EXCLUSIVE: Donald Glover has lined up his followup series to Community. The actor-comedian is set to write, executive produce and play the lead in a half-hour comedy, which has landed at FX for development. Tentatively entitled Atlanta, the comedy is set against the backdrop of the Atlanta music scene. Glover grew up in Atlanta and has an active music career as a hip-hop artist, stage name Childish Gambino. I hear several networks were interested in Atlanta but, in addition to the FX comedy brand, Glover also was attracted by the network’s willingness to accommodate his music touring schedule. Glover is free and clear to topline Atlanta as he is no longer a regular on Community and is set to appear in five of the 13 episodes of the cult NBC comedy’s upcoming fifth season. Last season, Glover was attached in second position to an NBC comedy project penned by Matt Hubbard. Glover, repped by CAA, The Schiff Co. and attorney Lev Ginsburg, stated off as a writer on 30 Rock before landing the breakout role on Community as former high school quarterback-turned-air conditioning repair annex recruit Troy Barnes. He also has headlined two standup comedy specials.

I'm happy because I love the dude, and all that he does. but I mean, this is sad as fuck as a COMMUNITY fan. All of a sudden the decreased role this season seems less like a "I want to focus on music" and more like a "Yeah, I'm done with that...."

Or is that considered hokey now?

My series' story isn't really location-specific, but it has to be set somewhere in the south that is duplicatable with Atlanta locations.

Short answer: I have no clue!

Longer answer: Really, all stories are set in fictionalized locations, even when they aren't, so it kinda works.

And there's city's like New York, which have become so iconic and so mythologized, that in a way that makes them easier to create fictional analogues for.

But Atlanta? It's a major city and a musical mecca but it's got such a unique flavor to it that I'm not sure you could fake that in a way that would feel accessible to outsiders and authentic to those who know.

I'm probably just be speaking for myself based on my own travel and experiences, but some cities work as abstract ideas, whereas some you kinda have to be there. The thing I've been working on couldn't really exist anywhere else, but your mileage may vary.

making leeway with writing progress.

I don't want it to look like I copied this show, even though I've been actively working on it for quite some time.

My plot can happen elsewhere, but Atlanta was an ideal location. And, until now, severely under/misused.

Most people don't have a set-in-stone expectation because the concept of "Atlanta" stretches from ATL to The Walking Dead.

There's room for your vision. Write the characters honestly and don't let DGlover's thing dissuade you. If anything, this should tell you your ideas are marketable and you're on to something.

BTW, are you an ATL resident? Life-long?

Executives are lazy and chase what is already hot. And your project can draw a contrast which is worth something in itself. You can often get spoken in the same breath as the other show.

Headlines would be "The other ATL Music theme show you should be watching."

Don't believe me look at how Two Broke Girls, Broad City and Girls work together in the Broke White Girls in Brooklyn Sub Genre.

be cool if the trailers were clips from an episode but it looks pretty good, http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/atlanta/episodes

I think it's rare to get any film/tv focused on hip hop that isn't corny, and I don't think there's ever been a show where a rapper was the main character. They can probably get a few seasons out of this and they could stretch stories like characters getting signed, beefing, or working on projects over a few episodes.

Plus all the guest stars Glover can get from making friends in the music world, should be cool.

PEACE LOVE and MONEY

I laughed hard, plus those jail scenes, MAN.

There was some real good stuff in there. I really like who they cast as his cousin, and Darius kills me everytime.

I love this show.

I remember how much Seinfeld got of Jerry & George trying to sell the pilot, Paper Boi's single/career is like their pilot and Darius is the comic relief like Kramer. If Atlanta ever wanted to move away from the story line centering on Paper Boi & Earn trying to get into the business there are plenty of places they can go.

As people are already starting to do, the only thing I see taking away from this show are folks bringing up people's past comments/actions, or certain groups claiming they aren't being represented in a way they prefer.

I just wonder if the surreal parts are ever going to tie together in any way or if they'll just continue to be those head scratching moments for the characters?

The glowing hotwings was something else.

Zan was fucking hilarious every time he was on, and hopefully we see more of him in future episodes.

It gave perspective to both guys that we haven't seen yet, especially Darius.

Zan was annoying at first, but it was obvious he was supposed to be (I don't know if I've laughed harder than when he hoverboarded away with a big kool aid smile on his face). But it's obvious that Alfred eventually understood him, outside of all the contrived showmanship.

And Darius is a sharp, sharp dude. He's like Atlanta's version of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter: spacey and eccentric, but insightful and loyal as hell.

I wouldn't consider this episode filler at all.

But yeah. the storytelling was on point. Thought they were being cute with the title, but it made sense at the end.

Paperboi got Zan's point. Everybody's hustling. Probably an ATL thing, but the little kid in the backseat was disturbing the first time. LOL

All the stuff with Earn and Darius was great too.

Episodes 3,4, and 5 have basically been what I was looking for. This is getting really really good.

Maybe it's the Donald Glover connection, but Alfred's perpetual exasperation reminds me of Liz Lemon.

Okay...so I can see them setting it up for the run. Reporter won't give Alfred the time of day, trying to get him to play a role he's not necessarily suited for....Earn gets an antagonist he doesn't even really deserve by just doing his job of playing the angles....

But DARIUS IN THAT GUN SHOP, THO!!!

This is the type of shit I'm talking about, yo. The way that whole gun shop flipped out when he put that poster up in the range. That shit said SO much without touching on the details. Brilliant. The foreigners joining in was a bit extra...but nobody's perfect.

all in all....just a solid ass run of episodes so far. I hope they can keep it up.

That opening scene was magical. Every part of it. I hated that they cut to commercial.

But that won't be the scene everybody is talking about. LOL

The opening sequence at the restaurant gave me deja vu. My wife's got a longtime friend who does a lot of the same shit as Van's friend (dominating anytime they get together, trying to order for everyone, making sure everyone knows how well-traveled she is.) This dynamic was frighteningly accurate.

And I was rooting SO HARD for her to pass. To think pair of sewing scissors in her purse or even just peeing herself would've worked.

That whiteface kid reminded me of Macauly Culkin in The Good Son, but still less creepy.

It wasn't like it was that serious.

My wife is a schoolteacher and she talks all the time about trading off problem students. But never kids coming to school in whiteface. LOL

The second ep has been my favorite, but after re-watching I think last night's tops it.

I loved the subtle dig at talk shows for dragging out rappers for those conversations.

I loved 4, thought 5 was cool, but 6 and especially 7 blew me away.

With episode 7, you could really feel Glover's Community chops. You'd get tinges of a surrealistic bent in the earlier episodes but here he went full bore. Like that first paintball episode in Community where you're like "wait, this is where they're going with this? holy shit this is working, and it's AWESOME."

This whole episode felt like, to me, a microcosm of all these years on Okayplayer. That portrayal of personas, humor and overlapping-yet-conflicting attitudes was so fresh yet so familiar.

I have no idea where this show is going but at this point I don't even care, I'm just happy to be along for the ride.

The bartender conversation was real.

The subtlety of the exchange between the promoter Chris and the young woman in his office- we know that he is trying to spit game/get with her, and she is leveraging her power to get put on, get connected to someone else, etc....but she wasn't portrayed as an over the top chickenhead. That whole dance of the dude presenting his game, showcasing his supposed power, and her sitting where she sat, her body language....spot on.

I'm on episode 7 now.

I *swear* there have been multiple occasions on this show where I've said my reaction out loud and then someone in the show says the exact words I said.

And the Arizona Ice Tea vide is brilliant because it's happened in real life more than once.

I'm really enjoying this.

http://deadline.com/2017/01/atlanta-season-2-delayed-2018-premiere-han-solo-star-wars-1201884007/

It will be a long wait for Atlanta fans to see Donald Glover’s followup to the breakout first season of his FX comedy series. The network announced at TCA this morning that the acclaimed comedy will not air in 2017, with Season 2 slated for 2018 due to Glover’s production schedule.

Glover, of course, has a big movie commitment, playing Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Star Wars movie, which will film this year for a 2018 release. For Glover, that has been a dream role. “Lando’s a big deal to me,” he said at the Golden Globes on Sunday. “It was literally the first toy I ever got.”

At the Globes, Glover landed two awards as Atlanta won best comedy series and he was named best actor in a comedy series.

During the TCA executive session, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said the network was “fully supportive” of Glover’s need to pull away from Atlanta to play Lando. “We are thrilled for him,” Landgraf said.

Hailed as one of the best new comedies of 2016, Atlanta also won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and Glover was recently nominated for a WGA Award and DGA Award. Atlanta also has been a ratings breakout, ranking as basic cable’s most-watched new comedy in three years in Adults 18-49 and the highest-rated comedy in FX Networks’ history, averaging 4.84 million total viewers across all linear and non-linear platforms.

While this is not a new paradigm for FX, which has another praised comedy series, Louis CK’s Louie, on an extended hiatus for the second time, it is rather unusual for such a break to come so early in the series’ run but the circumstances are rather unusual as Glover is the main creative force and main star of the show, so his big film commitment makes it very hard to produce a new season of Atlanta at the same time.

Another comedy whose creator and star is branching out into features in a major way, Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, also is on a long break after Season 4 to accommodate her schedule.

And while Glover won’t be able to deliver a second season of Atlanta until 2018, in the meanwhile he may develop new series for Atlanta studio FX Prods. under the new overall deal he just signed there.

I don't know how many times that I've watched the second ep, or the Migos ep, or the club ep. All still hilarious.

I can't keep track. It's just so good. I'll think of a joke or scene and end up watching the entire ep.
