Go on head and give The GOAT another Best Actress nomination

Julio Robertz acquitted herself very well also

As did Chris Cooper

But yeah, I never saw Tracy Letts' stage play (which apparently was 3 1/2 hours) but was told that *most* of the material here is lifted verbatim from it. Lots and lots of monologues, which are like Scooby Snacks to The GOAT, who plays the drug-addled matriarch of a family (which includes cats like Juliette Lewis, Dermot Mulroney, Abigail Breslin, and Benedict Cumberbatch) that comes together after the disappearance of The GOAT's husband (Sam Shepard). Misty Upham, who some may remember from that Frozen River joint a few years back, is the housekeeper.

Quite a bit of darkly comedic family dysfunction, lots of words, not a lot of action, all in about 2 hours. I'd say go see it if you HAVE to see a gang of catty arguing and nasty putdowns (that you can't get enough of right here in PTP!), or if you just HAVE to see The GOAT kill everything on screen once again, or if you need to get out of the house on Christmas Day and hate watching the NBA and The Wolf of Wall Street is sold out (LOL), or you're a fan of Tracy Letts' work (he also wrote the wild-ass Killer Joe, as well as Bug)... otherwise, I'd say this is a Netflix-on-a-rainy-day rental...

I've seen a ton of theater, but it was definitely the best performance I've ever witnessed.

When I first heard about the cast for the movie, I thought they were on the mark with Meryl Streep, Juliette Lewis, Chris Cooper and Sam Shephard. I didn't know who Benedict Cumberbatch was at the time, but now I think that is legit casting too.

BUT I was mad hesitant at Julia Roberts and Ewan McGregor. In the play, Barbara Weston's character (Roberts in the movie) is almost equally as powerful a character as Violet Weston (Streep), and I still don't see any way that Julia Roberts could bring the same energy that Amy Morton brought. Shit was unbelievably good.

Ewan McGregor, eh, I'm just tired of hearing his incredibly flimsy American dialect.

Seriously though, if this movie even came close the play in terms of moving around from hilarious to heartbreaking...the shit will get hella Oscar nominations.

I mean, make no mistake, this is all about The GOAT, but as the story's written, Barbara has to stand up to her almost as a matter of survival, and Julia appeared up for the challenge

Not to oversell it, but I think she might cop a Best Supporting nomination

but Misty Upsham *REALLY* should have gotten a best supporting actress nomination for FROZEN RIVER.

but, hollywood was *NOT* about to give no damn statute to a Native actress that year...smh

but she's really good in the small part she has in the movie from what I hear.

This would be a netflix rental, but I do want to check it out...

Shit was hard to like anyone in this motherfucker, which in turn made me not give a shit.

Plus, even though it was funny at parts I was struggling to keep awake in the first 45 minutes.

The cast kilt it though. And the photography is excellent, so props to the DP.

Yo Streep was one of the many people who came in today. I'd still smash.

9. "real housewives of osage county"
In response to Reply # 0

this is one of the films that touches on a number of interesting themes-- drug abuse, suicide, divorce, etc.-- but doesn't really have anything interesting to say about any of them. instead, these themes are used as a framework to squeeze the maximum amount of drama out of the characters. like that scene where juliette lewis's new boyfriend starts getting creeplife with her 14-year-old niece-- in many films that would just be a subtle revelation of his character. in the real housewives of osage county, it's sure to end up in a shouting match with shovels being swung. that's basically the entire film in a nutshell. can't wait for the reunion show when andy cohen brings the ladies back to discuss the scene where julia roberts tackles meryl streep.

i mean, look, the acting is top notch at times. the GOAT is given the herculean task of portraying a woman at various stages of health and sobriety, and because the film gets right into it and we get no baseline of what normal looks like, her performance comes off as frequently brilliant but disjointed... occasionally a bit theatery. anybody else would be a lock to sweep awards season, but you know we have to grade the GOAT on the curve. after that, julia roberts was probably the standout here. abigail breslin isn't special to me, and she doesn't come close to landing a role like this without the name recognition. ewan mcgregor is boring and awful.

the one relationship you might even begin to care about is between ivy and little charles, and of course it ends unresolved. like, they squeeze every possible ounce of drama out of every other relationship, taking everything to its logical shouting match conclusion, yet that one they decided to leave open ended. well done.

overall, a nice time at the movies. some nice moments. reminded me of gods of carnage, another theater to film adaptation. lots of talking, lots of theatery dialogue, lots of characters we don't care about, and no real reason for it to be a film but here you go.

"i smack clowns with nouns, punch herbs with verbs..."

(I'm right though.)

Props to Cooper and Martindale though, they acquitted themselves best.

I can't vouch for the tour cast, but it is the funniest show I've seen in my life, so I'm pretty certain any professional cast will be decent.

In regards to smaller stuff, I haven't really seen much out here yet-- a friend of mine is opening a play in March, so I'll see that and post whether it's any good, for sure.

shit just comes off as unnatural and grating.

but Streep did the absolute best she could with a truly cringe-worthy script.

Julia Roberts, as usual, was overwhelmed by the material

The highlights for me were CC sayin grace & Ivy puttin her sisters in their place in the gazebo.

Met Misty Upham's uncle before this screened a while back & was hoping she'd be more involved

Pretty good companion piece to Nebraska for me & my Oklahoma roots

sore thumbs...

*BOTH* were distracting.

it should have been WAY better than it was imho

and yea, Julia was fine...but when she was sharing the same screen as Margo and Meryl, SHIT you saw JUST how lacking she was compared to those two.

And Margo and Meryl: Can I see them in a movie TOGETHER? Amazing...

it wasn't great, but it was damn good. I like talky shit that's real with pieces of humor

and as others have said the scene when GOAT shuts down her daughters, shiieeeet. the twist was very O_O

With better lighting / scene composition, and better male actors (outside of Chris Cooper), this would've have been great

and boy Julia is a good actress, but she was stuhg-uh-leen in a couple of scenes with GOAT

goddamn Juliette Lewis still does something to me. To this day sexy. could be tied to a few years back I chopped it up with her at a De La Show in Hollywood and she was hella cool.
