"Marvel/Netflix partner for FOUR new Series: Daredevil, Luke Cage, Others"

http://www.deadline.com/2013/11/disney-netflix-marvel-series/

The companies call this an unprecedented deal and Marvels most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling. Disney will provide Neflix with live action series and a miniseries featuring Marvel characters Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. Netflix will offer at least four, 13-episode series over multiple years with a miniseries, The Defenders, that they say reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters. The arrangement grew out of the deal that will give Netflix exclusive rights to Disney films in the premium TV window beginning in 2016. It is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvels brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling, says Marvel Entertainment President Alan Fine. And Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos calls Marvel a known and loved brand that travels.

Heres the release from Disney and Netflix:

BURBANK, Calif., Nov. 7, 2013 The Walt Disney Co. (Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels, sNYSE: DIS) and Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ: NFLX) today announced an unprecedented deal for Marvel TV to bring multiple original series of live-action adventures of four of Marvels most popular characters exclusively to the worlds leading Internet TV Network beginning in 2015. This pioneering agreement calls for Marvel to develop four serialized programs leading to a miniseries programming event.

Led by a series focused on Daredevil, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hells Kitchen, New York. Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvels The Defenders mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.
Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Television Studios, this groundbreaking deal is Marvels most ambitious foray yet into live-action TV storytelling.

This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvels brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling. Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvels specialty, said Alan Fine, President of Marvel Entertainment. This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in whats sure to be a thrilling and engaging adventure.

Marvels movies, such as Iron Man and Marvels The Avengers, are huge favorites on our service around the world. Like Disney, Marvel is a known and loved brand that travels, said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. With House of Cards and our other original series, we have pioneered new approaches to storytelling and to global distribution and were thrilled to be working with Disney and Marvel to take our brand of television to new levels with a creative project of this magnitude.

This new original TV deal follows last years landmark movie distribution deal through which, beginning with 2016 theatrically released feature films, Netflix will be the exclusive U.S. subscription television service for first-run, live-action and animated movies from the Walt Disney Studios, including titles from Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, Disneynature and Lucasfilm. Netflix members can currently enjoy a wide range of Disney, ABC TV and Disney Channel films and shows across the 41 countries where Netflix operates.

This sounds...pretty awesome.

This is huge for Netflix. Hopefully they won't be "cheap" and actually have decent budgets so it looks like quality.

DareDevil is MADE FOR HIM.

better than that bullshit ass arc he has on Supernatural.

like give him his own show with some MEAT and a character with DEPTH he can latch onto.

Penikett has always had the chops, but with his background in martial arts/stunt work, that put him out of the running for most shit because it's assume he only comes with just that.

but yea, Tahmoh as DD? I would DEFINITELY WATCH THAT.

But seeing as he's Bronze Tiger on Arrow, that might be kinda tough

Anything's possible, though.

All I know is that I just don't see all these regular-looking black dudes playing Luke Cage. I remember when people used to throw Tyrese's name around.... Please, Luke is supposed to be something of a giant, not some manorexic hipster.

And he'd probably bring the right "swagger", for lack of a better term, to Cage's character. But a big part of Cage's character is his physical presence. He's the self-described "scariest $%^&a on Earth" (direct quote from a Jessica Jones comic). Luke's a little too skinny.

nah luke isn't big enough or scary enough to pull it off.

Michael Jai White or Terry Crews would be the first two choices.

Luke is good. but not as Cage.

Plus, he's already in the universe (Captain America)....so unless Marvel is fine with using the same folk over and over again in their films, i don't see him as Cage.

Crews is OBVIOUSLY the best choice, but again, he's 45. He's obviously some kind of genetic freak, but even so, can he maintain that kind of shape into his 50's?

Him as Bronze Tiger is certainly a good fit.

But yeah, Cage really needs to be portrayed by a physical behemoth. Those Tyrese rumors were awful.

29. "Jessica Jones"
In response to Reply # 7

options:

if Jessica is White:
Liv Tyler
Gina Carano
Gemma Arterton (it wouldn't happen but I think she would more than rise to the occasion if the writing was top notch, which I assume it will be)
Teresa Palmer
Katee Sackhoff (she's on another show but if the role was right, I could see her leaving to be Jessica)
Jennifer Garner (hell she kinda already was a spy on ALIAS...but she's probably too old)
Emilia Clarke (if she wasn't on Game of Thrones and Jessica was just out of undergrad...)
Piper Perabo (same as Jennifer Garner, only replace ALIAS with Covert Affairs)

if they "diversified" Jessica (aka casted a role with an actress of color. won't happen but you never know):

N'bushe Wright (just put her in SOMETHING...find her lol)
Rosario Dawson (i'm throwing her in just for the hell of it. She probably wouldn't do it though)
Sanaa
Guga Mbatha-Raw (she WAS the best thing about that shitty ass UNDERCOVERS show on NBC)

But, they'll probably go with an unknown....

can't think of anyone else

Marvel scored the biggest superhero film of all time, one of the biggest grossing films of all time.

Obviously their followup projects are primed to generate loads of excitement.

What's that got to do with what DC is or isn't doing?

I don't get it.

and that would never get their own movie.

Aside from the fact DD was already a successful (profitable) movie with a spinoff, all these characters are at least or more popular than any hero in Guardians of the Galaxy. and someone should tell him about Blade, who was a virtually unknown character until his movie made him popular.

I'm really excited to see these characters and would consider getting a Netflix account again to watch them if it looks good, but these characters could easily be big and successful movies if done right.

The writer-producer of Lost and Alias will tackle the tale of blind superhero Matt Murdock

Drew Goddard is in negotiations to write the upcoming Daredevil series for Netflix and Disney, an individual with knowledge of the project has told TheWrap.

A representative for Goddard had no comment, while representatives for Netflix and Marvel did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Goddard previously served as a writer and producer on the hit ABC series Lost and Alias, as well as a writer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. He wrote this years Brad Pitt zombie epic World War Z, and directed the horror movie The Cabin in the Woods, which he also co-wrote with Marvel maestro Joss Whedon.

Daredevil follows blind superhero Matt Murdock, who was previously portrayed by Ben Affleck in a 2003 movie directed by Mark Steven Johnson.

As recently reported, the Walt Disney Co. and Netflix are teaming up for original live-action series based on Marvel characters Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. The deal also includes a miniseries about a team of superheroes called the Defenders.

The new series will kick off next year, with Marvel Television producing in association with ABC Television Studios.

Goddard is a self-professed Daredevil buff whose interest in the character is well known. Youre talking to a guy who had quotes from Daredevil painted on his wall while growing up, Goddard told Collider earlier this year. Even when I was 18, I still had the blood red door with the, I have shown him that a man without hope is a man without fear. That was what I loved and so its the sort of thing that if we can find the right project, I would love to do it.

Goddard, who is currently developing the sci-fi movie The Martian for 20th Century Fox, is represented by UTA.

47. "Melissa Rosenberg is EP of the Netflix Jessica Jones series"
In response to Reply # 0

YES!

Save for her writing the twilight series, this is a win!

She was behind the FIRST Jessica Jones tv show that ABC was developing pre-Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. that didn't go anywhere.

And, this will be the SECOND show to premiere in this series after Daredevil.

Luke Cage and Iron Fist don't have showrunners but many are being looked as we speak. I'm hoping they'll hire someone black for Luke Cage. But seriously, I just hope they find someone who is damn good writer who can do Cage justice. Iron First too.

http://www.deadline.com/2013/11/melissa-rosenberg-to-shepherd-marvels-jessica-jones-series-for-netflix/

EXCLUSIVE: Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg first was tapped to create a drama series based on Marvels Jessica Jones character three years ago, when the project was set at ABC. In typical Marvel fashion, no one is confirming, but I have learned that Rosenberg is attached to the projects new incarnation at Netflix as writer and executive producer. Jessica Jones is one of four series Marvel TV and ABC TV Studios sold to the streaming giant in a deal announced last week. Jessica Jones is slated second for release, following Daredevil, which is close to locking in Lost alum Drew Goddard as writer/exec producer. The other two Marvel series in the package are Iron Fist and Luke Cage, with the characters from each show then coming together for an Avengers-type superhero teaming in a chapter-closing miniseries. I hear Jessica Jones is undergoing redevelopment in its move to Netflix. The character, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, is a superhero suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder, which leads to her hanging up her costume and opening her own detective agency, where she ends up helping people and assisting other superheroes. Rosenberg most recently executive produced ABCs drama series Red Widow

Elektra

Mike Colter to Star as Luke Cage in Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones
Colter joins Krysten Ritter on the Netflix series in 2015!

Marc Strom
Dec 22, 2014

Marvel and Netflix are proud to announce that Mike Colter will star as Luke Cage in "Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones," an all-new 13-episode series premiering on Netflix in 2015 following "Marvel's Daredevil."

During the course of an investigation in New York City, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage – a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica in ways she could never have imagined.

Colter will star opposite Krysten Ritter, who plays the title role in “Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones.”

“Mike embodies the strength, edge and depth of Luke Cage,” said Executive Producer/Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg. “We're excited to have him bring this iconic Marvel character to life.”

"Fans have longed to see Luke Cage and in Mike we’ve found the perfect actor,” said Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer/Marvel's Head of Television. "Viewers will get to meet Luke Cage in ‘Marvel’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones,’ and experience why he is such an important super hero in the Marvel mythos.”

Colter is currently starring in the XBox original series “Halo: Nightfall” as Jameson Locke. He has appeared in a number of critically-acclaimed television series, including “The Good Wife” and “American Horror Story: Coven.”

After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.

"Marvel's A.K.A. Jessica Jones" is produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios for Netflix.

please who would have been a better choice?

Colter is quite good and Luke Cage is a role that you really need someone who's NOT famous (Tyrese, Morris Chestnutt, etc.) carrying the role and show...

And Colter is the strongest choice for this...

>But like I said, maybe he'll surprise me. You seem to think
>dude can carry the role. We shall see...

and that list doesn't even work...

Michael Jai White will be considered too old for the part and will have been aged out by those who are casting these Marvel shows. And he's on Arrow at the moment...

Terry Crews, funny as hell, can't act worth a damn and though y'all stan for him, you'll want the actor who plays Luke Cage to convincingly be able to go through whatever emotional arcs that pop up in the show...I love Terry but he ain't got range at all...

Derek Luke: good choice, but it's clear that after his run on NBC's Trauma, Hawthorne and The Americans, he's not keen on doing TV right now and is focusing on films (which sucks because he doesn't work NEAR enough and really should do tv).

So it came down to Colter and the other folks who were in the running. Colter was the best choice because out of all the folk who were in the running (short list), he was the only one who had chemistry with Krysten Ritter and THAT is a major plus for Netflix and the casting folk for Luke Cage and these Marvel shows. And, dude can act and has been putting in that work for years.

All that said, Colter is the strongest choice for the role. He'll be fine...

now all we need is to find out WHO is writing the show (I suspect they won't hire someone Black) and cast Iron Fist (since he's getting his own show in the Marvel/Netflix 60 episode deal), Misty Knight, Colleen Wing and Maya Lopez/Ronin/Echo (I keep hearing she'll pop in all of these shows as a recurring character, as will Misty and Colleen - though honestly, Misty and Colleen totally need to get an offshoot show i.e. Nightwing Restorations Ltd. because that could be a show in and of itself..)

Halo Nightfall and the The Good Wife (he has been outstanding on TGW) have been his most prominent roles to date.

But he is Luke...I really don't get why folk seem to against the idea of him being Cage when the choices listed above wouldn't even work.

cool, i'm good with this choice.
looking forward to this down to earth section of the Marvel Universe coming to life on the small screen...handled appropriately it has the potential to be really engaging.

again, i know they wont do this, (and there's not much reason to really, other than for goofy nostalgic folks like me ), but it would be a blast if they set this up in the 1970's ...

...just because thats when i personally fell into these characters growing up reading the comics...and that era has its own charm and was partially its OWN Universe in and of itself when you think about it....

...them damn 70's were somethin' else...pet rocks, kung-fu-fighting, 5-inch-stacks, Krazy-Kars <<them suckers there had NO BRAKES. You get going downhill in a Krazy Kar the ONLY thing STOPping you was gonna be a tree, trash cans, an oncoming car or a self imposed whipeout ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARX-KRAZY-KAR-SPINNING-RIDE-ON-TOY-C-1970-BIG-WHEEL-CLASSIC-/160742154435?pt=Vintage_Antique_Toys_US&hash=item256cfaa0c3)

.......that was some hardcore stuff man .... lol

I dug it! I'll keep watching. I'm relatively assured that he can pull off luke cage and he seems to have the physicality for the role. However, I haven't really seen an example of his agility. I need to see if he can throw them hands.

up further in this thread (and others) i had hoped (admitedly understanding all the while that it was highly UNlikely)...but still i had HOPED for this Marvel universe to be set in the 70s...

while the Netflix series probably wont be...

this pre-netflix plan woulda done it....damn!!! this woulda been exactly what i wanted! how did i not know of this until now??

Check out the draft of the proposal trailer in the link below...hell yeah..!

http://www.denofgeek.us/movies/daredevil/235389/joe-carnahan-reveals-more-about-his-daredevil-movie

"Joe Carnahan came very close to rebooting Daredevil, and he had a very specific vision for the trilogy.

Joe Carnahan was once the man to direct Daredevil. When Fox was looking to reboot Daredevil after years of trying to figure out what to do after the Ben Affleck film, Joe Carnahan came in and pitched a slightly different take on things, one which would have certainly distinguished itself from the parade of other superhero movies out there.

Mr. Carnahan envisioned Daredevil as a more low-budget, violent film set in the golden-age of martial arts and revenge movies: the 1970s. He even created a sizzle reel outlining his proposed aesthetic for the film. It's fantastic. Watch it here, and then read the biggest revelation of all about his Daredevil reboot!

In an interview with Movie Pilot, Mr. Carnahan reveals even more of his plans for Daredevil, including the fact that it was an intended trilogy.

What people don’t realize about the DD project is that the producers of the film, got to me very late. They had a script that I read and I thought that while the action was wonderful, the story didn’t really have any additional bite. There was nothing. I suggested a trilogy as follows. ‘Daredevil ‘73’ ‘Daredevil ‘79’ and ‘Daredevil ‘85’ where I was going to do a kind of ‘cultural libretto’ and make the music of those eras a kind of thematic arc. So the first one would be Classic Rock, the second one would be Punk Rock and the third film would be ‘New Wave.’ The problem was, the option was almost set to lapse so we made an eleventh hour bid to Marvel to retain the rights for a bit longer so I could rework the script. Unfortunately, it just didn’t happen. Marvel wanted the rights back. I don’t blame them.

We kind of hope he gets another shot at the character. His recent TV work on episodes of The Blacklist have proven that he can translate the big action movie aesthetic well to the small screen, so perhaps Marvel will give him a call for a couple of episodes their upcoming Daredevil series that will run on Netflix.

UPDATED: Mr. Carnahan has also been chatting with the good folks at SlashFilm, who clearly also thought about the possibility of a Carnahan-directed episode of Drew Goddard's upcoming Daredevil series. The prospects don't sound good. "I don’t know because I had such a specific...But Drew’s a talented guy. I’m sure they’re gonna do something really interesting with that. And I’ll line up to see it. But in terms of, just because you get stuck on your own bullshit sometimes, it’s hard to divorce yourself."

That's disappointing, but can't say we blame him."

ahh well...maybe...just maybe... Marvel will use elements of this idea somehow in Netflix series....? one nostalgic dude can only dream....

But the Netflix show looks to be dope as well.

Maybe Carnahan can make a movie using those same themes but with an original character? Not necessarily a superhero in tights, but a Charles Bronson-type action hero.

Marvel & Netflix's Iron Fist Lands Scott Buck as Showrunner
Lucas Siegel- 12/07/2015

Just a few weeks ago, there were rumors flying that Iron Fist might be off the table for Marvel TV and Netflix, rumors that both CCO Joe Quesada and Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb have dispelled in recent days.

Now, Comicbook.com has confirmed (with help from our friends at HH) that Iron Fist isn’t just moving forward, but has chosen a showrunner. Scott Buck, who served as EP on Dexter, and a producer on Six Feet Under, will take the reigns of the fourth and final solo series with Marvel and Netflix before they meet for a Defenders mini-series.

Marvel describes Iron Fist as follows: "Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist."

Those two shows, both on premium cable, certainly carried the dark tone that’s been established by the first two series, Daredevil and Jessica Jones, but little is known about the plan for Iron Fist so far. The character is by far the most all-out “superhero” out of the four Defenders, with a background that includes a mystical city, a superpowered punch, and kicking a dragon in the face, all pretty far afield of the light use of superpowers and mysticism we’ve seen on the shows so far.

No new timeline has been given for Iron Fist’s debut. Daredevil season two is next, coming Spring 2016, with Luke Cage season one later that year. Jessica Jones launched a few weeks ago to critical acclaim, so it’s possible a second season could be on the way there, as well.

‘Jessica Jones’ Renewed for Season 2 on Netflix
Whitney Friedlander
TV News Editor
JANUARY 17, 2016 | 08:39AM PT

Netflix has put “Jessica Jones” back on the case, announcing that it has given a second season of 13 episodes to the series starring Krysten Ritter as a private detective with superhuman abilities.

The long-awaited renewal is not much of a surprise. “Jessica Jones” premiered in November to strong reviews, with Variety’s Maureen Ryan heralding it as “not just a contender for the title of best Marvel-related TV property one of the year’s most distinctive new dramas.”

Part of Marvel Television’s super-powered deal with Netflix that includes four original series based on the characters in the comic giant’s universe, “Jessica Jones” gained attention for being one of the few comic adaptations to feature a female lead (another being CBS’ new drama, “Supergirl,” based on DC Entertainment characters). Like “Daredevil,” the first series to come out of this pact, its themes and situations are darker and more sinister than more network fare.

“All the conversations I wanted to be happening around it are happening,” executive producer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg told Variety after the show’s release. “There are just these wildly articulate insightful pieces being done about a feminist perspective, a political perspective, at a time where these subjects are getting some attention about women in Hollywood and women in the world, and how we’re portrayed in the media. It’s my life goal to contribute something to the world that hopefully moves it in a positive direction.”

“Jessica Jones” also stars Mike Colter as Luke Cage, another character from the Marvel universe, who will have his own series starting in 2016. This year also welcomes season two of “Daredevil,” with Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez taking over as showrunners.

Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones to play Iron Fist
BY JAMES HIBBERD
Posted February 25 2016 — 2:23 PM EST

Marvel has found its newest superhero: Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones has landed the coveted series lead in Iron Fist.

Jones, who plays Ser Loras Tyrell on the HBO hit, will take on the role of the martial arts master in the upcoming Netflix series, EW has learned.

Iron Fist is set to be the fourth Marvel and Netflix collaboration, following Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and the forthcoming Luke Cage. Scott Buck (Dexter) has been tapped as showrunner. Marvel plans to eventually unite all its heroes in a series called The Defenders.

In the comics, Iron Fist is Daniel Rand, who at age of 9 travels with his family from New York to a lost mystical city called K’un-L’un. After some tragic twists of fate, Rand is adopted by the city’s ruler and taught advanced martial arts and the mystical power of the Iron Fist. As an adult, Rand returns to his native New York and begins a career as a superhero.

Some fans have urged Marvel to cast an Asian actor in the lead role, even though the character is white in the comics. Others countered that picking an Asian actor simply because the hero’s ability is martial arts would be a stereotypical move. Jones’ casting was first floated as a rumor on That Hashtag Show.

Jones, who also appeared in British shows such as Hollyoaks, is next set to appear in season 6 of Thrones, while Marvel’s next premiere is the eagerly awaited return of Daredevil on March 18.

Netflix and Marvel had no comment.

any comic, video game or "geek" related website is going to have a bunch of people fighting or defending the status quo. "social justice warriors vs neckbeards"... It's basically white privilege vs everyone else.

I am disappointed they didn't take the chance to have an asian-america primary protagonist, but hardly surprised. I guess it's more pertinent to finally show a rich white guy becoming a superhero.

Don’t Expect ‘The Defenders’ on Disney Streaming Service Any Time Soon
By JOE OTTERSON

Fans of the Marvel Television series recently canceled by Netflix who hope to see the shows revived on Disney+ may be out of luck.

Sources tell Variety that the deal for the original four Marvel shows includes a clause that prevents the characters from appearing in any non-Netflix series or film for at least two years after cancellation. That means that “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist” — which were all canceled this year at Netflix — could not come to the Disney streaming service until 2020 at the earliest.

The chances of the shows returning either on their own or as a new installment of “The Defenders” is definitely a long shot, given the time frame. And even if they did go to Disney+ as soon as possible, they would be doing so without “Jessica Jones,” which is set to air its third season on Netflix sometime in 2019. If that show is canceled, which now seems likely but is by no means a guarantee, it could not go elsewhere until 2021.

Marvel and Netflix declined to comment.

Then there is “The Punisher,” a Marvel-Netflix show that was not part of the deal that spawned “The Defenders.” “The Punisher” stars Jon Bernthal, who first played the gun-toting vigilante in “Daredevil” Season 2 before the character was spun off into his own show. It was revealed on Wednesday that the second season of “The Punisher” will debut in January. Given that “The Punisher” did not fall under the original deal, the show’s fate beyond Season 2 is unknown at this time.

Fans of the Marvel shows were shocked when Netflix began canceling them, particularly “Daredevil,” which drew strong critical praise for its third season. The streaming giant and the comic book-based entertainment studio had signed the deal to produce the four shows back in November 2013, with “Daredevil” being the first to premiere in April 2015.

The deal called for the development of four original live-action series, which would then culminate in the miniseries event “The Defenders,” which ended up airing in 2017. However, Disney announced its plans for Disney+ in 2017, with the intent being to make it a hub for everything under the Disney umbrella, which includes Marvel.

The soon-to-be-streaming giant has already lined up several original shows, including limited series centered on the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Loki, Scarlet Witch, and Falcon and the Winter Solider. Disney+ will also be home to the live-action “Star Wars” shows “The Mandalorian” starring Pedro Pascal and a Cassian Andor series, with Diego Luna reprising his role from “Rogue One.”
