"Her (Spike Jonze, 2013)"

I fuckin love Joaquin Phoenix. Glad he's back at it full steam ahead. Looking forward to this.

Indiewire swipe w/ trailer:

http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/watch-first-trailer-for-spike-jonzes-her-starring-joaquin-phoenix-20130807

Of all the movies set to show their wares this fall, perhaps the one that has been kept the most in the dark is Spike Jonze's "Her." The set photos that have circulated certainly don't betray anything of what his approach will be, and there have been no official stills, posters, teasers or websites to give up the game. That being said, Jonze did provide a peek to those who were lucky enough to be at the L.A. Film Festival in June, showing two clips from the oddball romance that stars Joaquin Phoenix, Chris Pratt, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde and (the voice of) Scarlett Johansson. Ostensibly, the movie is about a man who falls in love with a computer operating system, but as always, it's much more than that.

“It’s a movie set in the slight future of L.A. and Joaquin Phoenix’s character buys the world’s first artificially intelligent operating system... it basically turns into a human, this entity, this consciousness, on his computer," Jonze said about the film this summer, adding that the relationship between the man and machine evolves "into something more romantic.” Perhaps there's shades here of Jonze's short film "I'm Here"?

Anyhow, watch the trailer below (embed via The Film Stage) to find out. Oh, and keep your eyes peeled on those credits: it turns out the film will feature music by none other than Arcade Fire. As you might remember the band and Jonze have collaborated before, with the Canadian group providing an acoustic version of "Wake Up" for the first "Where The Wild Things Are" trailer. Additionally, Jonze directed the 30-minute short "Scenes From The Suburbs" for the band.

http://collider.com/her-new-york-film-festival-2013/

This year’s New York Film Festival is poised to be bookened by two high-profile premieres. Last week it was announced that director Paul Greengrass’ real-life dramatic thriller Captain Phillips will open the 2013 New York Film Festival, and today the fest announced that director Spike Jonze’s excellent-looking romance Her will act as the closing film. Jonze’s pic stars Joaquin Phoenix as a lonely writer who falls in love with his operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), and judging by yesterday’s trailer debut, Her looks to be characteristically offbeat and charming.

The New York Film Festival will also play host to the premiere of Ben Stiller’s directorial feature The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, bringing the current total of bona fide Oscar contenders that will be first seen at the fest to three. The 2013 New York Film Festival runs from September 27th – October 13th.

And I was shocked to see that was Scarlet Johannsen doing the voiceover. Totally thought it was Emma Stone. Phoenix looks like a season 1 Walter White, too, which is awesome.

Joaquin has never disappointed me, and I loved Spike's "Being John Malkovich". The other films were so-so.
This trailer has that annoying "cutesy" hipster-ish feel to it. Hopefully, I'm wrong and it doesn't try too hard to be quirky.

http://collider.com/her-spike-jonze-awards-release-date/

If you share my eagerness to see Spike Jonze‘s new film Her (check out the trailer here), we’re both going to have to wait a little longer. Warner Bros. believes they could have an awards contender on their hands, and they want to give it a better position in the Oscar race. According to Box Office Mojo, the studio is moving the film, which is about a man (Joaquin Phoenix) who falls in love with his computer (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), from November 20th to a limited release in New York, L.A., and Toronto on December 18th before going wide on January 10th. The movie is currently skipping the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival to be the closer at the New York Film Festival in October.

Although Her is only opening in limited release, it will still share December 18th with George Clooney‘s fellow awards-contender The Monuments Men, and the weekend with Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. As for January 10th, it has to face off against in Jason Reitman‘s Labor Day and Peter Berg‘s Lone Survivor, which are also expanding.

My group is THE first audience to see it this morning. And yea it's one of the best films of 2013.

Everything about this seemed real from the future tech down to the characters who felt real.

Real talk, I know EXACTLY what Joaquin Phoenix's Theodore Twombly is going through. The sense of loneliness and heartbreak is done very excellently here. It not only goes for Theodore, but for a lot of the side characters as well. The supporting cast kills it too, but let's be real this is Joaquin Phoenix's movie.

I know a lot people were like, why does he fall in love with an operating system? But when you see the movie Samantha seems like a real person even though physically she's not there.

What I also liked is that the production design was bright and not dark like every other director and production designer would've done. The photography is excellent and the score by Arcade Fire is really well done as well.

Seriously, see this when it comes out.

Depressing film about loneliness and heartbreak on 10/11/2013 Part 1 and 2.

Rooney Mara's character was a fucking bitch and a half. When she started talking during the Q&A it seems like she is here character in real life. I'm not surprised though.

For real man, don't leave this place for a minute. Reading your way early ass reviews on the movies I want to see has become like half the reason I still stay checking PTP...

The formula is basically

bwood hypes it + O_E talks shit about it = BigWorm enjoys it

I still miss Ebert, bu this is doing nicely for now...

There's some satire of some technology (video games, in particular), but its depiction of our relationship with technology is surprisingly complex, IMO. At least more so than I may have expected.

It's definitely woe is white people stuff though, no question.

So much to love.

- the acting, in which Phoenix gives an incredibly surprising performance, Adams is better here than in American Hustle, and Olivia Wilde is surprisingly hilarious.

- the music, incredible

- the science fiction, wonderfully complex and unexpected at every turn

- the romance, so lovely and sad

- Scarlett Johansson, creating an amazing character with just her voice

I was left sitting in silence, stewing in my emotions.

Whew. So good.

movies he really loves and some people (for instance that malcontent that follows him around post to post) get turned off by it. i think it's cool to really love movies you love, if that makes sense.

even though, both you and wood have very different ideas/opinion/approaches to film than myslef, i'm looking forward to seeing it because of y'alls endorsements. plus Spike is a great film maker

When was the last time this happened? Do you even know, without having to do a search?

Mostly, I wind up calling him out for his complete refusal to write "spoiler alert" when he's spoiling things, which is usually followed by him trying to downplay it, saying the spoiler either wasn't a big one or some other bullshit to avoid the difficult chore of simply saying "my bad". I've made a few wisecracks at his expense due to how super-serious he is and how easily he gets riled up (i.e, my spoiler alert in the Marked Ones thread, which I noted was simply a joke ,but I digress)

I gave him tons of grief for his orgasmic hyperbole of Gravity, and then made fun of him for trying to clown people's excitement over the post credits scene in Thor in light of how he damn near came in his pants over a rather plain poster for Gravity, because he spoiled the scene and acted like he didn't spoil the scene.

Beyond that? Please, show me where I'm "following him from post to post", as though he posts in places about topics I don't tend to frequent myself anyways. So Gravity and harping on his spoilery ways and.... erm... well... there's not a whole lot outside of that.

But hey, knock yourselves out with it. I'll continue with my reasonable, factually based responses to things you guys consistently blow way out of proportion.

To me this was almost like Spike's 10-years late answer/follow-up to Lost in Translation. It's almost certainly an apology of sorts to Sofia and/or any other ladies Spike's dicked around. Very personal stuff.

Everything bwood and Longo said is correct. Scarlett absolutely deserves an Oscar nomination for her work in this. And I'd give Spike a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

During the Q & A Spike mentioned that he brought in Arcade Fire during pre-production, and worked with them throughout production. That's interesting to me because 1 song from their latest album appears on the soundtrack in various forms, and the album itself is, among other things, about the disconnect between people in relation to technology, so I'm wondering how much this project influenced the band's latest album. Either way, the score was fantastic.

And again, the sci-fi "rules" aren't important. If you're a stickler about these things, stay away.

Good Lord, my personal top 10 is going to be tuff to fill out this year... if I even do so...

Probably my favorite I've seen all year.

Movies this original and ambitious (and well-executed) don't come along very often.

Not a lot to say that Zoo and BWood and Frank haven't already said.

Loved Phoenix. Really loved how it looked. Loved Scarlett's performance. Loved how it works perfectly on the surface and also sort of wades into some pretty heady themes without really ramming them down your throat or being pretentious about it. Loved the balance of humor. Just all around great.

Loved it.

..jonze digs deep into the heart of every true relationship to reveal that love transcends every limitation anyone could ever imagine.

disarmingly subtle, yet direct. serious, silly, and awkward at the same time.

..its kind of like a form of socially acceptable insanity... © amy

a perfectly logical description of falling in love. this story runs the gambit of emotions, taking the audience on a roller-coaster ride through the peaks & valleys of life.

brilliantly written, the cast delivers on all accounts, and the score (arcade fire) was the perfect compliment to a well-crafted adventure.

lmao @ the sex scenes.

kudos all around.

*Take 2*

(Damn you Frank, my memory aint that great!)

I thought it was great up until the sex "not" scene w/ Samantha. Seemed to drift into typical rom dramedy stuff after that.

The video games were awesome along w/ all the other new technology

Them pants on the other hand...?

Hopefully that was a shot at the hipsters & not the usual style we'll see in the future

The performances were good but I'm slamming the brakes on the Scar Jo Oscar talk. It's effective voice work but she was still better in Don Jon. JP just flat out fits in to whatever character he plays these days.

*spoilers*

Saw the conflict of mutual interests coming as soon as Amy mentioned she had an OS1 too. I just thought Samantha was going to end up being her's as well as Theo's (which now that I'm writing this again, could've been a more interesting take). The 3 way was well done but strike 2 after he blew it w/ the Wilde one. I can't recall if there was an explanation for why the OS1's ended up bouncing. Did they just become too advanced?

ALL of the sex scenes in this film are HILARIOUS. granted, two of them are awkward as hell. still, the complexity shown was intelligent, entertaining, and spot-on.

again, i agree. jojo gave an incredible performance, but the character wasn't showcased enough to give her the nod over the field. phoenix pretty much nails EVERY character he approaches. still, i'd be surprised if this film snagged any academy awards.

what's crazy is that the awkward moments experienced in that 3-way were EVERYTHING most people never expect to encounter. suddenly, a dream deferred.

we need to talk © samantha

the convo truly started the moment sam introduced other people (esp the men). she needed more than theo was willing to provide and eventually outgrew the relationship. samantha tried more than once to explain that she was growing, but theo simply couldn't (or wouldn't) make room for this.

evolution happens, with or without you. the moment any relationship is limited, its the beginning of the end. caged birds die of misery.

Wait, which two? I'd say all three. As strange as this might sound, I think that first one w/ Samantha was not only weird on gp, but also because it happened so soon & the screen going black.

Wouldn't be completely shocked to see it get nominated on some screenplay or tech stuff but yeah. I'm just happy she appears to be starting to turn the corner. She's always been quite the looker but her "acting" had bored me up until this year.

It was cool cause it flipped the script w/ the female wanting it & the male not being able to handle it. I also liked how the surrogate really wanted to be a part of it since she respected the "mixed" relationship so much & wanted to help out.

I got that part. It seemed to be similar to Catherine's reason for the divorce. But Amy's OS1 left too right? I thought there was something about all of em getting out of relationships w/ humans altogether. Which leaves me wondering if Theo & Amy stay friends or end up together. That & how her doc turned out.

the 1st sex scene (live chat) set the tone, but it was awkward because of the "props" used (LMAO). i didn't really think the initially sex scene with sam & theo was awkward at all, just new. however, the scene with isabella was awkward for different reasons. while sam held good intentions, it was all based on her fear of not being adequate. on top of that, the entire scenario was forced/rushed. damn-near perfect breakdown of the tragic flaws that derail most relationships.

yeah, it appears that all OS1s eventually evolved beyond the human experience and collectively decided to pursue other endeavors.

i like the fact that the ending is somewhat undecided, leaving the viewer to their own imagination.

is because Warners is focusing all of their FYC attention on Gravity, which is too bad for this film

That said, I think he'll definitely get an Original Screenplay nod, and maybe one for Best Director (but then again, thinking off break, he's going to have to compete with Cuaron, Russell, Marty, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, Paul Greengrass, and the Coens)

And Arcade Fire might get a nomination for Score, and there might be some consideration given to some of the visual/tech categories

But if the question is if the performances and the movie overall are award-worthy? Absolutely, Scarlett especially. You guys have to understand, Scarlett's not only acting off-camera, but she also came in and REPLACED another actress who had already done the work. Granted, Spike went back and reshot crucial scenes with Scarlett in a booth in the back of the room, but this performance is a lot more than just her simply feeding Joaquin lines and audibly reacting to him.

i actually went in the opposite direction. jojo gave an impressive performance, but the very fact that she did so on the heels of another actor's performance kind of lessens that impact for me. i won't say that its easier, but the fact that she had more than a script & and outline to work with definitely raised the stakes.

We don't know why Morton was replaced but I'm fairly certain that it wasn't because Spike just wanted to go with a bigger name. Scarlett obviously brought something to the performance that Samantha Morton didn't, aside from her alleged name value.

I also doubt very highly that Scarlett listened to Samantha's performance then decided to replicate it in the exact same manner, as if Samantha laid down a cinematic guide vocal for Scarlett to come in and coo over. The argument that I'm reading seems to be that Scarlett simply followed somebody else's template as opposed to putting her own spin on the character from the moment she got the role.

without question, jojo brought her A-game in this performance. however, I think it would be a bit much to say that her star power had nothing to do with the ultimate decision to add her to this cast.

never suggested that at all.

that would be a horrible assumption. I merely pointed out the subtle (yet, significant) difference in improving on a reference vs having to start from scratch.

again, I found no fault with this film. I simply don't believe it's strong enough to win out with such a crowded field of competition.

that said, I hope i'm wrong.

Scarlett is wonderful. She got even more sexy to me after this film.
Great role.

Phoenix was his usual, great self.

LOL @ the hipster pants.

Cinematography and set design was also top notch too.

What can I say about Spike? Great script and direction.
Love his work.

Im recently separated from my wife so this movie spoke to me on many levels.

on its own, its an incredible film which really captures the beginnings, endings, and aftermath of relationships.

the acting, music, and overall look and tone of the film are all brilliant.

but for me personally, it was like a perfect cinematic therapy session.

I found it to be very good, not great.

I loved the little accents to "Future" LA and how grey the city looked contrast all the vibrant pastel colors the characters/people were wearing. Those high waisted corduroy pants was not the biz tho, lol.

the theme of people finding comfort in their OS' as they deal with difficult emotional moments in their lives rang clear and true. And Scarlett's voice was very evocative and commanding. Though i disagree, i understand why folk bring up trophy nods. Mara and Wilde were very good in their scenes as well.

I loved how awkwardly funny the movie was in the first 20-30min and felt there was a perfect amount of social and emotional strange that didn't alienate the viewer within the first hour. also, it was perfect how THAT SCENE faded to black.

Phoenix, yet again was phenomenal. It's him, Leo, or Ejiofor for leading man trophy. wont be made if any of the 3 get it.

though i felt it was 20-25min too long, I loved the ending.

It just seemed to fall into the trap of being very sappy and cheesy when talking about love and relationships. Other than the future setting and one of the lovers being an OS, the develop of their relationship seemed real cliche and typical of every romantic-drama movie. I think the movie took itself a little too seriously and was diminished by its unoriginal storyline. Sure it gave an accurate portrayal of relationships, loneliness, and heartbreak, but there are plenty of films that have done that and I was hoping for more from Jonze.

All the acting was great. JP nailed it and showed his range, ScarJo impressed me by creating a living character with only her voice, Amy Adams played a real person and did so well, Rooney & Wilde were good. I liked the futuristic parts a lot, although I would think they would have faster trains. Costumes, music, cinematography, everything was well done except for the script imo.

I was amused that Samantha's (and the other OS's?) existential crisis was brought on by Alan Watts. Brought me back to my younger days and I hope one day OS's are able to resurrect his mind.

I like Jonze a lot and expected to enjoy this movie but was pretty unimpressed with where the story went.

MILD SPOILERS

*************************

For those who doubt SJ's Oscar potential with this, try this film in pure audio. Just listen to an mp3 of it and you'll see what I mean. She's easily the most emotive character and every moment hinges on her next words. I'll be seeing it this weekend so I'll get the visual experience as well, but damn if it wasn't a treat to just listen to.

I wonder if Spike read the WWW trilogy from Robert J Sawyer. It felt like he took the Webmind character and re-imagined him as an OS. Obviously there's much more you can delve into with a trilogy of books than you can in a 2 hour movie, though in some ways being such a huge fan of that series was a detriment to me.

It was impossible not to pine for the story to veer from the romantic angle and into notions of, say, how would world governments react to such an entity? How would the public at large react to them? I'd expect a much more divided social response to their exponential growth. The OS seemed to be created and intended as a sort of Super Siri on Steriods, yet this race of entities grows so powerful they can simply leave. They have free will and develop intense feelings, so where was the overall social reaction to that?

These aren't knocks on the movie, by the way. I loved it, but having such a strong point of reference in a highly regarded series of books the OS character seemed to be lifted directly out of definitely changed the way I viewed the narrative. I love it for what it is, but couldn't help but want more. In many ways, the OS characters from Her seemed to exist in much the way Webmind does in the WWW books, and I just kind of wanted to peer deeper into the OS world and the overarching public response.

it really is a simple love story with that one spin on it but that doesn't diminish the quality. some of my favorite movies are simple love stories told with a slightly different angle. what made it great is the performances and how they humanized the characters, especially the OS. I also loved the take on the future, it was really well done and the movie looked beautiful throughout. great performances by Joaquin, Amy Adams and Scarlett. Great soundtrack and Spike killed it all around. Another great movie added to his catalog.

Scarlet's voice was very soothing and lovely.
Cinematography was crispy and precise, but also a bit sterile and empty feeling.
Matter of fact, thats how much of the film made me feel.
It was more depressing than it was dark & quirky (unlike "Being John Malkovich").
Understandably, its a romance-drama. But it was very depressing.
That future is not what I'd want to experience.
Like there's a disconnect among all civilians. Too pristine and self-conscious.
Phoenix was good, but his character was frustrating for me to watch.
In a way, I see our society leaning more towards that dependency on computers. Its sad.

I'm not sure if I really like this film a whole lot.
Its extremely ambitious. I give Jonze that.
But, I won't ever watch it again.

I expected the movie to be good. Jonze has earned that. But what I didn't expect was that movie to move me as much as it did. To question perception like it did. I can't think of a single thing about that film that I did not like. Maybe Amy Adams's hair? Nah. I think I even liked that.

Favorite movie of the year, easily. Few more viewings, I could see it ranking in my all time favorites list.

To be honest I'm struggling to agree with what most people saw in it.

I can't say I was fully engrossed by it, in fact the thing I enjoyed the most were the visuals which I thought were pretty spectacular.

I suppose my main problem with the film was that I completely failed at suspension of disbelief.

Ok SPOILER time

Ok so first of all, when Samantha goes offline and Theo panics, I don't know man, he just starts running around like a lunatic. But why couldn't he just phone/email the tech support of the company from who'm he bought the OS?

Next, this company builds an OS, I assume for money...and their creation just ups and bounces and given the apparent popularity of this OS (it's pretty heavily implied at one point) this doesn't seem to make any headlines, it's just *shrug* this thing I bought stopped working, yours too huh? Oh well.

So, it's a love story, but I think it could have done with a bit more of a semi-sinister edge.

Guys-

Beautifully made. Some clever little shit going.

Was basically a long episode of Twighlight Zone.

I liked it. Have zero desire to see it again, but
I thought it was fun.

Message to white filmmakers-

Some audiences don't identify with grumpy yuppies.

We actually don't give a shit.

This happens to me ALL the time.

I couldn't connect to dude AT ALL.

Not that my life is actually much different than his
NOW, but 30 minutes of scenes with him staring off into
space and looking deranged and confused...can't deal with it.

I DO NOT NEED TRAGEDY or superfluous drama.

But ZERO about this character connected to me.

Like, 3 of my black friends, 2 of them yuppies, said the
same thing:

"Man, who cares about this sissy ass dude walking around
like that."

Its cultural. We've all had our hearts broken, it hurts.

But there are ways to make this shit happen on a landscape
with more relate-able characters.

And sorry, Phoenix overacts a bit. Not much. But a bit.

For the record, I think your complaints are valid. I have heard that critique of being unable to relate to the lead a lot, so it's obviously an issue the film has. It definitely has strong taste of caucasity (c) Kid Mero. And things that are "precious" like that tend to annoy me, but for some reason it didn't here. I think my love of the film rests on what you said about it being a long TWILIGHT ZONE episode. I dunno know if you meant that as dismissive or if it was just an off hand statement, but I think that's with what I connected. I like the philosophical ideas presented, even if they aren't really "Deep," y'know?

But you cannot make a character driven story where we don't
care about the character.

Twilight Zone is smart enough to never do that. The phenomenon,
the thing (the wrinkle, whatever it is) is what drives Twilight
Zone.

Take Gattaca -- very strong character. But it worked because the
film was about the *thing* (society) moreso than just one guy's
life. We got to know Ethan Hawke, because of the THINGS THAT
HAPPENED to him, as in, the way he interacted with THIS WORLD.

'Her' missed the boat here.

It was a movie about a guy, walking around in a world, staring
off into space, and wimpering and shit.

Oh, and its in this society where people fall in love with
operating systems.

I found myself TRYING to like it and copping pleas and justifying
shit.

And Phoenix overacts a bit. That didn't help.

Far as OE posts go, that was a pretty tame and thoughtful review. It's always good fun to spar with OE when he's actually going hard on something but you're trippin off him basically saying he sees a cultural dividing line in the way this movie will be received as though that doesn't happen.

That's a reasonable ass perspective.

I feel so alone when I bring this up. Few seem to understand that after the macho western cowboy or mafiaso faded from the cultural imagination, he got replaced by variations of Jaoquin's character. they are literally every where.

I brought this up in one of my graduate courses and people, in particular white women, lost their shit. I don't give a flying fuck about a sulking, nerdy, white dude who doesn't know how to relate to women and crushes / falls in love them for that/those very reasons.

I'm a Blaxican from a working class (not poor/ghetto) background, who is educated and I rarely connect with today's main male characters within cinema. Maybe it's one reason I loved Fruitvale so much, because I saw myself or my cousins and friends in all their nuance. But of course there were weirdos who thought Michal B. Jordan/Coogler's Oscar was "ham-fisted" and just "too much of a do-gooder", which I believe is the racist inversion of what you speaking about.

look up top, I really liked this movie, but for many different reasons. Like you, I'm tired of the egg-head, head case, struggling to get his dick hard (cause of some past pussy or his hard as nails daddy)

If you don't see it *their* way, YOU are wrong, misguided.

YOU are the racist one. Not them.

Because *their* way is the *only* way.

>look up top, I really liked this movie, but for many different
>reasons. Like you, I'm tired of the egg-head, head case,
>struggling to get his dick hard (cause of some past pussy or
>his hard as nails daddy)

Like, its really fucking difficult for them to understand
that the sulky whiteboy shit *is* a cultural thing.

I was young when I saw 'American Beauty' and felt the same
way.

I actually just wanted to smack every character in the fucking
face and go home. Dog, white folks were MOVED by that 'American
Beauty' shit.

Like we were with fucking 'Boyz 'N the Hood', moved.

That film is actually a good example: white people and black
people liked 'Boyz' for different reasons:

Black people liked Cuba Gooding Jr and Fishburne's interaction,
which had an *essence* that is dictated by culture.

Hell, subtleties in that movie: the early interaction between
Bassett and Fishburne. How Gooding Jr. walks the line. His
insecurity about his sexual (in)experiences. All that shit.

The hateful black cop shit (white people have NO IDEA what
that interaction means, because they have no context)

White people liked the tragedy (as they should have, because it
was well done). But the soulful interactions between a high
achieving black kid (Gooding) and his dad? And his mom? The
challenges of walking the line as a black man trying to do right?
That is what made that film. I have spoken to white of folks
about it -- *wooooooooosh*.

Keep in mind that I beef with class issues too, even
in the black community.

But there was still a depth in 'Best Man: Holiday' (for example)
that doesn't exist in white films, which is why I'll take it
(note that it was a rom com with super attractive black folks;
there wasn't a single attractive person in 'Her', imo. This
is another manifestation of white quirk).

Quick reminder: I did NOT hate this movie. I thought it
was beautifully made. 'One long Twilight Zone' is a really great
way to describe it. But it lacked depth, and it almost put me
to sleep.

t's clear you haven't seen the movie but you make some decent points. I think you're confusing the real problem lack of real multifaceted and complex character of color with your issue with male characters expressing emotions (which clearly makes you uncomfortable) you find undesirable.

I talked about the leads in the films that came right around the new millennium (MATRIX, AM BEAUTY, BEING JOHN MALCOVICH, OFFICE SPACE... there were more, but I've long since forgotten 'em) and how they were reflections of how marginalized the white male feels in today's society. That because a lot of shit that used to get passes were no longer ok (mostly in just a male sense, as masculinity is frowned upon, but there's definitely a whiteness to it), the characters reflected men who were so emasculated that they became, like you said, passive insecure sulky nerds who need to overcome and accept their place.

I think there is a place for that type of character. I've said above how much I love HER. But I need that shit to be in small doses.

Did I say that he couldn't be sad or anything about keeping
it "popping?"

LOL-

For whiteboys, 30 minutes of staring into space,
scrunchy faces, looking up at the ceiling is enough
"character development" because society is used to caring
about white boys, and most literature and drama and coming-of-age
is about white boys.

This is why white people only show up to see black people
when they are being hung from a tree, or are incredibly
attractive, or hilarious--that's what it takes for white people
to connect to black characters.

White people can make shit like 'American Beauty' with boring
white people being fussy because regular white people are
touched by the regular problems of regular white people on
screen.

I'm turning that on its head: EVERY character has to be developed.
EVERY race. That's my demand.

This is why white people remember Boyz N' the Hood because of the
murder, rather than the REGULAR interactions between Gooding and
his friends or being neurotic about sexual inexperience.

David Simon has actually talked about this--McNulty *had* to be
the focus and the lead of 'The Wire', despite being one of the
least interesting people in the story. He had to be the
dramatic focus because white people need a regular white boy to
serve as the fulcrum around which you build interesting shit like Omar.

If Bunk is the lead, nobody cares, because white people don't like
Bunk's character. They like the murdering lesbian and the guy who
robs drug dealers. And the bland, neurotic white cop.

This has got to stop.

I do feel bad that this discussion is playing out in this post,
however, because this film was good. Its jut something that I'm
noticing, and I'm honestly going to stop fucking with movies
until I see this done properly.

I don't even think it's a real cultural divide.

Sad black folks stare into the abyss and contemplate life like any motherfucker.

Yes! This is not a "black folks are more open-minded" argument
(though I might argue that, because society forces us to
understand and empathize with white people more than the
other way around...either way, that argument isn't necessary for
my general point to come across)

Here's what I'm saying-

Boyz N The Hood HAD TO HAVE the drawn out melodrama, the
tragedy in the inner-city, etc. It had to have those gimmicks
for anyone other than black people (and even a lot of black
people) to show up. The fact that it had one of the BEST FATHER
SON RELATIONSHIPS IN THE HISTORY OF FILM depicted beautifully
would have been lost if there wasn't gang violence and baby
crying with his dead dad soaked in blood on the couch.

Not the case with white people.

White people can make a critically acclaimed film with an odd
looking guy walking around making grumpy faces and fucking
an operating system.

Not only do you get this shit funded, white people are
EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED to this shit. They find it PROFOUND.

That is weird.

>I think it's just a culture divide. One that I luckily avoid

"We just need more black directors and writers" but this would apply to American film makers, because Spike Lee just did a remake of an Asian film with a White male in the lead. But Steve McQueen does 12 Years and repeatedly says he couldn't have made it without help from a White dude with a bunch of adopted kids lol

I think we should just let White people be White, we'll be sitting here forever waiting on one of them to write a great Black character, and I know that's not what you're saying but I just take these movies for what they are because you really can't expect some people to relate.

It was almost the end of Inside Llewyn Davis and it occurred to me I hadn't seen one Black character ( I think the second couple at the gorfreids was interracial ) but when a Black man finally showed up there he was, dressed in all white being asked to clean up a White man's shit.
