"47 Ronin (Rinsch, 2013)"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47_-pqoPDVQ

Wow yo. After production troubles, release date pushed back, went over budget, and supposedly director Carl Rinsch being taken off the film halfway through the editing process, this shit leaves more to be desired. I was rooting for this to work, but this shit looks stupid.

I hope I'm wrong.

The 47 Ronin is a dope story in of itself without the fantasy bullshit. This could've been a throwback to old-school samurai epics that Toho put out like crazy.

but for this classic story its not needed. More evidence of noncreatives aka suits getting involved in the creative process, but hey what else is new in hollywood....smdh..lol.

Takashi Miike should have directed this after what he did with 13 assassins and the harakiri remakes,he would have killed this!

That's about the only way, because I can't imagine any new remakes of the '41 or '62 Chushingura movies being any good.

That it will automatically be bad.

I have nothing to add about the trailer, I just wanted to mention one of the funniest/most insane Wells rants I've encountered this year (which is saying something).

Nothing from this trailer was bad. Samurais, sword fights, supernatural elements and white savior. It screams Hollywood epic.

I hope there's some good fisticuffs involved here. I don't see why action/kung fu movies can't do what horror movies do.

Get some cheap talent, and unknown director a DECENT plot and let these mfers cook! You can't tell me you can't make a good action flick on a similar budget scale as horror joints!

what?

um 47 Ronin and you hope it's not all swords? then you might as well not go see it cause MOST OF IT will be swords.

as for everything else you posted:

take away the fisticuffs and action set pieces and THE RAID wasn't even REMOTELY DECENT.

and cheap talent? who in hollywood is going to do an action movie for scale nowadays?

and what actors are considered "cheap talent" would even be GOOD ENOUGH to carry a movie period?

you know damn well you can't do DECENT action on what horror movies get for budgets.

shit, you can't even get decent HORROR on what most horror movies get for budgets.

For every Blumhouse flick, you get a SHIT LOAD of crap. and YOU of all people should know this...smh

and horror budgets for the most part aren't THAT big. on the average barely 250K-maybe 5 mil tops.

for the most part, you aren't getting action film quality on a horror film budget.

you can cite the raid but they did all of it in basically ONE location (a tenement slum apartment building) and that's it.

a film like 47 Ronin, i don't even see how you could logistically film it in it's grand scale and entirety for even 10 million...

you expect a Keanu Reeves movie (and he's *STILL* getting a grip of money to show up in films still...) to be made on THE RAID scale?

And it's kind of expected to tank.

It kind of looks like to me that they added in a lot of the CGI after the fact to sell it on a fantasy element (that of course has jack squat to do with the original story).

The second trailer looked ok, but I think this is definitely one to stay away from...

dumbass budget

21. "Universal takes writedown on new Keanu Reeves film *swipe*"
In response to Reply # 0

Oh shit!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

http://tv.yahoo.com/news/exclusive-universal-takes-writedown-keanu-reeves-film-170213567--finance.html

Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures movie studio has taken unspecified write-downs for its $175 million, Keanu Reeves film "47 Ronin" that opens on Christmas Day, the studio has acknowledged, as Hollywood neared the end of a year of big budget bombs.

The film, a fantasy action film about a group of samurai in 18th century Japan, cost $175 million to make, according to people with knowledge of its budget.

It is expected to gross between $17 million and $20 million for the five-day Christmas Day holiday period through Sunday December 29, Hollywood experts have forecast, a particularly weak showing for a big budget film.

"Universal Pictures regularly evaluates its film slate for potential adjustment," said a Universal official. "In the case of '47 Ronin,' we adjusted film costs in previous quarters and as a result, our financial performance will not be negatively impacted this quarter by its theatrical performance."

Universal did not disclose the size of the earlier write-downs.

Although Hollywood executives cautiously predict a record year at the box office, many had their own big budget misfires. Walt Disney wrote down the costs of the $215 million Johnny Depp western "The Lone Ranger," which it had said lost more than $160 million.

Earlier in the year, Dreamworks Animation took an $87 million write down for its 2012 holiday film "Rise of the Guardians," while Warner Brothers' "Jack the Giant Slayer" generated $197.7 million in worldwide ticket sales and cost $195 million to make. (Studios generally get half the ticket sales.)

Sony cited the "theatrical underperformance" of the $150 million thriller "White House Down" as one reason its studio recorded a $181 million loss in its second quarter.

Universal's "47 Ronin" tells the story of a half-Japanese former slave, played by Keanu Reeves, who joins a band of outcast samurai intent on avenging the death of their master and who battle mythic beasts and shape-shifting witches.

It was initially scheduled for release in November 2012, but was moved to February 2013 for more work on the 3D visual efforts, before it was postponed to Christmas Day.

The film has grossed an estimated $6.2 million in three foreign markets, including Japan and Singapore, Universal said.

Powered by hits "Despicable Me 2" and "Fast & Furious 6," the studio had a record year at the box office in 2013, it said earlier in the year, crossing $2 billion mark in international ticket sales for the first time in its 101-year history.

It also had its best year in the domestic market, with $1.4 billion in North American film sales, third behind Warner Brothers and Walt Disney, according to Box Office Mojo.

On December 23, Universal said it had pushed back its car chase movie "Fast & Furious 7" by nine months to April 2015 after co-star Paul Walker died in a car crash.

Nah, you're the white (she)male, remember. Your
asian fetish outruns mine in the 55m, 100m, 200m,
400m, 1500m, 3200m, marathon, and Mario Kart.

Had everything, action, a lil' humor, misty moments. If they had marketed it as one of those sweeping chinese epics it would have done better.

But if you went in expecting spiderman w/swords & demons and shit, this shit was NOT for you.

I did enjoy it and was surprised by it but it still lacked something. The CGI didn't kill this classic tale like I thought it would. I commend them for taking this famous samurai tale and making it their own.Only gripe I felt the film lacked that hunger for revenge - wish this was shot with a hard R rating in mind..lol,it seemed a tad watered down at times.Didn't see the point of keanu's character ,other than Hollywood being Hollywood(gives them the side eye)
The Japanese actor (Hiroyuki Sanada)who played alongside keanu should have been the sole lead - he was awesome in last samurai and everything I've seen him in.(reminds me of Toshiro Mifune at times) nix keanu and his pointless ass character..lol

Chris Morgan and Hussein amini did a decent job on the script - was easy enough to follow.

3 and a half out of 5 from me

This dude must have an obsession with kung-fu flicks or he really believes he's Chinese/Japanese or whatever. The Man of Tai Chi film went right to DVD after being postponed for a year for theatrical release and now this film has bombed hard domestically. Give this shit a rest already man...

I'm not surprised by the niggas who liked this shit.

This was hot basura. The mystical creatures went unexplained and added nothing to story. That was so much money burned that could've been saved yo.

Keanu had a story and background I could give a fuck less about.

Why couldn't they just do the 47 Ronin story with out all the added bullshit?

Thanks HBO for saving me dough. Even though I was in and out of sleep watching this/working from home.
