managing parter at the firm played by Gina Torres.

We're lucky to be in a time when women are actually getting quality roles on television. With this influx, I hope to see us abandon the urge to refer to any capable, interesting, nuanced woman on television as "a strong female character." In Torres' case, I'm sure more than one television critic has felt the urge to paint her with the "strong black woman" brush. When we discuss so-called strong female characters on television, all we really mean is that they're real women who display a multitude of feelings, insights and reactions.

Part of the reason Shonda Rhimes has been so successful is because she is able to create female characters that feel like real people and in doing so, challenges and expands the representation of womanhood on television. Olivia Pope is smart and strong, of course, but she also has terrible taste in men. Cristina Yang is a brilliant surgeon who at one point gets an abortion not because she was raped or because of a health problem—but because she simply did not want to have a child. Even beyond Shondaland, women like the The Good Wife's Alicia Florrick confirm the fact that interesting, complex women make for great television.

Jessica Pearson is smart. But that shouldn't be surprising—of course she's smart—she's a powerful New York attorney. She's the boss. The joy I derive from her intellect is in the fact that she's smarter than everyone else around her, as she very well should be. She's smarter than all the cocky white dudes under her employment and she doesn't let them forget it. As a leader, Jessica has found a way to be both loved and feared—cultivating obedience and extreme loyalty.

She is a career-driven woman who expresses little to no regret about her decisions. We learn that she used to be married and maintains a friendly relationship with her ex-husband. Yes, a woman who manages not to be bitter over a man. The novelty.

I love that we don't see her torn between picking her kids up from school and handling a crisis for a big client. There aren't any longing gazes at small children as we see the soft sadness in Jessica's eyes, lamenting over her decision not to have children. Because that is not every woman's dream and, most importantly, that is not this woman's dream.

Jessica Pearson Is Why You Should Be Watching Suits

In real life, Gina Torres identifies as an Afro-Latina. Her race isn't ignored, but is brought up exactly as often and in the ways that you would expect. As a lawyer, Jessica Pearson shows an almost clinical perspective on race—largely concerned with how it can or cannot hurt or help her clients. Still, she is quick to call out hypocrisy or a lack of acknowledgment of race from her mostly white staff.

And then there's the superficial. Gina Torres is obviously gorgeous and her character seems so in command and aware of her beauty. She doesn't use her sexuality to win cases, but she certainly lets you know, that she knows, you couldn't stop staring as she walked away. There's a running sexual tension between Jessica and Harvey, with the joke being that Harvey is clearly attracted to her, but that ain't ever going to happen.

It's important to acknowledge and celebrate characters like Jessica Pearson. For every female character with her depth and smart storytelling, there are five Walter Whites or Tony Sopranos. She serves as encouragement and a reminder this is possible for women on television to be just as interesting, if not moreso, than men they share the screen with. Not only that, we already have these women on our televisions right now—we have Jessica Pearson—and we shouldn't have to accept anything less.

The fourth season of Suits premieres tonight.

I really wanted to make the post to put people on to "Suits" and use the angle about Jessica being everything Scandal fans think Olivia Pope is as the hook. It's a good show. No, it's not one of the best shows on television, but they have a lane and they stay in it. The characters are interesting. The dialogue is cracker jack. The cast is attractive and the dress their butts off. And Jessica Pearson is a strong black woman character who should be getting the love that people reserve for Olivia Pope, who IMO, is actually a weak character. But that's none of my business.

THAT AIN'T LIV....it never will be.

Plus, Jessica could out scheme and out maneuver Liv with a quickness *AND* a vengeance...

The first two of Season 1.
Just in how they introduced him, I was scared of Louis
and I thought, "Man, I like his character."
That faded as Louis kinda became the punch line of the show.
Always catching L's, etc.

This first episode back reminded me (slightly) of the Louis we saw in the first season.
He's still catching L's, and doing the Scooby Doo Villain thing of getting in his own way,
but he actually caused some fear in folks. I dig that. Interested to see how this plays out.

In response to Reply # 98

>That faded as Louis kinda became the punch line of the show.
>Always catching L's, etc.

But in the process, he also became the heart of the show in my opinion. I just felt for dude. Not only with him catching L's like Odell Beckham, Jr., but with how you can tell dude had a good heart, but couldn't relate to people and was left isolated.

I am just afraid that this new villainy will turn into cartoon villainy. I know he has leverage over Jessica and the firm, but dude is taking it too far. I guess they resolved that a bit with Jessica slipping a clause into his partnership agreement. So his leverage is weakened. But man was being a dick to everyone in the building. I don't care what kind of leverage you got, someone was going to reconfigure his face if he kept it up.

...i'm down with watching his self destruction though

he's just one of those people on tv that's "too stupid to live"...the way he treated Rachel and Donna was pretty deplorable...

anyway, i don't get wy h's so mad...these people NEVER kept him in the loop and with good reason...being mad they didn't tell him about something ELSE is funny to me...it's a very important thing, but it wasn't something Luis should have reasonably expected them to share with him of all people.... i used to be sympathetic to Luis gettin that W, but they've done a great job of showing us he deserves whatever misery he gets

...and i still think having Mike at the firm at all is a horrible idea...he's a smart guy, he could easily be doing something else...

it almost looked like she was visiting the set and Patrick was like "wanna be in a few scenes"

Trevor really is/was a POS and Mike was right to leave him behind.

Now we see how Louis ended up a senior partner before Harvey and why Harvey doesn't trust him, and why he rides so hard for Mike. if anything those two do stay true to their word.

Jessica is still one of the finest women on TV, there was a lot more revealed about her character but I wanted to focus on the obvious

Grandma was badass, but she stepped back and let Mike find out for himself about Trevor. Mike took a lot of crap and fell on the sword majorly TWICE for dude and he STILL exposed Mike.

good to see Harvey going all big brother and fixing the situation. funny he kept calling them Frazier and Ali after the 'fight'

Didn't love the black on black but loved that sweater.

Another fun episode. Glad they brought Louis back down because that would have gotten old fast.

Adding another two people who know that Mike didn't go to law school strikes me as a bit odd. I wonder if Claire is going to pop back up as yet another person who knows his secret or add a hurdle for his relationship with Megan Markle. (Was there any point to her scene with Donna?)

Harvey and Donna just need to work out that tension they got going between them.
She needs to get another job so they can have a guilt free relationship.

I know they chose not to go there again because she was going to work for him and they knew that wasn't going to work with him being her boss.

But at this point, she just needs to work for another partner (Louis perhaps) or go to another firm. So they can get it in.

That shit would NEVER work. Louis' torch burns brighter for Donna than it does for Harvey. And if Harvey and Donna make it official Louis would officially go off the deep end. For the first time Suits strongly hinted at a Harvey/Donna/Louis triangle. She chose Harvey over Louis as her legal representation. If she chooses Harvey for love forget about it. Louis will go apeshit and probably do something incredibly stupid to jeopardize the firm. Let's see how this unfolds next week. But the is my bold prediction for next week's finale.

Oh and Jeff left the firm. Do they dredge up the SEC plot again now that he has left and has all of their dirty laundry to air out?

'Suits' Boss Talks Finale's "Two Major Punches," Previews Season 5
8:00 PM PST 3/4/2015 by Amber Dowling

Aaron Korsh breaks down the season four finale's unexpected death, surprise proposal and shocking split.

The dream team has officially broken up.

In a season four finale containing flashbacks to when Donna (Sarah Rafferty) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) first met, Donna realized she could no longer pretend not to have feelings for her boss. By episode’s end, she left Harvey to go work for Louis (Rick Hoffman) after Norma succumbed to a sudden illness.

Meanwhile, things were gravy for another established couple when Mike (Patrick J. Adams) surprised Rachel (Meghan Markle) with a sudden proposal, which she easily accepted. Does that mean happier times for the pair when the show returns for an already ordered fifth season? Is Donna and Harvey’s can opener tradition dead, too? And will Wendell Pierce return in time for the nuptials?

The Hollywood Reporter turned to Suits boss Aaron Korsh for answers to all of the pressing questions from the season four finale.

When did you decide to break up the dream team of Donna and Harvey?

Throughout the season we were not focusing a lot on Donna. She was in a lot of scenes and played her usual role as the glue that holds everything together but she didn’t really have a story that was about her. We wanted to make that up to the fans and to ourselves. The writers came up with this idea that Donna would do a major thing to help Mike in episode 14 and it would backfire on her and she’d have legal consequences to what she did. Once we came up with that story arc, then the question was what’s going to happen to her and Harvey? The question was posed, what if they sleep together in the throes of her being really worried? In breaking the story, it didn’t seem like we’d earned it for her to be in jeopardy enough at that point. I am not ready to have them be in a relationship. We decided: how could we accomplish the same thing without them sleeping together? What if there’s a moment when they clearly can sleep together, Harvey doesn’t take it and it kind of pisses her off and leaves them both to examine their relationship. And we thought, “Holy shit, what if Donna ends up leaving Harvey for Louis?”

Does having Donna and Louis work together open the door for a Donna and Harvey relationship?

Yes and no. Donna leaving Harvey in one major sense, she’s like, “I need to take care of myself.” Her doing that could lay the foundation for them ultimately getting together, or it could lay the foundation for her ultimately moving on and getting with someone else. However if she was really fully ready to move on, she wouldn’t have gone to work for someone within the firm, she would have left. So subconsciously I don’t think she’s ready to move on and maybe she is hoping this gets Harvey to change his mind or see her in a certain way.

Was the plan to always pair that with Mike’s big proposal?

It’s basically a huge splitting up and a huge getting together; we thought if Mike asks Rachel to marry him, followed by Donna leaving Harvey for Louis, that’s just two major punches at the end of a season. And they’re different than what we’ve done before. They’re not, is Mike going to get caught as a lawyer? They’re emotional, they’re not really plot driven. I was laughing because it was like, the big ending to the season is, one of our characters is moving 50 feet down the hall. But because they all mean so much to each other it means so much more from an emotional standpoint.

So many people know about Mike’s secret now, has that run its course or will it continue to play out sporadically?

I look at Bernie Madoff and say, this guy got away with something so much bigger for so long, and someone even went to the SEC about him, I don’t know, it might have been 10 years before he got caught. Sometimes you’re worried somebody is on to you, and sometimes you’re not. If you’re that worried all the time you would stop doing it. Or you wouldn’t do it in the first place. It waxes and it wanes. That’s what we’re doing now. It’s diminishing in its presence at the end of this season, but it’s never going to fully go away because he’s doing this thing.

Read more 'Suits' Boss Previews Major Shake-Up, Re-Emerging Enemies in Season 4B

Even though we never saw her, was it hard to say goodbye to Norma?

I just thought it was both funny and kind of cool that this woman that we’ve never met could die, and obviously it affects all these people. It ultimately brings Donna and Louis closer. It’s a large inspiration of what makes Mike ask Rachel to marry him; Louis’ words are sitting true with Mike, “Don’t let the moment pass. Don’t let the people you love not know how you feel.” So it wasn’t hard to say goodbye but I guess you could say it’s a little bittersweet. But I was glad that we did it.

With that gag over and Donna and Harvey split, is the can opener over, too? Are there anymore long-running gags brewing?

Most of the time these long-running gags, when you come up with them you don’t know it’s going to be a long-running gag. Sometimes it just hits and then it becomes a long-running thing. It’s possible we could have mentioned Norma and never mentioned her again. And it’s certainly possible, when I first wrote the can opener, the network and Kevin Bray, our director that directed the pilot, were like, “You have to tell people what they do with the can opener, you can’t just be vague about it.” And I said to all of them, “Are you crazy? What are we going to come up with that’s better than making them wonder what they do?” Having said that, there will always be long-running gags that come out of nowhere. I will say, the can opener, we didn’t break it into the story in the writer’s room. I just wrote it in that episode, it just kind of came out of the writing. That’s what happens with a lot of these things; it just comes out in the writing. But, we do not forget the can opener in season five.

How much does the wedding factor into season five?

When we first decided to have them get married, I didn’t want the wedding to define those characters’ season five. There are some people who are engaged, it takes a year, a year and a half to get married. We do not run away from the fact that they got engaged, but it’s more like they’re engaged and things that happen just have slightly heightened consequences. There’s no that this wedding will impact their lives. We don’t ignore it. But it doesn’t take over.

When you’re writing wedding stuff, does being able to get Wendell Pierce back as Rachel’s dad factor into where the story goes?

It does, to some degree. We wanted Wendell Pierce to come back and do an arc on the show. He’s obviously is involved in CBS' The Odd Couple and they were very gracious in allowing him to do some episodes of Suits. We got lucky enough to get Wendell Pierce for a little arc on the show and that is going to impact Mike and Rachel’s kind of life with him. He’s going to be involved in a case with Pearson Spector Litt.

Anything else you can say about season five?

When something happens at the end of the season, I’m not looking to come back and pretend it didn’t happen or undo it in one second. I’m always looking to follow it through and see what the ramifications are on our characters and in our world. We’re going to do that again in season five. Hopefully throughout the course of the season we’re going to try and take some big swings at things like I think we always have, and that’s really it. We’ve had a major coming together and a major splitting up at the end of four, and we’re going to carry those through to season five.

i've stopped caring about what happens at this point...not sure why. the quality of the show hasn't really wavered it's probably just not as interesting now that Mike isn't a super genius anymore and his "secret" is no longer a factor. it would have gotten old if those things were still the focus but i'm not sure they've done a good job finding a new focus. Luis losing his shit is getting old. Not sure I really care about the Harvey and Donna woes. I dunno man...

137. "it was a boring season"
In response to Reply # 136

...like REALLY boring....it's nmore about "look at how cool we are!! check out how we handle THIS situation!!" more than about real anything......they made this season less about any guest star...
i didn't hate it, but it's boring

...it doesn't stack up well to other well acted/written shows either
