"Doctor Strange confirmed SWIPE"

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/scott-derrickson-direct-marvels-doctor-709117

Never mind the Ant-Man director drama. Marvel Studios has found its helmer to bring superhero Doctor Strange to the big screen, with Scott Derrickson signing on to direct the Marvel feature.

Doctor Strange, who made his first appearance in the Marvel Universe more than 50 years ago, in 1963, is a former neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme -- the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. The character was first created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of Strange Tales No. 110.

STORY: Why 'Ant-Man' Director Edgar Wright Exited Marvel's Superhero Movie

Though Marvel's Ant-Man hit a few snags over the past month when director Edgar Wright exited the project and then his potential replacement Adam McKay dropped out of talks, the studio is moving full stream ahead on Doctor Strange. Marvel also is looking to hire a writer for Doctor Strange, and Jon Aibel and Glenn Berger are said to be in the mix.

Derrickson wrote and directed the upcoming Screen Gems thriller Deliver Us From Evil, starring Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez and Olivia Munn, which opens July 2. He also wrote, directed and executive produced the hit microbudget horror film Sinister for Summit Entertainment and Blumhouse Prods., and will write and produce the upcoming sequel Sinister 2. He also wrote and directed the Screen Gems supernatural horror feature The Exorcism of Emily Rose, which became a breakout for the studio, earning $144 million worldwide.

Derrickson also has worked in the arena of big-budget films, having directed The Day the Earth Stood Still remake for 20th Century Fox.

Derrickson is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment and attorneys P.J. Shapiro and

If I remember correctly, The Day the Earth Stood Still looked good so Derrickson seems like a solid choice.

He'd be fucking perfect. He tested for the Quill roll that Pratt got in GUARDIANS, so I know he's on their radar. But I can't see them investing the franchise in him alone.

Man, David Tennant as Dr. Strange would have me more excited for the movie than any other Marvel film. And he's more than strong enough of an actor to take the place as the center of the Avengers when Robert Downey Jr eventually takes off...

But I really doubt that Marvel or Disney would be smart enough to cast him. Getting rid of Edgar Wright alone is enough to say that they don't know nerd/fan culture well enough to make choices that would drive fanboys crazy.

My guess is either they'll go for some new blood and it won't go well, or they'll go with a bankable Hollywood actor that they think is on the level with Downey Jr.

even in a univese of superpowered humans, mutants and aliens, magic always seems like deus ex machina. There's always a new spell to pull out or demon to conjure.

35. "Benedict Cumberbatch To Play ‘Doctor Strange’ (link)"
In response to Reply # 0

EXCLUSIVE: Marvel has finally found its Doctor Strange. I’m hearing Benedict Cumberbatch is the studio’s choice for the superhero pic, and negotiations are about to begin. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south, and Marvel went back to the drawing board. With names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy also in the mix, this is obviously a coveted role. I expect this deal to make.

Cumberbatch is in the Oscar hunt this year for The Imitation Game, the Alan Turing biopic that the Weinstein Co is priming for a November 21 release. His hot streak has included winning the Emmy for playing Sherlock Holmes on the BBC/PBS hit Sherlock.

Phoenix never had a deal, and Marvel quickly got into it with other actors to play Doctor Strange in a free-standing film.

Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange and Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the pic (the first draft was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer). Doctor Strange was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960s. He’s a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.

Stephen Strange has already been mentioned in Marvel's movies and if the Dr Strange movie isn't released for another 24 months are we going to get a Cumberbatch cameo in an earlier film? I'm guessing he makes an appearance in CA3: Civil War.

Tilda Swinton in Talks to Join Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' (Exclusive)
by Borys Kit
MAY 27, 2015 11:34am PT

The actress is negotiations to portray the Ancient One, the Tibetan mystic who is a mentor to Dr. Strange.

Doctor Strange, being directed by Scott Derrickson.

Strange is Marvel’s supernatural hero, a formerly cocky surgeon who loses the use of his hands, and while on a last ditch attempt to heal himself, discovers magic.

Strange’s mentor is a Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One, who is training pupils to be the next sorcerer supreme. In the comics, the character has been a male, and Marvel Studios initially was searching for a male actor.

But the studio rethought the role and has now made it female. If a deal makes, Swinton will play the Ancient One.

Strange has a release date of Nov. 4, 2016. The movie is due to begin shooting November in the U.K. Kevin Feige is producing.

Joining a Marvel movie is the latest move for Swinton, whose film résumé reveals an actress that refuses to be pigeonholed in any way.

The actress will be seen with Amy Schumer in Judd Apatow’s new comedy, Trainwreck, and has appeared in the last two Wes Anderson movies, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom. In between, she gave a show stopping performance as a brutally poised but unbalanced villainess in Snowpiercer, Joon-ho Bong’s sci-fi movie that starred Chris Evans.

She won an Oscar for best supporting actress for 2007’s Michael Clayton and played the angel Gabriel in the 2005 adaptation of DC Entertainment’s comic Constantine.

Marvel had no comment.

Swinton is repped by UTA and Hamilton Hodell in the UK.

http://deadline.com/2015/06/chiwetel-ejiofor-doctor-strange-baron-mordo-marvel-benedict-cumberbatch-1201441281/

EXCLUSIVE: Deadline has learned definitively what role Chiwetel Ejiofor will play when he suits up for Doctor Strange, the Scott Derrickson-directed Marvel Studios film that will star Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character. Ejiofor, rumored to be joining the film, will play Baron Mordo, an enemy of Doctor Strange who first appeared in the comic Strange Tales in 1963.

Although he’s an enemy in the comics, don’t look for him to be necessarily a completely villainous character. Rather, he’s an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange‘s mythology. His isn’t the first change-up in the film; Swinton’s The Ancient One character is another, as the movie has gender-swapped the Tibetan male sorcerer from the comics. Both Strange and Mordo were mentored by The Ancient One, but Mordo tried to kill his teacher. Scripted by Jon Spaihts, the film follows the story of the brilliant and arrogant neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who learns after a horrific car accident that his hands don’t hold the key to his powers. Instead, he discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions. Disney has set the film for release on November 4, 2016.

Ejiofor, Oscar-nominated for 12 Years A Slave, is repped by CAA and Markham, Froggat And Irwin.

Rachel McAdams Eyed for Female Lead in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’
Justin Kroll
JULY 27, 2015 | 04:59PM PT

It looks like Marvel wants Rachel McAdams for “Doctor Strange.” Sources tell Variety that McAdams is the choice to land the female lead opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange,” although it’s currently unknown if an offer is in hand.

Heroic Hollywood first reported the news earlier this month, and McAdams confirmed to the L.A. Times that she was talking to the studio about the role. “It’s still super-early days, and I don’t know where that’s gonna go, if it’s gonna go anywhere at all,” she said.

Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are also on board to co-star. Scott Derrickson is directing the comicbook movie.

Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics vets Stan Lee and Steve Ditko co-created the character in 1963.

The role McAdams will be playing if cast is unknown.

Jon Spaihts penned the script with Kevin Feige producing.

“Doctor Strange” will debut on Nov. 4, 2016.

Known early on in career for her romantic dramas and comedies like “The Notebook” and “Mean Girls,” McAdams has pursued more serious, darker roles that began with her landing the highly coveted female lead of “True Detective” season two, which debuted recently on HBO to strong ratings.

She also has the boxing drama “Southpaw” and Catholic Church sex scandal pic “Spotlight” coming out this year, both of which could draw awards season buzz.

She is repped by WME and Magnolia Entertainment.

‘Doctor Strange’ Eyes ‘Hannibal’ Star Mads Mikkelsen to Play Villain
Justin Kroll
AUGUST 27, 2015 | 12:10PM PT

“Hannibal” star Mads Mikkelsen is in early talks to play one of the villains in Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” opposite Benedict Cumberbatch, Variety has learned exclusively. While sources say no offer has been delivered, one is expected shortly. Marvel had no comment on Mikkelsen’s involvement.

Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are on board to co-star. Scott Derrickson is directing the comic book movie from a script by Jon Spaihts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will produce.

Cumberbatch will play Stephen Vincent Strange, a former neurosurgeon who becomes the next Sorcerer Supreme and primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Marvel Comics artist Steve Ditko created the character in 1963. Swinton will play Strange’s mentor, the Ancient One, while Ejiofor will appear as Baron Mordo, who also studies magic under the Ancient One in the comic books, before becoming Doctor Strange’s nemesis.

Mikkelsen’s exact role remains under wraps, but sources say he will be another antagonist to Cumberbatch’s titular sorcerer.

“Doctor Strange” will debut on Nov. 4, 2016, with production set to start late this year.

Marvel has been interested in Mikkelsen for some time, at one point courting him for the villainous Malekith in “Thor: The Dark World,” until Mikkelsen won the role of the titular cannibal in NBC’s “Hannibal” and was no longer available. The Malekith role eventually went to Christopher Eccleston.

If accepted, this would be Mikkelsen’s second high-profile role in the wake of “Hannibal’s” cancellation — he’ll also appear in “Star Wars: Rogue One,” which will hit theaters on December 16, 2016. He is repped by UTA and Art Management.

‘Doctor Strange’ Cast Keeps Getting Better and Better as Michael Stuhlbarg Enters Talks
Posted on Monday, November 2nd, 2015 by Angie Han

Hot off of starring opposite X-Men: Apocalypse‘s Magneto in Steve Jobs, Michael Stuhlbarg has booked his own big-budget superhero adventure. Stuhlbarg has entered negotiations to star in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character. Scott Derrickson directs.

THR broke news of the Doctor Strange Michael Stuhlbarg casting. Cumberbatch leads the film as Stephen Strange, a hotshot surgeon whose brilliant career is cut short when he injures his hands. In a desperate attempt to heal himself, he stumbles across the discovery of magic. He eventually emerges as the Sorcerer Supreme, which earns him some enemies. Variety adds that Stuhlbarg will play Nicodemus West.

In the comics, Nicodemus West is the doctor who operates on Strange after his accident. Feeling guilty about his failure to repair Strange’s hands, Nicodemus follows Strange all the way to Tibet. Nicodemus also learns a bit about mystical healing, but abandons his studies prematurely.

Stuhlbarg joins an already incredible cast that also includes Rachel McAdams as the as-yet-unnamed female lead, Tilda Swinton as Strange’s mentor the Ancient One, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the villainous Baron Mordo. Mads Mikkelsen is also believed to be in the movie. In all, it’s a lineup more stereotypically suited for an Oscar-bound prestige drama than a big-budget superhero movie. Not that we’re complaining.

Though Stuhlbarg has been acting onscreen for close to two decades, he was better known as a theater actor until his breakout turn in the Coen brothers’ A Serious Man. Since then he’s also popped up in Hugo, Seven Psychopaths, Lincoln, Blue Jasmine, and the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. He’s best known for his dramatic roles (and he currently has a great one in Steve Jobs), but he’s apparently not adverse to fluffier fare; he had a scene-stealing role in Men in Black 3.

Doctor Strange starts shooting in London this December for release on November 4, 2016.

I cannot believe that they have been able to put all of these names together for a solo character movie who has not yet hit the big time in the movie business.

I remember hearing that Dr. Strange was being set up to be the RDJ as Iron Man in a post Iron Man MCU, so maybe they are just aiming high from the get-go.

They were saying that sources said Marvel was hoping to use characters like Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and at the time if they could get him, Spider-Man, as well as holdovers/non-stars-in-their-own-movies from the first 3 Phases as the Avengers moving forward.

I always assumed that Stark, Cap, Thor, and maybe Hulk would appear less and less as time went on, perhaps in more of a Nick Fury role as opposed to full-on stars.
