Bale in hambone form, Adams continuing to stack the résumé as potentially the best actress of her generation, Ol' Picasso Face Coop having fun with that hair. Plus, I just fucking love most con movies.

I was glad to see Bale smiling and not playing so goddamn serious, but the movie on the whole feels both by-the-numbers and disjointed. It's like Bale's storyline both makes the film worth watching and is included at the detriment of the film on the whole. Which doesn't sound like it makes sense.

I passed, cuz I didn't wanna deal with the traffic, so I opted for that Gravity 3D instead.

Plus, last time I went out of my way for a David O. Russell sneak peek, I didn't like it. So maybe the waiting will pay off.

I know someone who I think went, so I'll report back if he tells me he got in.

It also has a lot of heart. The story itself is simple but the charcters are so rich in this piece that yeah even a brief cameo has more depth to it than most other movies combined this year.

And yo Christan Bale owns this movie hands down. Dude is really charming and you'll see why/how he can con niggas easily.

But yea, this is gonna be my top 10. Easily.

Oh and after watching it, I wish they'd stuck with the OG title.

It's more of that gently-abrasive quirk from David O. Russell, and that's either something you can clap to, or not

Seems I have to be in the proper frame of mind for his movies, which is just weird

Anyway, I agree with those saying that it's Scorsese lite, the camerawork and production design are outstanding

I had no problem with the story and ultimately what the movie is about, which is NOT what you might be led to believe it is about based on the trailers and commercials

This ultimately is a love story between two grifters, Amy Adams and Batman, and the large issue of trust that towers over everything that they do

Movie features a solid ensemble but I thought Amy's performance was the strongest of the piece, even stronger than that mighty FIIIINE white woman YESSUH Jennifer Lawrence. Sadly, I think Amy's gonna get overlooked, because I didn't think JL's performance was anything special; she's an immature young girl who's popping off at the mouth while doing immature young girl shit. Whoop-de-damn-do © Derrick Coleman. Not necessarily saying she's overrated, but Amy's character is clearly the soul of the movie and she deserves to get more shine for her performance, mainly because of the different layers she has to wear as a character.

As far as the dudes go, Bradley Cooper impressed yet again, we already know how good Batman is, and Jeremy Renner was solid as well.

The surprise cameos were also great and very funny.

The movie was cool, it felt like what we think would happen if Sony threw some money at David O. Russell, independent filmmaker, and told him to go shoot whatever he wanted. Not mad at it, just not sure it's worth all of the praise it's bound to get, here and elsewhere.

another ridiculous performance by christian bale in a role he's not even remotely suited for. he got an oscar for doing this last time, so i'm expecting a nobel peace prize or something here. i mean, it's a david o. russell movie, so you kind of know what you're getting. bad editing, poor pacing, lots of clever dialogue and sight gags that are barely chuckle worthy. just when you start to care about something in the movie, we cut away from it and never come back. amy adams is the star here. her and renner are the only things that feel even remotely real, but everyone's going nuts over j. law, so what do i know. she was fine, she's a star obviously, but i can't get behind these showy look-at-me roles that feel like characters and deliberate acting choices instead of real people (see: almost every performance in the fighter).

not even gonna bother getting worked up about david o. russell's latest sub-mediocre film that everyone in hollywood pretends is a masterpiece. just give him some oscars please, so we can wrap up this career comeback narrative and him and his terrible movies can go away.

But it's definitely David O Russell doing Scorsese. It's not as big of a rip off of Goodfellas as Blow is, but there's so many stolen things.

That said, it's fun, and the performances are top notch. Perhaps DOR's most fun film since Three Kings.

Haven't enjoyed a con movie this much since Heist

Pacing & tone problems aside, this might be my favorite screenplay so far this year

As far as the performances, Bale does a helluva Bobby D but put enough of his own spin on it compared to J-Law's Casino Ginger. Adams is much better, Coop wasn't consistent but his highs outweighed the lows. Renner seemed to be miscast but wasn't too bad. Pena was cool but needed more screentime...him, Taghmaoui & Whigham were all pretty much wasted. I'm also not buying Jack Huston as a bad ass w/o the mask, but that's a small gripe. Cameo is 3 for 3 in 2013...love his resurgence

Rip off or not, Russ might've beat Marty w/ the cuts in this one. That soundtrack was som'n else.

I actually thought he was really good. On the posters, I swore he was cast in Anchorman 2, but once you got to know his character, I thought he was a pretty good fit. That hair was something tho.

He could've played the dual role like Keaton in Jackie Brown & Out of Sight. Would've fit right in too.

once you got to know his

Once it got to the scene where Bale chases after him & they have that mutual connection I bought in.

That hair was

It really was. Bale & Coop's were even worse but somehow thairs didn't bother me as much.

and i can't thank him enough for it. the way he captures her gestures and frames her within scenes is so damn sultry and sexy. Besides the fact she is prob the best "young" actress working today, the way David directs Amy, she jumps off the screen. The disco/bathroom scene was magnetic.

J-Law is le truth as well. honestly, her and Adams were my favorite parts of the film. the scene when she's cleaning and signing, ohh man, i was dyin'. Also how she went from sex kitten/vixen to completely broken hearted in one of the major scenes was trophy-lite work.

Renner, Bale, and Cooper all held it down, though i felt the film could've been trimmed by about 15-20min and the narration was a bit much.

very good, not great. i still have Silver Linings and Fighter ahead of it in Russell's filmog, but yeah

but it took me a while to buy in. The opening scene of them walking down a hotel corridor in super slow-motion while Steely Dan's "Dirty Work" was blaring on the soundtrack sort of got things off on the wrong foot for me. (The song choices here, while mostly all good songs, are only a tad less on-the-nose than they were in FLIGHT, and people savaged Zemeckis for that shit.)

In all honestly, I was probably watching it with an overly critical eye in light of it winning Best Picture from NYFCC and scoring so highly on so many Top 10 lists. Anyhow, I guess it comes together well enough that it ends up being satisfying and fun and all of that, so ultimately I liked it more than I disliked it. I just wouldn't put it in my Top 10.

I thought Christian Bale was great. In an odd way he was kind of the conscience of the movie. I liked the weariness that he brought to the role. Cooper was very good too. (And he fucking nailed the Louis CK impression.) Amy Adams was exceptional as always.

Jennifer Lawrence was miscast IMO. I had a hard time buying her in the role for some reason. I'm usually a big fan of hers, but I didn't even think her performance was all that great here. I can't decide if the "Live and Let Die" scene was a giant embarrassment or just a tiny one.

I guess this was Scorsese-esque, but it doesn't even come close to having the panache of a prime-era Scorsese movie. Early Paul Thomas Anderson, especially Boogie Nights, was both a more blatant and much better rip-off of Marty stylistically.

This mostly just felt David O. Russell-esque to me. I didn't think it was all that much different from his last two aesthetically. The biggest way the Goodfellas homage comes through is probably in the dueling voice overs from multiple narrators. The classic rock soundtrack has become so cliche over the years that it doesn't really count as being a nod to Scorsese anymore. (Also, the music was mostly in the background in Scorsese movies and in a lot of cases it was source music playing out of jukeboxes or car radios or whatever, even if you didn't notice that that was the case. The way the music was used here was almost like you were watching a music video at times.)

The use of slow-motion and other stylistic flourishes were nods too, I guess, but Russell's use of them just mostly felt arbitrary to me. (As opposed to in, say, Raging Bull, where the slow-motion was used almost exclusively for De Niro's POV shots to emphasize what he was seeing and thinking. In other words, it was used to serve a purpose, not just because it looked cool.)

I actually had a much easier time buying into Silver Linings Playbook as a sort of modern-day throwback to screwball comedy than I did buying into this as a sort of a confused mixture of screwball comedy, dark comedy, period drama, meta commentary on film making, love triangle romance, political commentary, etc. It was definitely not terrible, just lightweight and under-cooked.

The movie could have been 1hr 35min and been much more effective. The storyline got way too convoluted with all the love triangles and everyone trying to con each other with some cons being better described than others. Like when Irving gets out of being killed by the mobster, the con was just unbelievable and the way it was resolved was not believable either. Jennifer Lawrence shouldn't have been in this movie btw, it was so obviously her hamming it up for the camera with her weak fake NY accent.

As someone else said it suffered from pacing problems, over how many months/years did this shit happen? that could have helped.

It wasn't confusing as much as it was confused, David O. Russell needs a better editor, there were similar storyline problems in Silver Linings Playbook (which I enjoyed) but they were much easier to look past in that movie because the multiple plots weren't so complicated.

the good:

-Christian Bale turned in a great performance as he always does. and DAMN he commits: that pot belly he had needs to be the FIFTH lead in the movie LOLOL

-Amy Adams: honestly she's the "heart" of the movie for me. She hasn't been this good in ages and I agree with a poster who said that David seems to LOVE her. But, i hope she continues working with him because she POPPED in her scenes as Sidney/Lady Edith.

-the soundtrack: FIYAH! I am *SO* getting it

--the cameos: Pena, Whigham, Louie C.K. (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), DeNiro, etc. just great to see them pop up, even if it's briefly.

the meh:

Jennifer Lawrence: i luh huh. Mama could read the phone book, dressed in a form fitting burlap sack and do the white girl beyonce shimmy shake as she reads it on film and the shit would be riveting because she's just that fantastic. She nailed the *young chick in love with an older man because she clearly has daddy issues/needs a "father" figure in her life. BUT...she wasn't great. She wasn't horrible either. Yea she's getting all this late Oscar buzz (and i bet she gets a best supporting actress nom and probably wins over Lupita Nyong'o's feat of BRILLIANCE as Patsey fuck Oprah's lush overacting and everyone else who'll end up being nominated just GIVE the shit to Lupita!) but i don't see it for this performance. She'll most DEFINITELY get a nod whenever SERENA (also with bradley cooper), the Jeanette Walls biopic, etc. come out. but this movie? not even.

the wtf?!

jeremy renner did seem miscast. he was distracting as hell with the hair. solid, but i don't know...i feel like with him, i like his performances but ultimately, he just never stands out in movies...even when he's the lead. it's weird.

the ridiculously bad

bradley cooper: yea, he's getting better but he was so inconsistent and though there's not a weak link per say in this movie, he just wasn't consistently bringing his A game like everyone else was. The meltdown in Sidney/Lady Edith's apartment was horrible overacting, etc. but David O. loves working with Bradley, so there you go.

movie length: they could have chopped a good 20 minutes off and this would have been fine.

overall, a solid movie. just not one that is worthy of all the praise it's getting imho

in the trailers they show her walk up to the mob guys with the camera infront of her and the way she says "who's buying me a drink?" is just awesome...she has a ton of swagger in that moment but the final cut leaves that scene out only showing her walk away from behind. that was odd.

con men movies only work when you have one person (the con artist) who's a bit smarter than every one else

the only one who sort of fit that bill was Amy Adams char.

the fake accents, the wigs, the overacting

not sure why this is getting so much love

and damn i wanted Jennifer Lawrence character to get shot

Great performances all around especially Adams and Bale. Adams has never been so sexy, I fell in love with her in the first 15 mins. The ending just seem really neat to me...it all worked out too nicely. After watching the vicious cycle of manipulation I expected a little more...I dunno, consequences? Not even sure that's the word I'm looking for but it was missing something. Good movie though.

Overall, it was a decent movie.
Not better than any of O Russell's older films (like Spanking The Monkey or Huckabees).
I would only watch it once.
Not good enough for repeat viewings.
J. Lawrence was okay. No big deal. She wasn't on screen long enough for me to get annoyed. I don't share yalls complaints there.
Amy Adams stole the whole movie, ofcourse.
Bale was good.
The narration felt very forced & contrived. I can see why people keep comparing it to a Martin Scorsese film.

Enjoyed it a lot, the first half hour was hard to get into. I started getting into it when The mayor character entered the picture and that we started to understand the conflict between the Amy Adams VS Christian Bale character. I agree with some people here. Amy Adams' performance is what moves the movie. She goes through different ranges of emotions that have to convey her pretend self and her real self and she sells it very well. J-Law was okay but did not give her character too much depth. She was a bitch designed to make us hate her for her manipulative ways.Christian Bale played a different character than what we're used to see and to me disappeared into the role. Every time Louis CK was on screen , he offered a chuckle. Can someone explain why they replaced the Saïd Taghmaoui's Sheik for the Michael Pena one, as i'm sure the first one could speak Arabic better? Bradley Cooper is okay in it. I just don't buy the character and how he is written. He's a grown man with a full time job, who lives with his mother and fiance. It was a little bit too caricatural for me.I loved Jeremy Renner in this. It was refreshing to see him as a normal, bubbly guy. Definitely adding this in my top 10 favorites on 2013.

Russell loves Announcing His Themes Aloud Over And Over, which is tiresome. Lawrence is way too young for her role, and the scene in which she kisses Adams is classic Russell women fetishization--- it's almost like he heard people's complaints about Silver Linings ogling Lawrence and pairing her with a guy super-undeserving of her affection and doubled down. Cooper definitely is the boldest here, but this time around it felt more hammy, particularly in his coked-out scenes (odd that we don't ever see him do coke, since that's obviously the implication). The constantly moving camera also is tiresome-- at times, it suits the energy of events, but other times when people are just standing around talking, Russell is Steadicamming around the room pointing this way and that for no particular reason other than because he wants to.

Finally, it sentimentalizes and glorifies these awful people in a big way, which is especially odd since Wolf of Wall Street, which doesn't, is being accused of glorification. Obviously these aren't real people, so it's different, I understand-- but tonally it's still really peculiar. This is a super-unearned happy ending.

It's still better than Russell's last two outings... but man, if in a terrific movie year this ends up winning the Oscar, what a fucking historic embarrassment that will be. You'll have 12 Years a Slave, Gravity, and Captain Phillips up for Best Pic, yet this is likely the front-runner at this point. Sheesh. Do the right thing, Academy.

Then again, I haven't seen The Fighter since it came out, so maybe that's worse than I remember.

Silver Linings was OK for me when I thought of it as a throwback to old-school screwball comedies.

American Hustle was mediocre to me in every way, save for Adams and Bale.

>Russell loves Announcing His Themes Aloud Over And Over

if you didn't, it's OK -- we'll rehash the scene 10 minutes later and explain it to you again.

... is the scene in which Lawrence explains that she is, in fact, like the nail polish.

i'm glad i chose to go see Wolf in theaters and bootleg this.

Bale was cool as always.
Amy Adams was cool.
coked out Cooper was doing too much. shit made a lot more sense after the one time they showed him doing coke.
Jennifer Lawrence was insufferable so I guess she did her job. I wasn't that impressed though.
Renner was probably the best thing about the movie.

idk how this is getting so much critical and award love.
